Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) invented the way the Thermians speak and move when he auditioned for the movie. Beside winning him the role, it made him the standard that all actors playing Thermians in the movie had to learn from and emulate. He is largely responsible for making the Thermians so funny yet so heartfelt and lovable too.
💯👍♥️
Since you love Sam Rockwell, you will want to check out his starring role in a small budget but brilliant sci-fi movie, "Moon". No spoilers but he carries the movie brilliantly.
If you really like Alan Rickman, then I highly recommend Quigley Down Under, truly ruthless.
And Sam Rockwell is brilliant in The Way Way Back.
"By Grabthar's hammer..." is one of the best payoffs in cinema. It means nothing until the moment it means everything.
I was just invested in his hatred for that line... until he actually said it with meaning, then it just became that much better
If I ever buy a boat I will name it Grabthar's Hammer. And my dinghy Son of Whorvan
@@VerowakReacts which juat shows, what a great actor alan was... in the beginning, you can actually feel his disgust, when saying that line, while he is dying inside...
and then at the end... WHOM! same line...different everything....
Also it kind of show how little any phrase TRULY means.. when it comes to what is being said, or who is saying it.. and ALL value is derived from the listener and their emotional investment in the phrase.
You nailed it when you said Fred seemed high. That’s exactly why he’s so chill and constantly munching. They had to remove all references to the actual drug, but if you know, you know.
Famously, Patrick Stewart refused to watch Galaxy Quest but was convinced to go see the movie by Jonathan Frakes after he had seen it and loved it. It would be really easy to assume that with its premise the movie is mean-spirited but it just oozes so much heart. I can't imagine anyone not being won over by Galaxy Quest
Frakes: Go see it Patrick, it's really funny and they shit all over Shatner.
Stewart: I'm in!
It’s been called the perfect movie
Interview quote form Jonathan Frakes. "I was at the CineramaDome in LA, and I saw it on a Saturday morning, or Saturday matinee. As I got out of the movie the first thing I did was call Patrick, who was in Toronto, I think, shooting X-Men. I said, “Dude, I just saw a movie that is about us and captures us like they’ve been reading our mail.” Patrick saw it that night. Then went again on the Sunday. And it was, I mean, some of the stuff in it is so on the nose and so accurate, and perfect, and funny. And Rickman. Rickman with the peeling makeup. Stuff that LeVar’s character does. I mean, it’s a favorite. I don’t know why that sequels never been made. I gather it’s encumbered with a lot of people who need money before they even shot, but this seems rife for a remake."
And Stewart said that no one laughed louder or longer than he did. George Takei called it a documentary.
and george Takei called it a chillingly accurate documentary. lol
The reason Tony Shaloub's character is so chill thru out the show is because his character is supposed to be stone the whole time.
IIRC, they cut the fact to keep the PG rating.
Someone mentioned that he got high in the bathroom and I asked someone on TikTok if they had a link to the scene but I didn't get any luck.
I love how when we hear Sigourney say "well screw that!" she very very clearly actually mouths "well fuck that!" :p
That was the director’s protest to the ratings change. Did a reshoot but only used the audio.
Also her referring her times in Alien movies.
So glad you enjoyed this great historical document.
I want to refer to TV series and movies as historical documents now haha
Surely you don't think Gilligan's Island....
I love Enrico Colantoni is amazing in everything he's in. So much range.
Overall, as a life-long Trek fan, I adore this movie. Its a love letter to scifi entertainment.
I need to see Enrico Colantoni in more movies it seems lol
This film is love letter to fans everywhere. When you can, watch the documentary, the making of galaxy quest. A masterpiece.
Tim Allen works when he’s playing off his own persona. He’s a great choice as a “Shatner” stand-in here and they do essentially the same thing in Toy Story.
He's very good at playing an over-confident doofus.
You have to see some old Star Trek to really get some of the jokes. Lazarus says to Taggart, I see you managed to get your shirt off. That seemed to happen to Captain Kirk all the time. It also reflects real life rivalry between Leonard Nimoy and Shattner- YOU STOLE MY BEST LINES AND CUT ME OUT OF EPISODE 2 ENTIRELY!!!
