Which reminds me of Jack Daniel's joke : ''In Tenessee, you can gamble all you want, make a fool of yourself, and you won't even have to pay! We'll even have you over for dinner. But that's on you''. I just made that up.
I can relate. I lived in Hong Kong for 20 years and I saw rights and freedoms slowly disappear and people increasingly self censor. It became a gloomy place where I didn't feel safe. So many people have left. Stay free.
Do you have a idea where most decided to move to since there are some easy escapes like BN(O) visa in UK (even applies ot those born after 97 as long as one parent is BN(O))
I'm glad I left China itself, even as a kid I thought something was off about what's going on with some classes and textbooks I was given. Funny enough, a lot of people who live in HK moved to where I live, so an adequate grasp of Cantonese helped even here.
@@kyugiyeneku1803 I met a lot of HKers when I lived in London and they all moved to UK since it’s easy to move there for them and there’s not ‘that’ much of a cultural adjustment since HK culture is obviously quite influenced by British culture

Fun fact: In Russia we have Christmas from 7 to 8th of January and...we kinda don't celebrate it, instead our main celebration is New Years Eve wile most of the world celebrate Xmas from 24th to 25th of December
That paranoia shit is real. My dad here in Riga still is in that fear mindset since he watches ru state media. I remember how he warned me not to share photos and write a blog or comment in social media back in like 2006. And still every time I visit him he makes some kind of a joke if I'm ready to flee from a war or something. Makes me sad, very very sad. But, happy Xmas!
I was adopted from Russia at eight months old and I have friends who were born and raised in Russia who have told me about their lives. Part of my university studies are about Russia and its relation with the west. It’s crazy to see what Russia was like in 2002 vs now
Its the same about the russophobia they talk about: phobia is an unrealistic fear for something. Dispicing and being cautious about russia is in no way unrealistic or without b ase

Roman's right. I am Russian, never could leave even though I was never okay with the whole thing. I have some thoughts on the video, what I think might be going on with our country, but I can't share them for the exact reasons stated in the video. The paranoia is real
From a random 23 year old: Hi NFKRZ, I've been following your journey since the day you uploaded that you moved away from Russia. Just wanted to say to you that it's okay to both love and despise something at the same time. I'm sure you have wonderful memories of your home country, the culture, friends, family ext. But it's very noticeable throughout your content your unhappiness with the ways things are going geopolitically. You're going through a tough time, it's okay to grief the good memories and the potential you once saw for how things could go. It's okay to be scared about how things are developing and that your future and that place's future might not align. You are human and you are doing your best, at the end of the day that is all that matters. I enjoy your content, thank you for uploading. Live your life, be happy and take care.
I love Venezuelan food. I wish the world was so that we could all sit down and break bread together anywhere in the world. I pray that soon there will be peace and stability and plenty for your country. You're people are tough.
