ICARUS immediately opened fire with her 50 calibre M.G. on her starboard quarter and 30 calibre M.G. on the flying bridge. By that time she had moved to approximately 1,000 yards distance. Men were seen climbing from the U-boat’s conning tower. ICARUS swung around as quickly as possible to bring her 3-inch gun to bear. Her first two shells straddled the U-boat, then the gunner found the target. Of fourteen shots six direct hits and one ricochet hit were scored on the hull and conning tower. Thirty-three men tumbled from the conning tower in clock-like precision, swimming rapidly away from the boat. U-352 remained on the surface five minutes. She sank at 1714" Probably, some men were struck by gunfire from Icarus and killed immediately or injured and died in the water; those men would not have "gone down with the ship" but would have been unaccounted for. Icarus recovered 34 men, 4 injured, from the water. A total of 12 remained unaccounted for. (Note: The firing of machine guns at a surfaced sub was not to attempt to sink the U-boat but to prevent members of the sub's crew from manning the deck cannon and/or the anti-aircraft cannon and use them at the US patrol boat. The firing of the 3" gun on Icarus was to damage the U-boat and sink it but this cannon fire would also have helped to protect Icarus from gunfire from the U-boat.) The reported circumstances of the U-boat's sinking indicate that it sank with the hatches open, thus allowing major water entry during the sinking. The reports states that prisoners said that one officer was killed in the control room by the concussion of a nearby depth charge; also, one prisoner who was taken aboard USCGC Icarus had a severed leg; despite first aid, he died shortly afterwards before Icarus reached shore.

Also, all the instruments and controls off the external bridge are gone. I have heard people say that they've seen flags, china plates, internal instruments and fitting (but I have no proof of this, having not seen them myself). The US Navy sent divers to disarm torpedoes and ammunition because of tales of divers tampering with them or taking parts for souvenirs. The Navy divers reported that some of the triggers on torpedoes were set to the armed position by tamperers or were within a hair's breadth of being armed. When the sub sank, men from its crew opened the hatches as a means of escape. That's why about 33 survivors and a few bodies of survivers who drowned trying to escape or died of battle injuries were recovered from the water by the Coast Guard Cutter Icarus - the boat that sank the sub. My understanding is that even though many hatches were open, there were some dry compartments and pockets in the sub when it was first located after being sunk for many (30 - 40) years. Those compartment were stripped of anything removable. (Again, I do not know this as a fact, since I did not see it but it's widely discussed in the area of Morehead City and Beaufort, NC.) AdventuresOfTheKanFam What type of certified, you have to be at least AOW to dive the U 352 because just Open Water you have a max depth of 60 ft / 20 M. This wreck sits in 115 ft / 35m of water
They SAY you need your “advanced” but to be honest bcuz the bottom (sand) is only 115 feet, so you’re fine doing it. It’s not like doing the Great Blue Hole (which has a bottom of 300 feet). If your buoyancy messes up on this one, you won’t die, is my point. But if you mess up a dive on the blue hole… you’re done lol.
This was the second U boat sank by the US in WW2 and the first German POWs captured by the US in the war. It is also a war grave. I just started diving in the last year..... about how many dives do you think someone should have before they go on this dive?
Olympus Dive requires an Advanced Diver certification to dive the U-352. Nitrox certification is strongly recommended. I had over 60 dives the first time I dove the U-352. I would suggest at least 20-30, some of which should be blue water (not quarry) dives. She lies in about 115 feet of water, so plan accordingly.
The video footage was recorded using a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. I used the GoPro Studio software to remove some of the fisheye effect when I was putting it together.
Rich Stanage hello. So the wreck is only in 30-40’ of water? I only ask as I am familiar with gopros depth specs. Thank you. This is the best wreck video I’ve ever seen.
Typically, during the summer months, the Gulf Stream moves close to our coast, south of Cape Hatteras, and brings warm, clear water with it. It’s not unusual to have 50-75’ viz and up to 80 degree temp on the sand on the offshore wrecks. Current and weather being a factor as well.
I dove the U352 in November 1988! Not long afterwords a bad storm struck over the wreck blowing sand out of the exposed stern uncovering one of the 10 crewmembers who parished when the USS icarus sank it in 1942! My understanding at the time was the remains we're returned to Germany for burial!
Your understanding is correct. All that remains that could be found, were repatriated. But the site was not excavated. The sea is its own master. It covers and uncovers things constantly. I was on the 352 just after George and his crew found it. Got blown out three times before we made the first dive. It was quite intact then, even had its deck gun. You could actually do a penetration dive but it was dicey. The depth, tank capacities and gas made for serious planning. My logs for that era are buried in storage a continent away but I'm going to say it was 1973-4.
