Never gonna happen. Have you ever visited a po*n site? They ask you to verify your age by simply clicking "yes, I am 18" or "no, I am not 18". These social media sites will do just the same. This is a parenting issue, not a government issue. I police my child's online activity by using parental controls and actually engaging with him while he is online. He can't access Facebook, Instagram, TikTock or any other social media on his devices without my consent because I have a master password and total administrator privileges. It's easy to do.

Actually, this committee has passed, on a bi-partisan basis, 5 major pieces of legislation to address these issues. The problem is that Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, who controls which bills come before the full Senate for consideration, has refused to allow ANY of these bills to move beyond the committee. And the truth is all of these bills would pass the Senate if allowed. So part of the reason for these hearings, and for the grandstanding, is to put pressure on Chuck Schumer to allow these bills to be taken up by the Senate. The House has already indicated they will pass ALL of these bills as soon as the Senate does so.

There is NO “healthy relationship with social media and the internet”.
Social media subconsciously makes us compare our lives to the lives of others. Comparison is the thief of happiness/joy. Is it any wonder why people are more mentally/emotionally screwed up than ever before?
Use your brain and think! It’s not hard to see how poisonous this stuff is to EVERYONE(not just children) if you’re really paying attention.
Go read some articles on the negative psychological impact these things have on people of all ages(especially kids) and you’ll be singing a different tune.

That's seriously ridiculous. Facebook is a platform that enables people to communicate.
How people act is ultimately up to them. Do you see the government being able to stop all crimes?
Plus, Facebook is a free app. It runs on ad-revenues. At their scale, there are limits to how much they can monitor things.

Here’s another radical idea… well, two of them:
    1. Heavily invest in public schools and education, and make all kids attend extracurricular activities each evening and Saturday so they don’t have too much time to be bored, and eventually bring back British-style boarding schools and French-style “internats”. Mandate media literacy, rational use of the Internet, logic, rhetoric, geopolitics and IT in all public schools. Ban smartphones and social media within said schools and allow kids to go only on a school intranet for educational, vocational and professional purposes.
    2. Introduce a birth-giving permit and parenting license.
I think the first one is more realistic and constitutional.
All jokes aside… You just can’t expect corporations to “self-regulate”. History shows us they won’t. The government needs to step in sometimes.
I’m glad even the Republicans are starting to slowly get that. But the question is how much will those corporations lobby so that lawmakers keep their mouths shut.
