    Looks great! I especially like the short patch cables. The planning and arrangement of devices was well thought out. A suggestion for the cable management behind the rack, it is inexpensive to pick up a roll of Velcro tape at Harbor Freight and cut the tape as needed and comb back the cables and add Velcro approximately every 12 inches. In a home lab the Velcro makes upgrades and modifications easy. Great looking setup. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TechTalkwithSamir
      @TechTalkwithSamir  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the suggestion. I do already have Velcro at home which I will cut up to further organize the cables in the back! I just have another project where I need to run a few more cables there so I’m just waiting for that before I clean up the back of the rack!

    I've been watching a lot of these cabling setup (graduated from watching gaming setups 🙂) and I'm about to fix the cabling at my brother's small business network. This is nice work. I would personally opt for a floor standing rack with castors for easier access to the back.
    With the current setup, I would use Velcro (hook and loop) to tidy up the cable at the back a little and get a cover at least on one side panel.

    Call you ISP and ask for a SFP+ ONT, it will plug right into your Unify gear. I hear lots of fiber ISPs are now supplying them, or at least letting you know which ones you can buy yourself and use so you can ditch your ISPs box. Nothing cooler than having your fiber from the street plug right into your own equipment.

    love your videos and advice and subbed. please help I need a home network and thinking of going with a wall mounted rack So for a new home network would you recommend and DMPSE ( instead of the lozenge one, and future proof for security cameras too, getting ri di nesst and blink ) and the SA10GB switch and some in-wall access points as I cant have ceiling ones. Do you need anything else? would you put your synology and battery back up in the rack with all this next to where the internet comes in the wall? Please reply thanks. WOW YOU certainly upgrades from 2 years ago and yes the rack is awesome too.

    • @TechTalkwithSamir
      @TechTalkwithSamir  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for checking out the channel.
      It depends on your particular usage case. UDM SE is great but can be an overkill for a lot of people. But if you plan on getting UniFi cameras down the road then it’s definitely something worth investing in. As for the 10Gb switch, it depends on how many 10Gb devices you will have. If you only have two devices, the SFP ports on the UDMSE will be enough since you can configure both of them to be LAN ports. But if you have more than 2 then yes definitely get a 10 gig switch. Another factor is whether your 10 gig devices have SFP+ ports or RJ45. I only recommend the switch aggregation if you exclusively have SFP+ devices. Otherwise it’s better to get a switch made for RJ45 ports.
      As for where to put the Synology, it once again depends on your setup. I personally like to have it close to my network gear because I can put everything on the same battery rather than having multiple batteries.

    • @jennifermedia6288
      @jennifermedia6288 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I decided to have a rack in the office and do it all from there. . I feel a big tip is get a bigger rack than you think necessary as I will always expand it and battery back up nas take space don’t they. I may use a patch Panel and keystone couplers and then patch to the se. It will be a work in progress. I’ve order the se and in wall 6 access point to start.

  • @jonathanfrederick1644
    @jonathanfrederick1644 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doesnt your cat 5e cables running in your walls limit your network speed for future growth in speed ie multi gig connections?

    • @TechTalkwithSamir
      @TechTalkwithSamir  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. For me, all the devices those cables go to will never require more than a gigabit. The devices that are using 10gb, I’m either using DAC cables or fiber. Given the unlikelihood of me ever needing multi gig for those Ethernet ports, I just couldn’t justify the cost difference. But I do have a few devices that I am running CAT6 to but even those are only gigabit devices.

  • @dave0813
    @dave0813 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Outstanding video!! I am building a home and looking to use Unify systems. Rookie question - why do you use patch panels, I thought the internet from your ISP goes directly into the switches or UDM-SE.

    • @TechTalkwithSamir
      @TechTalkwithSamir  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for checking out the video. The patch panels give me flexibility for better cable organization if I need to move things around or connect different things to different devices. I could have just terminated all cables to RJ-45 ends but it would have been a lot messier and harder to keep track of the cabling. So in short, it’s more for the aesthetics than functionality.

    Hi Samir, I upgraded my network setup to Unifi gear. Got a Cat6a cable from True cable, UDM SE PRO, 8 port USW aggregation switch, 48 port Pro POE switch, and Enterprise 8 port POE switch. Connected them all with DAC cables and lastly, my ISP upgraded to 5 gig internet speeds but for some reason, the Unifi switches are capping the speeds at around 2.5 gigs. When I connect the PC directly to the UDM SE PRO via the SFP+ LAN port, I am getting 5 gig speeds but am unable to do so using the SFP+ ports on either of the switches. Would anyone here happen to know why this could be happening? I am really having a hard time trying to find a solution for this. Unifi support team has taken my support tickets but it's been almost 3 weeks and they have just not responded back to me. :( Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

    • @TechTalkwithSamir
      @TechTalkwithSamir  ปีที่แล้ว

      What happens if you do iperf tests between a machine connected to one of the switches and a machine connected to the UDM SE? Does it also have same issue? To test that you would need to change both the SFP+ ports on the UDM SE to LAN.
      This way youll be able to troubleshoot without having the internet connection being in the equation to see where the bottleneck is.

    I think the only thing that nags at me is the DACs going across devices. If you need to swap out the switch above the patch panel, you have to unplug the one above it, too.

    • @TechTalkwithSamir
      @TechTalkwithSamir  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea not ideal but to accommodate the network topology and the most minimalistic cabling, this was the best way. I did consider putting long DAC cables through some of the empty slots on the patch panel and bring it down through the back, but that seemed to create a bigger mess. Who knows maybe a future iteration of my setup will fix it lol
