Too fair a character.... We need more transitions into shadow step imo. I would say the b2 string and the f3 strings being cancellable into SS after the 2nd hit would be neat, and keep the flavor of the character
This, Shadow Step is already a limited option, then if the opponent is familiar with the AK moveset it becomes almost usleess. Transition into Shadow Step by cancelling the heatbut ? Off you go to hop kick city. Transition to ShadowStep after ff3 is also average at best, a mucher better option is to side-step after and use DU if the oponnet whiffs or go for a throw mix-up.
@Sarincrow I think he need's the good ol' mid dark upper from TTT because as it stands you can duck most of the important parts of his moveset. I also think his clothesline needs clean hit properties just so its more obvious when you are or are not able to get a full combo off of it. Otherwise I don't think he's bad. He obviously has pretty good jab pressure, and a full throw game, though I think he should have more things to do after a tackle.
7:20 im pretty sure the d24 2nd hit always induced pancake flip. the season 3 change made it so that d243 last hit vs grounded opponents makes them unable to tech roll, just like the how noctis' emo man last hit vs grounded opponents make them unable to tech roll. or any other move that has a ground stun property vs grounded opponents.

Bleach music 👀 I really wanted more changes for Armor King, but being the designated Jack of All Trades restricts what he's allowed to gain, unfortunately. Give him too much and he'd be the next Devil Jin. One thing he does really stand out that I think was glossed over was his excellent pushback punish game. He's basically the only character that can punish Bryan's 3+4 at all (aside from Anna with rage), and he gets high damage with b+3 into microdash f+1+4, which works on a lot of other moves as well now, especially with the pushback nerfs to some of them. Also, the Lariat change also makes the Dark Upper combo possible after hopkick, CH d/f+3, and delayed hopkick as well. That's 73 damage on his i15 launch from crouching, same 80 damage on a safe CH mid, and 85 damage on a staggered low.
A few details: 1. Don't agree about the oki. f4 is great but vs siderolls you suggest ground throws. The problem is that AK's ground throws are very bad - all his gt2 literally don't do damage in the open and the frames don't matter because opponent is too far away. 2. AK is weak vs SSR (and crouching!), true. His homing moves are slow, true as well. But he has certain moves vs SSR, for example df2 (df21 makes it safe on block) and f34 (especially with the CH changes) which you didn't mention. f34 is a mm safe string that on CH guarantees the 3 extension which wallsplats, knocks down, and tracks SSR. Otherwise great video!
Cheers for the feedback! Armor King's okizeme would be even better if his GT2 gave more than just advantage in the open, but in the grand scheme of things it's still pretty damn good. Df+2 and f+3,4 are also good options for catching SSR as you mentioned, but for the purpose of an overview we can't exhaustively cover every option.

I think Armor King isa great choice for beginers since he is a character that is versatile and literary have anything in his arsenal to punish his opponents! The only skill Barrier that AK have for new players is that they need to get good at the game in general because AK requires great understanding of the game such as movement,spacing and punishing! The thing is you need to learn those things if you wanna get good and climb up and AK is a decent character for that as he will force/teach you to learn the game! So far there are 3 things that made AK a semi difficult character 1. Requires a decent understanding of the game(such as wavedash,backdash,punish) to be played effectively 2. Is that he can’t pressure and dictate the fight 3. Is that he bad at building up frames But other that this 3, he is a pretty easy character to pick up though there more characters who is easier to play than him like Lars,Claudio or Bob, yet you wouldn’t need to character grind with him like the Mishimas, Jin, Yoshi or Bryan!

Going from a character with UNUSUALLY long sidestep compared to his relatively big frame to weaker than average is massive, particularity when it comes to SS into Dark Uppercut launch. I really feel His power, core design and tier listing have took the one of biggest nosedives in T7(nothing beats Lars tough) But I am happy that he has managed to not only keep his audience but also expand it. the ammount of players that are playing him is STAGGERING, especially considering that he is a bloody DLC character.
T7's collab with NJPW was a huge success and brought many professional pro wrestling fans to the Tekken franchise, from what I can gather. In that regard, AK makes sense as a character who would be very popular among puroresu nerds. His Poison Mist being inspired by The Great Kabuki and The Great Muta while many of his moves are mo-capped by a current NJPW wrestler. Lil Majin has also championed for AK a lot on recent livestreams and in ranked play. It's also not like AK was unpopular in TT2, he was one of the best tag characters. I think all of this contributed to his evergrowing popularity.