Welcome to what I call the greatest Star Trek Movie of All Time. It was a hysterical Love letter To Star Trek and I love every moment of it !!!!!!! The cast the script the acting and the perfectly timed comedy it was perfection !!!!!!!!
When this came out one wag said that the two best Star Trek movies ever made were this & Master and Commander.
I totally agree. I own the movie and have watched it over 20 times easily. I watch at least once a year. It’s fantastically hilarious.
The character of Fred was literally high throughout the movie. That's why he's so chill.
Alan Rickman's character's obvious distain for his signature line early in the movie is portrayed as a such a soul crushing experience, is the perfect set up for when he finally says it with full purpose and meaning, where it resonates with emotional impact. I watched this movie multiple times, and I still get a little teary eyed at that scene.
It's the perfect set up and the perfect delivery! His hatred for it, and the heartfelt delivery at the end too 😊
7 of 9 was added mid series to try to give the show some sex appeal. But she actually ended up making the show much better because the character ended up being very deep and interesting. A credit to Jeri and the writers.
Lol I'm glad you noticed that the only person that didn't get shot was Guy
Also another funny Rickman anecdote: Tim Allen needed a moment to compose himself after filming his apology to Mathesar, Rickman mocking congratulated Tim on discovering acting.
Tony Shalhoub's character was originally meant to be stoned (you can see a puff of smoke when he teleports in) hence his apparent indifference to the situation they find themselves in but the shot of him smoking a joint was cut. IMO It's funnier that he just accepts everything at face value and runs with it.
Alan Rickman is a gun slinging villain in Quigley Down Under. A western yes a western
When Tony Shaloub was hired to play Fred Kwan, the character hadn't really been developed and he basically had free reign. Sam Rockwell convinced him to play it as a stoner with a constant case of the munchies. And so Fred was born.
That's amazing!!
I've heard that when Gwen said "Whoever wrote this episode should die!," Sigourney Weaver was looking directly at the writer.
That makes that line even better 🤣
I love that they treated the sci-fi fans with respect and not just mocking them
Did they? They literally called the fans delusional nerds who never go outside.
@jkhoover I've seen every Star Trek series like 50 times...I AM a nerd who doesn't go outside 😂😂 it's not disrespectful if it's the truth
@@tif8266 I've been on 5 Star Trek Cruises, I was also in the army. Not really the truth.
@@jkhoover Yao Ming is tall and is Chinese, so.... Don't call out an exception as if that's the norm.
If the name of the actress weren't listed in the credits of both movies, you'd never believe that Gwen is the same person as Ripley. It's almost as impressively anti-typecast as Lt. Commander Data also being the crazy scientist in Independence Day.
After many viewings, Tony Shaloub's character became my favorite. Total chill stoner vibe.
Guy being the only one not killed in the end is such an underappreciated joke.
One of my favourite jokes of the movie 😂
everytime i see someone reacting to galaxy quest, i have to watch i can rewatch the movie every time. who else.
Not only is this movie perfect, and it gets more perfect every time you watch it. Early in the film the Thermions say they are from the Klaatu nebula. Klaatu is the name of the alien who visits Earth in the original film The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Klaatu barada nicto...RIP Gort...😁
So glad you liked it, Verowak! This film is one of the best sci-fi comedies of all time! The _Star Trek_ fandom and even some of the original actors have praised it, and a poll of hard-core fans famously rated it as the 7th best Star Trek movie of all time... ahead of six *actual* Trek movies! There are so many fantastic performances, notably Allan Rickman as an accomplished Shakespearean actor dragged into playing a science fiction character... Patrick Stewart, anyone? 😉 But my personal favorite is Sigourney Weaver, Ellen Ripley herself, one of the most badass characters in the history of science fiction, playing a role that couldn't be more her opposite! 🤣
And that she loved so much she took the wig home after filming.
Not just Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy as well.
