Agreed, that alone would reduce perceived piracy by at least half if not more. Main reason most people download pirated games is to check it before buying it. And in most cases you uninstall after 15min as the game is crap or not your cup of tea. Problem is most games esp AAA dont do demos this days.

Seriously though, don't buy the crap they're putting out and eventually they won't be able to put it out any more.

@@John_Lemon. Not quite the same. Think about how many games don't kick off until after a really slow intro that isn't representative of the game as a whole. A demo takes a chunk of the game that properly represents the game ideally without spoiling it.

Depends on how old your old days was, my old days were the only way we learned about games was through a magazine review and had no idea what the game actually looked like until you bought it.

I don't think anybody actually disliked Forespoken's Gameplay: I loved the Fantasy World and player controls, but the Dev team's idea of making a "relatable and representative" protagonist was literally plucking the most insufferable ghetto Black teen and placing her in a Magical World, just being rude and antagonistic there.
Everybody with good sensibility hated her.
Now with Flintlock, we have the opposite: a woman of (Afro/New Zealand Aboriginal) origin who is native to this Fantasy world, she is a disciplined and competent Soldier without being a Mary Sue; she has relatable flaws and conflicts that match the stakes of the story; and despite the AntiWoke chuds crying wolf about the heroine Nor Vanek seeming unfeminine, I actually like a handsome lady who isn't dainty, considering her line of work as a Soldier in the Trenches.
I collect Souls Clones with unique Styles and Gimmicks, so this is already a Day One Purchase for me.

This reminds me so much of Banishers Ghost of New Eden, but maybe that's just because lately most games developed with Unreal Engine look extremely similar, but this one also has almost the same UI too.
They do look similar, enotria look similar as well if not for the art design coming from another culture and period entirely.
You're spot on. Having bought Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden and then playing this demo, I can say that Flintlock is everything I thought Banishers was going to be. I could only make it 5-6 hours into Banishers before I uninstalled, but loved almost everything about the Flintlock demo.
i have the same opinion. like my perception towards recent Korean or Nexon titles, that were Third person shooters and they share the same eye candy visuals (influenced by the MMO Asian market) using Unreal like First Decendant, Freefire, Once Human, The SYNCED, ..tho kinda win-win to be this visually good for a free to play game and that isnt demanding.
Besides the engine the time periods are closer by, the time span of early firearms but already beyond medieval... sure flintlock is fantasy, theres egyptian themes on the big god-temple and the military uniform is inspired in a later period, but still have a bit of the same aesthetic flair that smells like powder as you load single bullets
I had zero expectation going into the demo and was blown away how much fun I was having. All these little mechanics from different games come together so nicely. Plus I really love the character design and outfits. How is this game only $40!?

Yeah, I was expecting it to be $60-70, but $40 is quite a pleasant surprise so I'll probably pick it up for that reason alone lol
$40 seems like a good price for AA games, but yeah with AAA games now usually costing $70 it's still a pleasant surprise.

My limit in this genre is something like Nier Automata, below that it's just a third person action adventure
@@giampaolomannucci8281 Totally agree! A lot of RPGs get a little action-heavy for me. But Nier Automata was such a mish-mash of everything, and so good, it was hard to mind too much. But turn-based games turning into devil may cry, and action games suddenly being called "RPGs," I ain't on board. :P
I get more Fallen Order/Jedi Survivor than I do GOW. It’s still something I will check out

That painted intro around 1:20 is very reminiscent of Enderal: Forgotten Stories (total conversion mod for Skyrim).
This demo was a lot of fun and certainly built my confidence in the ''double AA'' and indie movement. Though it has some issues with feedback such as blocking and certain inputs.
@Mort: Do you always play keyboard&mouse? I often look to reviewers to decide, and don't know if it's cause you like it better or cause you always do ^^

Always KBM yeah, but I use a razer naga which is a mouse with 12 extra buttons and a custom keypad.
Had a quick run of the demo. Had fun, will likely pick it up for the price.
If almost every game came out with a demo, we’d save so much money! Sometimes simply reading about a game or even watching footage is just not enough.

