Fun fact: in chronological order, the three songs, stylo, on melancholy hill, and rhinestone eyes, are the three songs that set the story of the journey to plastic beach and every song after rhinestone eyes was (by the story) recorded at plastic beach
I remember when this video first came out I was mad that it was only a storyboard since they wouldn't fund the animated version. Now the storyboard lives in my head as the definitive version of the video and I wouldn't have it any other way, just Jamie's visual storytelling and Damon's music.

I cannot describe the feeling of listening to this song in the early hours of the morning, when my room is pitch black, apart from the red dot on my tv. The tiny red dot is the only thing my eyes have to focus on, and it starts to drift around. It almost looks like im looking at another planet or star from far away whilst floating through the black void of space. Sometimes, i swear i can make out the details of the surface of said planet or star...

Personally if I had to choose, I'd choose this storyboard video still. XD I agree with others that this would have made an amazing video. They could recreate it framed as a flashback sort of reminiscent tale of the Plastic Beach. It's funny, I think this got scrapped because it's large- and wouldn't fit neatly in between Melancholy Hill after Stylo. I think it's open enough to give it another look. :)

I don't know why but the story of Plastic Beach just stuck with me ever since I've discovered the album and the lore (never been a Gorilaz fan). There's something so deeply personal about this faze. No more care free rock star mundanity. It's time to face their fears, be as vulnerable as ever. There's such a painful beauty in this vulnerability filled with fear and hope.
I feel kind of upset that this was one of their last big parts of the story, since after all of this they gave up on the plan and decided to make everything go back to normal days 7 years later in Humanz, I just feel like there could have been so much more. phase 2-3 where my favorite (Demon days-Plastic beach).
@@benno._.72 Whether they weren't getting enough budget or inspiration, I think we as the fans should make some kind of petition or call for attention. Sad thing is, from what I've observed so far, the Gorillaz fandom seems to be separated by two kinds fans. One would be those who only listen to the songs, and second would be those who genuinely care about the story. I think the small portion of the latter don't call out to the creators enough, and I kinda wish they did. I would be happy if they were able to make even just a comic series. I'm fine if there wasn't a movie as long as we get to see the characters and their stories get concluded somewhat.

Jamie Hewlett did such a great job with the storyboard i cannot imagine the frustration of it being cut by the studios by fear of not making enough money.
It's ironic that the money which was going to be spent on this was spent on doncamatic which was made to be like all other music videos at the time which the record label thought would make them more money in the end the rhinestone eyes storyboard and song was more popular than doncamatic
Considering the weight of this song despite its pop sound, I'm really happy that Gorillaz decided to officialize the music video that this artist made & posted the storyboards of, it really fits. Adds a lot to the mythos around Plastic Beach, too

I'd like to see what it would have been animated, but you're right about it fitting the mood - if you listen to the instrumentals closely and the tone of the vocals throughout, it's actually incredibly simple, making it all the more powerful. Being a simple storyboard with...unnerving colors absolutely complements that feeling.

I'm not even kidding when I say I think about this every day. My group of writers friends and I are currently writing phase 3. I write for Murdoc, so my heart clenches in my chest every time it dawns on me that Murdoc doesn't know how to express himself or how to be a good person, unless it's in song form. His lyrics are so deep and meaningful and emotional and vulnerable. A side of him he only shows in the form of lyrics, because it's safe. If anyone asked him why he wrote the lyrics down, he could easily tell them "It doesn't mean anything significant to my life. It's a reflection of whatever the listener experiences while listening." In reality he's bottling everything up inside and pretending to be strong and stable enough to power through the day's

True, I study music and I sure can say Gorillaz' music are ahead of its time. 2000's are more on the alternative rock-rock sounds and only a few do electronic dance music or indie music. I think Gorillaz and Daft Punk were the only "popular" groups with unique genres. Not only that, their theme are a bunch of "animated" characters. no one knows who they are befor they hold on a concert and showed their true selves. I do think Gorillaz would click so much if they were 2017-recent group cuz boi EDM music is everywhere

I can't believe it has now been 14 years since the Gorillaz's released one of their greatest albums Plastic Beach. Time goes by fast I was nine when this album came out.
I remember the huge gap between Demon Days and Plastic Beach - the hype when PB came out was so real, but at the same time it was a bit of a question as to if they could follow up the success of DD. We had nothing to worry about - Demon Days and Plastic Beach are down in history as being *the* definitive new age alt-rock/pop albums for the 2000s.
Seeing this song live was an unforgettable experience. It was like I was transported to a whole new world. The choir was so enchanting and mesmerizing that I still get chills whenever i remember. Saw them in Brazil, 2018. Much love to you guys from the babd, thanks for the great memories ❤️

