      +Chris L Optimism is the variable of success more often than not...however one should never enter into things naively, if you are scared about your future you should listen to that instinct and find a way to address what that fear is trying to tell you...

      +Roberto Blake well right now I'm having self doubt because everytime I try to be creative, I am told to go back to minimalist designs. I'm sick of using Helvetica, I understand it's a really good type face. But I'm sick of it, I really just want to break the rules of typography like David Carson does. Yet the drive I had to be creative is over run with "doing what works and not being original". I just feel that I'm trapped with minimalist designs that I hate, when all I want to do is try to make something I'm proud of instead of making sure my alignment is always exact or I'm only using geometric form.

    • @RobertoBlake

      +Chris L Then do that, but balance it by doing whatever you know has to be practical if a "job is the goal" or position yourself to sell what it is you want to do. But do not, and I repeat do not complain about the marketplace or that people aren't buying what you are selling. Either find the right market or sell something else and do what you love on your free time... don't stop being creative but don't expect everyone to applaud it if it doesn't get them what they want or need...

      @NewLifeChurchJapan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris L Who is telling you to use Helvetica? Hopefully not your teacher, if so...you should challenge them. Most type designers dislike helvetica for the same reasons you explained. Designed well yes but boring as hell. I personally like Akzidenz Grotesk (the father to helvetica), especially condensed! Look up Josef muller brockmann. Might like some of his work.

      +Roberto Blake No, I have had a couple of clients before and I completely understand I'm making their vision, not mine. I don't mind doing what they want, I'm talking about my professors when I get out of the realm of minimalism they shut it down quick. They tell me minimalism is most desirable, so I should make my designs as such. I just feel that I need to apprentice a designer who doesn't constantly push minimalism.

    You're right abour freelancers, Roberto.
    If anyone in here thinks about how to start, I really recommend to go to free projects and do quality work.
    In this way you can be hired more easily.
    These things are same in the music making industry. Really great to hear your experience about hiring in graphic industry.

    You should do a video on top 5 or 10 books for web design. Just a thought. As always great content. Keep up the good work. God bless.

I mean, I am new to all this and I want to develop portfolio, But I dont know where to start from. It would be really awesome if you could link me to some video you have already done. Thanks ^_^

      Practice self initiated work and practice re creating professional work you see to try to understand how it was made. Learn through imitation to understand the process, then use what you learned to execute on your own creativity.

    Hey Roberto I'm a graphic designer and I feel drain from not being able to find work. I feel so tired where my creative thinking is affected as well. I graduated in 2000 and found a good job in 2001, and every since till 2012 work for the same company where I gain a lot of confidence, exposure and experience and even improve my skills significantly. Once the company let me go its been nearly impossible to find any kind of work and now nearly homeless living like a little kid. Its so embarrassing. Since 2012 my efforts has been useless no matter how much energy I put out trying to find work up to this point. I look a my work and feel proud because it has taken me a life time to learn so many software applications, and get my skills where they are now to produce professionally. Every since this social media, finding work seems more like rocket science. It should not be this hard where finding work in your own career is like scratching a lottery ticket. It's been so bad I wish I never went to school for this..

    I watched the 2013 Portfolio video and jumped straight to this one. I'm about to step into the industry in a few days and will definitely have many more questions that I may hit you up with in comments eventually. Just wanted you to know that your videos have really been motivating and helpful over these few months and I'm sure they'll continue to. There are a lot of videos out there but you cater to so many specific doubts within your videos itself and I wanna say thanks for doing that because it's very very helpful!