I disagree with the damage off of none-DU launchers being average or mediocre. With strong execution the guy breaks 80 or very close to that with most launchers, normal and counter-hit. He can shit out damage, just got to work for it. How many lariats can this combo fit? A ton. I felt that this was excluded from the video or maybe you just weren't familiar with his damage potential.
Just picked up Tekken a few months ago and I was instantly hooked. Don't have a good pc so can't play 7 yet. I have been sticking to 6 for quite some time and it's my dream to have a new laptop to play 7 on, and I have been watching your videos for a while now. Although your guides for me maybe a bit weird due to differences between the games, it has helped me understand a lot about Tekken's system and characters, especially AK who's my go-to. All I want to say is even though I'm basically a man out of time, thank you for making these guides and keeping my interest and investment in Tekken. Coming from Mishimas (Heihachi and Kazuya) Armor King is definitely way harder to play. With Mishimas, I can make us of their very good frame data and just throw out electrics when I'm pressured. I really like whiff-punishing and with AK you can't really throw out dark uppers like you do electrics. You have to play Armor King way more 'honest' because he lacks really good frames. You really have to condition your opponent a lot more than with other characters when playing Armor King, grab set-ups are important. I often times use his f4 as if it were a Mishima axe kick but you can definitively tell he lacks in that department. If you watch JDCR play AK in tournament, you'll basically only see df1 and d4, coupled with movement and that's why I think Armor King might make you a better player fundamentally because he doesn't have that one single move that'll bail you out. Like JDCR said, there's basically no reason to pick AK over Heihachi or Kazuya if you can play those characters. Some sensible buffs I'd give him: - Rage drive leaves opponent closer and always guarantees tombstone, right now his RD just feels half-assed/bugged - Give some more tracking to his core moves, right now he feels really linear, I feel like I get my df1 stepped a lot more than with other characters - Make his power crush not garbage, you'd think a character called armor king would have a good armor move, I have a feeling they might actually buff this. Make it force crouch or something. - Give him his old death sandwich back, he really needs it - Do something about db3, I don't know why but that move really irritates me. I always resort to that move when I'm panicked and I hate myself for using it. I always feel like I got away with murder when it connects. Speed it up and remove the ch launch properties, just do something about it It's really hard buffing a character like AK because his fundamental tools are good and his throw game is excellent. I'm pretty sure he'll be in the main roster in the next game because of how popular he is as DLC right now so I'm confident he'll be more fleshed out then.

