@jamesbrassfield8409 I wouldn't allow movers to touch my rackmounts or the rack they are installed in. That's a job I would reserve to myself and my ServerLIFT. Turns a three man job into a single person job
It's honestly been really interesting seeing you dip your toes into a world I know well. You're smart, you know tech, and the enterprise side of things is a whole undiscovered country for you, so when you pick something up and talk about it, it's very fresh and interesting. I've already learned a couple things. So basically Level1Techs colab when?
Hey mate, first off good ya for getting stuck into it, makes me happy to see people throwing themselves in the deep, with the Dream machine to the switch connection, get a 10 Gbps SFP+ Direct Attach Cable and go from the SFP+ ports directly. While there is nothing wrong from going from switch port to switch port, this makes things cleaner, 10gb link between the router and the switch instead of splitting a single switch port bandwidth for everything that needs access for routing and internet access. Once again as a fairly long time viewer, proud of ya mate.
In my early IT days, my supervisor opted to load a full size server rack into the back of an empty box truck with equipment still in the rack. I told him the straps wouldn't hold and the crossbar wouldn't help. He told me it'd be fine. It wasn't. Quite the fun 24 hours of enacting the disaster recovery plan!
I used to work on RAMACs for IBM, basically refrigerator size boxes of hard drives for a mainframe. Those things were big, heavy, and expensive, so IBM has very detailed instructions on how they were to be packed, and special crates to put them in. Well... someone just rolled one of these thing into the back of a box truck and sent it on its way. That poor machine rolled all around the back of that truck hitting the walls multiple times. To add insult to injury it wound up against the doors when the truck stopped. The doors were opened and the thing fell out of the back of the truck and crashed to the floor. (thankfully no one was in the way!). Pretty much everything was bent, the machine was scrapped and the customer got a HUGE bill.
Great setup. It must be quite a luxury to be able to get all the cabling done during the construction phase, and have everything just the way you want it.
Awesome, Greg! Didn't seem that long ago that we saw the new place with just the framing done! Glad you opted for the pool! My family has certainly enjoyed ours over the years.
I wish your move goes well and not like when I last did when it poured with rain all day and was about 3 degrees! Enjoying the content as I am a complete network/server noob too.
Your Dream Machine should have a DAC cable included in the box. At 9:12 I see you connected the switch to the Dream Machine with an ethernet cable. It's better to use the DAC cable in one of the SFP ports on the far right of the devices. That will give you a 10Gbit connection between the devices. You can even connect two and combine them to make that 20Gbit.
I feel like these dress rehearsals for your final install are going to really make the rack/network install smooth. I also love the productive feedback from the community.
Congratulations on the new home! I just had my first new build finished last year. It's stressful but also exciting and rewarding. I wanted to do all the smart home stuff during the building, but I had so many other expenses I decided that could wait (and now I'll probably never get around to it 😅).
I'm excited for you! It would be interesting to see an update video on how accurate your network/cable planning was after moving in and getting everything settled in. Good plan vs actual lessons learned like number of drops, drop location, do all of the drops work, prep for future expansion, would you change anything...
Unless you plan on frequently turning power on / off devices, you should consider mounting the PDU in the rear of the rack. You may also want to look into vertical PDUs for racks as well, also mounted in the rear.
Nice to see the setup but I would really recommend you to go 10Gbit. It's not complicated or expensive these days. There is a really nice and affordable Unifi 10Gb switch called the Unifi Aggregation with 8 10 Gb ports. Then connect that to your Dream Machine, your 48 port switch, the NVR and your server and possibly your editing workstation and your setup will be so much nicer.
I think a Storinator added to that rack would round things out very nicely. You could eventually add a few 100 TB's of storage and hold on to more of that security footage a lot longer.
Dude Ubiquiti set you UPPPP! I am beyond jealous, and you just got into homelabs/servers. I want one of those doorbell cams so bad. Congrats on the new digs!
Sounds like a lot of fun just playing around with all of the server stuff. Sometimes, that's the best way to really learn this stuff. And building a new system from scratch means that you can tweak things as you go without worrying about getting something wrong the first time. Until it's all implemented, it's all like a big test bench.
