Stumbled across your videos working on one of our vehicles and have watched a lot since then. Sometimes I find myself saying “Why doesn’t he just.....?” but then I remind myself that you’re teaching systems and processes and concepts rather than a specific procedure. I actually think some of your best videos are like this where you get to a fault taking a little round-about path because it shows more of the whole picture. Someone at home might have been inclined to chase why the fuel pump was running full time and they would have eventually gotten to powers/grounds at the computer, found the fuse, and then (hopefully) looked for the cause of the fuse burning out. It’s not direct, but it’s not necessarily wrong either.

One thing to keep in mind, unplugging a sensor assumes the short is in the sensor. This video showed us that a harness can be shorted as well. Unplugging the sensor would not have caught that. However, checking the fuses would have pointed a technician in the right direction eventually. Thank you for the awesome videos you provide us with Danner!
Instead of cutting a perfectly fine wire, why don’t you remove the pin bushing from the connector housing with the appropriate terminal removal tool and simply push the pin pushing back into the connector housing when done? I have a 2021 Chevy Malibu RS that has lost communication between the ecm and tcm and since I think your one of the best and well knowledgeable mechanics in the industry wanted to see if you can tell me the direction I should go
Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot! Unfortunately network issues are difficult as it is, and over the internet, in text form, near impossible. What is your background? Are you a tech? That will dictate our direction.
I am not pro by any means, but what I do when looking for shorts,is to substitute a light bulb in place of the fuse,so when you find the short the bulb lights so as to not waste fuses and when you move a harness you may see the light flash as the short comes and goes. The bulb needs to draw at least as much amperage as the fuses' rating. I simply soldered wires to a blown fuse and connected a headlamp to it,so just plug into fuse socket.
You can do that but not on circuits that have low resistance outputs. Your test light can easily find a path to ground through the fuel pump and O2 heater circuits and would light just as brightly as if you were connected straight to ground. So, you can use that method but you must know about this variable or you will absolutely chase your tail on some cars.
@@ScannerDanner I agree, but if you have say a 5 amp fuse and the test light .in this case a headlight bulb that draws more than 5 amps,it will not light until there is low enough resistance to draw whatever it requires. I was not speaking of a regular test light,in which case you are correct. Thanks for responding
Why you cut original second 5V reference? There is other option to troubleshoot....why not check ECM B+ feed supply first? If there is communication issue then we should check Ign and B+ ,B- feed supply.in my view try to save original harness because we have many other options to troubleshooting.
please read my other replies and lose your tunnel vision, this is an absolute must learn procedure, sure, I should have checked fuses first, but as I said in my other replies, what do you do when the fuses are good?
yep, I seen the harness wasn't behind the pump where it should have been in the older footage! it's little details like that which make or break repair work, causing future issues. the worst part is, they may have seen it and decided NOT to redo the job (to beat book time) or just sloppily put on a zip-tie which broke apart long ago. I always look over everything and often find possible future issues, but you cannot catch them all.
Good Morning ScannerDanner 🙏 🌄 have a great day and take care ScannerDanner Thanks 👍 Great tutorial thanks 👍 🙏 From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧
Mine has the infamous, "No Bus," error. The scanner thinks the key is not even on. Thus, the ECM is bad or crusty wiring is causing the error. The ASD circuit is shorted to ground. Before the shut down, an error denoting the catalytic converter located in the front part of the exhaust manifold was functioning far below perimeters. Maybe I should check out that oxygen sensor harness. The voltage gauge was going crazy right before shut down. After shutdown, the battery was hissing. I suspect a big shirt circuit, probably right where you found your large wire damage.
@@ScannerDanner I forgot to throw that information in there I pulled the distributor cap and I grab the rotor make sure it didn't have too much slack and make sure it wasn't broken and then I crank it with a distributor cap open and it did turn just fine so that was okay and this this Motors only got seventy thousand miles on it runs perfectly until just shut off like flipping a switch while idling at gas pump during a trip
Good video. Show the finished fix and start..lol how did you reroute the 02 harness. I can't tell you how many times I rerouted factory harnesses out of harm's way.
I wish I could afford to get you to come down to nc, we got a 02 duango at our shop that is having a similar issue. But in the meantime I'm gonna use your videos and tips to see if we can get it going. Love the great work
Thank you for all the vids! I am starting to get it more now.... So on the schematics, Is the Green Computer Data lines system- the 5 volt reference wires? the ones from can high and low?
I remember this one. Yes, you should have started with the fuses but your approach was better for your students. Nice fix and bad bad design from Jeep.
Not really, if you go to the end of the video where Paul shows us starting the 96 Jeep (different one) but showed us where it was supposed to have been addressed (behind the power steering pump) as it should be so the owner or someone at the time had replaced the pump, but didn't put the wire back where it should be.
Hey Paul, question: when you were checking the other leg of that 5v reference for a short, instead of cutting the wire could you have unplugged the connector since the 2 legs of the 5v ref circuit were on different connectors?
I also changed out the sending unit in the fuel tank. Put in new fuel injectors delphi sending unit.. Turn vehichle on turn it off check fuel pressure no fuel pressure at shcrade valve.
this same exact method can be used using a test light in place of the fuse as when you get the short to ground the test light will light as its provided a ground so its exactlly the same method just going off a bulb instead.my favorite method for intermittents for us cheap arses who dont have these bi directional scanners/short finders.i wanted to mention this since we all have test lights and we can use them the same way seen here.
