@@justtrustash Thank you for your reactions! You are a brilliant couple! I am sorry but I have a question: where did you get these posters? They are awesome!
Gandalf did actually die. But he's an immortal entity, known as a maia (kind of like an angel, under the "archangels" called the Valar. Who are under the one god, Eru Iluvatar) He existed before the creation of the world, and actually helped create it. He was sent to Middle Earth to oppose Sauron, along with 4 other Maiar (Saruman the White, Radhagast the Brown and two Blue Wizards) They were all disguised as old wizards, and were known as the Istari, the Order of Wizards. The reason why he was sent back was because he's still working on opposing Sauron, and Eru recognized this. Also, the battle between Balrog and Gandalf took 10 days. They plunged into a deep lake in the depths of the mountain, which Gandalf later said was cold as the tide of death and almost froze his heart. They fought in the water until finally the Balrog fled into dark tunnels, where the world was gnawed by nameless things, older even than Sauron. Gandalf pursued the creature until it led him to the spiralling Endless Stair, and they climbed it until they reached Durin's Tower in the living rock of Zirakzigil, the pinnacle of the Silvertine, above the clouds. There they fought, until at last Gandalf threw down his enemy, and the Balrog broke the mountainside as it fell. The swamp with all the dead bodies is called the Dead Marshes, it was a battleground during the War of the Ring that you saw in the very, very beginning of the first movie. The floating corpses are all illusions, sometimes entrancing people who pass through the marshes (which is what happened to Frodo). (IIRC none of this is explained in the movies so these aren't really spoilers)
All true except a lil tiny clarification. Gandalf is not a Maia himself. Or to be more accurate he doesnt have Maia powers. The actual Maia (his name is Olorin) was send to middle earth but he became a mortal human and thus becoming Gandalf. The difference is that Gandalf doesnt have the Maia powers he had when he was Olorin and that is why he is not as strong as Sauron who is also a Maia but he didnt become a human. Sauron just pure Maia...
@@panagiotisgeorgiadis2613 slightly inaccurate. He doesn’t have his full Maia powers, but, he’s not transformed into a human, rather, is placed into a human-like body. You were close, and you had the basic idea, but we Tolkien fans love to split our hairs.
Fun fact: Andy did that entire 41:54 Gollum scene in ONE WHOLE TAKE, switching between the personalities in a split second. It is the best acting of the entire film. They followed his acting to the letter for that scene, and just placed the digital Gollum over the top (since it was just Andy acting in a green suit on set by himself).
I don't know how legit this is, but I think that scene was only added because they were doing some technical testing or something and the concept just turned out so well they decided to put it in the movie.
Want to know what makes it even more heartbreaking for me? That's not a Jackson/Walsh/Boyens line at all. Bernard Hill asked them to include it because it's something a bereaved parent once said to him and he couldn't forget it. (And like Théoden, Bernard has only one child; his son, Gabriel, was with him on set while this was being filmed.)
@@sethrivers5303 I think it's from 911 incident that they take that context. They heard that from 1 of the parents of the 911 victims. 'No parents should bury their children.'
@@justtrustash - Smeagol wasn't a hobbit, but he was a similar creature who lived somewhere else. He was probably 1000 years old or more. He'd had the ring for a long long time. That's why he didn't die and looked like that. His friend found the ring in the river where it left Isuldur and he was killed by orcs. But it's unclear how much time had passed. Isuldur was 3000 years earlier. Smeagol's friend found the ring and he murdered him for it. I don't think even Gollum knows how old he is.
@@KenjaTimu Smeagol was indeed a kind of hobbit, technically a Stoor, which was one of the three early kinds of hobbits who preferred river regions, and he is recorded as 589 years old at the time of the War of the Ring. Smeagel's friend was his cousin Déagol. The ring spent 2 and a half thousand years in that river, silently waiting to be found.
@@KenjaTimu, as others have pointed out, Smeagol was an older version of a Hobbit that lived by a river, and murdered his cousin Deagol because he was easily corrupted by the One Ring; it was 2500 years after Isildur was slain, 500 years before Bilbo came along, and another 60 years until Frodo was given the Ring
Frodo is compelled to see a way back for Gollum, because he's terrified of suffering the same faith. That's why he's lashing back when Sam says there's nothing bot deceipt and trickery in Golum, because the implication is that that's all that Frodo will become as well. It's one of the big tragedies in these movies that Sam doesn't realize Frodo's fear of succombing to the ring.
Thats why he said to Gandalf that it was pitty that Bilbo let him live he is so scared of changing becoming someone, something else and ironically the burden and the time pssing along with the jeourney itself change him even without the ring playing role
I see it more as Sam has no tolerance for evil, and responds harshly against Gollum. In his eyes Frodo is good, and he isn't really acknowledging the corruption. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@behindzerosp no, actually, when Frodo said it was a pity Bildo didn't kill him, he says it with anger rather than sympathy, because all he had heard of gollum was bad and he also hadn't met Gollum at that point
The actor who played Aragorn literally broke his toe when he kicked that helmet. You're the first reactors I've ever seen to notice the real pain he experienced! Great job. Enjoying all your content since I found your channel.
Makes me happy he's finally a household name thanks to The Boys. People always talk about Homelander, and he is a great character and Antony Starr is a great actor, but to me Karl Urban as Billy Butcher steals the show.
"I love that they all turn together." So some more book knowledge for you: the reason why the riders of Rohan switch directions so quickly, and why they are so initially hostile is because Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are wearing the elven cloaks from Lothlorien, which make them really difficult to see, so the riders didn't notice them until they called out. But Rohan is all Plains, so people should not be able to sneak up on them like that because they can see for miles across the flatlands. When they said they had come from the lady of the wood, Éomer had heard all of the same stories Gimli had about the "elf witch," and said something unflattering about Galadriel, which is what made Gimli hostile because he's totally smitten by Galadriel, and that's what prompted "I would cut off your head, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground." So it was a whole bunch of misunderstandings on multiple levels.
@@justtrustash Peter Jackson wasn't satisfied with the kocking scene so he had Aragorn keep redoing it and eventually he kicked it and broke his toe and filmed the whole scene with a broken toe. Nobody knew he had broken it until after they stopped filming that scene lol
Viggo improvised kicking the helmet and Jackson liked it so much he placed the camera down the hill and had Viggo kick it a few more times getting closer to the camera until the last take broke his toes! (Helmet was pretty much all metal) He stayed in character despite the pain and gave that amazing take which actually made it to the final cut. Props to Aragorn!
Yeah if you see all the other takes where he doesnt break his toe, his heart just isnt in it. Hate to say it because of the poor great actor, but I'm glad it happened to produce a more emotional scene
In the books, Aragorn sees Eowyn as a very noble, brave and worthy lady, he admires her , but he also feels very sorry and a deep grief for her infatuation with him because he can never return her feelings, he deeply loves Arwen to whom he has been betrothed for 60 years. ( yeah in the books Elrond does not oppose their marriage, as long as Aragorn takes his rightful place as King of Gondor, he actually loves Aragorn very much since he raised him as one his own sons)
The difference between Sam and Frodo's relationship and Merry and Pippin's relationship is that Sam is in Frodo's employment as a gardener and is also younger, while Frodo is older (he is 51 years old according to the books while Sam is 39), and Merry and Pippin grew up together since they were kids, they are more like brothers, an older and younger brother constantly messing with each other.
@@Petrosman there ages are mentioned in books. Or you are talking about movie. He was 50 when he started to go on his quest after his party and selling bagend