Armor King definitely needs some more buffs. If anything, at least make his poking tools a bit faster. It’s frustrating that nearly character can sidestep AK’s df1 and launch him at the start of a match. I feel like he needs more safe mids
Always loved AK more than king I love the guide but I do agree with his flaws. If they improve the speed of his sidestep or his lows he’d be much more efficient results wise
In your round-up you mention the main reason I don't really follow the highest levels of play. I entirely understand why, but it still annoys me that characters are usually chosen at that level purely based on which is "strongest" as opposed to what characters those players actually like the most. The side-effect of that being that it's always the same handful of characters fighting each other over and over again. You have to go watch tournaments on another damn continent to see something new...
I have seen a lot of Armor King's in yellow, orange ranks and my Kazumi looses the most against. His okizeme is too strong and i dont find a good tactic against him. Versus other characters i can play half asleep but AK needs full attention just to get a chance. In red and purple ranks i see AK very seldom.
AK's strength was combo dmg in season 2. In season 3, nearly every character has a 65-70 dmg generic combo. It's no longer unique, which makes AK garbage tier. He simply has no strength anymore. He has the best DF1 in the game next to Lee, and a sparking WS4, but that's it. When you watch JDCR play AK you only really see those 2 moves with some lows and whiff punishes, it's funny how bad the rest of his kit is.
I don't think you're being entirely fair. Aside from the second best grappling game in Tekken, Armour King also has pretty strong punishment (e.g. Dark Upper, a launch punisher from sidestep in SS2, 1, and very good block punishment), as well as decent poking, a very potent approaching weapon in CD1 and strong okizeme. Sure, his lack of dangerous and safe mids is a problem, as is his dearth of decent lows, but I don't think it's accurate to describe him as garbage tier.
Another thing, I think that people grossly exaggerate the extent to which combo damage and wall carry were buffed for season 3. It isn't true that nearly every character can get 65-70 damage from a staple combo off of a generic standing i15 launcher. They can get that kind of damage from an *optimal* combo from such a launcher, sure, but not a *staple* combo. Getting 80 damage from a staple combo off of a launching whiff punisher remains exceptional in season 3. Armour King's combo damage might not distinguish him as much it did in season 2, but it does still set him apart.
I want to main Armor king but I don't have the game. Although I must say Feng Wei seems to come more natural to me but since I play don't get to play the game often I am assuming that was beginners luck
3:41 tbh cd throws are only slightly worse than hellsweep. Both launch punishable but throws can be broken. 4:11 His float dmg seems pretty standard to me

What do you guys think of his DDT throw? Since its a 1+2 grab its animation allows for a 50/50 throw break mixup with Giant Swing just like Shining Wizard, it does more damage than Shining Wizard (45 damage + 10 damage from guaranteed getup 3, the 1 situation where T7 system changes benefitted AK), and its input (d/b, d/b+1+2) allows it to be buffered from other moves (and backdash!) much more easily than Shining Wizard ever could

The one change I appreciate from this video as opposed to the season 2 one's is the exclusion of the letter grade. That doesn't really matter when the pilot is the architect of play. It's just a silly quantifier for a talking point that people use to follow the game.

Hey, I've been trying my best to make Armor King work to no avail... although I usually end up around top 8s during school tournaments. I'm fairly new to Tekken cuz I've been playing mostly Anime Fighters so I had no problem with difficult inputs, I only picked up Armor King cuz he looks cool and he is a grappler but people kept telling me to just switch to Kazuya cuz he is better... should I change my mains?

From T6 AK has always seen high usage tho. In Tag2 usage stats showed he was top5

Although your guides for me maybe a bit weird due to differences between the games, it has helped me understand a lot about Tekken's system and characters, especially AK who's my go-to. All I want to say is even though I'm basically a man out of time, thank you for making these guides and keeping my interest and investment in Tekken. I sure hope it will be worth it in the future for me.

@Sarincrow Paul isn't really a rushdown character. Also, you can't really punish with throws in Tekken.
Grabs may be easier to break but I barely see the grab animation most of the time, much less break it.

Coming from Mishimas (Heihachi and Kazuya) Armor King is definitely way harder to play. With Mishimas, I can make us of their very good frame data and just throw out electrics when I'm pressured. I really like whiff-punishing and with AK you can't really throw out dark uppers like you do electrics. You have to play Armor King way more 'honest' because he lacks really good frames. You really have to condition your opponent a lot more than with other characters when playing Armor King, grab set-ups are important. I often times use his f4 as if it were a Mishima axe kick but you can definitively tell he lacks in that department. If you watch JDCR play AK in tournament, you'll basically only see df1 and d4, coupled with movement and that's why I think Armor King might make you a better player fundamentally because he doesn't have that one single move that'll bail you out. Like JDCR said, there's basically no reason to pick AK over Heihachi or Kazuya if you can play those characters.
Some sensible buffs I'd give him:
- Rage drive leaves opponent closer and always guarantees tombstone, right now his RD just feels half-assed/bugged
- Give some more tracking to his core moves, right now he feels really linear, I feel like I get my df1 stepped a lot more than with other characters
- Make his power crush not garbage, you'd think a character called armor king would have a good armor move, I have a feeling they might actually buff this. Make it force crouch or something.
- Give him his old death sandwich back, he really needs it
- Do something about db3, I don't know why but that move really irritates me. I always resort to that move when I'm panicked and I hate myself for using it. I always feel like I got away with murder when it connects. Speed it up and remove the ch launch properties, just do something about it
It's really hard buffing a character like AK because his fundamental tools are good and his throw game is excellent. I'm pretty sure he'll be in the main roster in the next game because of how popular he is as DLC right now so I'm confident he'll be more fleshed out then.

