    As a Hardcore fan of Chevrolet, I expected this, I love both cars, Camaro is just more my style, but I look at it like this: The Stangs have HP, no doubting that, but Camaros are much better on the track

      @cowboytk 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      not exactly. the boss 302 outruns the ss 1le and just comes in behind the zl1 the gt500 beats the zl1 on the ring and is just behind the z28 (purpose built track car)

      Dallon Olive in the competitive class is does. ford sadly does not have an answer to the corvette. the camaro however it answers quite well.

    With good headphones this sounds amazing. I now understand the camaro's dual stage exhaust system. Once you get past a certain point in the rpms it sounds like a crazy boost of power and all hell is breaking loose. It's kinda like getting a surprise or reward every time you floor it.

    i love the people saying that the other car sucks. Both of them freaking rock. I have a 78 camaro so I'm kinda a camaro guy. But i totally respect the Shelby considering that Mr. Shelby him self was there to work on the car. So both of those cars are amazing and neither one of them suck. I think that both of them carry America's greatness within them. Really they are both fantastic

    We're talking about handling. I'm a Ford guy, i love mustangs, and as my YT name says, my all time favourite is the '71 Mach 1.
    But i'm GLAD to see that modern muscle cars are kicking European ass today in the racetrack. I mean, they didn't handle bad for their time, and now, they're just classics. (Fast ones though)

    Why doesn't everyone stop arguing and realize that both of these are amazing cars. Just ten years ago, this kind of performance wasn't even heard of. Me and my dad test drove a Camaro 1LT, and that had more power than any car we have ever driven. I went for a ride in a 2006 Mustang V6 and that was amazing. Who cares about how well they stack up against each other, just as long as you like them. If I went for a ride in "just a ZL1", you might want to put a seat cover.

  • @V8Supercar1
    @V8Supercar1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was well said. Not to mention the fact that the camaros and corvettes also uses parts from other part manufacturers as well.

  • @dodfox1

    Too many '03 and '04 Cobra owners were drag racers, and swapped out their IRS rear ends for solid rear axles. When Ford redesigned their 'retro' '05 to '14 Mustangs, they were persuaded by customer surveys to also return to the 'retro' solid rear axle by predominately drag racers.

  • @Amronbanc89
    @Amronbanc89 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love both these cars! Pros for stock,mustangs are str8 lines and view. Pros for stock,camaros is styles and track. Cons for mustangs is comfort and interior design (same for the past 5-7 years). Cons for camaros is view and headers(built into the engine).

  • @logut80
    @logut80 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the live axle as do most Mustang fans because it won't break like IRS will when you start adding slicks to put the power to the ground plus its lighter.

  • @TheBulldawg4life
    @TheBulldawg4life 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the point is this is the only test we have were the GT500 has competition, and they actually had to run the car to get numbers. The numbers they got were not impressive, for either car really (sans handling), but at the same time...they both had the same disadvantage in the drivers seat. The GT500 did what it was built to do, go fast in a straight line. The ZL1 did what it was built to do, go fast in a straight line...then turn like an SCCA champion.

  • @logut80

    I like how the "junky outdated" live axle that a lot of ppl complain about is running faster around a track than the "superior, more sophisticated" magnetic suspension

  • @TheBulldawg4life
    @TheBulldawg4life 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 700 + RWHP Livernois ZL1 that ran 9's got 4 MPG better than stock. 200+ hp over stock, without doing a thing to the supercharger and BETTER gas mileage. This is why we love LS engines. Once you open it up it runs 150% better.

  • @michaelgwells
    @michaelgwells 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a drag race, yes, both those cars will probably beat a 2013 M3. But I was referring to track lap times. Why do you think BMW's suck? Mine is a 1992 325i with 359,000 miles on the original engine. Mustangs and Camaro's sometimes get me in a straight line but can't hang at the first turn. In 5 years I replaced one wheel bearing, one clutch master cylinder and standard things like brake pads, hoses and belts. I like both reliability and performance. 25MPG, 140 MPH and 4doors. Have a nice day.

