- This was a bucket list dive of mine for a long time. After moving to Navarre Florida and having Pensacola right down the road I knew I was going to make it happen. I you do not have this dive as a top 10 dive site destination, you need to! What an experience. In this video I talk about the limits for recreational limits and gas planning if you are making a trip to the Mighty O. June and early July are a great time to dive the Oriskany as the water is getting warm but the visibility is still good, plus the sandbar sharks and the bull sharks will be in the area.
Your Nitrox should be at 28% and no more than 30%. Plan to dive within your Maximum Operating Depth and watch your NDL time. Start your dive at its deepest depth first and make your way up and around the tower. With a good SAC rate you should be back at the line with about 750-1000 PSI on a steel 100 tank.

I started this channel to prove to my son that I could get to 1000 subscribers...check! I am was an Active Duty Air Force member with over 23 years of service and now retired. My career has brought me to some awesome locations that I was able to call home, from the Rocky Mountains to the Swamps of South Georgia and everywhere in between! After retiring we moved to Navarre Florida where I can fish right out my back door...almost. My family and I have a strong passion for the outdoors from hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, to SCUBA diving and spearfishing. Where will we go next?

I served aboard the Oriskany from 1971-1974 during the Vietnam war with VA155. I wished it was in shallower water so you could at least dive on the flight deck and hanger bay. I would love to dive the Oriskany but I'm too old and have Parkinsons which I got from being exposed to Agent Orange. My shop was right on the inside behind the aft gun tub. I was taking a snooze in the equipment rack in the shop and one early morning they capped off a round from the 5"x38 gun. Knocked me right on the deck. I said well I'm awake now. What a shocker. I guess I just have to view these videos to watch her rust away. Thanks to all who dive and share the Mighty Os diving experience.
That’s awesome. One hell of a way to wake up. We have a group of guys diving on her on Veterans Day to replace the flags. I’ll be making another video for that as well.
Dude I swear me and you are on the same wave length. Just as I'm getting into lionfish hunting, you post an awesome video on it. As soon as I find out about the Oriskany, you post a video on it. Going out on my first lionfish hunt this weekend. Wish me luck. Love the videos bro. Keep em coming.
Thank you! Good luck on your Lionfish hunt, you will have a blast for sure!! Where are you diving for them? I’m heading out this weekend to dive the San Pablo with an archeology team from University of West Florida! It should be an awesome dive!
@ActiveDutyOutdoors I'm gonna go out with scubatech out of Destin. Not sure where exactly we're gonna be going yet but I usually see some lions when I go out with them.
Awesome! I heard scuba tech is a pretty good charter.
Same here. Lionfish hunting is at the top of my list. Unfortunately I’m deployed and missing out on all the great diving.
Man, I know the feeling. I remember watching diving videos and reading diving mags for months waiting to redeploy! Seems like forever!
The mighty O is worth the time and money it takes to become a tech diver. Hell, what's a few thousand in gear and training to be able to penetrate and explore to your hearts content areas of the old gal where you worked. Find a reputable operator then that will allow you to go into deco and do some real.diving. Before you go, stop by Amigos in Fort White for your gas refills. Far more reasonable gas fills than Pensacola dive shops. Normoxic trimix, nitrox and pure oxygen fills for all your tech diving needs.
Heck yeah. I recently finished my technical certification with Barry Shively at Below 130 Diving and have now done 2 tech dives on the O. I started a new channel for all my diving called The Deco Stop and have that dive on there. I am also a Divemaster for Shark Quest here in Gulf Breeze so I get all my fills for a really good price. 😉
For only a recreational dive, why would you use 28% instead of 32% and either get more time on the wreck or a larger safety margin?
I dive a 1.4 ppo2. 32% would limit me to 111 feet where the 28% would allow me to dive to 130.
Man that's so awesome some sick footage no doubt.
The visibility was awesome this day!
The urge to hit the flight deck must be tempting despite the depth.
It truly is! It seems like it is right there! I have heard of people “bouncing” the deck but with the limited no deco time I’d rather spend it looking at all the life!
Dove Mighty O this past July...well worth the trip.....stayed @ Pensacola Beach & made trip to Naval Aviation Museum as well....nice long weekend.....
That’s awesome. Definitely a lot to do in the area. The museum is really cool. Did you make it to the lighthouse?
No, multiple PM dives limited my sightseeing, but heard lighthouse is nice...
I haven’t been yet either. I heard it is a cool thing to see. Might go in a couple weeks.
Awesome video. I must get to Pensacola to dive this beauty.
It is a bucket list dive for sure!!
Awesome video buddy!
Thank you! I am hoping these videos will make it through to fisherman to show them the structures that are holding fish with grid coords and all.
@@ActiveDutyOutdoors we actually fished it two days ago and did pretty good
@@crhooked that’s awesome! I know there are a lot of fish down there and a lot of cudas waiting on the surface to steal it!
Very nice video. I’m working on my deep dive and wreck certs now. Looking forward to seeing this ship in person in the spring.
That’s awesome!! You won’t regret it! It is an amazing dive. Not much time down there, I think I had about 8 minutes of no deco time when I down.
Double tanks setup is the best way to go. Learn to deal with deco.
@@jimmymikecallahan8488 Deco / adv Nitrox training starts in a couple weeks. :)
Pretty cool dive
Yeah, it was awesome. Pretty deep so we couldn’t stay down long.
Great video bro!
Thank you!
Awesome video.
Good decision not to go any further. No point.
Thanks! It was an awesome dive.
Yeah, way too tight.
my dad served on her thanks for the video
That’s awesome! I’ll be working on my tec certification so I can explore the rest of it.