I have the Dream Machine SE and one of their POE switches with 4 APs. Only once can I recall Ubiquiti releasing an update that caused issues. Other than that, I think you will be very happy with their product and it's dependability.
i had some good experience with ubiquiti. i dont have it in my home but at work i needed to test if 2 AP pro,s were working along with a dream machine. Set everything up and it was running on no time after applying changes. The web UI is also very easy to use if you know what your doing. good luck on the system and congratulation with your new house
New house hype! Congrats! And ooh network gear and rack video. Love it. Can't wait for the moving and studio setup videos, some of my favorite kinds of content lol
Having conduit or tubes for your data/internet lines from pole to house will save time and frustration in the future. Most times cable companies say they will bury the line in the yard. But come summer time landscaping cuts grass and weed whacks the grass along with your cable line into the house!
I live where the ground is frozen solid for several months of the year so some of that prep in the yard is more challenging lol Anything that gets dug pretty much has to go 4 feet down.
It's really interesting watching you mess around with servers and networking. It's a field I don't know too well myself, which makes it fun to watch because I'm learning with you haha
Really jealous of those cameras and the new house. I have a house built in the 50s and running lines is a huge pain. Congrats on the house and the equipment.
I always enjoy your videos and I welcome you to the networking side of things. I'm also a Ubiquiti enthusiast and have an entire rack full of equipment for my home network. I can't wait to see how your new home looks and your new network. Having a solid home internet is very important since lots of people work from home these days. Greetings from Round Rock Texas!!
Things are looking good. If I were you I would still put one or two ceiling fans in your studio depending on the size of it. I live in hot Arizona and with the A/C running or not, it just makes the room feel more comfortable.
One tip as I'm sure you'll have to move the server rack again. Remove the batteries out of the UPS before installing it. It makes it a TON easier to move and install if the batteries aren't actually installed in the UPS.
I seen Tool live in Knoxville with my friend of 20 years. He passed away last week. Massive heart attack. He also had a 2023 Gr Corolla I drove it to his funeral. Been using ubiquiti for a few years now and i am super happy i can just upgrade what i want or need instead of buying a whole ass router, instead i can either upgrade my camera to something better or newer, same with the firewall, switch, poe switch or even the acsess point, AP which i just recently did
Am I the only one that just “nerded out” or what? I was lost in the sauce 5min into it but I’ve been glued to it! 😂 Congrats on the crib! I’ve always liked your channel and content. 👊👊
One day, I want the whole setup like this. Where everything is connected together and mostly just one brand for internet/network control. It will most likely be Ubiquiti as well. I currently have different hardware for my doorbell and security cameras. I want it all one one setup.
lucky bastard, I love Ubiquiti. My whole network is setup around it. I would love to have even more stuff for free, lol. I actually just bought an Pro AP, it has great range and it maxes out my gigabit speeds over wifi, something I never thought I would see happen.
A few things, on your Dream Machine SE, you're using the 2.5gbe 'wan' connection point. If your provider has faster speeds, you CAN use one of the 10gbe ports as a wan port (that's what I'm doing on a Dream Machine Pro, with the 'main' wan port switched to secondary and a LTE backup connection set up there. You'd also be much better off to use either a short fiber or coax 10g cable in the sfp+ ports on your switches and dream machine for your 'backhaul' between the switches/firewall. If you were to add one of their 'aggregation' 10g switches, you can pull a few ports off that to specific machines you want to be 10g if necessary. You DEFINITELY want that larger pipe between the switches, less network congestion, etc. The aggregation switch wouldn't strictly be necessary (as your pro switches have 4 10g ports as-is, and those CAN be use to go to a PC, even on copper with the correct gbic's installed), but I opted for that route as I needed more 10g ports (i'm using the non-pro switches, with 2 10g SFP+ and 2 1g SFP ports). The only other thing I'd definitely be rethinking is that power distrubtion switch.. As I'm sure you're very well aware, lighted switches are like magnets to kids... Expect things to get togged on and off randomly, lol..