Roman, As a “low key” paranoid American who has followed geopolitics for over 40 years, I can say with absolute conviction, you don’t need to explain yourself. I spent a summer studying Russian in Moscow in 1985 and saw the USSR in real life. On that same trip, I visited Tbilisi and Kiev. Watching current events reinforces the notion that history repeats itself. The 6 years I spent living in Finland, solidified my understanding of the precariousness of peace and the sacrifices that must be made to preserve it. Now as I watch my compatriots fall victim to fascist propaganda and the U.S. inching closer and closer towards a system of oligarchy, I take nothing for granted when it comes to civil rights, freedom of speech, or safety. Your channel is exactly the type of programming I am interested in, and I am so glad that you made the choices you made. I appreciate your coverage of the US’s decline towards fascism and your “man on the street” perspective of Russian society. You offer a perspective that corporate controlled media will likely never be able to create. Thank you.
@@wildewutz-t6y It is almost as if experience is earned by living life and one can understand the world and its events better if they have experienced it in some way.
What the freak are talking about? Media being fascist? unless you talking about left wing maybe, they all said Harris would win because they are an echo chamber.
Those times have been going on ever since Peter the Great. At least all the Russian history, its literature, and philosophers all seem to show that things haven't changed in centuries ;/
Hey Roman, I've been a long term viewer since my highschool days and that was over 8 years ago. I'm really glad that you made it out and that you're safe
God we are so glad you left. Congradulations you have done brilliantly. You are young, travel as much as possible before they blow it all up. Enjoy as much of life as you can. We all wish you the best. Just look at your time in Portugal as recovering from Ruzzia PTSD.
Roman, I have no doubt that in 20 or 30 years your videos will be used as first hand documentation of the Russian side of this period. You are doing a great service by your continual documentation of your processes and exposing it to the public.
Just like Roman did, you might have to be willing to embrace the cold if you leave. As someone who was born in a relatively cold climate, I can vouch it requires a re-ajusting to it every single time the season returns. Maybe I should take the cue from some of my loud next-door neighbours and migrate to Florida every winter. But then again, why bother. They already export nothing but the best bananas & oranges during the same period every year. 'Vitamin C, Baby!'
Russia is an interesting place. When you live there for years without leaving, you get used to all the crazy commotion that happens there. Someone got prisoned over a comment? Inflation is record-high again? Putin got 99% approval rating? You react to all of that calmly because it has always been like that, right? And when you leave Russia and spend some time abroad, coming back strikes you as a sledgehammer right into the face. It's like you coming back to a room that has this horrible smell and you just cannot ignore it after a few hours on a fresh air. These news and laws seem too bizarre, too messed up to you, all of a sudden. Someone got prisoned over a... comment? What did he write? Inflation is how much? How do people live? The media totally made up Putin's rating!
Psilocybin mushrooms have certainly had a beneficial effect on my mental health. They've been quite effective for me in managing my anxiety and depression.
Yeah. More people should try psychedelics. Not only in a medical environment because in some countries they are illegal. But with the right set and setting they can do wonders.
Totally understand. We went from Russia at 2022, in November. Sended husband first, then came with daughter and a cat. It was SO AWESOME just to sleep without any thoughts that in any minute you can be arrested cause you argued with relatives about “war is bad, all that’s madness” or because you wrote a comment in internet (like NO WAR, that’s enough), or cause your kid suspiciously doesn’t go on “lessens about important” (propaganda lessons). There is freedom in Russia - you can choose the reason why you are in a jail. I can’t wait in jail until there would be change of government - i have a kid to raise and I have to make her childhood normal as much as I can.

