    Impressive on the thermal pad. I use to assist in sourcing/buying of those, and they can be (depending on the type of thermal pad) can be $30~$75 PER SHEET that size. That was our "BULK" (thousands of sheets per order) price.
    Copper isn't cheap...currently non-processed price is $3.75/kg TRADING price. Want Bar/Sheet/Plate? Jack that price. 1/8"x4"x24" plate is going for nearly $100. Now add in the machining costs? Yep...sky rocketing cost.
    Honestly? $1000 for that setup is NOT bad. It is actually under the generally accepted prototyping costs we used in industry, and this is prototype style build. Pretty cool!

  • @aserta
    @aserta 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    It's also that there's no point in polishing that plate until final install unless the polish and then wrap it, which is an extra layer of complexity. Something they may offer once they've figured out the formula. Maybe something like three options. Raw, tumbled, polished (based on other products of copper or aluminium or brass i've seen in the past). Honestly, i'd personally go for a tumbled finished. Relatively easy to clean. Super shine doesn't last unless you lacquer it. Tho raw is also a cool idea because you can let it oxidize. There's some pretty wicked pure copper PC cases out there with that effect.

Definitely didn't pay close to half that price for GPU and copper water block but that was 2008 prices for you. Dang inflation 😭

    • @TheOriginalFaxon
      @TheOriginalFaxon 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The especially savage price is that the relative price of copper from 2007 until now is relatively unchanged. We actually saw a glut in the price of copper from 2010 to 2020, where after it crashed and recovered in 2008, it went on a downtrend for a few years, went up again due to the pandemic, and has been on the downtrend a bit again since 2022, with the price hovering around $3.75 a pound right now. It just shows how little of the cost of a block like this is the actual literal piece of copper. It really makes you wonder why prices on waterblocks are as high as they are, even after accounting for the cost of CnC mills and skiving machines (to make the block fins). It makes sense here due to all the custom work and the low volume, but how many blocks is EK selling? Corsair is moving blocks for half the price that perform almost as good. It just doesn't make sense to me but then I haven't looked at their insider data

      I brought a piece of copper to work for my coworker to machine for my water cooling project. He usually works on steel. He made quite a mess of it. Aperently copper is annoying to machine for various reasons like work hardening.

    • @TheOriginalFaxon
      @TheOriginalFaxon 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@compwiz00 lol that's wild, i would never have assumed that would be an issue to such a degree. Copper can be harder than steel or almost as soft as lead depending how it's annealed, and when you alloy it to make brass it'll go through armor rated for steel penetrators sometimes (if it doesn't explode into fragments first). I have just never heard of work hardening being an issue when machining it, but then I'm not a machinist.

      I love how he’s skipping over him using it on the wrong GPU and the emails of them asking for it back and being promised it was being shipped back before being given away, just to make his ‘point’.

      @ignignxkt that's a fact. He didn't even use it on the correct gpu. The incompetence level was way high. That's why Steve at Gamers Nexus call out Linus on quite a few things that ltt was doing wrong.

    Dang, this was way better and more informative than other TH-cam channels that have reviewed a product like this. It was objectively reviewed and wasn't auctioned off without permission too. Nice!

    Billet Labs deserve all the love and support from our small group of pc lovers and enthusiasts.Period. I am very happy they are in business after that unethical trick LT pulled on them and i very happy with Jay who made this video.
    Hoping for a kickass steampunk build in 2024 with this baby ,
    Jay , wish you all the best for the health issues you are dealing with. Get well soon man.
    Happy new year, cheers.

    After how LTT screwed up with their prototype, they should've have gone to you for reviewing this product!
    Also I personally would've liked to see a build with this, especially with a high-pressure cooling solution. LTT has their thing (I forgot what's it called) but they butchered the whole review so that's not gonna happen.

    This cooler is very suitable for high-end motherboard characteristics where users can freely use RAM and VRMs with high forms.
    It's great to see you always doing research on new devices. I last did it in 2013 when intel was still gen 4 haswell and I still use it until now and stopped because of financial limitations. But with your presence on youtube, my knowledge about computers is growing. I pray that soon I can get a computer with a newer generation. Thank you, stay healthy and God bless you, your family and your crew.

    It was too big to be called a Water Block. Massive , thick, heavy, and far too industrial.
    Indeed, it was a heap of raw copper.

    Hey Jay, been sweating pipes for a VERY long time, the prep before the lead and flame even touches the pipes is the biggest thing, the sweat itself is piss easy.
    I have never once in my life as a plumber had to open a wall back up for a leaking joint that I sweat, not once.
    Just do the prep correctly and it'll be a breeze.
    Measure your pipes to cut joint neck to joint neck, do not over apply the flux, and once the joint is saturated stop adding lead to keep from getting runs. Use the grey scotchbrite pads that you use for body working, you can use wet and dry sand paper but you'll have to tear it into or cut strips constantly, that pad will outlast that sand paper, scuff the pipe head AND the inside surface of the joint, use water while scuffing, dry off the surfaces, with a clean (not oily) cloth, they do not need to be bone dry just not dripping wet, do not touch the joints after this with your naked fingers, (skin oils etc. will contaminate the surfaces).
    Also, watch out for the pipe heads after cutting them, those are razor sharp, remember to de-burr the ends after the cut, you do not want slivers of copper floating around the loop causing blockages or getting caught in the pumps impellor.
    Apply a bit if flux to both surfaces, and then bring in your heat, once you start seeing a green flame, remove the heat, introduce the lead solder from the opposite side and watch the solder wick into the joint, once it does not wick anymore stop, otherwise you'll get blobs forming on the underside of the joint, after that, clean off the flux residue.
    You can also if you want to use silver solder, same technique.
    Just a tip, at some point in time, you are going to have to solder in close proximity to other things that don't like heat. Get some off cut pieces of stainless sheet to use as heat shields, stainless is a poor heat conductor and the solder does not stick to it, do not use galvanised sheet for this purpose.
    Good luck.

    This takes me back to the early days of water-cooling later 90's early 2000's when everything was just pure copper with An acrylic or copper top. Coupled with some tubing from home Depot, an aquarium pump, a rad and some sunon fans you were in business! Of course to show it off, don't forget to Dremel out a window in your case and add a cold cathode light.
    Good times when everything was about function and not so much about the looks.
    Love it!
