As far as the falling-all-over-the-place-when-the-ship-takes-any-kind-of-damage: The TV shows do that with the shaky cam because that's just what they do....when the ship is bing shot and hittiing mines, the actors fall all over the place.....but the producers had a sadistic sense of humor and actually built the set to move, so the actors were LITERALLY falling all over the place. Violently. There were bruises and a bloody nose involved. I still dunno whether to offer kudos for attention to authenticity or lable it assault and battery...

Re: actors trying to survive after being in cult sci-fi shows -- Alan Tudyk, who played Wash on Firefly, wasn't getting a lot of work after the show ended, versus Nathan Fillian who played Captain Mal and got all kinds of leading man roles afterward. Tudyk was appearing at sci-fi fan conventions to get some income and based on those experiences Tudyk co-produced a crowdfunded web series called "Con Man" where Tudyk basically plays himself, trying to get acting work and doing the convention circuit. The show appeared on Vimeo and a second season on ComicCon's streaming service, then was re-edited into half hour episodes and shown on the SciFi cable channel.

It's called the "Star Trek Curse".
The cast of Star Trek were so typecast by their roles on Star Trek that they struggled to ever get another role. Nimoy's next gig after Star Trek (and Star Trek animated) was as the host of "In Search Of" and other than a few cameos and voicing Galvatron for the Transformer movie in 87 and the King in Disney's Atlantis only played Spock. His biggest post Star Trek roll was as the villain in Fringe (2008 FORTY years after TOS). He was able to work behind the camera after directing Star Trek 3 & 4. It was almost a decade before Shatner got another roll (TJ Hooker). His "recording career" was brief and he did "write" some sci-fi novels that they tried to make into a series in the 90s. His recurring role on Boston Legal didn't happen until this century. Walter Konig (Checkov) got some rolls in indie sci-fi/horror movies before his next Big Roll (on Babylon 5). George Takai did some voiceover work. Dohan never got another part, to my knowledge.
The biggest boost for their careers was when the movies started production.
And TNG followed suit. Other than Sir Patric Stewart, what other jobs did any of the cast ever work again? John Frakes started directing. They did voiceover work for Gargoyles. Levar Burton did a few more seasons of Reading Rainbow. Wil Weaton had a fun Tabletop game show on TH-cam.
And though it's called "the Star Trek curse" it's fairly typical of actors in sci-fi series from Stargate to Farscape. Sci-fi as a genre is generally frowned upon as something "less than" a real drama (even Soap actors can get rolls) and where your career goes to die. Maybe its because only "nerds" will be your fans? I don't know.

This movie wasn't a hit in theaters, but it really picked up steam as a cult classic on DVD and streaming. They had planned on making a sequel but Alan Rickman's death sank those plans. I HIGHLY recommend the documentary. You learn how the alien race speech and behavior came about.
This was 1999. He debut of Justin Long. Possibly the debut of Sam Rockwell (Guy) who also did The Shawshank Redemption that year. Darryl "Chill" Mitchell (Laredo) was in 10 Things I Hate About You as a teacher. He was later paralyzed in a car crash and continues to act from a wheelchair. You may know Missy Pyle from Dodgeball as the scary woman on Ben Stiller's team. Tony Shaloub (Chen) played the character as stoned. He was on Wings, the lead on Monk, and the alien gun dealer in Men in Black. Sarris is the late Robin Sachs, who makes a guest appearance on Buffy. No spoilers. Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) was later Veronica Mars' dad, the lead in excellent Canadian SWAT style cop show Flashpoint, and a recurring character on Person of Interest.
BTW, Alan Rickman is never shown without his headpiece, including in his own apartment.

Who knew it was possible that the greatest parody of a genre could at the same time be the most perfect homage. It takes me back to my youth watching William Shatner roll around in the dust while the music drummed in "Dat. Dat. Dah. Dah. Dah. Daht. Dah. Dah. Dah." And attending the ascension of comic book conventions at the Holiday Inn before having to pay for signatures or lay down bread for a photo op at the mega cons. When $400 could land you an original page of Jack Kirby art. Hats off to everyone in the cast. Including Sam Rockwell and Alan Rickman, who surprised me with comedic skills I did not know they had.
One odd bit... in the DVD release there's a frame cut from the film. In the beginning when Jason Nesmith is on all fours looking for his shoe he asks the "actors" to help him look for it, there is a shot from in front of him and them looking at him from behind. In the movie release there is a brief shot from their POV. A full on shot of Tim Allen's rear end facing them. In the moment, the audience doesn't know what's going on yet, and the shot is so outrageous that it tips us off that whatever story we thought this story was going to be, this was not going to be 'that' story. I get why it was cut. But I wish the Studio felt the audience was are mature enough to handle it.
Although on reflection, given how the movie is absolute PERFECTion for kids and old folks like me who are 'kids' at heart, it was probably a perfect edit.

Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman's character) clearly started out as a stage actor ("Five curtain calls!"). He takes acting seriously; it's the most important thing in his life. That's why he suggests figuring out the rock monster's motivation; motivation is fundamental to an actor. But since being on _Galaxy Quest_ (the television series) he's been type cast and is unable to get acting jobs. He's reduced to getting minor fees from conventions and appearing at shopping center grand openings. And "that line" is the symbol of the thing that is preventing him from doing the only job he has ever wanted to do. No wonder he's bitter about it.