Hey Roman! As a Hungarian, I feel the exact same about Hungary and living in the 'Land of St. Mary'. Even though it's nowhere near as bad as in Russia, it's certainly getting worse just as bad. It's very hard to explain to people who don't live in this kind of environment. I plan to move abroad the moment I finish high school. I hope everything will be fine to everyone who's living this. And I'm glad that you took the opportunity to get outta that hellhole. Kudos to you.
Hi! I'm your neighbor from Romania cheering you on! Been living in Canada since 2018. It's never easy being an immigrant (especially solo, like I did lol) but it can be so worth it! It's not like you discover Paradise overnight, but OMGGG being able to live in a place where things are ✨functional✨ takes away so much of the stress in your daily life. If I'm gonna guess, your experience in Hungary is similar to what many of us, in the Eastern Bloc, have been facing - a lot of corruption and, even worse, a lot of incompetence, from the highest to lowest levels of state governance. If you wanna achieve something, you usually get ahead by lying, cheating, and stealing. If you just wanna do a good job and lift your community up you're seen as weak and stupid because you don't play their silly games. Keep studying, while you're in high school - this is one very valuable thing you'll be able to carry with you, if you choose to immigrate. And, hopefully, you'll find a place where competence and goodwill are rewarded, not punished 😉
Рома ты молодец, I can relate so much, got dual Canadian Russian citizenship and I lived in Russia when the "SMO" started. It was a daily struggle to try to convince myself that I wasn't gonna get drafted and that everything was right until I left the country 4 months later. It was an instant huge relief, I could sleep so much better. Almost 3 years later, my friends back there are doing the same "everything is fine, nothing really changed" thing that you describe in your video. You made the right call. Plus by leaving, your tax doesn't sponsor the government's war efforts.
Every govt uses tax money for some immoral purpose(s). We are not responsible for what the govt does with our money. We merely render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. But speaking purely of taxes -- the rate in Russia is 13-15%, which is way lower than any Western country I'm aware of, so at least less of your money goes to those bad purposes.
@@ExVeritateLibertas That's a weak argument. Look at Sweden, for example. Relatively high tax rates, though the rich pay the largest piece (by FAR) and if you're poor you either pay nothing or very, very little in tax. The money doesn't go to war and oppression (of course some of it goes to defense, but that's a fraction of the taxes). The rest of the money goes towards free, great healthcare. Money to the sick and poor. Rent and apartments to those who suffer. Free schools and universities. Infrastructure. Maternity leave is paid for well over a year or two so that everyone who wants to can have a family, without thinking about money or who will take care of the child the first year/years. And that's just some of it, the basics that *every* Government should provide for their citizens and people in need. It's about what YOU as a citizen get from your taxes, not how much or little you pay. Swedes get *great* value from their taxes, so people - generally - don't whine about having to pay them, and the ones who do are the ones who are either too ignorant or dumb to understand what they would lose if the system changed.
You're far braver than me. If I lived in Russia or some totalitarian state, I'd be towing that line, pretending to agree with the government, but all the while, I really...wouldn't! As Stalin once sought the ever present 'false communist', I would be a 'false Putinist' just biding my time until I could leave that fearful place and never ever go back while she's still in chains.
Assuming you live in the U.S. my guess it you'd be a 'false Trumpist' and you might be providing cover for your long lost cousin, who doesn't really mind hiding in a closet anyways cause she likes to try on all sorts of wacky blue & white dresses. But if she's still waiting there like six years from now, she may begin to feel a bit forgotten.
I haven't read much Russian history, but I got the impression that things haven't changed that much since Peter the Great. Was there ever a period that lasted more than a single generation where things were better?
I mean, I had kind of given up on christmas, it just lost a lot of its magic as I grew older. But this year, for some reason, I had a feeling I might be reconnecting with some of that long-lost primal innocence of sorts. And now, I have a feeling that my feeling may have been right.
It's definitely good to be a little paranoid in your position. After you left Georgia, I heard about some Russians there who were taken from Georgia back to Russia by KGB or whoever, and I was like, "Holy shit I'm glad Roman got out of there!" Stay safe, my friend. You really deserve a nice life where you don't have to worry about these things, where you can heal from the multiple traumas you've been through at this point.
Thank you for doing what you do. Also, thank you for saying "killed" and not the abomination that is "un-alived." If ever a word deserved to be banned, THAT one would be it.
We don't truly realize how freedom of expression is critical for our well being while we enjoy it, I hear dissidents place it among primary needs of humans between food and shelter.
Without it a person essentially pretends to be someone else, the fake persona takes away genuine feelings and as a result the person gradually becomes less satisfied with life, giving a doomed impression of the world until more serious mental issues occur which lead to passive or direct ways for said life to end. So yes, technically it is a primary need as it leads to an early death effectively.
@@Alexandre-Marius-Jacob Freedom of expression in the USA is also under assault. Albeit in a more subtle way. It’s called Woke, invited campus speakers are often greeted either an angry mob trying to shut them down. Cancel culture is there to cancel anyone who disagree with current liberal orthodoxy. But the latest US election has done damage to the Woke Cancel culture crowd. Go Woke Go Broke is starting the counter the authoritarian leftist.

