Abe Cunningham is quite possibly the most underrated drummer in hard rock.
In 1994, I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with, unbeknownst to me, The Deftones, at club DNA, San Francisco. It was heavily attended by A&R from about 30 record labels. These guys came out with a hard hitting, 'punishing' sound that was fresh and aggressive. And as they finished their set, it was my band's turn: The Sun, who was represented by Guns N' Roses' management unofficially. Stephen Carpenter was so gracious to let me use his MIDI changer pedalboard, as mine just decided to fail on me. If I'd only known how great these guys were to become, at the time...

See i've never had to let a Deftones album "grow" on me. It's usually love at first sight(listen). But every time I listen this album it gets worse. But thats just my opinion. Their still my favorite band though.

I feel like Chino and Sergio are really tight right now and wrote most of this album together. Stef and Abe are kinda on the outside and having some trouble with it but they're seeing the good side. Frank is just pulling out his art and making everything gel awesome since White Pony
Chino is a true artist and his band mates are just as passionate. I'm seriously hooked on the new record.
I find myself enjoying this album more than Koi No Yokan even though I praise that album.
i read in an interview that the "specific song" stephen had the most difficulty with was actually "hearts/wires" which is actually one of the highlights so i was surprised
That’s crazy cuz hearts/wires I always thought was the best song on the record. Has a “sextape” feel to it, I’m very surprised he wasn’t feeling that song

Stephan is awesome. I met him one time. Now that I think about it what he told me is now my primary philosophy of life. He said "Where you are in life is exactly where you want to be. You've done everything in your life to get here"

The music that Chino makes outside of the Deftones is not that interesting

Why do I get the vibe that Abe and Steph completely hate this record and everything about it. Steph made it very clear he was not a huge fan and almost didn't play on it...but Abe seems pretty standoff-ish about it too.
+The Rider Like he said he had a problem with one song. The same type of tension has always been there especially before White pony came out.Which became their staple record. And it's those opposing energy's that make this band what it is. Gore is undoubtedly more of a chino record but let it grow on you. The more you listen to it the more you'll like it.

+Ed Rixon I'm totally guessing here, but Phantom Bride has Jerry Cantrell on it and a lot of guitar solos. Steph no like guitar solos. He probably doesn't feel it's a Deftones song. I love Steph to death, but I bet he is that grouchy co-worker that always hates your ideas.
I think it was Hearts/Wires. But i'm not completely sure. That's actually my favorite song on the record though but i could see why it could alienate steph a bit.

the albums ok I just wish there was more diversity between heavy and calm this album is very happy I wish every song had a swerve city breakdown in it somewhere the album isn't that heavy
They're older and wealthier. They don't have much to be angry about anymore. A lot of artists that start off with heavy music end up losing that sound once they become popular and comfortable in their lives.
My take into the "tension" side of things is that Step was into Extreme Metal to much by now. It seems that kinda grow tired of his Shoegaze and Space roots, and for him leads towards this creative blockage in-between the band that he's referring to. Maybe is time for him to initiate a side proyect where he can explore and deal with all will those Extreme, Djent and Death elements that he loves so much. Idk that's my opinion, obviously I want him to stay true to Deftones for many years to come but there's options.

I kinda sense most of the band just recognizes this as the way to make their money so they put up with the fact that it doesn't really fit their tastes all that much anymore. Someone should probably be kicked out of the band. Who it should be is an extremely difficult decision to make, which is why it hasn't been done. I honestly don't care who it is. Whether it's Abe or Steph. Because they both bring something that I like. I like BOTH the bands' heavy side and their light side. But just imagine how interesting a REALLY heavy Deftones album would be. With double bass drums and hard-hitting Meshuggah guitar. OR, imagine how cool a chill headphone-oriented Slowdive/Portishead type of Deftones album would be where Frank, Sergio and Abe really shine through in a blissful way. I'm ready for Deftones to explore something beyond what they've been doing these past few albums. I like what they've been doing, but I'm not blown away by what they've been doing. There are too many limitations to their music, and there's too much of a formula to their songwriting. They're too creative and interesting to be settling like this.
+Stars Die I like when a band has an identity. Especially when there are so many bands out there and so many genres it's good to have something and be good at it. Linkin Park is a good example of band that's techno one album and avenged sevenfold the next