  • @TheBulldawg4life
    @TheBulldawg4life 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, the ZR1 maximum boost is 10.5 stock, and the GT500 is 15 psi stock. Lingenfelter was seeing 680 rwhp at 14 PSI on an otherwise stock LS9. The LS9 at LESS boost than the GT500 makes more horsepower at the wheels than the GT500 does before it even hits the driveline.

  • @TheBulldawg4life
    @TheBulldawg4life 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Time for a bit of information for everyone. We all know the mod list on the 9.8 ZL1 (full weight, stock block, stock s/c, stock suspension, street legal at least in terms road going safety), but now we have SOME information on the 9.9 GT500. Evo gutted the interior, modded the suspension, ripped off the front brakes, and changed gears. Judging by what we already know the ZL1 probably has a couple more mods than the GT500, but it's also got a/c and radio and seats..and can be driven on the street

    When I visited Ford's Flat Rock, MI assembly plant, I talked to some engineers about that very thing. The 'solid' live rear axle was used on the GT500 for one reason. It is super strong. It can handle up to 1,250 hp or lbs ft of torque with NO further upgrades. It hooks up better for the quarter also. GM's sophisticated IRS begins to fail at much above 750 hp.

  • @V8Supercar1
    @V8Supercar1 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    And not to mention the fact that all 1999 - 2004 cobra mustangs had independent rear suspension. IRS is not a problem for Ford. They chose the solid rear axle because their customers wanted it. Now their customers want IRS so its comming back with the redesigned car.

  • @dodfox1
    @dodfox1 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just for YOUR information, Shelby American has a 1,150 hp 'Super Snake' option that uses the stock solid 'live' rear axle that comes in the 2013 GT500 with NO upgrades necessary! It does NOT come with 'slicks.' If you plan on putting slicks on, you might want to upgrade.

  • @cesarcasas9111
    @cesarcasas9111 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to think that the GT500 was just a car with much power and nothing else, but now is a car with Launch Control, Xenon headlamps, LED daylight and of course, it has a supercharged V8 that produces 660 HP that makes the Camaro looks as if it was just another muscle car.

  • @4Fowr

    The first ZL1 Camaro was built in 1969. Chevy under rated the power at 425 HP, but on the dyno they produced nearly 550 HP stock.

  • @0gmstuckey
    @0gmstuckey 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    In 2010 the 3V was rated at 315HP and 325 Torque. Which isnt bad considering a LT1 in its highest form was at 300 HP and 330 Torque. Basic bolt on such as CAI and exhaust your right they dont respond much. But i used to have a 09 3V that at 20000 i decided i wanted to pull and build a power house. With FRPP CAI,TB,Intake,cams,heads,Borla exhaust (longtube back). Fuel and ignition upgrade along with valvetrain upgrades. I put down 415 RWHP on a conservative 91 tune.

  • @TheBulldawg4life
    @TheBulldawg4life 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The engine is tuned, how is it stock? The air path is completely changed, how is it stock? The idler pulley is changed, how is it stock? Stock doesn't mean, everything except this stuff...it means everything is stock. If you think those are "minor" mods or cheap, you'll be in for a surprise in 3 months when we FINALLY find out the full mod list.

    I've seen both of these cars driving on the road before, and I've seen them more than once on the road, up close, and from a distance. The GT500 is louder than the ZL1, loud enough that I could hear the GT500 drive by while I'm in a car with the windows up.

    I have 15 collectable cars and trucks, just for your information. I've been racing for over 40 years. And Ford still makes one of the best Mustangs ever made, the 2013/'14 GT500. I have a '65 285 hp competition AC Cobra, a 2013 GT500, and a 2014 Super Snake, so yes I do know what I'm talking about. And I also, I know very well what a wrench is.

  • @TheBulldawg4life

    You're right, the video doesn't lie. The ZL1 is the winner in the comparison, and the better car. How come Ford refuses to send a $55k GT500 to compete against a $55k ZL1?

  • @machone7I
    @machone7I 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It does have worse visibility than a compact, that's what i was talking about. It doesn't have poor visibility, but it's not trying to be easy to park, or discrete, or economical. It's a muscle car, the most civilized one but still a blood drinking fire spitting V8 monster.