You left Russia 3 years ago. I know it's not the same, but I left my home state of Florida 3 years ago for Oregon. It is weird to live somewhere else for so long and watch things develop from afar, especially when everyone else in the country seems to all have certain views on my state. Also, I can relate to that paranoid feeling living in FL, but about guns. I didn't realize how diligent I was in regard to possible mass shootings until I moved from FL to a much less gun-toting state. I know several people who were in the Parkland shooting, someone who lost a loved one at the Pulse shooting, etc. and these traumas have had effects on how I live my day-to-day life. Until my Oregonian friend noticed, I had no idea that I tended to walk along the sides of hallways instead of the middle. I hang out near columns in large rooms. These are all ways to avoid getting shot. I still always make sure I'm aware of all exits whenever I enter a building/room. I still have a bit of this paranoia bv I'm still in the US, but I feel a lot safer in Oregon. I hope Portugal is treating you well ❤❤

Honestly I think the biggest point should also just be stability. Litearly anything can happen in countries at wars, for example the Wagner coup attempt. Theres also questions on how the Russian economy will be impacted by going into a total war economy when peace time does finally come, made worst by a shrinking population and etc. Due to the war, theres just too many economic concerns and it just makes more sense to move to a country who's economically more predictable.

You did the right thing man, and I’m sorry for what your country and people are going through. I pray that things will get better for Ukraine and for the good Russian people living under Putin’s tyranny.
I pray for my people too, who are also the neighbour of a tyrannical self-appointed ruler. I'm willing to be a welcoming beacon of hope, so long as our own customs & lifestyle be respected in return. I have no irrtational fear of anyone - as most, if I'm scared of someonme it's usually for a reason. I just think there's so much our cultures could share, but lifting the veil would be a good start. I guess I'll just have to wait for my government to enforce the ban.

My family fled the USSR in the late 70's after the communist regime rounded up over 80% of my entire family and "disappeared" them (gulags, work camps, never heard from them. Presumed all dead. Even with the fall of the Soviet Union we only found a few of them, died in labor camps according to records). Thankfully I was born in Canada and never had to live it.. but Russia is a nation of misery. It has never known real freedom, it is a nation of autocracy, dictators and brutality. It always has been and nothing about it's history since the fall of the USSR makes me believe it will be any different in the next few centuries to come. It is a miserable dump, I visited it once in 2010 and hated it and thanked my parents for fleeing that shithole.
The USSR had gulags in the 70s? I thought Khrushchev got rid of them in his whole Destalinization era. Then again he did still send in the tanks into Hungary so i wouldn’t exactly call him progressive by any means.
@@therealspeedwagon1451 It is Russian mentality to never address a problem as if it was a problem. They address the perception of problems. Gulags were useful. They provided the state with free labor, which is more efficient than expending a bullet. So when the politicians in Moscow thought gulags were not en vogue any more, something was done about it. Namely saying they had been abolished. A few probably were, to have some evidence. But they are still there today. Navalny died in one.
@@therealspeedwagon1451 The KGB was still 100% active, regardless of what anyone in the Party said about gulags. My family was nearly wiped from the face of the Earth because my uncle spoke drunkenly at a pub in the presence of KGB agents and was critical / insulting towards the party. 43 members of my family rounded up within 2 weeks, vanished, never seen again. My father and mother fled through Ukraine to Poland to Brazil then finally Canada when they realized it was only a matter of time before the KGB came for them. After the collapse, my dad found the names of 6 relatives in "prisons" that were obviously gulags / slave labor camps. No other relative of mine that vanished that week were ever seen from or heard from again, not even after the fall of the USSR.

Hey Roman, thank you for speaking out the reasoning. I have left Russia almost three years ago too and in my conversations with Russians who did stay I find that they do not understand the rationale behind the decision to leave. They truly think people leave because of fear of being conscripted or because those who have left think they are too important for the state to arrest them. But the real and most important reason is to not cope with the distorted reality, not to adopt to the repressions, to avoid constantly challenging your own phyco protective mechanisms. It's as if Russia is always trying to break your inner core, and I can see how it does successfully break some of the people I know.

Ironically, I feel there might come a time, somewhere in the distant future, but within the very, very same galaxy as this one, where large swaths of people who live in privleged countries, like Canada, might suddenly begin to consider migrating to 'defectory-deposit' countries like those in that region, all because of the warmer climate.
Congratulations on 3 years of success. No stopping now. Your frog in the water, bit by bit analogy, mirrors my thoughts on what we have after events of the last 10 years here. FELIZ NATAL Roman! 🎄

One where you can stand up against corruption and tyranny without being beaten down and where your social democratic values are seen as normal. If only the same could be said about America.
Roman. I strongly suspect that a great many of those "gulag jokes" were not jokes at all. Given the history of Russia and the situation for the last three years or more they are deadly serious. Perhaps they were comments made by people like me whose father had to escape from Czechoslovakia by hiding in a pile of coal on a goods train going out into Germany when the Russians took over at the end of WWII. Subsequently becoming a refugee with nothing in England. You were not paranoid. You were actually in a dangerous situation. Anyway, all the best for the future It worked out well for my dad, I'm sure it will for you.