Used to have a subscription to PC Gamer magazine back when they shipped a CD with it that had free utility software, hardware drivers and demos on it. Loved it.
No stamina bar? Say no more, I'm in. So sick of every action RPG having a stamina bar these days, like no protagonist does cardio anymore, huffing and puffing after a few seconds of swinging an axe.

I feel the same. I played this demo, only one mini boss what i just cant get over, its some sexret boss as i saw. The game/figthing mechanic really interesting and a nice mix. Because finally yea i do not micromanaging my stamina bar, but much more i need to focus on my abilities, how i use them, doing comboes, check if i have enough black powder to shot with the pistol, i like the long range gun reloading, it needs skills to use these weapons. The fight really has a nice dynamic and rhytm.
Oh and one more thing, i do not know or remember, if i saw in similar games, that the enemy has lets say a two/one hand weapon, what u can use on or two hand, and there is a shield on his back, and when he is starting to loose hp, it gets the shield from his back and starting using the weapon with one hand! I just loved this touch.
It’s only $40 which is a decent price, looks fun so I might pick it up

Just finished the demo, had a blast. I really loved their previous game Ashen. Another souls like with it's own takes. Been looking forward to this for a while and am happy to see how it's turning out
Get the feeling this game will get pretty dull halfway through but it's a solid effort from the devs. Sort of like that Immortals of Avum, I mean the game looked decent enough but something was missing that didn't keep it engaging. Time will tell.
This one hadn't really interested me before, since I thought it was a true soulslike (a genre that is not for me), but this video piques my interest a bit more. Thanks as always for your thoughts and the high quality video.

Thanks for the video. I might be in the minority here, but I like the way smaller studios find ways to tell their storis. Usually they don't have the budget for fully animated cut scenes, so they'll turn and image into a cinematic. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
This actually looks better realized as a playable experience than similar games currently populating the market.

I love look of the world and the flintlock fantasy setting, but the actual gameplay felt pretty middle-of-the-road. Not bad but not great either. I really wanted this team to hit it out of the park after Ashen, but this feels more like a base hit. Not sure if I will pick it up on release, but I do like seeing a game launching at only $40. Get that $70 out of here.
I liked Ashen, it showed that the people at a44 know what they're doing. Tried the demo of Flintlock yesterday. Not bad! I liked how Enki is involved in the combat, and I especially appreciated how the game portrays armor: it actually protects the wearer and you have to remove it to deal damage. Wow, sounds like actual armor!
When it comes to story and characters, Enki is so cute and has so much potential! He's probably using you for deicide, to gain a shot at the resulting power-vacuum. Which could be even more interesting, if he had a change of heart about that at some point. This is good writing, it made me think about this stuff!
Overall though, I have mixed feelings about the demo. Some mechanics were good, but other times, it reminded me of the blandness of modern AC games, especially with the settlement liberation.
Also, hearing the rumors about the former executives at a44, and how their terrible work delayed the launch so much... If those rumors were true, the folks at a44 have surely learnt their lesson, and it's a miracle, anything came out of this game at all. But seeing how the main character is written, they couldn't fix everything after all. Yeah, I think I'll pass, at least for now.
So many cool demos in next fest, had a lot of fun playing flintlock it feels different enough to be fun and not feel like just another souls-like. Wizards of Legend 2, Alters, Die in the Dungeon and Tactical Breach Wizards are a couple others I really enjoyed for one reason for another.
I've been telling people its more Souls May Cry than Soulslike.

Thanks the video, i dont know about the demo, its a huge surprise. It would be my evening program.
The demo is nice, but a bit rough around the edges. I hope they make the human enemies stand out more by not giving them the same faces and adding voice lines. I also wish I could travel on top of roofs and swim in the water (or, at the very least, not be automatically teleported out when I hit the water)
Bring back the old demo disc that companies use to send out with their other games or just as random promotions with other products.

Did you experience any stuttering or crashes? I crashed during a rift-jump because I dared to look around lol. That's not going to dissuade me from getting it; though: I think Flintlock looks awesome, and I don't have much going on in July either except Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Hopefully the crash won't happen again, once I get my hands on the real thing.

played the demo and id say it takes inspiration from several games, which you can recognise provided youve played plenty of games previously. I think you can tell the devs are full on gamers is what im saying.