@@galadballcrusher8182 I did not know that... Thanks for the info!
@@philstubblefield funnily enough the other actor who had done plenty shakespeare was Shatner
@@galadballcrusher8182 That makes sense in a strange way, because his somewhat stilted delivery would seem better suited to stage work, where dialog must be clear to viewers in the back of the theater without as much reliance on amplification.
13:02 Little “Trek” reference here - Jason says his steak tastes of “corn-fed Iowa beef”; James T. Kirk is from Riverside, Iowa.
I've seen this so many times and never thought to pun it "Grab Thor's Hammer." Thanks so much, Verowak! You're awesome. Love all your reactions.
This movie was such a surprise when it came out. Wasnt expecting much, but was blown away when a friend of mine and I went to see it. The whole theater just laughing the entire time. What a gem this film is.
Unfortunately, it was a box office failure. The studio completely screwed the marketing. It was years later on the home video / DVD and TV market when the movie finally became a success and a cult classic.
Alan Rickman was in the movie Dogma (if you can find a copy of it) along with Ben Afleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, Selma Hayek, Jason Lee, George Carlin and of course Kevin Smith who wrote and directed it.
Agreed, fantastic film
The funny thing is, that the standing joke is that Guy is the first who is going to die, but actually he is the only one not getting shot before they activate the Omega13.
Yeah, that's why I love that scene so much 😁
My favorite line is " Lets get out of here before one of them kills Guy!"
Yes!! I love everything about Guy's character and how the others follow suite lol
"Moon" is a definite must see Sam Rockwell movie. Directed by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones. I would also suggest "Confessions of a dangerous mind."
I love that as the serious actor, Alan Rickman never takes his headpiece off even at home.
I figured it must take hours to get the makeup on. Since he had another gig at the store opening the next day, he probably decided it would be easier just to leave it on overnight.
Sam Rockwell was good fun in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Alan Rickman is also brilliant in it.
As others have mentioned, this was a love letter to Star Trek, and dedicated convention fans. The idea that this is one of the greatest Star Trek films ever made is shared by fans, and even some of those who have been a part of the ST franchise, be it in front of or behind the camera.
The aliens and their awesome "cosplay" 😊
Three more Alan Rickman films: Love Actually (for the Holidays), Quigley Down Under, and Bottle Shock.
Sam Rockwell: JoJo Rabbit.
Enjoyed your reaction to this gem.
Alan Rickman was a true delight. It totally sucks he died way too early.
Unfortunately they were in the later stages of planning the next galaxy quest 2 when he passed.
No, he died exactly when he was always going to.
Alan Rickman is absolutely amazing in EVERYTHING.
Verowak: That dude's gotta be an alien, or high as a kite.
Yeah, he's definitely high! The joke is he's basically playing engineer Scotty, who's super high strung in the show, but the actor playing him here is a super mellow stoner IRL
They way Enrico was warming his vocals became the way all of the Thermians spoke their lines!
By Grabthar's hammer, what a reaction. It was such a great story, and it was fun watching this along with you Verowak 😀
As you love Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver there is another movie they made together - "Snowcake" - practically the two of them carry the whole movie. Again they are playing characters that are completely different to what they are usually known for and again its a movie that is criminally underrated (in my opinion). "Snowcake" is a fantastic gentle, deeply emotional while still surprisingly funny movie. The main role was written for Alan Rickman and it was him who suggested Sigourney for the her role and even brought her on board, which shows how good he was in his craft as I would never ever could imagine her in such an role but she was fantastic. I don't think anyone had made a reaction to this movie, but even if you don't consider it for a reaction I could only recommend it to watch at least for yourself.
Galaxy Quest is a underrated gem and so is Snowcake. Sadly we lost Alan Rickman way too soon , he was an hell of an actor in anything he did.
7 of 9 was introduced like this, true - and sadly Jeri Ryan had a really hard time on set. But thanks to her acting and some quality writing, the character became so much more than that. Actually, one might complain that at some point, Voyager pretty much became mostly "The Doctor and Seven Show", in that they devoted so much time to these characters (which, admittedly had the most interesting premises) that the development of other characters suffered. Still - great character, great actress.
