- Welcome back to The Deco Stop! I am so happy you have found my channel and even more excited if you are a returning subscriber! This channel is all about SCUBA diving from Beginner all the way through Technical diving where I will explore awesome dive sites around Florida and the WORLD! Hopefully, with some of you soon as I plan local and abroad group trips. Hope you're ready for an epic video, on this episode I am finishing my TDI Technical Diving certification, also known as Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures with my buddy Chris through Below 130 Diving (link below). Barry Shively is our instructor and one of the best when it comes to decompression diving. This last and final dive in on the USS Oriskany, an Essex class Naval Aircraft Carrier that was purposely sunk in the Gulf of Mexico outside the Pensacola Pass to become the largest artificial reef off of the United States Coast Line. Come along and we will take you down to 150 feet to see what is lurking at those depths.

Best video of The O on youtube, great dive!
Wow! Thank you!!
I would love to see more of your technical dive training journey this was an excellent video
Thank you. Just did another tech dive on the Oriskany yesterday. Putting the footage together now.
Great video. Love the commentary on top of the video. I got my TDI Advanced Trimix Diver certification in 1998 - have fun on your continuing diving education and hope you get in to the world of mixed gases and technical diving. I trained, certified and dove in the Pacific Northwest. Waters in the 40's, "good" visibility was anything over 20' - all in full drysuits, 100lb. wings, stainless backplates with home-made harnesses. Twin LP steel 120's (beasts), dual cross over manifolds, and ScubaPro regulators with a 10' main hose. We were in constant touch with the FL cave divers and the DIY guys in getting this all figured out. They all thought we were nuts for cold water diving. PS. I SO would have used the ascent reel and lift back to float up that anchor at 10:16....besides, your buddy should have a line and float for you to use (as you found out). And yes, I've done exactly what you've done - launched my ascent bag and reel and watched it go away only to have to scrum over to my buddy and politely ask if I can borrow his ascent line for the multi-hour deco.
Thank you! And thank you for blazing the trail into what technical diving is today. I have been doing a lot of reading and the doing these deep dives in the 90’s must have been intense! I was so thinking of floating that anchor up but figured my instructor would not be too happy, lol. As for the Pacific NW, that’s where I grew up. Oregon specifically, I should go back up there and do some dives around there.
Very cool video. You showed viewers a nice view of the wreck.
Thank you! I’ll be out there on the 3rd doing another deep dive, hopefully will get some more footage of the other parts of the O.
The blinking beacon is genius on the lead diver. Awesome to watch, poised, calm professional. You got a good crew
Thank you! I agree, the beacon is an excellent idea. I am working on my instructor certification now and plan on getting the same beacon. I believe it’s made by BAF Lights.
Loving the commentary! Youve got an excellent balance of being entertaining and educational!
I’m planning on starting my tech journey in the next few months so I’d really appreciate any and all vids you may want to through out on the subject matter .. even if it’s not shot in the water.
Thanks again for the upload!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Tech training is amazing, so much information and the diving planning is kind of fun!
I congratulate you on your diving in the Oriskany, only with technical diving can you enjoy that dive. I visited it in 2017 and was able to do 12 dives there and I was even more eager to visit it again, thanks to your video all my memories of those dives came back.
That’s awesome and thank you for watching it!! You are so correct, diving it as a tech diver is the only way to dive the Oriskany. I dove it last year recreationally and the whole time I wished I was tech certified, that was probably the dive that convinced me to get my AN/DP certification.
Congratulations on your new certification. Impressive!
Thank you!!
Very cool video. Thanks for sharing your journey and also being open about it. It would have been easy to cut out the runaway SMB, but I've had that happen during my technical training also, and it was refreshing to see a diver being honest about those issues that happen and a good lesson in not taking the risk of ascending (or in some cases, descending) to chase equipment. Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you! Thats exactly why I wanted to leave it in there. There are so many videos where everything perfect, I thought it would be a good idea to leave the mistakes in there so I can learn from people’s comments and give people a chance to see that problems to come up.
@@TheDeco_Stop - Agreed. Wish everyone had that same philosophy. We'd all benefit from the learning.
This channel has very good potential. The narration is so good and relaxing. Keep up the stuff! I have thalassophobia and keep watching those contents made me more aware and less scared of those wrecks. Maybe one day who knows i will do this first hand!😂
Thank you!! It can be a bit intimidating but it is very relaxing underwater.
