I dunno... that change was much needed from the introduction of the engineers update years ago. And now, when the player numbers are so miniscule compared to before, they start to change stuff... All that "Content" should have happened years earlier.
@@KleinMeme And here we have the "never satisfied, always complaining" Xenos species. It is a rare sighting but we seem to have encountered it in its feeding cycle. Planting negativity in an attempt to harvest more negativity for consumption. It truly is a different type of life that we share the galaxy with and therefore it must be corrected via the holy Gauss cannon and venerable AX movement of our people. But in all seriousness, grow up, like you said, it's been years, quit complaining and try seeing the bright side of things, I promise life is a lot less miserable if you do.
I do time to time. With a bigger pause after the Thargoid stuff, because not much new was involved. I loved the mysteries they invented years ago with the generation ships, the guardians... the settlements outside the bubble. Not much happaned in that area, only thargoid stuff that was mostly combat focused. What's with Raxxla? Does the story around the Guardians will continue? Anything new to explore? New Mysteries? That's stuff most players wanted and liked and still do. But new stuff is desperately missing in that area. Also the changes for modifications was a need as well. NOW they change it... but i guess better late then never. I really hope FDev now with a new lead will get the drift. But i only will believe that, when it happens.
Maybe now I will think about engineering my first Suit. That is a massively positive change in my attitude to engineering in Odyssey, like you would not believe. Thanks, great work putting this together for us as always.
Jamesons's crash site became more interesting with the addition of roughly double the number of com ports to scan, means the G4-G5 can be scanned within about 2 repetitions. The lower grades still worth scanning still take time. Cahed Anaconda has approc 3 times so many cargo cotainers to shoot, but so far i don't notice any increase in materials per canister. Whish mens you still end up chasing materials rolling all over the place! So still takes time. Jameson's at least has a new place to park your SRV where instead of 4 comports there are now 6 to scan without moving your SRV, s long as you park just right.... 🙂 Also worth trying, Instead of parking your SRV in the usual place behinfd the crashed ship ( inside the horseshoe shaped stone walls ), park to the left of the left side wall. You need to be a few meters away from the wall - drive towards the back of the ship (now on your righthand side) - you'll see a scan point almost level with the left back corner of the crashed ship. Park about 25 meters from this. In turret mode turn slowly clocckwise and you'll find a second scanpoint behind the wall ( your scanner detects it even though you can't see it.) Keep turning clockwise and a couple of meters from the end of the wall you'll find a third scan point - again hidden by the wall but scanable. Turn to face 180 degrees away from the crahed ship and you'll see another comport behind you - you need to be 49 - 50 meters from this; thats point number 4. Keep turning till yoy are facing 270 degrees from the crashed ship (to the left of where you started, close by there is comsport number 5 (should be about 13 meters away) Lastly between comport 5 and 1 there is a 6th comport (300 degrees?), this needs to be at 49meters from you. The trick is to find the correct distance between com ports 4 and 5, get it right and you don't have to move at all. You can now scan 6 coms per cycle. The grade 4 and 5 are collected within a couple of cycles (1 - 6) and its the grade 2 and grade 3 that take more time.... i generally stick it out till i have maxed them all before hitting Ray Gateway to spread them around and start again. When it gets boring do a crashed Anaconda run in between to pick up Raw mats. Krate with 2 SRV's and 59 LY range = Ray gateway 2 jumps and Crashed Conda 5 jumps from Jameson's. Just couldn't face Self destructing my ship - any ship Co. Iamstoer
That's an interesting challenge - scan them all without moving! I shall try.... Now that Jameson's Crash Site has sooo many encoded materials, there's no argument, it's the best place to go. I use the crashed Anaconda on Orrere 2B for raw materials, but after visiting the crystal chard forests, I'm pretty well stocked up.
Maybe a little too late now to be a game changer? We will see. Spot on with your visual presentation on the new grade rolls! This RNG rolling was stupid from the beginning!
I had planned on grinding every material a couple months back but only did it to like 10% because I was so utterly bored. I'm so thankful that my will wasn't strong enough then.
OOW WOW!, Artemis I hope we have future plans for that suit I really would like to see this. Also all these out of the bubble exobiology scans sure would be nice to see something come out of them. I don't want to be planting any ideas there. Has anyone seen a Thargiod? I mean eye contact, what do they look like do they look like something from Star Craft Brood War the Zerg or maybe Protoss? It would be cool to have the armor the Terran Marins had! OOW BIG! So, yeah Good North East West and South from Galnet this month!
What about Encoded Emissions? does the data node in there give more encoded data or is there more than one to scan? does encoded and degraded emissions also have more canisters? does scanning ships and wakes also give more data more often??? I wish they also made all blueprints including experimentals able to be applied remotely but cost double the mats compared to going to the engineer, and maybe the pinned blueprint you still get at the normal mats price as that's the worst part of engineering ships, the engineering bases run...
I am a veteran player. I will not buy the new ship (for ARX/Real money... I think that is what you mean?). I also think this update is ok. I would even say, it is _VERY_ OK. But that is just me. I am easily pleased, when something is - indeed - positive. ^^ o7