It was cut for final release but Fred Kwan's character Tech Sergeant Chen was supposed to have been high throughout... hence the groove and constant snacking through the movie
26:48 Nope. As you ended up seeing, Guy was the only crewman _not_ to get shot. 😂😂😂
The running joke with Fred (Tony Shalhoub's character) is that he's high throughout the whole thing, but for ratings purposes they had to cut the scenes of him actually getting high.
They were originally open to an R rating, hence the weed joke and Weaver's badly redubbed F bomb
A hidden gem? I don't know how hidden it was, but I first saw it on TV and was pleasantly surprised. Real fun.
The aliens feel so sorry for those castaways on Gilligan's Island ;-)
12:35 Funny Fact: The registry letters that are scrapped off were “NTE” which stood for “Not The Enterprise” 🤣
Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie ever made.
"Back after 18 years..." Nice reference since 18 years was the gap between the end of Star Trek:TOS and Star Trek:Next Generation. Impressed that you got many of the subtle references, eg. Guy being the one NOT getting killed whilst playing the "red shirt".
I didn't know that 18 years was the gap between TOS and TNG, that makes it just that much better! I just thought it was a random amount of time, but it was purposeful!!!
Speaking in electrical engineering terms, if there was ever a 1:1 impedance match, it's between you and this movie.
10:05 Holy crap - never noticed Weaver nearly jumps out of her tight suit when "Guy" screams his head off :)
Alan Rickman is also in the View Askewniverse (specifically Dogma), Quigley Down Under, Bob Roberts, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (not nearly as good as the BBC series, but a great cast [including Sam Rockwell])...for more Sam Rockwell see Jojo Rabbit, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Moon, Matchstick Men, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the MCU (Iron Man 2 and All Hail the King specifically)...for more Sigourney Weaver see the Alien movies (I'd stop after the first two), Cabin in the Woods, Gorillas in the Mist, Death and the Maiden, Avatar, Wall-E, Finding Dory, Working Girl, the Ghostbusters movies (continue past the first two at your own risk), Be Kind Rewind, Dave, the MCU again (specifically Defenders this time)...
18:30 Mystery solved - yes, he actually is high The "popcorn" he brought with him are just more edibles
The scene of him "getting there" just before they got transported from Earth to the ship, has been cut for rating reasons
"First time? You'll get used to it..."
That's what she said...😂
My favorite Sam Rockwell movie is Mr. Right. If you're a fan and haven't seen it, you definitely should! It's a love story about an assassin.
Oh yeah! Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick! They are a great pair.
Loved that movie! A hidden gem.
“Guy” was so clearly marked to be the Red Suit casualty. But he survived! Yay for him!
I love Guy defying the red shirt trope 😁
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is another film with Alan Rickman, fun film and good book too. Paul has Sigourney Weaver. Jojo Rabbit has Sam Rockwell. The Santa Clause stars Tim Alan if you want a good holiday film.
Sam Rockwell is also in "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy".
Fred the mechanic guy was actually supposed to be stoned throughout the whole movie, which is why he acts the way he does and is always eating, but they cut those scenes showing and explaining that to make the PG13 rating.
I think you'd love 'The Way, Way Back' Sam Rockwell's performance is so beautiful in it and it's a film that gets slept on by a lot of people.
'Stranger than Fiction' is another one that has some spectacular performances that doesn't get enough attention.
Tim Allen has been in a few other movies, including The Santa Clause trilogy, Toy Story, and Big Trouble (2002). That last wasn't liked by critics, but I enjoyed it.
The movie isn't a love letter to Star Trek the show, but rather a love letter to fandom. And they really do have "walk through" simulations of various Enterprises.
One bit you seemed to have missed; while being directed by Brandon, they have to crawl through some ducts. At this point Weaver mutters "ducts; _why_ is it always ducts?"
