When Alan Rickman finally delivers the line with conviction, it gets me emotional every time. We see it all the time actors hating roles that they are famous for, yet it’s true that for some fans their character does connect with them in some way. It’s a love letter to Star Trek, sci-fi, and nerd culture all at once. One of my favorite films with great rewatchability.
I can see actors getting sick of it as well. Especially when they hear a famous line of theirs all the time. Kind of like musicians/singers/bands who actually hate their most famous tracks.
Tech Sergeant Chen is mellow because he's stoned. If you watch the part where he is transported to the station, when the jell recedes there is smoke from a joint to be seen. The bag is full of snacks because he has the munchies.
Originally there were more direct drug references but they were trimmed to get the PG rating. They filmed for an R but the studio forced them to edit down to PG.

Guy Fleegman, the most logical response that is overlooked in most old sci fi, "Hey don't open that, we're on an alien planet. Is there air?"

The Ship’s designation NTE stood for Not the Enterprise. Sam Rockwell’s scream caught Sigourney Weaver off guard, her reaction is genuine.

I've heard that the actor who plays the Thermian leader came to the audition with the alien behavior already worked out. The showrunners loved it, cast him and had him teach it to all the other alien actors.

I always assumed that Sigourney Weaver's character repeating the computer was a reference to Lt. Uhura's role in ToS. Whenever the Captain said "Open hailing frequencies," she replied "Hailing frequencies open."
It is. And the shirt taken off is about Captain Kirk who went shirtless for various reasons as well. The whole thing of taking the spotlight is also about William Shatner. There is a LOT of the original series in it.
Love this movie. It's 50% parody, 50% tribute, and 100% greatness.

For several years after Star Trek: The Original Series ended, Leonard Nimoy (Mr Spock) had despised having played the role. He even wrote a book, "I am not Spock." But he eventually gained an appreciation of the importance of the show to so many people that he wrote another book, "I am Spock" and became pleased to reprise the role in later productions. The fandom (including the Thermians) are the real heroes of the movie.
The trope of actors being mistaken as real heroes is pretty old, at least as old as Shakespeare. A couple of other relatively recent movies include The Three Amigos and A Bug's Life.
Loved your reaction. This is a movie I never miss on rewatch.
Not just being mistaken as heroes, but being mistaken AS what their characters are. Patrick Stewart was in a gay movie, and people started saying "huh, didn't know he was gay". He isn't. It's called acting... some people seem to have trouble separating actors from their roles.

Great timing. I didn't realize you were watching this today, and I literally just finished re-watching Ashleigh Burton's reaction and as soon as I click back to my home page, this is there waiting for me. What a great movie. Highly recommend tracking down the oral history that MTV did years ago (when Alan Rickman was still alive) about the making of the movie. It's a great read.
It's funny: it was a poll done years ago, but at a Star Trek convention they polled the attendees to rank the Star Trek movies, and they rated Galaxy Quest as like, the 6th or 7th best Star Trek movie ever made. Patrick Stewart was skeptical about it and thought it would be making fun of his work until other The Next Generation cast members (I want to say Jonathan Frakes?) told him he HAD to go see it, and he ended up loving it and seeing it multiple times in the theater. And George Takei was quoted saying it was basically a documentary. So, the Star Trek cast pretty much universally loves it, because at the end of the day, Galaxy Quest is a love letter to Star Trek and its fans.
Yep, it was Jonathan Frakes. Stewart said no one laughed louder or longer than him, and he loved the fact that it was fans who understood how the ship worked that basically saved the day.
The hat trick is that Ty Franck and Wes Chatham just devoted their whole latest podcast episode of "Ty And That Guy" to discussing this film.
So, Galaxy Quest was altered by the studio to make it more family friendly. The reason why Fred was so calm the whole time is that he's a massive stoner, but all references were cut. Notice how there's a lot of "steam" when he's coming out of the gel pod transporter thing?
It's worth looking up the reactions of the Star Trek cast to Galaxy Quest - they all loved it, once they were reassured it wasn't mocking the fans.