Your going to need a vented door on that media closet and a vent in the ceiling to the attic to keep that room cool. The only other option is a small stand alone ac unit. Also do you have a 20amp circuit ran to that room?
We already have active ventilation in the closet. Discussed in a much earlier house tour video. The base of the door set will be modified to fit vents.

Nobody should be ripping Greg's head off for not knowing what he's doing. It wouldn't be a Greg video if he was flawless with everything, and didn't involve us in his research and troubleshooting process (which is what makes these videos so incredibly valuable). There's a reason he signs off "thank you for learning with me," and not "thank you for watching me flex my encyclopedic knowledge at you." Thank you, Greg, for always giving me confidence and assuring me it's okay to not know everything, as long as I have the desire to figure it out.
also FYI, do not mount the AP Pro directly to the ceiling, need to have it dropped down a bit from the ceiling, otherwise a brown spot will be in the roof, it gets really hot otherwise
bro pls film your home network build process... i wanna see it from the rack to the switch and to all the ports u're gonna place in the house. Im only a desktop support and i don't really get to hands on things like networking

PC / Network Hardware shopping is always the best kind of shopping. Linus did the same sort of thing, he built an OP home gaming server, for multiple PCs to game from. Definitely a good way to go.
Greg, if you're using truenas, you should have the drives exposed as individual drives, not a motherboard raid. Then create two mirrored virtual devices and add both to the same pool. Effectively raid 10, but then you can add another pair of mirrored drives to stripe across 3 (or more depending on how many pairs you want to add) virtual devices.
Oh now I see, you've virtualized TrueNAS are are running the ZFS in proxmox. Never used it. Might toy around with it at some point. I just run TrueNAS on bare metal and create the virtual machines in TrueNAS if I want one.
The house looks good great advice on tubes running cables for phone lines etc underground nice idea. I`m enjoying the Latest videos on the Network drives. I hope that the rest of the move goes very well and your soon up and running in there. Take care Great video as always.
So, yes, you can split the GPU into multiple virtual GPUs, there is some scripting to do this, but yes, you can. There are tutorials on TH-cam on how to do this.
You used to not be able to due to Nvidia's restrictions, but they became more lenient There's a specific set of drivers required and scripting as I said.
I see what you did there. Funny. :) Im glad you filled in your gap. :) and seriously, I hope you enjoy your new home and all the BEST to you and your family with the move.
Yes you can split the graphics to multiple VM systems, you will have to configure the server to set up separate process and ram stepping (direct cpu access and data transfer) for each video process. Raid 5 or Raid 10 - all depends on the terms you are using, because technically Raid 10 is Raid 5, (being both mirrored and striped, with a individual drive for the ecc data which is '5' but, 1 / 0 (aka raid 10) big advantage in the general format is being allowed to hot swap drives while the ECC control format auto corrects or restores lost data) HINT :: All your network cables at each end should have a unique ID tag stuck or linked to the cable, IE - first cable is id tag FR Door Camera, second cable is FR Street Camera, sort of thing, (all cable tags should be a bit away from the end, that way you have cable to clip/replug the ends and the ID tags allow you to keep track of what IS and is not plugged in) makes it much easier to trace a line IF it gets clipped/broken and track it down or replace.
rackstuds needed to sponsor the rack. And you should have connected Dream Machine to Switch with DAC so you can get a full 10gb connection to each other
stack a switch then keystone then other switch.. if you do helps with all cable mamagement to keystone from ALL incoming runs same level up and outdoor runs help hide i little better plus keeps distances from switch to all rack macchines similar length
I don't know anything about all this stuff but I would like to learn. We will be building a new home in about 2 years and I want a server among everything else.
Greetings Greg! I recommend creating a main network for your devices in the rack and managing your cameras, LAN, and WIFI through individual VLANs for each type of use. This way, you can avoid congestion in your network caused by constant packet traffic from, for example, cameras. I hope everything goes well with the installation of your new equipment.