27:08 That's the interesting thing actually. A wizard's colors are based on their purpose. The white wizard's purpose is to be a protector and an enemy to the forces of evil. The gray wizard is to be a friend and advisor. When Gandalf was the gray wizard, he was to be a friend to the people of Middle Earth. But when he became the white wizard, his new task was to lead people and face evil. That is also why Saruman, the other white wizard, lost his power. It's because he failed his purpose and joined the enemy.
I think that's also why I always had a slight bit more affection/affinity for Gandalf the Grey. He was a sweet old grandpa unless you crossed him. Gandalf the White is still awesome, but a little less approachable.
34:50 "They build that sword just for this film!" Actually,...they Build EVERYTHING you see just for these Films... Took them nearly a decade to make all of this, every actor or extra you see on screen has his own sets of costumes, weapons and accesories.
You were actually right, he broke his toe kicking the helmet. Also it was Legolas that said blood had been spilt this night, Aragorn is just a master tracker.
Hannah, getting compared affectionately to Eowyn by the fans: ''That's quite nice actually'' Ash, comparing Eowyn to Arwen: ''Nah the other lady's well better, like by miles'' Ash POV immediately after: Warning you will die in 5 seconds
I’d much rather be compared to Eowyn, and if we’re going by looks- honestly, Hannah is so much prettier than either of the ladies ❤️ Also, Eowyn ends up with my favorite LOTR guy at the end (Faramir, of course). Total win.