Fun Fact: in the movie, the new Galaxy Quest premiered 18 years after the end of the first series. By coincidence (or not) 18 years is also the time between the end of the original Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
P.S. Star Trek has always been massively sexist when it came to women's wardrobe, thanks for Roddenberry. The original series had the miniskirt uniforms, not to mention the "barely there" designs by Bill Thiess for many guest stars. Even The Next Generation featured the short skirt uniforms for a time. Star Trek: Voyager with Seven of Nine was the low point; Google images of Seven of Nine and you'll see what I mean. They poured her into cat suits that left nothing to the imagination.
The story goes that Patrick Stewart especially refused to watch the movie until several fellow cast members urged him to give it a try. He loved it.
Other excellent work by Sam Rockwell is in JoJo Rabbit (2019) where plays a side character, but a great role in a great film, and Moon (2009), where he is most definitely the lead.
Upvote both recommendations. JoJo Rabbit is an amazing unique must-watch film, full of stellar performances, and is very popular with TH-cam reactors. Moon is a really solid film as well, though not as well known, and not often reacted to. I expect you'd garner a lot more views with JoJo
Rockwell's performance in Moon is a tour-de-force, and an apt follow-up to this - along with A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The reason Alexander never takes off the headpiece is because the makeup and prosthetics can take several hours. It’s just not worth it to take it off if you have a gig the next day.
It’s one of those movies where I can’t really say anything negative about it. It did everything that it needed to do.
Fun fact 1 - Sigourney Weaver liked her blond wig so much she kept it.
Allen's character was such a perfect critique of William Shatner, after he mocked his fans so mercilessly. I'm sure someone else mentioned it, but just in case... Shaloub's character was supposed to be high the whole time, but the scene showing that got cut. ♥
10:33 holy crap that's Sam Lloyd! ie the lawyer from Scrubs. Ive watched this a number of times and never noticed him being in it
Me neither. I guess we don't recognize him, unless he's flop-sweating like Ted?
Mathesar kinda reminded me of a cross between Andy Kauffman and Robin Williams. This is one of my favorite films of all time. It is one of the few that I go back to a few times per year. I am glad that "The Twist" with the convention attendees caught you by surprise. Original viewers didn't really have that luxury - at least not as much. The trailers pretty much spelled out what the movie was going to be about, so we were expecting the twist. We just didn't know when it would happen.
An interesting thing about the intro, is that when it was shown in theaters, the curtains are drawn partially closed, to match the opening aspect ratio. When the opening clip ends, then the curtains were drawn open, as we are introduced to the convention setting. It kinda provides a nice & dramatic opening to the movie. I think it was a nice touch. Not only would it have looked strange, if the movie opened with black bars on the ends, it makes it less obvious that something is different, until the actual movie starts, and you realize that you've been watching the movie in a different aspect ratio.
The movie was presented as a comedy, but I also think it has some weighty moments to it as well. Even though there are laughs to be had, I think it also makes a good light-hearted sci-fi drama. It stands with the best sci-fi offerings that don't have "Star" in their name.
Fun Fact : Sam Rockwells scream was ad libbed so Weavers startlement was genuine
There's always someone who just _has_ to repeat what was said in the video for no reason...
@@Blutteufel cool
Tony Shalhoub was playing Fred Kwan (Tech Sergeant Chen) as a stoner. He has the munchies throughout, and he takes (almost) everything in stride. This also explains his "group hug" management style in engineering.
Also, note that Fred is a caucasian portraying an Asian. This was a choice he made long ago when he selected "Fred Kwan" as his stage name. Every once in a while you'll see him squint, in an unsuccessful attempt to depict epicanthic folds.
This is the kind of thing that actually happens in Hollywood - think of David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine in _"Kung Fu."_
Ahh I noticed his squinting but just thought he was weird 😂
@@VerowakReacts That too.