I do know the studio changed Sigourney's line in the scene with the clanging pistons. She actually says "Fuck that!!"
And Sigourney's obviously dubbed over swearing...
Gilligan's Island. True story. When first aired, thousands believed it was real, and actually called the studio asking if there was anything they could do to help find that castaways.

This has to be a joke. People actually believed it?
Fun fact about Guy being so worried about being the character who dies at the start of the show to prove things are serious: There's a trope called The Worf Effect, named after Worf from Star Trek TNG. As a big, strong Klingon, he's the go-to punching bag for any villain on the show to prove they are a serious threat. Worf also just so happens to be... The Chief Security Officer.
As a side note, at the end when the bbeg is shooting everyone on deck, Guy is the only one who _isn't_ shot.
The "Red Shirt" trope goes all the way back to the original Star Trek. All the security personnel wore red shirts. So everyone always knew those bros were toast in every episode. Red shirts became synonymous with phaser fodder.
Sam Rockwell (Guy Fleegman) and Alan Rickman are also in "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy". If you like Douglas Adams, it's a pretty good tribute with a great cast.

this is a great movie. An homage to Star Trek. Its not a parody, its a love letter to the show. It's like the TV show "The Orville", which is Seth MacFarlane's love letter to Star Trek: The Next Generation...
-You need to remember that the character of Fred/Tech Sargent Chen, played by Tony Schaloub, is high AF. The movies creators confirmed that it was in the script that Fred had gotten high before going to the ship. His attitude during the movie makes more sense when seeing it through that lens.

Gwen diMarco’s convergence point is when she snaps “I have one role on this ship, it’s stupid but I’m going to do it.” She declared that she was going to be more than eye candy. She had her job, it’s absurd, but it is just as important as Laredo’s or Chen’s. Really that arc continues through as they reach the chompers. “It’s stupid, but it’s real. We have to do this.”
Also, notice how Fred squints whenever people say his character’s name? Just some casual 90s racism played for comedy
Not strictly true. It's about how often white people played POC, and how tech bods in sci fi were almost always ''chinese'' ( they could be Korean etc but were just ''chinese'' for lazy purposes) so it's going way back through that history
Great movie tons with a ton of heart. Also Tony Shalhoub was pretty much high the entire time they filmed....There is an amazing Documentary all about the making of the movie and how it came to be it is worth a watch. It is called Never Surrender... Great video guys.

Robin Sachs has done a lot of voice over and heavy makeup work. His best known work w/o the make up was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Ethan Rayne. The boob interview for TV Guide happened with Jeri Ryan from ST: Voyager.

Tony Shalhoub's character, Fred, is high throughout the movie. That's why he's so laid back and always munching on snacks. Originally, that was mentioned in the story, but they had to cut the drug reference to get a lower age rating.
They left in just one: Guy asks Fred if he is stoned or something.
I'm so delighted you reacted to this movie. Despite a loose end here or there, I find it memorable and lovable, after repeated viewings. As you watched Gone Girl recently, you may be amused to know that there's one actor in common with this: Lailari, the female alien who moved to Earth to be with Fred, is played by Missi Pyle, who played the blonde TV personality seen throughout Gone Girl.

I think Jason Nesmith's personality was modelled after William Shatner's. Shatner has incredible mental resilience and at any given moment has 10 business ventures going.
"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make.;) Sigourney Weaver signed on to play the "Anti-Ripley" Blonde. She felt that "her IQ level drop" whenever she wore the Blonde wing...all the way home.

Tony Shalhoub squints because he is supposed to be playing a character called TSGT Chin. It pokes fun at the Kung Fu character of David Carradine who did the same through all of the TV series. The premise is a hoot and the cast does a great job. Good reaction. Thanks.

The moment when the crew 9s first transported to the ship and Sam Rockwell screams in horror was unscripted. You can tell if you watch Sigourney Weaver's reaction - she had no idea it was coming.