I like that this vlog is mostly just a vlog, you talking about your motivations, thoughts, feelings, worries, hopes. It's not trying to be an amusing video, just a heart-to-heart. Thanks, Roman. :-) Glad to see you talking openly. Hope you'll have a good first Christmas in Portugal and in the EU.
Roman, it’s been a pleasure watching you over the years.
You’ve grown into a fine young man. Keep speaking truth to power and never lose your sense of humor and humility. Enjoy the EU. They are lucky to have you.
He is truly a great asset to Portugal :)
babe wake up new NFKRZ video!!!
Hopefully, Georgia won't go downhill like Russia. 🇬🇪
The same thing is happening in georgia any work that has litterally anything about homosexuakity is being banned the russian transparency law the goverment stopped negotiations with eu and i hope you cover it one day because not many people are talking about it outside of georgia
Thank you for your openness. ❤❤
I am very sorry for you and I wish that soon there will be a Russia in which you want to live and act as a political person ❤❤
Madd love NFKRZ, you're more American than most Americans. ❤❤❤
I don’t have anything new or insightful to say, but We’re glad you got out while you did. Have a happy holidays. 🎄
damn roman it’s been three years already??
Nearly.
Omg what happened to my life in that period
Very lovely christmas tree!! Green and minimalistic, very similar to how we decorate our tree in Norway
Love u r videos bro! Have a good one!
I’m glad you left , understand the paranoia you would have had. I wish you a merry Xmas in Portugal, glad you left Georgia also…as they have problems there with there government. I’m in New Zealand so our Xmas is normally hot so we spend it at the beach.
Grazie.
Prego ❤
We ought to empathise with those folk that never knew and possibly will never know how sweet freedom tastes.
Freedom like they are enjoying in Britain and Germany right now getting arrested for re-tweeting memes right? Lol 😂
@@js70371you mean in Russia?
@@trenaceandblackmetal5621 no I mean Britain and Germany. We only live under an illusion of freedom in the west. Say the wrong thing and you’ll face consequences for it.

Homie I’m from Texas, I can definitely relate to how you feel, now that I’m a New Mexican immigrant. Shit is getting wild everywhere, my grandfather killed the Nazis and an orange buffoon convinced my father to become one. Destroyed 150 years of tradition and essentially ended our generational family farm. I can relate to being a stranger in a strange land. I hope shit works out.
Thats so sad. Its like we never learn from the past
Dude you said it. I found Romans talk scarily relatable/predictable.
Spent a few years in New Mexico myself, beautiful place.
What orange buffoon?
Get your meds checked man, your Dad isn't a nazi because of who he voted for. He did fail to raise his son properly though.
What? Did your dad not say orange man bad?
Same for me. In March it will be three years since I fled ruzzia. The main reason for me except safety is ethics. I feel like I'm getting insane because of all the horrors ruzzian army is doing in Ukraine. I can't live in that atmosphere
Glad you were able to get out
Sooooo.... What's up for us Western Europeans?? Should we be worried about the Russian Army or what? And btw.... Didn't the Ukraine government also committed horrors against Russians???
It is all the same weight on the scale , innit?
@@Trip4manNo, they didn’t.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 yes they did but who cares it was russians
Just get to Canada. Its not perfect but you're welcome here and people need to hear you here. Lots to see and do and youd be great for tourism.
You are talking about something very simple, yet absolutely huge. Freedom.

It's so weird, following your videos for the last 5 or 6 years, seeing you go from talking about KSI, Logan Paul, Andrew Tate, whatever random topic, and seeing all the ways your life changed until today... It's insane
Yeah Happy Xmas to you Roman, and all who have left Russia for a better life out of your conscious objection to state terror, like the other TH-camrs like Natasha, The Depressed Russian, etc in Georgia ( hope they are well with all that is going down there at the moment ) .... Slava and Long Life to these Brave Heroes !!!
Thanks for rhe video Roman. I've sometimes been critical of you but it's nice to hear that you're feeling safer.
Glad you are doing better Roman. Hopefully next year will be less stressful for you amigo!

