I'm only half way through the video and I'm sure you probably address this at the end, but I have been seeing a lot of vehicles set misfire codes for both torque converter shutters as well as wheel imbalance issues and severe brake pulsations. It has to do with the vibration transferred to the crankshaft that the crankshaft position sensor picks up as a misfire. Also, that shutter fix is AMAZING! haha I have used it a handful of times and it always seems to work.

I think the misfire is due to the tcc lockup shudder causing a quick slowdown in the engine speed. That’s causing the crank sensor to pick up the slow rev and cause a false misfire. Great video Paul. Watching this makes me want to make more videos.

TCC slippage is a calculated value where the TCU will subtract engine speed from input shaft speed. (as an FYI). That value should decay to zero smoothly as the clutch engages. For me, the slippage value is the give away as the data on this vehicle was erratic.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You would think the TCC slippage should eventually drop to zero, but actually some vehicles have PWM control of the TCC solenoid and can partially lock the clutch under some conditions and allow for some continued slippage instead of a complete lockup. From the research I did, this is mostly done for NVH reasons since people don't want to feel the clutch lock up and a small amount of slippage absorbs some engine vibration. Seems ridiculous to let the clutch slip constantly, but some vehicles have used that strategy since the 90's.

From several years of experience don’t have the transmission fluid flushed. Just find the drain and drain it if the filter is serviceable change it. Then add correct tranny fluid to fill it back up this will bring back some of the viscosity. Once you’ve driven it for 500 miles you’re satisfied with the color of the transmission fluid then add shutter fix I have also had good luck with Lucas transmission fix. I use Lucas transmission fix all my trucks that I work with even before there’s a problem. I have had very good luck with this.

Dr shudder fix, I’ve actually used it. Used it in an 08 Subaru Tribeca that a buddy had a quick change oil place service the trans and they put the wrong auto transmission oil in it. Subaru is apparently very specific about using their trans oil. I put about a case of Subaru trans oil though it, changing the trans oil about four times after short road tests and then added the anti shutter to the last changed. Fixed it for about a year until the tranny went out completely. The stuff is like posi rear end additive, allows it to slip instead of grabbing and slipping.
You get out here in California we’re labor rates are approaching $200 an hour and it become cost effective sometimes to throw parts at a problem.

Wow what a trip. I've been working on an almost identical issue myself. My 98 Accord has been doing the same thing, just not quite that rough yet. I am using a JDM automatic B7XA, which is pretty much just like the original trans, I just had to change the speed sensors out on it. It only had 25k kilometers when I got it. I've put about 12k miles on the transmission, and the F23a1 is freshly rebuilt. When my torque converter locks up though, especially if your trying to drive easy, every time you let off and reapply a tiny bit of throttle there is always this jerkiness.

We have an Endeavor, Just from my personal experiences - when it sits to long & the batter voltage drops I will get Misfire Codes, so I clear the Misfire Code & just charge the Battery before start it up, they never reappear again. He stated the. Voltage had dropped to 9.0 volts before he started is, so the batter is weak & will cause a misfire on start up.
    - On the Transmission, had the same scudder issues, and if the Fluid is Redish Brown to Brown it needs to be flushed & changed out, especially with front wheel drive cars the Transmission fluid needs to be changed around 50-65k depending on the model. I’ve switch ours out to Valvoline Synthetic MaxLife ATF, which is certified to work for Mitsubishi ATF S-III types, and other. Works great now.

This triggered PTSD. I bought a cheap low km mitsubishi lancer wagon as a run around when I was a young mechanic. Test drove great. Once I bought it and drove it on the freeway, felt like the entire driveline would shake out of the car.
My first comment was, "it feels like the torque lock up going on, off, on, off.
I was a parts changer at that age and trusted the more senior tech's that helped. Checked for misfires and engine running until the cows came home, full transmission service and flush, engine mounts, wheels and tyres swapped and balanced, driveshafts swapped, wheel alignment etc etc. Significantly better, but not fixed. Took it to a trans shop. He drove it and instantly said, "your TCC is toast". 😭

BUS off codes and CAN timeout in Mitsubishi are because all the modules are programmed to top model spec by default, the modules that are not fitted to lower spec vehicles result in the BUS off and CAN timeout occuring as they cannot be found in the network.

I just had this issue myself on a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander (4J12 engine), was throwing a P0304 caused by lockup clutch shudder, had over 400 misfire counts on cyl 4 and a very small number of counts (< 30) on the other cylinders. The lockup clutch solenoid is controlled via pulse width and operates above approx 15kmph. Had to de-pin the solenoid control wire at the ecu to confirm. What I found interesting was the misfire counter constantly picking on cyl 4 when in reality any of the cylinders could have thrown a misfire code. I think the ecu was getting confused and defaulting to cyl 4.