Robin Sachs (pronounced like "Sacks"). Unfortunately passed away. A very nice supporting actor, British by birth and acquainted with classical theater. He became fairly well known after appearing a couple of times as the character Ethan in
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer", where he clearly had fun, and invested his character with equal enjoyment and relish.
The scene in the bathroom with the guys bashing Tim Allen’s character, and saying he doesn’t realize how hated he is by his cast members and what a joke he is, is based on a true story that happened to William Shatner at a Star Trek convention.
Oh wow. Didn't know Shatner was seen like that. Did he have an shout at his fans as well?
@@RamblersInc I don't recall anything about him yelling at fans, but he did do an SNL sketch in the '80s where he's at a convention and gets tired of all the questions about obscure minutiae, so he berates the fans and yells at them to "Get a life!", which a lot of fans thought was in bad taste at the time. He did open the show saying that he respected the fans and hoped they had a sense of humor, or he was going to be in trouble, but some felt that the whole skit, how the fans were depicted, was a bit mean spirited. Didn't help that Roddenberry went on record saying that he didn't like it.
The scene in the restroom when Jason hears the teens ripping on him is based on a treu even William Shatner had when in a restroom at a Star Trek convention.
Sam Rockwell's swear after they are transported, and he saw the Thermians in their true form was improvised, ergo Sigourney Weaver's authentic reaction to it.
The Thermians' awkwardness in walking and talking is them trying really hard to imitate human movements and speech.
Before Snape, my fav Alan Rickman was The Sherriff Of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. To me, Tony Shalub will always be the cabby, Antonio Scarpacci, in the sitcom Wings.

Tony Shalhoub played Primo, the oldest of two Italian brothers in the magnificent movie, "Big Night", opposite Stanley Tucci. You should watch that one.

Two subtle things showing the Termians can't quite human. Most 9f their dialogue is done as an inhale instead of an exhale of breath. Also, as they walk, they swing their arms with the same side as their legs where humans swing opposite arm/leg

Im going to leave a quote form Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker STTNG). "I was at the CineramaDome in LA, and I saw it on a Saturday morning, or Saturday matinee. As I got out of the movie the first thing I did was call Patrick, who was in Toronto, I think, shooting X-Men. I said, “Dude, I just saw a movie that is about us and captures us like they’ve been reading our mail.” Patrick saw it that night. Then went again on the Sunday. And it was, I mean, some of the stuff in it is so on the nose and so accurate, and perfect, and funny. And Rickman. Rickman with the peeling makeup. Stuff that LeVar’s character does. I mean, it’s a favorite. I don’t know why that sequels never been made. I gather it’s encumbered with a lot of people who need money before they even shot, but this seems rife for a remake."
Such an amazing movie. It is a love letter to the show and the fans. From what I understand, the bathroom scene is based on something that happened to Shatner.
You need to watch "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary" about how it got made.
If you mean a sequel to this movie: There were plans to make a sequel, but then Alan Rickman died, and all the other actors decided it wouldn't be the same without him, so it never got made.
Guys, I'll give you some clues: "Monk" is always eating; chill and laid back no matter what; and, when he get's teleported to the ship, if you look carefully, smoke comes out of his "bubble" when it dissipates . . .

This film is on David Mamet's list of the only four perfect movies ever made. The others are the Godfather, A Place in the Sun, and Citizen Kane.
Patrick Stewart once called this film, "a frightenly accurate documentary."

I think that Sigourney Weaver's/Gwens character arc is:
She doesn't like Jason, because he's a jerk; she tells others "The Commander and I never had a thing." (And Jason is frustrated because he can't win Gwen in real life...) then...
Jason embraces honesty (to Mathezar) even when it's very painful for him, and he becomes the leader he portrays as Taggart, AND he becomes generous. NOW, Sigourney/Gwen can recognize his changed character, and can give Jason the love-admiration-affection that he's become worthy of receiving. She changes her attitude, and BECOMES the beautiful, gracious prize that Jason wins.
Additional: the DVD contains a cut scene involving Gwen: She uses her sexuality to lure 2 alien invaders into a trap, and the ship's security device crushes them, showing herself and everyone that she should 'be taken seriously' - more than just a hot blonde. (The cut scene occurs immediately before the 'Press the blue button' sequence. That's why Gwen suddenly emerges from the embrace with Jason with her boobs sticking out: she manipulated her costume/uniform during the cut scene.)
21:09 A bit after this Guy suggests to Jason that he make a rudimentary lathe. Which is a reference to Cpt Kirk constructing a rudimentary gunpowder weapon.