Some of my favorite Russian content creators have disappeared.
Some not only from the internet
Disappeared? Or ‘disappeared’?
Which ones?
They might re-appear somewhere in the arctic. They seem to have a fondness for the penguin's power. And the cold weather, of course.
@@rigelb9025more like Siberia at a labor camp.
I understand why you did it. The situation in Russia is quite tense right now. There are many prohibitions. The annoying war with Ukraine. Of course, living here is quite difficult. I am very sad to see what Russia has become. I just hope that someday the war will end and Russia will change for the better.
What do you mean what Russia has "become" ?!?
Russia hasn't changed since Peter the Great.
Just electricity and Internet we're introduced. That's it.
It's still the same Russia as under Nicolas II. !!!
The government has all the power and the ordinary people are brutally oppressed by the well connected thugs in the capital city.
What was "Bread, peace and Land" ??
Oh, right.
Russians outside of the large cities still got no bread, no peace and the land was property of the CPSU.
😂😂😂
So absolutely no change since the Tsar abdicated.
Oh wait, the flag was red for some decades. This was the difference.
The only difference.
The title "Tsar" was just changed to "General secretary" and then to "president"
Everything else remained the same.
The -aristocrats- -politburo-
--> government rules as long as they live in
-Tsarist- -Soviet- --> Putin's Russia.
So nothing changed
Aww Roman, don’t say nobody cares about you. I do!! And so do your followers. 😊 Have a great holiday.
Thanks and seasons greetings! Please go find a nice Portuguese Beach, buy a beer and relax- you made good decisions and you didn’t give up when it got difficult. I want you to also go back and watch your end of year video from 2022 and see how much your mental health has improved. It’s night and day- your anxiety was palpable - you are in such a better place now- Onward!
A beer is the last thing this guy needs if he looks like this at 26
Thanks
Ur welcome ❤
You don’t need to justify your actions, and I don’t think anyone would blame you for leaving,, we know you love your country just not the drop kicks leading it and driving it into the ground for their own agenda, time will pass leaders do die and things change.
Good luck to you 🙏😊
You seem to be a level headed guy and a likeable guy.(ps everyone who left made a statement.. only if everyone did that!! What a statement that would make!) ✊🏼
I left Russia in 2021, I hope you’ll find peace and happiness in Europe

😔😔😔
@@therealspeedwagon1451 after Stalin there was reform. But still a communist dictatorship is a communist dictatorship after all.
The NKVD was reformed and became the KGB. If you can call it reform.
Glad you’re safe and I hope the paranoia stays away
Hey Roman, thank you for speaking out the reasoning. I have left Russia almost three years ago too and in my conversations with Russians who did stay I find that they do not understand the rationale behind the decision to leave.
They truly think people leave because of fear of being conscripted or because those who have left think they are too important for the state to arrest them. But the real and most important reason is to not cope with the distorted reality, not to adopt to the repressions, to avoid constantly challenging your own phyco protective mechanisms. It's as if Russia is always trying to break your inner core, and I can see how it does successfully break some of the people I know.
Feliz navidad got me lol

He left Russia for a simple reason, he wanted to live, rather than being dead in Ukraine
Which seems a perfectly legitimate reason to me!
Life is more important than a war that’s not worth fighting for.
Putler has taken enough lives.
Confirming every word you said ❤ I left russia 5 yers ago and so happy now that I did it 😬
Congratulations on 3 years of success. No stopping now. Your frog in the water, bit by bit analogy, mirrors my thoughts on what we have after events of the last 10 years here.
FELIZ NATAL Roman! 🎄
Making money on the blood of Ukrainains is not success. He should be jailed.
Roman is Chad for leaving Russia and Georgia in the right moment
word lmao
A'm afraid for Portugal now
Yeah, honestly he must've seen where things were headed with Georgia too and could have also been why he also decided to dip out of there (well, aside from being denied Georgian residency status/being in a weird legal limbo).
Chad is Tyrone for leaving Africa for Haiti, only to end up in Ohio of all places.
Or he most dangerous post soviet real (not CIS governemts termin) extremist))
You’ve really come a long way Roman. We all wish you the best and that you can find a truly free and progressive country to live in. One where you can stand up against corruption and tyranny without being beaten down and where your social democratic values are seen as normal. If only the same could be said about America.
Not being used as a "meat shield" in Ukraine is a good reason to leave Russia.
Thanks for sharing your views. Hope you and your home country have a peaceful and happy reunion, with true freedom, in the near future. And I look forward to that future country rejoining the community of countries striving to improve the lives of people. Happy Holidays, Roman, however you choose to celebrate!
Feliz Navidad 🎄
