  • • Graphic Design: How to... Graphic Design: How to Get Hired as a Graphic Designer. Many graphic designers on this channel have asked "How to become a graphic designer" or "how to get a graphic design job"?
    While I've answered this to varying degrees in other videos, I decided to address it in depth as much as possible because many of you have mentioned in the comments that you are having trouble getting hired. Hopefully the advice in this video will help you get a graphic design job, and help you understand what employers are looking for in a graphic designer.

    I have a question about attempting to do design for local businesses that have poor visual communication or lacking representation of their visual identities. Is it wise to create small amounts of demo work for them (Things that aren't going to have a huge impact if they just take them for free) and offer further services at my hourly rate if they express interest in my work?

    nice vid, let me ask, when you where talking in the beginning of your show you were talking about not caring about degrees, is it more important to apply your skills and develop a strong portfolio, or to finish school? the reason i ask is because i have to pay the last term out of pocket to finish my BA in graphic design, and was wondering if I'm just spinning my wheels trying to pay the school to finish or should i focus on the work itself and start knocking on doors?

    Just wanted to say this video helped me out tremendously in relation to what work I should be presenting in my portfolio. I have been out of design school for over a year now and have been working freelance jobs and have had one 3 month contract as an in house junior designer for a printing company. My goal is to be hired as a permanent in house designer for a design agency but i'm having trouble finding firms who are hiring. Should I just be sending out portfolios to every agency I can find or is there a better approach?

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      you should be sending out portfolios but also reach out to them on social media, especially LinkedIn

    Hey there, I am 17 and am hoping to leave high school and study for at least a bachelors in graphic design. You may not know my initial amount of talent or knowledge, and I don't have a way to present that, but I've always been drawing. I am taking digital art in high school and think that I have a very conceptual mind and a good start in my visuals, but the question is, from where I am, do you think that by the time I get a bachelors degree, if I'd be ready for a career in graphic design? Other factors like dealing with stress and my mentality should come with growth and time, but I still have my doubts on my own work as of now, despite the amount of knowledge that have yet to be welcomed to my brain.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      if you don't think you're good enough a degree is not going to tell you that you are. the worst thing a young person can do is wait for someone's permission to start their career and believe they can be successful.

    • @ajae311
      @ajae311 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roberto Blake thanks for that insight.

    • @ajae311
      @ajae311 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have another question (sorry for bombarding you, I'm just real set on doing this)
      I think I didn't phrase my question right. between the time I have this very second, to the moment I earn my bachelors degree, does that seem like enough time to build my visual style and gather experience doing free freelance work? I feel like I need to grow a lot more, is what I meant, not like "can I do graphic design? Oh golly I don't think I'm capable" it's more of a "how much better can I possibly get if I use every second toward this goal?"
      Again, I'm sorry for the long questions but it feels awesome to reach out to someone that's in the field. Also, is it any good to be adobe certified because I was able to get a certificate through school (and can a 17 year old can do free work for legit clients and not family and friends I dunno who'd hire me, but I really want to start as soon as possible)

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ChildishGuru The time you put in will always pay off in terms of increasing your ability to get better. Adobe Certified only really helps if you plan to teach or write for magazines.

    Where would the list of client references be placed? In the resume or would you make a note with each featured piece in your portfolio? Also if I had a clients work in my portfolio wouldn't I need their permission to showcases it and have their name and number?

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a clients' permission to showcase their work in your portfolio due to the DMCA, and you don't need to put a client list on your resume that is where you list it via "Experience" or "Work History" you can also reference them in the context of the text blurbs in your resume. Take look at my How to Design Your Resume video for specifics on that. As for the Portfolio stuff I have about 6-8 videos about portfolios and I walk through the Design of my own and how you call out who you did work for etc. So that will give you more context and information than I can give in a reply here if you check out those videos in the Graphic Design playlist on my channel. If you Go to my channel home page the Graphic Design playlist is the first featured playlist there and you can find the videos I mentioned.

I have a couple of question: 1st question is about self-promo/leave behind, is there's any tips that you can give us about leaving a great leave behind? 2nd question: this is about portfolio, do companies look for digital portfolio or do they look for printed portfolio, like say if you go to an interview, do they want us to bring a digital portfolio or do they care about printed portfolio?

    The best way to get your work out there without any prior work experience is to showcase it on a graphic centric website/forum. Then get people on facebook that are friends to art directors to share the link on their wall feed. I know many artist as young as 19 that get snagged up this way by huge agencies all the time. Just keep posting your artwork daily. Doesn't matter if its just sketches you do on the bus. Art Directors are more impressed with your executing principle than a polished end result. Also don't rush in to any company that welcomes you. Most of them abuse and overwork GDs for free. Get on Linkin and ask employees how the politics are like and what's their morale value working there. Narcissistic bosses are image driven and will prefer to hire workers that won't get all up there about labour laws and unethical treatments. You have been warned.

      Mentorship is something I'm only good at remotely and at scale via a platform because I'm too busy for the one on one time to really be meaningful. I can give advice in videos an in email but I'm too busy executing and doing things to hold people's hand and walk them through something. It's why I didn't become a teacher in tradition education.

    In video about how much do GDs make you mention very often that it depends of education, and here you are talking like education is not so important, is it or not, make your mind. You if anyone should be more consistent with information that you broadcast and not confuse people.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Milorad Menjic There's a difference and it's a matter of CONTEXT. Context matters more than being consistent, its one of the first things you have learn in the profession, being consistent is more than often just being lazy if you're not doing it in the proper context.So let me me clarify. In terms of NEGOTIATING SALARY it is important. Employers can use that to haggle you down. If you have a SOLID PORTFOLIO, not having a degree or college education won't keep you from getting an opportunity if you know what you are doing and have good presentation skills to back up that portfolio of work. So again. It's not that I'm being inconsistent and confusing, its about understand the context in which I'm presenting the information when talking about 2 completely different scenarios. People get the wrong information and are more confused when people make blanket statements for the sake of CONSISTENCY or not looking like they are flip flopping.

    • @mmenjic
      @mmenjic 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roberto Blake Sorry for bad expression, but English is not my native language, but you did get my point, explained it in some way, all I wanted to say is that it can be confusing if someone rally listen what you are saying and I did. I agree it depends on million things but education is important in every way you look at it.
      Again sorry for bad English but you understand what I am referring to.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Milorad Menjic not a problem, I'm not upset, I just wanted to clarify. Too often instructors will stick to the same stance without considering the Context, and it has always been a pet peeve of mine.

      Nothing specific, it all comes down to the same thing, identify companies doing work you want to do, put work in your portfolio that shows you can do that, and get in front of them and make a good presentation.

    Hello! I'm 13 and I'm wondering how I could start. I really like PhotoShop and am getting very good at it. How could I improved towards the graphic design? Have any suggestions?

      Matdrox hey kid, from personal experience, practice physical art more. As a graphic designer and animator I do 80% of all my designing on paper