H.265 Greg! Love the video though :) @ 9:17, yes thats correct. Also, think about having 1 TB of free space per camera for 30 days of 4k footage. At least it should be pretty close to that (this is kinda what I do for a living hehe). Server build is.... a monster lol Should do you very well for the intended services you described that you wanted to use it for. I used to build servers (with Ubuntu) for NVRs at my job, and they are no match against this beast!
I hope you have a source of ventilation for your media closet or your going to cook your equipment. I haven’t heard you say anything about this. Please include in a video how your going to accomplish this.

and seriously, I hope you enjoy your new home and all the BEST to you and your family with the move.
Yes you can split the graphics to multiple VM systems, you will have to configure the server to set up separate process and ram stepping (direct cpu access and data transfer) for each video process.
Raid 5 or Raid 10 - all depends on the terms you are using, because technically Raid 10 is Raid 5, (being both mirrored and striped, with a individual drive for the ecc data which is '5' but, 1 / 0 (aka raid 10) big advantage in the general format is being allowed to hot swap drives while the ECC control format auto corrects or restores lost data)
HINT :: All your network cables at each end should have a unique ID tag stuck or linked to the cable, IE - first cable is id tag FR Door Camera, second cable is FR Street Camera, sort of thing, (all cable tags should be a bit away from the end, that way you have cable to clip/replug the ends and the ID tags allow you to keep track of what IS and is not plugged in) makes it much easier to trace a line IF it gets clipped/broken and track it down or replace.
I've been wanting to do a simplified version of this but man my eyes went crossed as soon as I climbed in the attic lol
rackstuds needed to sponsor the rack. And you should have connected Dream Machine to Switch with DAC so you can get a full 10gb connection to each other
I love Ubiquiti products. I setup my home network using their products and it works really well. No issues at all.
Hey Greg, when will you make the video about your experience with m2 max mac studio that you decided to use for 30 days?
Wait for a nice tropical storm, that will fill your new pool for you. lol
Not a bad idea LOL.
stack a switch then keystone then other switch.. if you do helps with all cable mamagement to keystone from ALL incoming runs same level up and outdoor runs help hide i little better plus keeps distances from switch to all rack macchines similar length
done a couple some hide in walls from same level as switch uppers and outside run though cieling bundle
Bro! I'm so happy for your house!!!!
One thing you may want to consider is a second NIC just for your trueNAS install.
Now you gotta crouch for the buttons at the bottom tho.
Wow Greg ,this is amazing and looks to be pensive ! This is going to be killer!
Awesome work. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to how everything will work.
I don't know anything about all this stuff but I would like to learn. We will be building a new home in about 2 years and I want a server among everything else.
I enjoy these videos that show progress with your new home
Great Shirt - Great Band 🎸
Greetings Greg! I recommend creating a main network for your devices in the rack and managing your cameras, LAN, and WIFI through individual VLANs for each type of use. This way, you can avoid congestion in your network caused by constant packet traffic from, for example, cameras. I hope everything goes well with the installation of your new equipment.
VLANs are definitely a new thing for me, but I've been suggested the same thing by others! Will look into it.
Great video but would of like4d to see how you connected the power cable to the 4090. Does not look like much room with the cover on.
That's going to be a super sweet set up Greg : ) x
Very cool to watch your journey with this!
Bearded Gregg in effect
You probably won’t need it but I feel that fans are kind of a must to help with circulating hot and cold air even if you have dedicated AC.
Great video. I look forward to watching the move!
H.265 Greg! Love the video though :)
@ 9:17, yes thats correct.
You need some rack studs. Seriously, they are way better than any of the rack nuts.
Finally, my man will say goodbye to Wi-Fi and be fully wired in! Let's Go😁
I hope you have a source of ventilation for your media closet or your going to cook your equipment. I haven’t heard you say anything about this. Please include in a video how your going to accomplish this.
I love that you used the term NUB given the conversation we had in Houston lol
I would definitely put wheels or casters on the bottom that server rack something strong enough to hold the weight trust me you'll thank me later
Switch from Rufus to Ventoy. Dragging and dropping is a whole lot easier.
Carpet is also good to avoid slipping on stairs.