I was sold on the premise of what this game could be when I first saw information about it online. I added it to my wish list and will make my final decision once it releases in July. In part, I' am okay with demos but often choose not to play them. Why, because sometimes, the developers us demos as a way to close gaps and either improve or fix the game before release. What I do appreciate more, are reviewers like Mortismal who provide well balanced reviews.
Are they always objective, hey, we're all human you know! I believe Mortismal strives hard to strike a balance even when there is a bias preference for specific types of game play. The value of watching these reveals, previews, and demonstrations provide me with an opportunity to observe and evaluate for myself without committing an enormous amount of time since I stay busy with lots of activities these days. Impressed by what I've seen here, I believe this game Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has the potential of becoming one of the more important game releases for this year. We'll have to see, what other types of information come out between now and release.
I would like to suggest that the developers take the example of games like Dragon Age 4, and reveal what they can before release about the game's systems, story, lore, mechanics for combat, skills, character creation, magic, and how much control or agency we as the primary protagonist have as we move our way through the world that is Flintlock.

Enki a lesser god? Did they just choose the name at random? In Sumer and Babylon he wasnt a minor deity (ok,in Babylon he was the grandson of the main deity but that said main deity wanted rest and gave all his power to Enki and then he became the new main deity)
Very possible that he just starts off as a lesser god but by the time the game is ending he becomes more and more powerful solidifying his power and becomer a grander one. (Especially as you guys kill all the other gods apparently lol). Also possible he was somehow stripped of his former power considering he seems to be doing this for revenge.

Both are dark.
Not that much tbh. It’s more of a traditional action rpg with block-parry-dodge mechanics and save points like you’d see from dark souls.

I totally hate the grenade jump in this game. It's just a completely unnecessary device. Why not just give her super human acrobatic abilities powered by her pet.
That is completely what it is. He enchants the powder to allow her to do that.

I have played the demo this morning. And I had a lot of fun with it.
Im hoping this game does well as Ashen was a pretty good game that I just happened to find on gamepass randomly around it's time of release.
The abundance of UI elements and overly flashy effects turned me off after trying the demo, but I can see how this game can appeal to many people. It's good, just not for me.

Noticed a lot of people taking the game at face value as an "action souls lite" and hating on it which frankly, I don't understand. I played the demo for 2.5 hours and loved every second of it especially because of how well the movement mixed with the combat
It’s good. What they clearly mean by souls-lite is you block-parry-dodge like in a souls game but otherwise it’s a hack n slash action rpg that gives you some cool powers. Kinda like Fallen Order. Had fun with the demo personally.

So, making slightly extra effort to view this particular vid from a "maybe it's not, maybe that's just for marketing" perspective.
Thing is, can't do that for everything, ain't no one got time for that.

@@glowerworm Not a tragedy but fact of life. Souls likes focus on wrong things for people that want proper rpg. There are some exceptions like Elden Ring, but for the most part soulslikes are more like arcade games than rpgs.

I just want to point out all the comments saying this is a souls like. It's a souls "LITE". It has a lot less of the souls element in it. It says it on the store page.
As for myself I'll probably just wait and see. The story setting kind of doesn't pique my interest.

This days hearing soulslike is like hearing slice of life for anime. I get an allergic reaction and stay as far away as I can. Soulslikes are all about being a dodge/roll monkey and frustrate you to no end. It saddens me that this genre is taking away attention from proper rpgs
They are proper RPGs. Go play the terrible final fantasy games if you don't like soulslikes.

This isn't very objective. You should rephrase this into your opinion. For example my opinion is that you are demonstrably incorrect and ill informed.
Games like Far Cry, Assassins Creed, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout 4 are why you can’t get proper RPGs… it’s lowest common denominator open-world action adventures with lite RPG mechanics, not Soulslikes.
Edit: to be honest, I can name maybe 5 “real RPGs” that have dropped in 15 years, besides indie/AA isometric games. Speaking first person and third person action RPGs with deep mechanics.
