Family Guy is known to be a show that makes fun of different cultures, and Russia is no exception. There have been many Russian moments in Family Guy over the years, but recently in season 21 the show released entire Russian episodes: and they all take place in my Soviet hometown Chelyabinsk! As a Russian, I had to react to it. In this video we'll talk about how accurate it is, rate all the Russian jokes and look at Meg's life in Russia. Hope you enjoy and subscribe for more! Thx xoxo

As a person from Post USSR country myself , the only complaint i had for the episode's depiction of Russia is that Americans just assumed we live in the neighborhoods with private houses like they do , but the houses suck . While in reality , most people in Russia live in apartments .

Fun factoids: that film came on UK TV about a year ago, after Feb 22, and I started watching it largely because of Sean Connery's fantastically funny Glaswegian Latvian accent. But right at the start of the film he (captain of the sub) has to murder the KGB officer in his cabin... and (as you may remember) the KGB officer is called ... "PUTIN"! A few minutes later, Sean is talking to the other officers in the mess and says these words: "You'd better follow my plansh [sic - Connery] ... if you don't want to end up like Putin!". That was amazing enough.
Anyway it then came on UK TV AGAIN, about 2 months ago, and for that moment in the mess alone I started watching ... but to my amazement, when it got to the scene in the mess they actually CUT that line "If you don't want to end up like Putin". After seeing this YT vid I assume that must be because the TV channel managers were afraid of FSB squads arriving and firing darts at their necks.

That said, I have my minor problems with our depiction in the episode. Mainly that the country's architecture (can be seen from window when Randy calls to Finland) was more central european looking. Also finnish english-accent is usually depicted as either german-like or as russian-like (german-like in this episode) whereas finns speak with more destinct accent since finnish isn't indo-european language. Also, what native english speakers would perhaps call finglish, finns themselves call 'rally english' (named in honour of finnish WRC rally drivers, look up 'up to the ass of Timo' from TH-cam for accent reference). Yeah, to feel and to smell (to smell a smell) is literally the same word in Russian. There is a distinct verb for to smell, but what it means is to breathe the air near something on purpose of smelling the smell of it (doesn't translate too well to english). I think, it comes from how we learn non native languages, we essentially start from first thinking of what we want to say in our native language, then translate it to English and only then say it. Takes some practice to start forming ideas right away in English. I don't have this problem though, probably because I was a bit shy to speak a language I barely knew and because of it had predominantly listening and reading practice with almost no speaking or writing practice when I was starting to learn english

First time I ever heard the Russian Anthem was while watching The Hunt for Red October (really awesome film that was probably banned in Russia because it was about a Russian submarine captain and his officers who attempt to defect to America with the latest Russian first strike nuclear sub). At one point, they all started singing, and their singing slowly melded into a professional men's choir singing 4 part a Capela. I have no idea what the words say, but the music really is top tier.

It's kinda similar to the 'спальный район' or 'bedroom suburb', densely filled with 'kruschyovka' tenements from 1960s. Literally every post-Soviet city or town has one or more of those.

My grandma had carpets on the walls and we're not even close to being from a Soviet country haha. We are from Switzerland but our part of the country used to be very poor until the early to mid 20th century and there's a few similarities with eastern countries because of it like the widespread use of sunflower oil and rye products, beets are also a big thing here since that's how we used to get all our sugar. Some aspects of the culture too like old ladies used to wear headscarves

@@karlwalther It is socialistic. You could even say communistic. Tge text would actually be alright if the government of the "DDR" (=East Germany), which declared itself to be socialist, had not done certain things such as having people spied on by the Stasi, forbidding people to travel to a Western country such as the "BRD" (=West Germany) (i.e. possibly to their relatives) and trying to abolish Christianity. Didn't people also die of starvation in the Soviet Union when Stalin was governing it? I am really not a Nazi, but communism and socialism always have a bitter taste for me. The reasons mentioned above are only my personal reasons. I am well aware that there are socialists in the world that are not like the "DDR"-government or Stalin. And besides, I think it is possible that there are even more reasons not to like socialists and/or communists.

Rug on the wall is a pretty central Asia thing we had those in the old times in the Turkey too(It is a tradition that came from our Turkic ancestors). It has practical reason for it too basically heat insulation and it was working pretty okay. We have different patterns and thickness for wall rugs tho. Since real rugs is pretty heavy for the wall and painting like depictions works better for walls rather than symmetric patterns. Nowadays it is seen as a tacky thing but it is because they are not many who produce new modern patterns that fit modern furniture since there is no demand.