Andy Serkis (Gollum/Sméagol) needs to be given the recognition he rightfully deserves. His work in the field of motion / performance capture as Gollum, King Kong, Godzilla & Caesar (you must react to The Planet of The Apes Trilogy; Rise, Dawn & War as it’s an emotional rollercoaster) has been pioneering. He fully commits to each character he plays & those performances are as incredible as any regular actor.
Did...did you just _guess_ the "Viggo actually broke his foot there" story? Its sort of a joke that no LOTRs fan can watch that scene with someone without telling them about that, and you _guessed_ it. Im legitimately subbing for that.

I've watched these movies - and reactions to them- dozens of times. I have never laughed so much watching them as i did during this video! Hannah's comments about the orcs and the two of you arguing about who you find attractive was hilarious. 😂 The blend of humor and astute observation is really great and unique. Good job!
Can’t wait to watch this later! I just discovered you with your Fellowship of the ring video and found you guys refreshingly hilarious. It was also nice to see just how much you got into the film and pieced things together. Can’t wait for the rest of your uploads for this series. ✌🏻🤘🏻
40:40 The problem with what Sam said, and why Frodo was so angry with him, was that if Smeagol can't come back, then eventually Frodo won't be able to come back. Sam didn't completely realize what he was saying and what future holds for Frodo. Frodo was dreading it, and the ring knew it, and made Frodo even more angry toward Sam.
It's funny you guys talking about the different English accents that they give to the orcs. I remember the BBC production of 'I, Claudius' from the 70's - the "lowly" Roman guards had (I think?) cockney accents and the Roman royalty spoke more 'posh' - but of course they were all supposed to be speaking Latin. (And I'm laughing picturing Hannah flipping through a family photo album and seeing a few orcs in her family tree. LOL!)
Since you’re so into the detail of the props and sets, I highly, HIGHLY recommend the special features in the extended editions. They are so good that I’ve seen them almost as many times as the movies themselves.
Ok last one. Frodo has to want to help Smeagol because He knows he is corrupted the same way as him. So if Smeagol can't get better than neither can Frodo. Thinking that way would have doomed Frodos quest.
Ash, a sharp witted, gorgeous redhead who has heart enough to have compassion for Gollum ... that's the very definition of a keeper! If you'd like the translation for the song Éowyn sings, it's called "Lament for Théodred" and it roughly translates to: "Now dear Théodred lies in darkness, most loyal of fighters. The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior; nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup, nor good hawk swing through the hall, nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard. An evil death has set forth the noble warrior A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld That noble cousin, who always held me dear Now is held in darkness, enclosed."
An ancestor of Aragorn - Elros - was known as a "half-elf" as they possesed both elvish and human ancestry; as such they could chose to be counted among the races of men or elves. in order to have the "free will" that elves lack he chose to be counted as a man, and lost his immortality but still possessed long-life... as the generations of his decedents came and went their life span did decline but remained longer than that of a normal man. Elros was also brother to Lord Elrond & Uncle to Arwen, meaning Aragorn is something like a 1st cousin 60 times removed to women he loves aswell as around 2500 years younger.
The Dunedain's long life also comes from having Numenorean ancestry as Numenor was gifted long life as a reward for helping defeat Morgoth during the First Age, but Elros's line I think lived even longer than the average Numenorean. So you are correct for the most part. The Silmarillion is the best! 💎💎💎
@@sunfurycommenting1013 Numenoreans are descended from Elros. Aragorn is a descendant of Elendil and Isildur who in turn are descendants of Elros. And of course, Elros is Elrond's brother. If you want to go even further, Elros and Elrond are the children of Earendil and Elwing. Elwing is descended from Beren and Luthien. Earendil is a descendent of Hurin. Tolkien has family trees of biblical proportions!
@@jkhristian Yes, it's insane how thorough Tolkien was, I've read the Silmarillion several times and lineages are a struggle to remember exactly. Not all Numenoreans are Elros's descendants but the line of Numenor's kings are. They lived longer than other Numenoreans though I'm 99% sure all of Numenor was given an extended lifespan. After Numenor fell, only the Numenoreans loyal to Eru were spared, and the race had to mingle with the men of Middle-Earth to endure, but it diluted the bloodline and decreased the lifespan of the Numenorean race. Aragorn is the one with the most intact ancestries but only lived a fraction of the lifespan of Numenoreans that existed in Elros's time. It blows my mind that one person put this incredibly complex worldbuilding together. RIP Tolkien, he's a bloody legend!