I love this film. It seems silly but it’s got such a charm.
Fred is so chill because he’s high the entire movie. That’s why he talks slow and us constantly munching, even on the way to the planet in the shuttle. To get the rating they wanted they had to remove all references to the drug.

The name of the alien in the original movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was Klatu.

I saw the original release and Fred was smoking a bowl throughout the movie. It was cut out, along with the swearing, so now he just acts weird.

I don’t know if it’s been said yet but if you look fast when everybody was getting shot on the bridge Guy was the only one of the group that didn’t get shot before the activation of the Omega 13. This movie was originally intended for the college age crowd and what was going on was different. That’s why Tony Shalhoub did Fred the way he did. The powers that be originally had Fred big time stoned and the powers that be liked his style and so they left it in. The story is he did it so well because he actually was stoned for a lot of production.

Galaxy Quest is actually a pastiche of Star Trek, and everybody loves it.

Lots of hanky panky went on at science fiction conventions in the 1960s-1970s, moreso the larger regional cons and Worldcons than the local specialized cons. Probably still does!
Just a note for anyone else who has the same thing happen. I commented here earlier, and mentioned in it that there's a great documentary out there about this movie, and where it could be found. The comment got deleted and I got a spam/deception warning. So, no matter how good that documentary is, do not let anyone know where they can find it. TH-cam doesn't like it.

It wasnt so much about the actors having a redemption arc. It was more about them embracing there characters. Weaver embraces the fact that all she does is repeat the computer. "I have one lowsy jobon this ship. Its stupid but im going to do it!!"

My favorite thing about this movie is the DVD release had an alternate audio track - completely in Thermian, (Not sure if it is available on other releases)

"For example, when I wrote my draft, Captain Starshine... which became Galaxy Quest...I got the idea when I was in an IMAX film. I was waiting for the film to start, and the trailers for the coming attractions started, and there was a feature coming called Americans In Space.
The voiceover for this trailer was Leonard Nimoy, and it took me a few minutes to recognize his voice. Then it just struck me, "Aw, that poor guy." I could just see these marketing guys putting this together saying, "Who could we get to do this?" "Oh, let's get William Shatner." "Oh no no, he's out of the country. Who else is there?" "Let's get Leonard Nimoy!" You know? The idea of being trapped in that world struck me as something potentially very funny. How do you walk away from that and decide, "No, I'm not going to do that anymore..."?
I'm betting it's more normal than we think for actors who are mainly known for one role all their lives.
@@RamblersInc It's difficult even if you are known for many other roles but one suddenly stands out. It happened to Maggie Smith too with her Harry Potter's character of Professor McGonagall when she suddenly found herself never able to go out in public without being recognized and approached and it has never stopped.

So, regarding Sigourney's role. They are poking fun at early sci fi and the tendency to have women as simply eye candy for the majority of viewers. Early sci fi had a much more limited audience. Teen age boys. This lead to women having less than important roles, like repeating everything the stupid fucking computer says 😆
Sci Fi has come a long way over the decades. I know you guys are currently watching The Expanse. Badass women like Drummer, Bobbi ot Naomi would have been unheard of in early sci fi.
Galaxy Quest pokes fun at sci fi tropes, but not in a malicious manner. It's all good joke and most of the sci fi fans don't take themselves too seriously. So the movie is beloved by sci fi fans.
"Spaceballs" (another funny movie is a funny parody of Star Wars. But SW fans love it.
People should enjoy whatever they like and not take themselves too seriously 😃