Nitrox - yes Penetration - not that I know of. Considering that it's a maritime grave, that would be improper. Not to mention, those U-boats were pretty cramped.
A lot of folks rent 100 cu ft cylinders filled with 28% Nitrox. I use my own cylinders - 130 cu ft steel cylinders filled with 28%, with a 40 cu ft aluminum pony cylinder
Most divers are familiar with a technique called "skip breathing" where you may cut your respiration rate by 33-50%. It will extend your air a good bit but it can be very dangerous in deep dives because the carbon dioxide and nitrogen concentration in your blood will rise markedly, leaving you at greater risk for the bends or that is called hypercapnia.
Number one rule while diving: Never stop breathing. You may not be moving up or down vertically but all it takes is a large “swell” to pass overhead without your knowledge and you could have an over expansion or lung rupture.

AdventuresOfTheKanFam What type of certified, you have to be at least AOW to dive the U 352 because just Open Water you have a max depth of 60 ft / 20 M.
Es ist traurig alles in Englisch??? Warum??das
It's gonna take a lot of time in steel wool to get that seaworthy again.
Hey, who took the gun?!
what camera did you use?
The video footage was recorded using a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. I used the GoPro Studio software to remove some of the fisheye effect when I was putting it together.
Rich Stanage hello. So the wreck is only in 30-40’ of water? I only ask as I am familiar with gopros depth specs. Thank you. This is the best wreck video I’ve ever seen.
At least these sailors are on their eternal patrol
how are they identified by number??
I am interested in putting this video on display in my store. I was wondering if i could possibly get your consent before hand
Absolutely!
Thank You!
That vis is incredible! Is this usual conditions?
Conditions vary based on weather and currents; I've been fortunate on the times I've been out to the U-352.
Great.
Not USS Icarus but USCGC Icarus. She was a Coast Guard Cutter.
Onore a questi marinai
Beautiful vid. You had a great dive with good viz and little rip. Two questions: does anyone do penetrations, and were you using nitrox?
Nitrox - yes
Penetration - not that I know of. Considering that it's a maritime grave, that would be improper. Not to mention, those U-boats were pretty cramped.
What was that... no narration, nothing to tell what it is ?
U-352, vor der US-Küste von einem Kutter der Küstenwache schwer beschädigt und von der Crew selbst versenkt.....;
It is a WARGRAVE
Nice video... didnt you feel something when you were in front of these acuatic grave?
Always, when I'm diving the U-352.
What did you feel at U-352 oOOH and any strange dreams when sleeping?
how much is a charter and who runs it
Adam Womble call the Olympus Dive shop in Morehead City NC! They do it all the time! They have items from U352 in the shop, very cool to see!
How deep?
114 feet to the sand
Conditions look perfect. What size, type tanks were used ? thnx
A lot of folks rent 100 cu ft cylinders filled with 28% Nitrox. I use my own cylinders - 130 cu ft steel cylinders filled with 28%, with a 40 cu ft aluminum pony cylinder
thanx. great video
open the hatch on the tower
This look like sunked by crew for some reason
splendide
The music makes me think of the 1940's German war machine lol
Could they raise this sub ?
Craig E why?
@@harrisoncurrey1578 to put in a Museum they've done that with other subs
Craig E eh it’s a wartime wreck I’d say let it rest
@@harrisoncurrey1578 you may be right
I think it would fall apart if they tried to raise it
Can you actually hold your breathe when diving? Nice video. Google Earth brought me here. Any strange dreams when sleeping?
Most divers are familiar with a technique called "skip breathing" where you may cut your respiration rate by 33-50%. It will extend your air a good bit but it can be very dangerous in deep dives because the carbon dioxide and nitrogen concentration in your blood will rise markedly, leaving you at greater risk for the bends or that is called hypercapnia.
Number one rule while diving: Never stop breathing. You may not be moving up or down vertically but all it takes is a large “swell” to pass overhead without your knowledge and you could have an over expansion or lung rupture.
Praise the lord they got out before they scuttled their u boat
it's a graveyard.
Dude, give me titanic not some 10 ft down tourist attraction shh...
Why? You can't dive there aquaman.
They won't respond,beneath some people
who ever came up with those stupid flippers has caused very worn out legs
oof that submechanophobia lmao
Доломали уже, ничего не осталось! Всё что можно было снять уже сняли! Уроды!
Ear rape
The music sucks. there is no music U/W.
But apparently stupidity from the peanut gallery...
dreadful music no need