Personally i don't like their take on "buy ships for RL money". But i get that it's not a must have and they will be available later ingame for "free" (Ingame Currency). And that they need money to run the game. Seems the change in lead got a new gust of wind into the sails of Elite... hopefully? I really really hope they will get back to their routs. The game lacked nice content for way to long. The Thargoid stuff i mostly saw as filler content. It needs new mysteries, more story, more stuff to explore... the earlier years were the best time, in my eyes. Now reducing the mats grind was also a needed change for YEARS. I really hope that they don't slow down again on it and bring up some good marketing as well to get the gears working. It got so much potential and is one of the few really good Space Sims.
Honestly, though welcoming any improvements, I am a little disappointed that that they mainly took a changing the numbers in a spreadsheet approach - especially by just increasing the numbers of mats in places and how much we can carry. Why not just REDUCE the numbers required instead? Backpacks storing 30 shoebox sized things was already immersion breaking. I'd have preferred reduction of numbers required, and most importantly better material trading RATIOS, and the ability to refund of some materials when selling engineered kit... aka recycling. That would have been just as easy - and with all those old FSDv1 engineered modules sitting in storage waiting to sell it would have been perfect to implement this recycling! If we wanted to get actually serious I would have preferred new missions, new features like redesign the old Horizon's era surface sites (and surface missions sites) to be more scavengable for mats in new ways (cutting open panels of wrecked ships and the various big buildings, mission quests from engineers to get the materials and unlocks, etc. Also, what about when the war ends? The Thargoid war mat rewards seems like an odd time to roll this out given that the war is likely over soon.
This is too much. Going from 3 to 6, and 5 to 10 would have been enough. Knowing how/where to find materials was one of the skills you needed to master.

Used to be, the dreadful old days of taking a 10/15 hours to find 30 Tin or Selenium are long gone, all changed with the Crystal Shards and especially the Brain Trees. Nowadays, if you know where and how to look, every material (barring a few exceptions like Datamine Wakes or Improvised Components) is relatively easy to find. It needs to be somehow challenging, to reward experience. I mean, what is the point of a sandbox like Elite if you can get everything in no time, or get your ranks in a day? See what happened with credits, today they don't mean sh... and you see CMDRs with a Cutter after a week of playing. I don't really care about all that because I've already done all the grind, but the progession was part of the fun I had with the game, like any game based on XP. I unerstand they want to make the game more accessible, and I support it, but it has to be balanced, and one thing is certain: they can't go back once it's done. But we'll see how it goes.

Speaking as someone who started playing this game in last quarter 2022, I'd say it's just in time. New people are still playing and these changes to engineering address many of the complaints made by long-term players. Should they have made these changes earlier? Absolutely. But the fact that this is an important step in the right direction, even after so many years, looks to me like a really positive indicator of FDev's confidence in Elite.
Whow Without this crazy amount of grinding we all made, maybe we finally start to "play" Elite ? Countless hours offered to new players. Please M. FDEV, let's make removable the Odyssey engineering too. Why only ships would be concerned? Once a suit/weapon is modded, no way to change it. Wanna try a recipe ? Grind and try. Not satisfied ? Sell it and do it again. Stupid ? Yes it is. This remains Elite...🫡
The reduced engineering grind is the best new I've heard from this game for a long time. I can't wait.

Jamesons's crash site became more interesting with the addition of roughly double the number of com ports to scan, means the G4-G5 can be scanned within about 2 repetitions. The lower grades still worth scanning still take time.
Cahed Anaconda has approc 3 times so many cargo cotainers to shoot, but so far i don't notice any increase in materials per canister.
Whish mens you still end up chasing materials rolling all over the place! So still takes time.
Jameson's at least has a new place to park your SRV where instead of 4 comports there are now 6 to scan without moving your SRV, s long as you park just right.... 🙂
Also worth trying,
Instead of parking your SRV in the usual place behinfd the crashed ship ( inside the horseshoe shaped stone walls ),
park to the left of the left side wall. You need to be a few meters away from the wall - drive towards the back of the ship (now on your righthand side) - you'll see a scan point almost level with the left back corner of the crashed ship. Park about 25 meters from this.
In turret mode turn slowly clocckwise and you'll find a second scanpoint behind the wall ( your scanner detects it even though you can't see it.) Keep turning clockwise and a couple of meters from the end of the wall you'll find a third scan point - again hidden by the wall but scanable. Turn to face 180 degrees away from the crahed ship and you'll see another comport behind you - you need to be 49 - 50 meters from this; thats point number 4. Keep turning till yoy are facing 270 degrees from the crashed ship (to the left of where you started, close by there is comsport number 5 (should be about 13 meters away) Lastly between comport 5 and 1 there is a 6th comport (300 degrees?),
this needs to be at 49meters from you. The trick is to find the correct distance between com ports 4 and 5, get it right and you don't have to move at all.
You can now scan 6 coms per cycle. The grade 4 and 5 are collected within a couple of cycles (1 - 6) and its the grade 2 and grade 3 that take more time.... i generally stick it out till i have maxed them all before hitting Ray Gateway to spread them around and start again.
When it gets boring do a crashed Anaconda run in between to pick up Raw mats. Krate with 2 SRV's and 59 LY range = Ray gateway 2 jumps and Crashed Conda 5 jumps from Jameson's.