"Look at this sword!" It's badass. Notice the design is similar to a Roman gladius. This is probably because the Saxons adopted the design while serving as mercenaries in the Imperial Legion, while Rome still occupied Britain.
44:52 tbh aragorn was pretty young for a Númenorean, because the average lifespan of his people was 500 years at first, at the height of Númenor's reign, and then 300 for the Dúnedain (faithfull Númenoreans who stayed friendly to the elves and Valar, like Aragorn), and 200-100 for the Kingsmen (Númenoreans who turned against or stopped supporting elves and valar, llike the corsairs of Umbar). Fun Fact: Aragorn died of old age when he was 210.
You freaking Legends you actually dressed up with a budget. Also congrats at 9k. You are almost at 10k in almost no time just like I said. Keep up the utterly fantastic work.
Fun fact(s): Tolkien pretty much invented the idea of the talking, walking, humanoid trees (though others have done magical trees before). He loved trees more than you love cats, most likely. He was a massive lover of trees. He saw a play of Macbeth as a child, and he loved the part about the trees moving, but it was all a silly mistake, a trick. Tolkien was upset by this, and as the expert Tom Shippey said: 'Tolkien made them move, he really made them move.' There is also an idea that he based on the voice of Treebeard (head of the Ents, as it were) on his friend's voice -- C.S. Lewis' booming voice. Also, 'Ent' is Old English for 'giant'. It seems he took it from the form 'enta' in a poem about the Romans. You clearly get a sense of what he thought of the Ents and Rome: ancient and wise, yet slow to change -- and quick when they need to be. And very foundational to the world.
Indeed. Just that the Ent is something in the worlds ancient history that he brought back into his works that were to revive ancient knowledge and give england back it's mythlogy which is rich and vast and also he got ALOT from The Kalevala. and hearinging people sing from the Kalevala or even the old Welsh songs touches your soul like nothing else.
Shippey has joined the dark side as it where with his selling out to Amazon. watch Nerdtronic channel. he lays it all out and exposes every inch of Amazons shadiness.

Peter Jackson filmed all of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in his home country, New Zealand. The country also served as the backdrop for the three Chronicles of Narnia films.
Regarding your amazement for the weapons, armor and wardrobe: I was lucky enough to visit an exposition of real items used in making the movies, and was gobsmacked of the sheer quality and commitment poured on every single piece. I could speak for hours, but just to single out a few things: a real-life mannequin of Lurtz, the uruk archer that kills Boromir in the the FotR, it was massive and absolutely intimidating. The foam substance used to make the prosthetics, in conjunction with the make up, was so life-like you have to remember it was just a fantasy creature. And also Theoden's armor. Unbelievable craftmanship and detail. All the armor was decorated with scenes of horses and other motifs. Even in the INSIDE of the breastplate, the side you couldn't see with the armor on and faced toward the user, was full on decorated and embellished like you could never believe. A true armor worthy of a king of old indeed.
Okay mate, you win. You have the cutest elf in all the lands. Speaking of which, what are you guys wearing for the third movie? You gotta keep it going now, you spoiled me.
Sam and Frodo's relationship in the book makes more sense as Frodo is much older than Sam, and Sam works for Frodo as a gardener before leaving the Shire. So it's more professional than Merry and Pippin since those two are closer in age and one doesn't work for the other. Frodo also isn't pulling as much weight in the friendship as he did in the books; Frodo had much more tenacity and spirit in the books (for example: Frodo actually fights the Ringwraiths on Weathertop, bears the Morgul wound for over two weeks before he finally starts to give in, and he resists the Ringwraiths at Bruinen ["You will have neither the Ring nor me!"] instead of being mostly catatonic (though Arwen was pretty epic in the film so no complaints there even though Glorfindel was replaced). These are still great movies, but Sam and Frodo don't play off each other as well due to these details.