Awesome. Congratulations on getting certified. The Big"O" is definitely one of the bucket list dives I want to do.
Thank you!! It was an awesome experience. The O is such a cool wreck to dive, probably will take years to see the whole ship.
Appreciate the full videos, nice to see other follow tec divers in detail. A lot of potential as others say, keep it up. Jealous of your wrecks! From Aus
Thank you!! And for the record I am jealous of your reefs!
Love this video bro been tryna find something like this for ages. I'll definalty keep watching all the tec diving videos you make
Heck yeah! I appreciate it and plan on making a lot of videos on tec diving.
@@TheDeco_Stop I like seeing all the planning and the parts about it that make technical 🤘
Great Job on your well earned certification
Thank you! I am excited to start exploring a bit more now.
Congrats!!! I wish I get to reach that point too and become a certified tech diver.
Thank you! You should work towards it for sure, the learning is the funnest part.
New subscriber here. Great stuff dude. Looking fwd to more.
Heck yeah! I appreciate it. More will be posted soon!
Awesome diving man, regards from Scotland 🏴
Thank you!!
Technically Speaking by Simon Pridmore is a great read or listen. Its a series of talks that lays out the foundational history of technical diving.
Awesome, thank you. I am going to add it to my list.
Great video. AN/DP is on my list for next year (hopefully). Took intro last fall and have been diving doubles as much as possible to build comfort in the water.
Awesome! Thats the best thing you can do until your class. Being comfortable in doubles before hand makes the class so much more enjoyable. If you like reading, Deco for Divers is an excellent book to read before hand too.
Really enjoyed these vids! Great to see your tech training. It’s on my bucket list. I’m a sidemount diver and have completed full cave, but yet to do my AN/DP since Mexican caves are shallow enough to do full cave without it. My little sis, lives there in Pensacola and would love to do next step training there. I would really enjoy seeing some of your continued tech dives and experiences. Perhaps a little summary of what you learn from each dive… the debriefing post dives is my favorite part. Always so much to learn and discuss!
Oh, the Mexican caves would be so awesome to dive! My next step in cavern then cave. I plan on making a lot of technical diving videos and debrief at the end is a great idea!
Been diving 30 years and am from that area but NOPE on the tech diving and nope on overheads. Have a blast
I didn’t think I would ever get tech certified but I am usually associated with extremes, really doesn’t make my wife happy.
Awesome video.
When you get normoxic, check out the screws, so many lionfish sitting down there.
Didn’t see hardly any on the inside.
Now you got me thinking of my next course! Just might have to sign up for a normoxic trimix course. I would love to get to the sand on the Oriskany!
man id love to do something like this. Imagine seeing this in person 😵
It is an awesome sight to see for sure!
Looks like a great dive. I'm just starting to get into scuba. Going to take my open water in a few months, but my end goal is tek diving and cave diving.
Awesome! You’re going to love it. It changed my life.
My next step is probably full trimix now that I’m full cave, deco, advanced nitrox to 150 for TDI and advanced wreck SSI. Can’t wait to hit this wreck!!!!
That’s awesome. Cavern and cave are my next. You’ll love the O when you get down to it.
Hope you have as much fun as I did getting cave!
@epic_SCUBA I’m sure I will. It’s nice being this close to cave country.
Congratulations on your certification. I'm retired Navy, and Oriskany was my first ship and made the last cruise on it and was part of the decommissioning crew. I got certified to celebrate my 55th birthday. I was present for the sinking. I want to get my tech certification so i can visit my work spaces on the O2 level and also berthing space and CIC
That is awesome!! It would be amazing for you to get down there to see it. Such an incredible ship and an incredible dive.
It was interesting to look at your tapes with stop times and depths. I was taught a different way of doing it. I’m going to stick to how I was trained, obviously, but it’s interesting to see how other people are taught. I had Mel Clark do my training to 230’ and I hope to dive the Mighty O’ someday. See if I can spin that prop.
That would be awesome to make it down there…one day for sure. I agree, lots of ways to do things I am always interested in seeing how others do it.
Badass man! I’ve caught a ton of fish there before. But didn’t see alot in the video. Was there more that we just didn’t see??
Man it was a weird day, we didn’t see a lot of fish or even a single shark. We normally always see sharks on it.
My best dive buddy died on that wreck. Thomas Lee Shortt Jr
Sorry to hear that. It’s never easy losing a friend. I’m not ready to go yet but I think if I had a choice, that would be the way.