Often described as a love letter to the original Star Trek, it has become beloved in it’s own right. Please consider watching 2007 Atonement 🙏😁
Enrico Colantoni(Mathezar) aced his role in this. He was also good as a regular in "Veronica Mars" and as a guest star on "Person of Interest," in distinctively different roles.
he really pulled it off! Mathesar was endearing and hilarious and just great
I love the “does rolling help?” Line by Sigourney Weaver😁 Also, the use of the famous Shatner shoulder roll to zap Sarris at the end.😁
No one seems to notice that when the Commander asks the ship about the beryllium sphere it doesn't respond but when she asks the ship it responds showing that her role is important in some way.
That's just it. Every crewmate was important in their own way. Take one of them away, and the ship begins to fall apart.
On the making of Galaxy Quest, they say "Fred" was burnt out, not high on drugs.
This movie proves that it is possible to make a perfect movie. This is it.
The guy not phased by anything was stoned. But they removed all pot references to get a PG rating.
It's "The 3 Amigos" in space. Great film 😄
One of my favorites. I miss movies like this. Great reaction as usual!
"Designed for your anatomy, not ours." is referring to the controls of the device made for human hands and not tentacles.
you missed out Tony Shalhoub as Fred, had a part in Men in Black as the pawnbroker who has his head shot off multiple times and of course same in MIB2, but probably best known for the series 'Monk' - one of my favourite /police/detective shows
There's a deleted scene that explains why Gwen's shirt got opened, as a trick to kill one of the baddies
This movie is such a joy, all the way through. Great caracters, so fun, and a loving, respectful spoof of star trek.
Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite movies and as for Sam's unexpected scream another movie that had something held back was Alien. The director and special effects crew didn't inform the actors as to what was going to happen in the chest-exploding scene. The director wanted a real reaction from the actors.
_"Is Guy gonna die, and then they're gonna reverse it and bring him back to life?"_ Stellar comment! 😄 Thanks for the reaction!
That would have been amazing!! But I also liked that everyone else was dying except for him 🤣🤣
This movie was my introduction to Alan Rickman. I think this was also the first movie I ever saw on DVD. Memories!
It has some great actors and it’s one of my favorite movies. It’s so funny. Ridiculously hilarious. I love this movie!
Now that you've seen it, you can see why alot of people, including me, have so much fun watching it. It was fun watching your reaction to the movie too lol.
Only Sam Rockwell isn't killed: priceless!
10:03 for Weaver's reaction to Rockwell's ad-lib scream
Two other memorable Alan Rickman performances can be seen in "Quigley Down Under" and "Dogma."
I love Sam Rockwell's character in this one. Especially that he keeps pointing out the dangers, then ends up becoming the security chief!
Matchstick Men is a great Sam Rockwell movie, if you're interested. It also has Nicolas Cage, in a very underrated performance.
So far, the two movies I've seen him in, he is just fantastic! Really seems to have fun with his roles
I don't believe you've ever laughed this much, start to finish, ever. Great reaction.
I went to a gaming convention and there was a group that had a full size Enterprise bridge model with working controls, screens and uniforms and they would roleplay Star Trek!! The Questians have nothing on Trekkies! But they are a love-letter to them in this movie, for sure. So it's not that far fetched that the Commander thinks he's going to a role-playing set instead of a real ship.
Thank you, lovely lady, for another fun reaction. 🤗
For a Sam Rockwell recommendation, I suggest "Jo Jo Rabbit". He plays a very entertaining character. The movie itself sounds rather odd but is actually fantastically good. Also stars Taika Waititi, Scarlett Johansson, Rebel Wilson and Alfie Allen.
His performance in Moon was great too
Other Tim Allen movies - The Santa Clause 1994, Toy Story 1995, Joe Somebody 2001, Big trouble 2001
Somehow I wrote it off as an average comedy back in the day, but in review this is such an intelligent and funny script, and a love letter to old sci-fi shows and acting and fan-nerds ... there's so much going on script wise and it's actually kind of brilliant. And of course, Alan Rickman is legendary in every role.
The script is indeed really great!! It's nice being able to rewatch a movie and seeing it in a different light! I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if I watched it like 10 years ago
Yeah, Galaxy Quest is a great film. So much fun.
It really it! Every character is great