I've always thought that because Smeegol had the ring for 500 years before Bilbo found it, that the Golum personality is actually the ring.
@@justtrustash your girlfriend ( Samantha, that’s er name, rite? 😜) is hilarious, both of you are! Good reactions
Hobbit couple's therapy!
Aragorn is that special combo of man where every woman loves him and every man will follow him to the end.
Sort of like Connery or Bruce Springsteen.
So many people seem to have a problem with Eówyn’s singing at Theódred’s funeral but I think it’s heartbreaking and beautiful acting by Miranda Otto
I loved it too. You could see and hear her voice not trying to cry while singing for her cousin.
Thise people's opinions are meaningless, because they're wrong.
I love it also.
Ive literally never heard anyonw complain about that scene
I've always said somebody better chant that at my funeral
Still toxic but I get it.
Great job. Enjoying all your content since I found your channel.

overlooked like an invisible cunt
He's one of my faves in this series and as an actor. Been obsessed since he was Cupid 😂
Makes me happy he's finally a household name thanks to The Boys. People always talk about Homelander, and he is a great character and Antony Starr is a great actor, but to me Karl Urban as Billy Butcher steals the show.
"I love that they all turn together."
So some more book knowledge for you: the reason why the riders of Rohan switch directions so quickly, and why they are so initially hostile is because Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are wearing the elven cloaks from Lothlorien, which make them really difficult to see, so the riders didn't notice them until they called out.
Hahahaa you guys caught aragorns broken toe!! Also don't mess with Sam, sam is great! Be like Sam!
He’s great!! But I never knew about the kick being realistic 😂
@@justtrustash if you watch the hobbit trilogy after this you will see the massive difference between practical effects & Cgi.

@@justtrustash Same, honestly. When I watched these movies when i was like ... eleven years old, it really was the gay awakening (tm) for me
27:08 That's the interesting thing actually.
@@ohifonlyx33 one of the sole reasons why I wanted The Hobbit movies, but alas, Gandalf the Gray didnt save the movie, it helped though.

Fun fact: Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum, also does most of the pub bloke voices of the orcs.
Man needs an Oscar!! So talented
18:33 well you pretty much guessed it right. He actually broke his toe doing that and hence the scream of pain was perfect for the scene.
EDIT: And, a bit of relationship advice, Ash; if your lady asks you if you think she looks like some particularly beautiful woman, the answer is always yes ... and without hesitation too, especially as she really *does* look an awful lot like Miranda Otto
EDIT 2: And at around the 38 minute mark you had me rolling with genuine out-loud laughter :D. Fear not, there is not a man alive who hasn't put his foot in it one way or another ... and sometimes there are no right answers so you can't win either way.
By the way, the magnificent scenery in the films is New Zealand.

If you'd like the translation for the song Éowyn sings, it's called "Lament for Théodred" and it roughly translates to:
"Now dear Théodred lies in darkness,
most loyal of fighters.
The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior;
nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup,
nor good hawk swing through the hall,
nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard.
An evil death has set forth the noble warrior
A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld
That noble cousin, who always held me dear
Now is held in darkness, enclosed."
Can't believe you caught Viggos broken toe, nobody picks that up, brilliant!
@@sunfurycommenting1013 I love how Aragorn is literally descended from nearly all every great hero in Middle-Earth history.

"No parent should have to bury their child" 😢
18:35 Its funny you say that, He actually did break his toe on set kicking that helmet and they kept the take! :D
Josh!!! We’re nearly there..love you mate ❤️

I find it interesting when Smeegol/Golum is talking to himself with the two personalities going back and forth. I've always thought that because Smeegol had the ring for 500 years before Bilbo found it, that the Golum personality is actually the ring. Because the ring has a personality and a consciousness of its own that over the 500 years in Smeegol's possession, the ring's personality actually infused with Smeegol and became Golum. As much fun as it is to watch you guys react to this trilogy, I think you miss/talk over a lot of really good dialogue and key moments!
I encourage you to rewatch this series, off camera, and really listen and watch every scene.
You’ll enjoy it even more!