To verify a TCC problem you can use a NVH tool. There is a handy app for your phone (must have the appropriate sensor on the phone) that uses the sensors in your phone to test, it does cost $99 but that is cheaper than the $399 they were charging a couple years ago. It is way cheaper than a pico scope for NVH. It requires some interpretation but I have found it helpful.

I have bought all the parts to rebuild and upgrade the transmission and torque converter and will pull it in December. I bought the car a couple month ago with the OD light on and shift solenoid codes. It needed the transmission harness since it was shorted out to make it driveable. I guess the mechanic in a bottle let me down. :-) It's a West Coast car with zero rust and only 110,000 miles and it's worth a $1000.00 in parts to me to build the transmission.

Fluid exchange with Mercon v and the shutter fix took care of alot of the ones I worked on back in the day. Cant remember if the 2001 had a torque converter drain plug, I think no. Maybe 2000 was the last year that had that.

I relpaced the filter and pan fluid is all....thank you for any advice I sure appreciate it....

(I will explain the old adage of service the Transmission or not) Back in the 50s 60s 70s 80s. Transmissions ran really hot causing the ATF to varnish. Varnish has a yellow tint to it which I have not seen in 20 years partly because of the type of oil used today and the fact transmissions don't run as hot as they used to. When you serviced a Transmission with varnished ATF the new ATF would cut the varnish loose sticking the valves. The Transmission would not stick the shift valves or the pressure regulator valves because these valves have strong return springs
and the valves have really sharp lands witch would cut the varnish in half. On the other hand the governor valves had very light or no return springs so the varnish would stick theses valves with no problem. The Transmission really wasn't hurt but it would start off in 2nd or 3rd gear because the primary or secondary valve would not return to there home position which is 1st gear.
The governor was controlled by the output shaft speed and centrifugal force. At about 15 mph the heavy primary valve would stroke causing a 1-2 shift at about 30 mph the secondary light valve would stroke causing a 2-3 shift. When the vehicle came to a stop if the primary or secondary valve did not return to there home position you had a wrong gear start on take off. Interesting thing is if you had a pressure gauge on the governor pressure port you would see O psi with the vehicle running at a stand still. As the vehicle started moving you would see the pressure rise 1 psi per mile per hour. 50 mph = 50 psi and so on. When the governor valve or valves stuck you would see some kind of pressure as the vehicle came to a stop causing wrong gear starts. The Transaxle in Paul and James video did not have a varnished Transaxle. The ATF was a brown in color servicing that Transaxle/Transmission with a new filter and fluid would not have hurt that unit at all. The lube Gard INSTANT SHUDDER FIX would
work even better and longer if the unit would have been serviced and flushed. Paul's Transmission & Repair 40+ years building Transmissions of all types. (Great video and info you guys) Also that Transaxle has no mechanical governor it was replaced by the speed sensor.

I’ve had Lucas transmission fix get some extra life out of transmissions for customers before. As long as you inform them of the problem and make them aware that they’re on borrowed time with the transmission then you’re doing right by them. Transmission rebuilds are not cheap and if you can help them with a little time to save the money to get it fixed then they are usually grateful for it. It’s also a good time to teach them about proper maintenance after they spend the money to get it rebuilt. When they have that much of an expense with no notice they tend to start taking advice about maintenance seriously when approached correctly.

Sometimes when you have transmission issues cars these days will have secondary symptoms such as misfires cause the car sometimes needs to put its self into limpmode so you don't damage the transmission. My 99 k3500 7.4 l did this on number 6 cylinder cause the siliniod plug shorted due to transmission fluid leaking through plug! It through an p1810 torque converter code then did what they call 2nd gear lockout which is an limpmode for transmission issues. Wasn't sure what you know on that as your an intelligent guy but thought I would share what I've found working on my rig incase it helps you in the future 😉

Back when i first started in 91 ford had this shudder in the Taurus and it affected almost every one of them. their fix was to create and release the shudder fix additive. The stuff works as i have used it at least a thousand times in my thirty years. While this may only be a band aid fix Ive had customers go another 30k miles before having any more symptoms. When I could I recommended repairing or replacing the trans but sometimes its not cost effective. Dr Tranny's has been around for a long time.

I don't rely too much on the color of the fluid. The color is just a dye and in no way affects the quality of the fluid. I've been noticing some fluids drastically change color after a few years and low mileage on vehicles with no transmission problems whatsoever. If the transmission shows no sign of slipping, I'd recommend a new filter and partial fluid change.
Additives aren't usually a fix, but if $50 buys you an extra year of service from the vehicle, it's well worth a shot.

Sometimes being a parts changer is the fastest way to diag the issue. Lights are a great example, I can change a headlight on a utillamaster step van in about 3 min, to check the wiring I have to pull the light anyway. Why wouldn’t I stick a new head light on it right quick, it that’s the problem I fixed it in 3 min. If it’s not the problem I had to pull the light anyway to check the wiring.