This troubleshooting like if someone have hand finger pain but Dr start from foot finger.... If ECM is not communication then no need to waste time to check 5V and no need to unplug sensor 5V ref.First of all we have to check 12V B+ and B- power ref feed at ECM plug if it ok then check CAN.If ECM is communicate then go to 5V ref.I think this is right way to troubleshooting because wire cutter is very common tool in many local garage.
It is WAY faster to verify a 5v ref at a sensor than to check the ECM plug for power. Watch the videos referenced in this video and you will see what I a talking about. I truly felt going into this job (fuel pump running continuously and a no com, that we had a shorted reference circuit.
Yup, that's around the time I started watching, and being inspired by, you! Thanks!
9 years ago my friend! Thank you so much
Thanks for your great videos . I really enjoy learn so much from you.
Great Job Paul n Caleb!! Keepem coming!
if this where a tv show i would binge watch it
yep, I seen the harness wasn't behind the pump where it should have been in the older footage!
it's little details like that which make or break repair work, causing future issues. the worst part is, they may have seen it and decided NOT to redo the job (to beat book time) or just sloppily put on a zip-tie which broke apart long ago.
I always look over everything and often find possible future issues, but you cannot catch them all.
Good stuff as usual Professor.
Happy Motoring.
Good Morning ScannerDanner 🙏 🌄 have a great day and take care ScannerDanner
Thanks 👍 Great tutorial thanks 👍 🙏
From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧
Mine has the infamous, "No Bus," error. The scanner thinks the key is not even on. Thus, the ECM is bad or crusty wiring is causing the error. The ASD circuit is shorted to ground. Before the shut down, an error denoting the catalytic converter located in the front part of the exhaust manifold was functioning far below perimeters. Maybe I should check out that oxygen sensor harness. The voltage gauge was going crazy right before shut down. After shutdown, the battery was hissing. I suspect a big shirt circuit, probably right where you found your large wire damage.
yes the 5 volt ref is were we could get burn on that one not checking it.thank great video
That is correct and it is the one that most people miss and end of replacing a computer that never needed it.
I have watched several of your vids...this is one your best...this will work on anything awesome
Thank you! Just replied to your other question too. We need to make sure your distributor is actually turning too
@@ScannerDanner I forgot to throw that information in there I pulled the distributor cap and I grab the rotor make sure it didn't have too much slack and make sure it wasn't broken and then I crank it with a distributor cap open and it did turn just fine so that was okay and this this Motors only got seventy thousand miles on it runs perfectly until just shut off like flipping a switch while idling at gas pump during a trip
I have ohm my new crank sensor just in case..its good..im looking for burnt or pinched wires...this is a head scratcher..

Great video love the value best video on electrical short 👌 so far
Great job my brother, love the shorter video.
More to come!
Excellent information as always. Good job!
Wasn’t around for the original airing, but great vid 👍
Thanks for that great review 👍 great teaching strategies.
Good teaching Scanner Danner, and thanks for the video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great fundamental lessons,thank u mr danner👍
All that work for just ending up just looking for torn wires lol good job
Nothing was wasted as the procedures I went through were super important to know how to do. Thanks!
This was HUGELY helpful! Thanks!
Great video! I think you might have just helped me solve my problem! What make and model were you testing on?
Great video. Learned a lot and easy to understand.
Awesome diag u da man :) Ive got 2003 4.0 no juice to the Fuel pump think its the computer im told this is common
Thanks Paul another Great job and explanation
I also changed out the sending unit in the fuel tank. Put in new fuel injectors delphi sending unit.. Turn vehichle on turn it off check fuel pressure no fuel pressure at shcrade valve.
this same exact method can be used using a test light in place of the fuse as when you get the short to ground the test light will light as its provided a ground so its exactlly the same method just going off a bulb instead.my favorite method for intermittents for us cheap arses who dont have these bi directional scanners/short finders.i wanted to mention this since we all have test lights and we can use them the same way seen here.
Nuttin beat a little visual inspection sometimes!
Hi paul,I am paul what thinking about autoscope 4 engine analyzer
Good job Mr. Danner I love your job
Then with me teaching a class of 20 students while live troubleshooting, I got tunnel vision. But these procedure shown are super important to know how to do as 99% of people are lost after checking fuses. What do you do when the fuses are good? "Must be a bad engine computer"...nope, it sure isn't :-)
glad I got to watch your video learned alot I will be watching all your videos you said some thing about a book you have
Awesome, thank you! And yes, it is available on my website at www.scannerdanner.com I also have an entire training program available called ScannerDanner Premium. Check out the introduction and navigation video I have on my SD Premium tab of my website for more info on that.
Question:
Some times when I check look like this.
I found a blown fuse and there is no short in circuit.
I think just a fuse life.
Always occur when stop the engine the fuse blown.
I don't know what's the reason exactly.
What about your opinion?
What fuse ? Car model ? year ? engine would help, MORE INFO PLEASE.
no, fuses do not blow without a reason, there is always a cause. Now I have seen fuses fail but they do not "blow" out, like in this video
Love the series sir, I was wondering if you personally have a vid. on how to use a volt meter correctly ? Thanks.
Yes I have, watch this one first
th-cam.com/video/w0PpLTnKKZg/w-d-xo.html
Not the same jeep , but the video is a good one for wire diagnostic.
great series well done God bless you bro