Armor King definitely needs some more buffs. If anything, at least make his poking tools a bit faster. It’s frustrating that nearly character can sidestep AK’s df1 and launch him at the start of a match. I feel like he needs more safe mids

Always loved AK more than king I love the guide but I do agree with his flaws. If they improve the speed of his sidestep or his lows he’d be much more efficient results wise

In your round-up you mention the main reason I don't really follow the highest levels of play. I entirely understand why, but it still annoys me that characters are usually chosen at that level purely based on which is "strongest" as opposed to what characters those players actually like the most. The side-effect of that being that it's always the same handful of characters fighting each other over and over again. You have to go watch tournaments on another damn continent to see something new...

I have seen a lot of Armor King's in yellow, orange ranks and my Kazumi looses the most against. His okizeme is too strong and i dont find a good tactic against him. Versus other characters i can play half asleep but AK needs full attention just to get a chance. In red and purple ranks i see AK very seldom.
AK's strength was combo dmg in season 2. In season 3, nearly every character has a 65-70 dmg generic combo. It's no longer unique, which makes AK garbage tier. He simply has no strength anymore.
He has the best DF1 in the game next to Lee, and a sparking WS4, but that's it. When you watch JDCR play AK you only really see those 2 moves with some lows and whiff punishes, it's funny how bad the rest of his kit is.
Kazumi also has a better DF1
I don't think you're being entirely fair. Aside from the second best grappling game in Tekken, Armour King also has pretty strong punishment (e.g. Dark Upper, a launch punisher from sidestep in SS2, 1, and very good block punishment), as well as decent poking, a very potent approaching weapon in CD1 and strong okizeme. Sure, his lack of dangerous and safe mids is a problem, as is his dearth of decent lows, but I don't think it's accurate to describe him as garbage tier.
His df1 is not that great since the opponent stays far after being hit by it. They should make the opponent closer on hit.
Another thing, I think that people grossly exaggerate the extent to which combo damage and wall carry were buffed for season 3. It isn't true that nearly every character can get 65-70 damage from a staple combo off of a generic standing i15 launcher. They can get that kind of damage from an *optimal* combo from such a launcher, sure, but not a *staple* combo.
Getting 80 damage from a staple combo off of a launching whiff punisher remains exceptional in season 3. Armour King's combo damage might not distinguish him as much it did in season 2, but it does still set him apart.

What do you guys think of his DDT throw? Since its a 1+2 grab its animation allows for a 50/50 throw break mixup with Giant Swing just like Shining Wizard, it does more damage than Shining Wizard (45 damage + 10 damage from guaranteed getup 3, the 1 situation where T7 system changes benefitted AK), and its input (d/b, d/b+1+2) allows it to be buffered from other moves (and backdash!) much more easily than Shining Wizard ever could

The one change I appreciate from this video as opposed to the season 2 one's is the exclusion of the letter grade. That doesn't really matter when the pilot is the architect of play. It's just a silly quantifier for a talking point that people use to follow the game.
I really like that you've made these PDFs available, but when I try to print them (Armor King's) it shows up as 8 pages, but it looks like it should be 14 pages. Am I doing something wrong?
Hey, I've been trying my best to make Armor King work to no avail... although I usually end up around top 8s during school tournaments.
I'm fairly new to Tekken cuz I've been playing mostly Anime Fighters so I had no problem with difficult inputs, I only picked up Armor King cuz he looks cool and he is a grappler but people kept telling me to just switch to Kazuya cuz he is better... should I change my mains?
Another great video. AK though, along with "standard" King, are two characters I've never never felt comfortable using, since their debut 🤷🏻♂️