    2013 ZL1 - $54,350 MSRP + $1,300 Gas Guzzler Tax + $900 Dest. Charge
    The ZL1, although in the same price range, is not in the same class as the GT500 anymore. If you look up the stats on the Boss 302, I think that's closer to the ZL1 in terms of "track" performance.

  • @DJAlmostEverything

    I'm all for the ZL1 but it doesn't put that whole 580 to the ground, the engine produces that much but through all the processes before getting the wheels spinning, eliminates much of that 580. And everyone complaining about the gap, if Chevrolet put a supercharged LS3 in like they should've, it would be much closer, it isn't like they couldn't have made the gap smaller, it's the fact that they obviously chose not too. But still on a track the ZL1's laps speed up as the GT500 stays the same.

  • @Shortstuffjo
    @Shortstuffjo 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The horsepower rating is to the crank, while the horsepower reading from the dyno is to the wheels. There is quite a bit of power lost when transferring from the crank to the wheels.

  • @logut80

    Sorry to bust your bubble FearCarlos but 7-10mph in a 1/4 race is a big difference. Put slicks on both cars so they don't have to use traction control or launch assist and it'd be a nightmare for the ZL1.

  • @sweetcheels
    @sweetcheels 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another reason Ford didnt put IRS in the 'Stangs was because it would lessen space in the rear seats and it would cost $3000 more. Ford always wanted to keep the Mustang at an affordable price for its customers, and adding an IRS doesnt help prices much.

    because of extremely unamerican technology. Ferrari and GM now share suspension parts, the ZL1 was designed on the Nurburgring in Germany, and paddle shifters are now optional in the ZL1. Also, lets not forgot it's made in Canada.

    The GT500 braked 1 foot shorter from 60-0, but the ZL1 braked 1 foot shorter from 30-0. That's more like a tie than a win for the Ford. The ZL1 won the skidpad, the slalom and all the back road real world tests too. Did you miss the part about the GT500 seeing nothing but the ZL1's taillights fading into the distance on any kind of twisting road? THAT is why the ZL1 won, it's a better all around package, while the GT500 only does one thing well.

    That's you problem. The word "If". They didn't, and its their fault for not making a true track grade car. There's these things called corners on tracks, and the fact is- the Shelby (no matter how good they make it or even how much lighter), it will NEVER be able to corner like a Camaro. They both look undeniably phenomenal, but these cars are not only about straight line performance, but about track times. When Shelby puts Nurburgring times that beat the ZL1, I'll believe it's better.

    That's very true. I'm not trying to be a troll and talk down about GM, nor am I trying to give Ford a bj on the new Cobra. The ZL1 is an incredible package, especially considering the price. As is the Cobra, for the engine that is the main selling point for the car. What I would really like to see is an LS9 in the ZL1, a Cobra with IRS, and an SRT8 Challenger with a lighter body, revised suspension, and a supercharged HEMI (possible Baracuda?), that would be a fantastic comparison.

    Look at how much more ridgidly planted the Cobra's motor is"2:02" vs. the ZL1's "1:10". The cobra just looks so much more planted and built tough. The ZL1 looks like it would start breaking things if they got to the power level of the Cobra.

  • @dtdeb99

    Plus the only reason why the lsa would make more power with less boost is because its a much higher compression engine than the 5.8 in the shelby. Lower compression engines are more suitable for boosted applications.. The 5.0 coyote makes more power than the 5.8 with equal psi because its a higher compression engine. 4 valves can take way more boost too.

    My point is that NO ONE knows what it takes to make a 2013 GT500 run 9's. No one expect Evo and Lethal, and neither of them are disclosing what they did. However we know that at the very least without N2O the gears or supercharger need to be changed or it won't get to 9. Interesting...within 10 days the ZL1 had run 9's with the stock s/c, stock gearing, stock suspension, and even full interior with the FULL mod list made available not just for research, but for sale.

    Despite loving the Camaro I have to agree that the exhaust note is pretty bad, but much better on the Z06.
    They also need to give the regular SS more volume...its sounds like it was tuned by really old people.