That's an interesting challenge - scan them all without moving! I shall try.... Now that Jameson's Crash Site has sooo many encoded materials, there's no argument, it's the best place to go.
I use the crashed Anaconda on Orrere 2B for raw materials, but after visiting the crystal chard forests, I'm pretty well stocked up.

What about Encoded Emissions? does the data node in there give more encoded data or is there more than one to scan? does encoded and degraded emissions also have more canisters? does scanning ships and wakes also give more data more often???
I wish they also made all blueprints including experimentals able to be applied remotely but cost double the mats compared to going to the engineer, and maybe the pinned blueprint you still get at the normal mats price as that's the worst part of engineering ships, the engineering bases run...

I am a veteran player.
I will not buy the new ship (for ARX/Real money... I think that is what you mean?).
I also think this update is ok.
I would even say, it is _VERY_ OK.
But that is just me.

Personally i don't like their take on "buy ships for RL money". But i get that it's not a must have and they will be available later ingame for "free" (Ingame Currency). And that they need money to run the game.
Seems the change in lead got a new gust of wind into the sails of Elite... hopefully?
I really really hope they will get back to their routs. The game lacked nice content for way to long. The Thargoid stuff i mostly saw as filler content.
It needs new mysteries, more story, more stuff to explore... the earlier years were the best time, in my eyes.
Now reducing the mats grind was also a needed change for YEARS.
I really hope that they don't slow down again on it and bring up some good marketing as well to get the gears working. It got so much potential and is one of the few really good Space Sims.

Honestly, though welcoming any improvements, I am a little disappointed that that they mainly took a changing the numbers in a spreadsheet approach - especially by just increasing the numbers of mats in places and how much we can carry. Why not just REDUCE the numbers required instead? Backpacks storing 30 shoebox sized things was already immersion breaking. I'd have preferred reduction of numbers required, and most importantly better material trading RATIOS, and the ability to refund of some materials when selling engineered kit... aka recycling. That would have been just as easy - and with all those old FSDv1 engineered modules sitting in storage waiting to sell it would have been perfect to implement this recycling!
If we wanted to get actually serious I would have preferred new missions, new features like redesign the old Horizon's era surface sites (and surface missions sites) to be more scavengable for mats in new ways (cutting open panels of wrecked ships and the various big buildings, mission quests from engineers to get the materials and unlocks, etc.
Also, what about when the war ends? The Thargoid war mat rewards seems like an odd time to roll this out given that the war is likely over soon.

This is too much. Going from 3 to 6, and 5 to 10 would have been enough. Knowing how/where to find materials was one of the skills you needed to master.

Used to be, the dreadful old days of taking a 10/15 hours to find 30 Tin or Selenium are long gone, all changed with the Crystal Shards and especially the Brain Trees. Nowadays, if you know where and how to look, every material (barring a few exceptions like Datamine Wakes or Improvised Components) is relatively easy to find. It needs to be somehow challenging, to reward experience. I mean, what is the point of a sandbox like Elite if you can get everything in no time, or get your ranks in a day? See what happened with credits, today they don't mean sh... and you see CMDRs with a Cutter after a week of playing.
I don't really care about all that because I've already done all the grind, but the progession was part of the fun I had with the game, like any game based on XP. I unerstand they want to make the game more accessible, and I support it, but it has to be balanced, and one thing is certain: they can't go back once it's done. But we'll see how it goes.

Speaking as someone who started playing this game in last quarter 2022, I'd say it's just in time. New people are still playing and these changes to engineering address many of the complaints made by long-term players. Should they have made these changes earlier? Absolutely. But the fact that this is an important step in the right direction, even after so many years, looks to me like a really positive indicator of FDev's confidence in Elite.
It's certainly reduced the lifespan of all those youtube videos complaining about the 'grrrrind'

Whow Without this crazy amount of grinding we all made, maybe we finally start to "play" Elite ? Countless hours offered to new players. Please M. FDEV, let's make removable the Odyssey engineering too. Why only ships would be concerned? Once a suit/weapon is modded, no way to change it. Wanna try a recipe ? Grind and try. Not satisfied ? Sell it and do it again. Stupid ? Yes it is. This remains Elite...🫡
