  • The Old Testament story of Jonah gives us insight into understanding the state of the Catholic Church in our own day.

If the Church is fleeing God’s call and turning its back on its given mission, is it really the Church? According to Vatican I, such a defection of the hierarchy, papacy, and general governance is apparently not possible and any seeming contradictions and changes in teaching must be obediently assented to.

In a strict theological sense, the Church cannot totally abandon its mission. Of course the Church cannot lose its Four Marks or completely fail. But I don't think this is supposed to be considered in that strict sense. We know that in any given era the Church can be more or less conformed to the ideal willed for it by Christ. To the degree it fails to conform, to that degree it is "fleeing" its mission. Because of the rampant confusion and aversion to what historic Catholicism looks like, I think it is a fair statement to say the Church is in a state of "flight" or "denial" regarding it's mission. But just as God would not let Jonah completely abandon his mission, so will God not permit the Church to completely fail. It will return, it will be restored, but only through the muck. Anyhow, this is just an allegory, it's not theology.

Concerning Vatican I, Cardinal Pie of Potiers rued the calling of this council. He was of the opinion that the Great Council of Trent closed the counciliar era and that ultimately, Vatican I could only result in buffooneries. Long after his death, he was proven right.
I agree with you that the Reformed Church of Vatican II is not the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. It is Many, Unholy, and certainly not Apostolic, having openly rejected many Traditions dating back to the Apostles. Rather, it is a diabolical veneer. And just because it is supported by the papacy does not change anything. As St Augustine said: "Wrong is wrong, even if everybody is doing it."
What many Catholics have trouble with is the distinction between the OFFICE of the Papacy and he who occupies the Holy Seat, the Chair of Peter. The Petrine Office cannot, and will not fail. But the occupant of that Seat can certainly err, and even attempt to draw the whole church with him- as we see in our day.
Many of the early saints and fathers and doctors of the church said unhesitantly that if even the Roman Pontiff were to transgress Apostolic Tradition he should be mightily resisted. St Athanasius did exactly that, and was "excommunicated" for several years. But he, not Pope Liberius, was vindicated in the end.
It has been the common opinion of the Fathers that the Great Apostasy spoken of by Saint Paul would include the papacy, and that Satan would succeed in installing an anitpope who would be the forerunner of the Antichrist, the "False Prophet" of the Apocalypse.
Is this what the 3rd Secret of Fatima is concerned with?

@@uscatholicam I think an overlooked issue is that Vatican I disallows the possibility for any sort of failure in the sense where we laity can’t judge Vatican II (or the changes and developments that accompanied/followed it) to have been a failure or a change in Church teaching. So to say that the Church “won’t completely fail,” misses the problem that Vatican I states the papacy can’t err in any way on doctrine.

@@uscatholicam i really liked the video. I like the reflection on it. As much as we want to get away God will aways find us. Sometimes we are stubborn or caught up with many things in life. But individually being members across the globe we can pray and serve in our parish. God bless you for the effort you put in.