+Leon Zilla lol, I don't doubt it, but I don't really listen to the metal genre. Honestly, I'm more of an orchestral guy, myself (which can admittedly get pretty aggressive). Chucky Hagelo Oh, my word, you're right. No, but I was listening to Hurt by NiN the other day (and a couple other songs) and talking to my brother about what it meant to us. One of the interesting things we both noticed was Reznor's inflections while singing Hurt, how raspy and almost dry it sounded. And we speculated that maybe it was done on purpose to convey the idea that the singer is not some person sitting behind a mic in a recording studio with some angelic voice. It sounds more like what you'd hear drifting through an alley from the parched throat of a homeless person who'd lost everything. But the concept being portrayed through it is that what happened to the singer can happen to anyone and everyone. And it is - we're all being consumed by our greed, pride, and self-destruction. Anyway (sorry, I kinda ranted there), my point being - Trent Reznor is an incredible vocalizer and a brilliant musical artist.
Same I knew of their existence since I was like 11 but I didn’t like the music whatsoever but since my music taste has changed and I’m more open to music I ended up loving gorillaz in the future. So now I’m like a huge fan!

Sad thing is, from what I've observed so far, the Gorillaz fandom seems to be separated by two kinds fans. One would be those who only listen to the songs, and second would be those who genuinely care about the story.
I think the small portion of the latter don't call out to the creators enough, and I kinda wish they did. I would be happy if they were able to make even just a comic series. I'm fine if there wasn't a movie as long as we get to see the characters and their stories get concluded somewhat.

My group of writers friends and I are currently writing phase 3. I write for Murdoc, so my heart clenches in my chest every time it dawns on me that Murdoc doesn't know how to express himself or how to be a good person, unless it's in song form. His lyrics are so deep and meaningful and emotional and vulnerable. A side of him he only shows in the form of lyrics, because it's safe. If anyone asked him why he wrote the lyrics down, he could easily tell them "It doesn't mean anything significant to my life. It's a reflection of whatever the listener experiences while listening."

I can't believe it has now been 14 years since the Gorillaz's released one of their greatest albums Plastic Beach. Time goes by fast I was nine when this album came out.
I remember the huge gap between Demon Days and Plastic Beach - the hype when PB came out was so real, but at the same time it was a bit of a question as to if they could follow up the success of DD.
We had nothing to worry about - Demon Days and Plastic Beach are down in history as being *the* definitive new age alt-rock/pop albums for the 2000s.
Every time I hear this song at night in my room it sends the good kind of shivers down my spine

man.... this song is like 13+ years old now- the music video is so well made.. the fact it's told in a PMV style is pretty unique
Seeing this song live was an unforgettable experience. It was like I was transported to a whole new world. The choir was so enchanting and mesmerizing that I still get chills whenever i remember.

This is one of my favorate songs ever and I listened to it a lot when I dated my ex back I june, she made me the happiest I've ever been
I literally have no idea what is going on in the film but the song still slaps
The main take away is the Noodle is reunited with the band and their friends, Murdoc outsmarts the boogeyman, and Noodle gives Cyborg-Noodle the evil eye acknowledging her presence in the band.

+Leon Zilla lol, I don't doubt it, but I don't really listen to the metal genre. Honestly, I'm more of an orchestral guy, myself (which can admittedly get pretty aggressive). What I really mean is it's super impressive how these guys nailed that off-putting tone so well despite the fact that the singer's pitch barely fluctuates and he shows just about 0 emotion.

No, but I was listening to Hurt by NiN the other day (and a couple other songs) and talking to my brother about what it meant to us. One of the interesting things we both noticed was Reznor's inflections while singing Hurt, how raspy and almost dry it sounded. And we speculated that maybe it was done on purpose to convey the idea that the singer is not some person sitting behind a mic in a recording studio with some angelic voice. It sounds more like what you'd hear drifting through an alley from the parched throat of a homeless person who'd lost everything. But the concept being portrayed through it is that what happened to the singer can happen to anyone and everyone. And it is - we're all being consumed by our greed, pride, and self-destruction.
Anyway (sorry, I kinda ranted there), my point being - Trent Reznor is an incredible vocalizer and a brilliant musical artist.
The message of this song and this whole album gets more relevant with every passing day.
I mean, I knew Gorillaz from when I was kid but I never liked the songs, now this song is really good actually, I should hear more Gorillaz.
Same I knew of their existence since I was like 11 but I didn’t like the music whatsoever but since my music taste has changed and I’m more open to music I ended up loving gorillaz in the future. So now I’m like a huge fan!
