Anita Carter is the singer with the incredible voice. June's younger sister was gifted with one of the most beautiful, pure soprano voices in country & folk music.
You know, when I see Johnny here, I don't see a man in his thirties high on amphetamines, destructive and angry. I see a little boy scared and completely broken seeing his big brother cut almost in half, in blood, and then dying. I see a troubled boy, being struck by guilt all his life. A boy who saw his mother's worst day. A boy who was not supported so much by his father. A boy who needed to fight these demons in some ways. A boy finding amphetamines and then getting drained by them, sleepless, weary and so so lonely. I can really understand what June saw in him and why she had this strong urge to fight for him. And thank God she did.
@@hildahaselnuss620 thank you! Having gone through some tough times myself, I can relate. I actually find a lot of similarities between me and Johnny Cash, that's why I grew to like him so much. Anyway, have a great day!

Heaven. Pure Heaven. The Carter Family were from Maces Spring Virginia, The heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains...........My heritage, they make me proud!! God bless them and Johnny Cash!! Pure legends!!
Wow! Anita had the most beautiful voice. Johnny was clearly living the hard life at this point....makes the song even more powerful. So thankful for live performances from that time.
The "Carter's" are the closest to hearing angels singing here on earth; that you will hear ! They were blessed with so many talents as clearly magnified in this old powerful spiritual song!
I know what drugs can do..this only confirms that Johnny WAS one of us.And from my drug abuse it leaves me trembling all the time,to me its just the Lord's breath comforting me.
Regardless of one's religious views this is great, the harmony of the Carters and the background music, perfection, Johnny does look a little stoned and this was done much later than 1960 due to the quality of the color picture, probably about 1966 like one other posted. I grew up with the music of Johnny Cash and never tire of listening to him, whether he was stoned or sober.
Anita is the perfect person to sing that high part of this song. Her voice is literally like an angel's. Johnny looks like he has been doing some hard living and does not feel at all well. He looks like he's at least 20 or 30 pounds underweight. I'm so glad he got through this terrible place alive! He was truly dancing with the devil but fortunately he won!
May I say that every one's sins are there, also when JESUS WAS ON THE CROSS I BELIEVE THAT IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT JESUS CRIED OUT FATHER FORGIVENESS FOR US THAT I BELIEVE HAD TO BE PART OF OUR FORGIVENESS
Wow this was right in the middle of Johnny's drug addiction. Those ladies were dealing with alot around this time. They're actually my cousins- poor Anita passed away way too early.
This was at the end of his drug addiction, he had been addicted to or taking amphetamines and Barbiturates(?) since 1958 on top of heavy drinking. By 1967 he kicked his habit. This is in 1966
...and also reminds us to remember the ones who were there..how profound to have actually been there, watching and praying and begging and being able to do nothing but watch him suffer for us.
Legendary performances are timeless, powerful, soul changin', spiritual in nature, and will leave all others in the dust...this is one of those performances!
WOW!.. let's see anyone now a days come close to that sound. Not even close even with all the digital enhancement. Not even close. You get a taste of the sounds of heaven when she belts it. Just another way of God saying hello.....
Close your eyes and imagine listening to the glorified angels singing in perfect harmony while sitting along the crystal sea in the shadow of the Holy Throne of God...the Carter ladies are as close as you get here on Earth!
This beautiful song gave me chills when I first heard it and still gives me chills every time I play it. One of the most beautiful gospel songs ever! Johnny got off the stool and out of the picture so the Carters could have the stage to themselves. A very sensitive move and anyone who finds trouble with it needs to reevaluate their sensitivity to others.
I don't care what the people look like or act like while they sing this song, They are professionals, bringing these strong words to us. Whatever! They may be going through their own tribulation, It's what WE hear, in the words of the song. What we are going through to find the strength in the words of this song....not the people!
Johnny Cash , must of been a drug addict , alcoholic, you name but one thing he never forgot where he came from and most of all he never forgot about God and Jesus Christ our Lord savior. RIP JOHNNY CASH
The Carter family's vocal harmonies on this song are so powerful. Personally, I see gospel music as just music and do not seek any guidance nor truth from it. However, I greatly admire the performance here by Johnny and The Carter Family.
This is perfect. Johnny was nothing without a family behind him. He made us all proud. However, the best thing he ever did in his life was to honor the women who stood behind him.
Johnny Cash's rendition of this old gospel song is so so sad yet provides us with hope. My heart always cries out each and every time I hear this old gospel song, since it did the very first time I heard it. The Carter Family's background vocals adds intensity to the lyrics. Jesus of Nazareth let his blood run down from his cross on Calvary at Golgatha just for our sins. RIP Johnny Cash. God bless all this Holy Friday and Easter Sunday!
What a profoundly powerful song sang from the 'Carter Family'. I feel as though I've walked through the grand pearly gates; strolling down the sparkling streets of Gold; hearing the Angels sweetly singing in perfect harmony in the Shadow of the Lord's throne!
John looked bad in this.. The pills had him down but that woman singing in the back and the man he is singing about made him whole again. sure made me tremble.
Johnny looks like he's just started to work his way back from rock bottom, and he owes so much to the help and support of the entire Carter family. Great, great song!!!
I got to see Johnny Cash, his wife, and the Carter Family at a small theater before he got sick. He wasn't at the high point of his career, but I don't think I've ever seen a better performance. I was sitting at a table about 20 feet away from them. There were times when you could hear a pin drop, like when he was singing the Highway Patrolman by Bruce Springsteen. It set the standard for what I think of as a performance that is worth seeing. Unfortunately, they don't come around very often.
This is great!!! Anita's voice is that of an angel...