This is one of the most well-written comedies ever. Things get more and more ridiculous and then just when you're reaching the saturation point, BAM! they hit you right in the gut with a serious moment (Quellek's death, Mathazar saying they are the last of their race, the torture of the previous captain, etc). It's a real roller coaster to watch. Really glad you guys liked it. Perhaps it hit your editing room floor, but I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize Rainn Wilson from "The Office" in his role as Lahnk.

Tony Shalhoub was originally supposed to be stoned throughout the duration of the movie, but because the studio decided to make it a pg-13 release they had to cut around it. You can see other signs of the movie originally being rated R, like the dubbed over "f**k" that Sigourney Weaver says when they get to the chompers.

Such a perfect movie, poking fun at all the tropes and clichés, but never in a mean-spirited way - it's laughing WITH the Star Trek / sci-fi fans, not AT them. Und just like Shaun of the Dead, it's not just a good spoof or parody, it's a good genre film in its own right. Even manages to get all emotional and dramatic with Mathesar and Quellek instead of just being a funny movie. Even the effects hold up surprisingly well.

There's another joke I think a lot of people miss. Fred's character is Asian, but he's not. Whenever his name is mentioned by the Thermians, or he's on camera in the context of the show, he squints his eyes, in reference to the offensive stereotype of "yellowface" used by white actors to play Asian characters. When Fred's first seen at the opening, he suddenly squints his eyes after saying, "It can't be stopped!". He does it the second time when the Thermians call him "Tech Seargent Chen", and the last time in the opening to the new Galaxy quest adventures when he looks up at the camera. It's one of those subtle jabs at older movies and shows.

Some trivia: I do believe this was Justin Long's first role. Guy's scream when seeing the Thermians without their appearance generators was an ad lib. Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) came up with the way the Thermians speak. Colantoni is also great in Veronica Mars and Person of Interest.

Something to keep in mind on rewatch, and I think was confirmed by Tony Shaloub, is that the reason Tech Sergeant Chen is so mellow is because he was super baked the whole time. That is why he is always snacking, he has the munchies. Due to rating I think the didn't want any overt allusion to drug use, even weed, so they just do it as subtext. Next to Brad Pitt in True Romance, Shaloub is probably my favorite onscreen stoner. The other thing about Chen is the subtext, that his name is Chen but the actor isn't Chinese or any of the subcultures that also have that common surname. So basically TS Chen is a non-asian actor in "yellow face" like David Carradine in the old show Kung Fu or other messed up representation in films up through the 90s or even early 00's.
I think This movie and the Princess Bride are two perfect movies that should never be remade. I could see them doing a sequel to this movie though, if they had a really good script and if treh original director was willing. It wouldn't quite be the same without Alan Rickman (big RIP) but they could totally do something with it like 25y later. The show is rebooted in the end of this movie but that cast also basically introduced earth to its first alien species. I would 100% buy any of the characters as the leaders of a version of The United Federation of Planets from Star Trek for this world. All so much older now but Sam Rockwell is the only one who could still pull off being an action lead so it would be cool if he was like the new captain on the protector with the remaining cast coming back to deal with a new threat.
But also maybe just don't because this movie us genius.

Kwai Chang Caine is half-Chinese, half-American so David Carradine wasn't exactly portraying "yellowface".

David Howard about how he got the idea for the movie.
"For example, when I wrote my draft, Captain Starshine... which became Galaxy Quest...I got the idea when I was in an IMAX film. I was waiting for the film to start, and the trailers for the coming attractions started, and there was a feature coming called Americans In Space.
The voiceover for this trailer was Leonard Nimoy, and it took me a few minutes to recognize his voice. Then it just struck me, "Aw, that poor guy." I could just see these marketing guys putting this together saying, "Who could we get to do this?" "Oh, let's get William Shatner." "Oh no no, he's out of the country. Who else is there?" "Let's get Leonard Nimoy!" You know? The idea of being trapped in that world struck me as something potentially very funny. The bag of snacks was his idea, for instance, and then they ran with that - Fred's late arrival at the Thermian starport gave Sam Rockwell the opportunity to improvise that scream (Sigourney looked startled because she WAS startled), which gave Tony and Tim the chance to improvise Fred's and Jason's response to it.

I don't know if it was in the version you watched, but the reason Gwen has her boobs almost out at one point is that when she and Jason reached the self-destruct, they were caught by two Thermians, but she went with the trope and distracted them by opening her shirt, which they found "strangely alluring", enabling Jason to kill them. This (plus her "F*** that") was retained in some VHS or DVD releases, although all the scenes showing that Fred was, indeed, stoned throughout were cut before any releases.
The dynamics between Jason and the other actors (and some fans), implied for the original show and portrayed at the Convention, are not all that distant (though doubtless exaggerated) from the real life situation with William Shatner and the other actors of the original series Star Trek. (The "There's no God-damn ship!" incident reportedly happened at one ST con much as shown.)