@@TheDeco_Stop Thanks man, I wasn't with him when he got in trouble, I've always wanted to go dive the place where he got hurt. Your video took me there and it was tough. Beautiful dive site though, thanks for filming it, stay safe out there.
I just moved to Pensacola, and looking to dive the Oriskany. Who did you dive with? I'd love to know! Awesome video!
Awesome, welcome to Pensacola! I dive with Niuhi Dive Charters, Captain Andy is an amazing captain and his boat is perfect. I have also gone out with H2O Below, bigger boat but also more people.
I think I'm the complete opposite :D , after reading some books i want to go from open water to re-breather tech ASAP ! ,
My country isn't well known for cave diving so ill probably have to travel to Florida to get certed and then come back to break some new ground .
I like the longer videos ! but i don't know if that's everyone's cup of tea .
The longer videos are kind of hit or miss, some people like them and some won’t even click on the video if they see it’s over 10 minutes.
I have an instructor here that takes his students to the Dominican Republic for their cave certification. He said the caves are massive there and makes for a good first couple cave dives.
@@TheDeco_Stop Thanks for the tip ill look into that :)
The videos from barry sheiling you mentions are they on youtube? cant find them.
Really nice video. i took my OW certefication last weekend and am taking my AOW next weekend, but my big plans are to go for CCR tecnical diving both for the gas cost for deeper dives but the possibility if staying down longer without carrying like 6 tanks talk to me. Unfortually im not as blessed with good visibility, Here in the baltic see outside of stockholm sweden we can be happy if we see more than 4 meters during summer that is about 13 feet visibility maximum.
but nice video cant wait for my next dive
I’ll have to see where he puts his videos, might just be on his Facebook page Below 130 Diving. CCR is my next stop for the same reasons, gas is expensive!
What torch are you using?
Right now it’s the Orca Torch D710.
If you don’t mind me asking, was the price of helium very expensive ? There seems to be a shortage and it’s driving up the price .
Yes! It is crazy expensive. Thats one main driving factor on why a lot of people (including me) are getting CCR certified. It cost me $250 to do a 25/25 mix.
my dad was stationed on the oriskany when she still ran aircraft. i stood on that deck while she was underway.
That’s amazing! The Oriskany must have been something to see when she was floating.
@TheDeco_Stop she was impressive, I remember feeling small standing on the deck. My dad was an FT. Their office was under the flight deck. There was a dent in the overhead. They told us kids it was from a hard landing. How true that was, who knows.
Heck, true or not it makes for a good story. The O is so massive that it will take me quite a few dives and another certification to see it all.
Question for you why did you decide to do oc tec vs going to ccr since the price of helium is really expensive.
CCR is still on the table, but I am still learning more about them. Initial cost was the main reason, the price of the CCR plus CCR course and tec is just high. I plan on saving for CCR though.
@@TheDeco_Stop I went the ccr route for deep tec diving
@@davidb5195 that will most likely be the route I take when I go further.
@@TheDeco_Stop next time I am Florida let’s go have some diving fun
@@davidb5195 heck yeah! I’m all for it.
Great content my guy, question though. How are you filming hands free?
My mask has a mount on it. It’s an XS Foto mask, I love it, makes filming really simple.

@@TheDeco_Stop thanks for the info
Whats your sac?
On average it is .7 ft3/min, but gets a lot higher if I am spearing Lionfish. I was pretty relaxed on this dive so it was actually .67 ft3/min during the working portion and .58 ft3/min on my stops.
I want to go to the flying deck
It was pretty cool getting down that deep. There were so many jigs and lures down there that fisherman lost.
This dive is on my list for sure.
It’s an awesome dive. I dove it last year just as a recreational dive and there was more than I could see in 2 dives.
Have you considered going with a rebreather given helium prices? I can’t imagine the gas cost associated with taking a tri-mix class!!! Ouch!!! And drifting deco stops?!?!?! Work on your buoyancy control boys and girls!!! 😂
After paying for my hilitrox for this dive, the rebreather route is starting to sound like the way to go.
Ca c'est une plongée technique ???
Yes, the first certification in technical diving. Limit is 150 feet and 1 deco bottle. Next will be Trimix and will be a lot deeper.
@@TheDeco_Stop Ok alors je suis vraiment rassuré sur les formations que nous délivrons gratuitement en Europe....