    Hey man, I really appreciate your videos you are giving me some helpful advices. I am a 15 year old student from switzerland and the education here is a bit different, I must think now with my age what I want to learn next year, I find that this profession is the perfect one for me, creating logos is something that i love to do in my free time and the fact of getting payed for it makes me excited. I would like to ask you if this profession has a good future, I mean a lot of people say Graphic Designers dont get not much payed. I also wanted to know if its important for this ptofession a degree on Graphic Design because here in my country I am not able to go to college because my notes in the school are not good enough for it. I could make something called Lehre its like an apprenticeship, you can start working with 16 so I really need to decide now I dont have a lot of time so ,do you think this is a good profession for me? I am Creative, love to use photoshop, have skills in drawing and I am pretty good in math. I also wanted to know if making the apprenticeship here and then going to a college will give me a good reputation as a Graphic Designer? Thank you for your answer. Hope u see my comment :)

    just graduated college, halfway through my student loan grace period. working a rough direct sales job while i panic about finding design jobs in the little time i have left in my day when i come home from work. in some ways i feel unprepared to be what i am but at least my internship keeps me feeling better about myself. if only they could pay me a salary instead of a mediocre stipend. I'm just scared is all...

    Hey roberto, i found your channel because of the copeyright explaining videos but they are all about what you can use if you monetize the videos. I was wondering what music i can use if i dont monetize videos? Sorry that this has nothing to do with video and maybe this is just commen sense, but i cant seem to find anything on youtube about it.

    Hey Roberto. As a multimedia student, I'm curious at to why you couldn't care less about someone having a degree? I feel that someone with a degree will almost always have an inherent better work ethic. They had to slave through far more than 40 hours a week of work and study etc. I can definitely see where you're coming from, portfolio and personality are more important but I think if someone has a degree it shows they do have a hard working personality. Of course anyone can have a good work ethic, but I feel if someone has a degree it's no doubt that they're are a hard worker.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went to college and I've worked with people from every walk of life and culture you can Imagine and work every day with business owners and entrepreneurs and can tell you with certainty that presumption of work ethic is false advertising perpetuated by academia.
      Hard work isn't the same as smart work, or talent or a good fit. An employer should value those things an the bottom line. A degree is no substitute for execution.
      You working hard doesn't equal you making me more money. You grinding through 4 years of school while someone else produced profits for 2 years doesn't impress me.
      It's like assuming a pretty girl will be a good girlfriend. It's just lazy storytelling that people buy when they don't know better or have experience.
      I for example have a better work ethic than most of my graduating class and I didn't finish my degree... Because while they were pleasing teachers I was out working them in real life and building a business and a brand... Which is why I also not to brag make more money than just about all of them...

    Perfect timing Roberto, this information was very useful to me. Currently I'm back in the job market looking for more work as I was told .... I was "not the perfect fit." This phrase really bothers me because a lot people in past interviews told me the same thing about myself. Where I didn't understand what "perfect fit" really means... define "perfect," no one in this world is perfect were all human and we all make mistakes. You could train someone to be your "perfect fit" but no one is going to have the same mindset as you when applying. I wish that people would be more considerate.

    • @persebra

      Perfect fit? That must be frustrating. I am just being nosy, but have you done research on the companies you interviewed with? Checked out their web sites, looked at their webinars and white papers, seen what conferences they are at? check out the social media of the staff to see what their taste are, what blogs they read? Look at their Behance accounts, That sort of thing. Maybe that will help you get a sense of where you could fit in.
      I have also heard local meet up are a good way to network I have never done it myself, but I am planning on it sometime in the future.
      good luck!

    • @christinatestana
      @christinatestana 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is frustrating as there's not much graphic design jobs in my area at the moment. I take what I can get as I don't want my resume to be outdated, I want to stay fresh and up to date. Every company that I even had an interview with I always check out their websites and their team to see what their about, and get a feel for the members on that team as well. For me I really try to give them a chance and be open minded as if I'm too picky I will never get a job. In the future I will definitely do more research on social media and their blogs.
      Networking and going to events is the number one thing to do to get your name out there. Unfortunately it's difficult for me as I don't have a car and currently working on my license, so I'm limited at the moment. Thats another reason why it hard to find good jobs.
      Thank you for reaching out to me and best of like to you in the future.