    The GT500 is a beast of a car, as is the ZL1. Both cars have different personalities. The Mustang is a 1/4 machine, while the ZL1 is more of a track car. That being said, the ZL1 in this video is not a 2013, it's a '12. Not that is makes any difference on the dyno, both years are rated the same. As for the heats soak issue, yes there is one. In extreme climates (Southern Az for me) my '13 ZL1, the summer has been brutal. It will be fixed before next summer, but that is 110+ city driving

    Ford HAS an IRS rear suspension! They used it on the '99 - '04 Cobra Mustangs. This car (the 2013 GT500) was designed specifically to drag race (and be street legal). IRS rear suspensions aren't as durable and don't hook-up as well in the 1/4. I race (SCCA), and have NEVER been beaten by a ZL1 in competition on the round track. The 2013 GT500 has a drag coefficient of .364, the 2012 ZL1 of .37.

    1g where did you see that? motortrend has it at .96 and the zl-1 a 1.08! theres no contest on the skid or handling in any way shape or form the zr-1 is at 1.10 and thats in the realm of one of the best ever tested on the skid

    How is the Camaro right on par? It's down on power and up on weight, the only tracks the ZL1 can win at are smaller than Laguna Seca and Willow Springs(both of which tracks are pretty small and the GT500 has won against the ZL1 on both tracks.).
    The only thing the ZL1 has going for it is IRS and magnetic suspension and the Mustang is losing even more weight and gaining IRS in the next version.

    You're right they're both good looking and sounding cars, but with Chevy having the same maxed out engine we would see 700+hp. "No replacement for displacement!"

    Btw children, everyone has their own opinion about what car is better, but the simple answer is that facts beat opinions. Yes, the GT500 is faster, yes it can beat the camaro in a straight line, but the simple fact is that on a track, which believe me most of you won't race on anytime soon the Camaro wins. So, lets break this down. Camaro > Ford on Track, Ford > Camaro on Drag strip. These are both completely different beasts. Both meant to do the opposite of one another. Stop the insults.

    In this test, Ford did a better job of putting more of its horses down.
    Did you not hear the expected power difference was 80, but the camaro was wasting 20 more horses than the GT

    I installed a set of LT headers, 15% over drive dampener, JLT CAI and a bunch of other mods including suspension mods and a Lund tune. There are a lot of improvements over my 2010 GT500.

    Accept it..the ZL1 (with all the parts KNOWN and cost KNOWN) puts it down without needing a huge wet shot of N2O.

    Ford used the live axle for durability for the mustang . Anybody that thinks Ford has no clue about IRS axles obviously never has looked under a '04 Expedition / Navigator or Lincoln Mark VIII / '89-'97 Thunderbird .

    That's funny because when I bought my 2013 GT the dealer said they sell the 500's almost as fast as they roll of the truck. & if you look up the sales figures for both these cars you would see your logic just doesn't hold up to scrutiny. I test drove all 3 of these cars. The Camaro SS 1st. Challenger 2nd. & the Mustang GT last. Wanted an honest side by side comparison before I plopped down a serious chunk of my hard earned money. I bought the Ford because it simply was that much better!

    If you put world class F1 drivers or nascar drivers into BOTH the GT500 and the ZL1, and had them SWITCH OFF, I have no doubt that BOTH car's times would be improved on most of those tests. I also have no doubt that the ZL1 would STILL leave the GT500 in the dust on twisty roads, on the skidpad, in the slalom and everywhere else where handling is a factor. Why? Because relative to the GT500, the ZL1 handles better and is faster in any kind of handling-based activity.

    Depends on what you want to do with the car. If you want to drag race, nothing beats a live rear axle (ability to handle 1250 lbs-ft of torque (live axle) vs. 750 lbs-ft of torque (IRS). If you want to track the car, an IRS is moderately better. This GT500's rear axle, however, is not even close to the live axle of only a few years ago. Many, many sophisticated improvements have been made. With nothing more than a change to DOT 4 brake fluid, this GT500 out tracks even the ZL1's IRS.

    Yeah in my opinion there should be a factory upgrade option for the real Axel. And this years 2013 GT500 looks better at the end than it did in 2012
