    The three phases of SnS usage:
    1: "This seems like a simple weapon that's good for learning the game..."
    2: "Now I'm ready to ditch the noob weapon and move on to a REAL weapon!"
    3: "I'M SO SORRY FOR EVER DOUBTING YOU, SNS-CHAN, PLEASE FORGIVE ME!"

    Gaijin...please man, I'm begging you, stop making all these weapons so appealing, I just got into lance and gunlance because of your content and now I'm gonna have to make a bunch of sword and shield sets....seriously though man thanks so much for this, it really gives players like me who want to try out blademaster weapons some great tips and your enthusiasm for the weapons becomes contageous.

      Good point XD that's the one thing I think monster hunter has over other hunting games in the genre like God Eater, all the weapons are enjoyable for pretty much anyone. I haven't found a single one thus far I hated using. The only game in this style that comes close to that is Tokiden, but I remember finding the timing on the fists really finicky so it's a close second.

      Navi The Fairy Charge blade is a great dane, and SnS is a chihuahua. You can totally gnaw some ankles to death with SnS. Especially you know who.

    • @robertbuckley8550
      @robertbuckley8550 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Navi The Fairy I wouldn't say that it isn't a beginner weapon, as at it's core it is THE best weapon to learn the game with. SnS is pure fundamentals, if you understand monsterhunter, and it's systems then the SnS starts to shine, which in return makes it a good weapon for teaching said fundamentals. There is nothing wrong with that.

    Probably one of the most underrated and underused weapons in the game. great guide gaijin luv it. Oh yeah and remember B R E A D A N D B U T T E R

    • @mstrswrd
      @mstrswrd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If I'm remembering correctly, the least popular weapon is, as always, Hunting Horn. The game will even tell you this when you talk to the First Wyverian. He also mentions that the most popular weapon is the Long Sword (they fixed the tripping!). I don't know if his info changes depending on what room you're in, but every single room I've ever been in has had those 2 consistent.
      I imagine SnS is decently low on the list, though, which is unfortunate, because it is a versatile weapon (and being able to use the slinger with the weapon out is just... outstanding).

    • @dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668
      @dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      mstrswrd They fixed the tripping?! Hot diggity!

    • @mstrswrd
      @mstrswrd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah. While it is possible to cause tripping, you are much less likely to do so, and basic attacks almost never do unless you smack someone center mass (Spirit Slashes will in general, though, even with just the tip). Which means you can attack a lot more freely than ever before.

      It's great. It has constant dps and it's great at applying status. The shield slam is literally one of the most powerful strike in the game and it KOs almost every time.

    Glad to see you put some tips about kushala and mounting too. People need to realize this lol
    Another great video Gaijin

  • @Leo_Noved
    @Leo_Noved 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Another cool thing about mounting with the Sword and Shield is that the triple strike is not just locked to 3 attacks. If you pause slightly between each hit when triple strike is up you can keep hitting it over and over and keep the mount going. I believe one of my better runs was triggering the triple strike sequence 3 times and ended up hitting the monster with that attack about 30 times(?) before it fell.

  • @IxRAINxPAIN
    @IxRAINxPAIN 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    A few awsome points of note as a long time sns user, the shield can't bounce off of monsters so it that's somthing that you are struggling with u can throw those in to help with that, and the charging back hop actually counts as a evade, so if you have the evade extended skill the hop gets longer and if have the evade window skill you can use it to dodge attacks, roars, tremors wile not stopping your combo and attacking the monster at the same time. BTW ty for advertising one of my fave weapons gijin, great work as always :)

    • @dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668
      @dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Umbra Draconum 21 I dodged a fatal diablos tail sweep. I had no such skills. Skills as in evade window skill and actual fighting skill lol.

    • @w1mark275
      @w1mark275 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another thing to mention is that since the shield does blunt damage, it allows you to freely deal cutting or blunt damage on monsters where most weapons usually only allow one damage type. Some monsters are more vulnerable to one type of attack when it comes to breaking armor parts, so you can adapt to whichever one is your opponent's weakness. I am honestly not exactly sure on the differences between cutting and blunt damage, but I believe that cutting attacks are more effective when damaging tails whereas blunt damage is more effective for damaging reinforced armored parts which often times deflect attacks if your weapon sharpness is too low.

    Great information! SnS is my favourite weapon and after 200+ monsters hunted with it I still learned cool things from this video!
    One quick tip: you can actually block Nergigante's dive. Sometimes is safer to block, specially when he decides to dive when you are under him. It's better to block towards his direction and take less than 10% of total HP in one hit than risk the superman dive in my opinion. You can also block the Diablos' burrow and take minimal damage.

    I´ve seen some people argue that they don´t play SnS because they don´t want to get used to being able to access all items on the fly, but those people don´t understand the weapon. The item usage is just the Cherry on top of a great kit and as someone who mains SnS but also gives almost everything a try from time to time I never found myself trying to use an item when I couldn´t or screwing up because I didn´t have the muscle memory to put the weapon away and use the item...

    • @Bagakoo

      ...wat? That has to be one of the ridiculous arguments I've ever heard about not using SnS...

    • @jasethemuss86
      @jasethemuss86 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People make the same argument for Lance and Gunlance... I don’t want to learn bad habits and block when I can dodge like a boss etc. Etc. At the moment I’m using Gunlance, Switch Axe, Charge Blade and Dual Blades and want to try out Hammer, Glaive and SnS and don’t find any problems with the different play styles and it won’t take me long at all to adjust.

      Darthplagueis13 i sheath my sns when using items except for pods cause the sns sheaths fast enough anyway and you can also run while using potions if you have your weapon sheathed

    • @Ketsuekisan
      @Ketsuekisan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      People also make that argument against Evade Window. It's a bad skill that only teaches noobs bad habits because they can't dodge without it. Despite the fact that it actually lets you play much more aggressively.
      With that kind of logic, you could say all armor skills and weapons teach bad habits, and the only way to learn good habits is to beat monsters with nothing but sumo slaps.

    • @taipenn2358

      Brian Graffloe I can't provide video proof so you're taking me on my word, but I've been able to attack in the same place as a Dual Blade user with tier one and it didn't stop me. Based on the description as long as the other hunter's attack doesn't make you actually fall it should protect you. I do the same thing with hammers.

    Excellent video, showcases exactly why I love SnS. I always feel safe with the mobility, and I can always resume the attack from anywhere at any time. It feels so relentless, like there's never any wasted time in the hunt. And if you want to hunt with a party and play the support role, the status weapons and Wide-Range ability let you do that too. I've tried to get into other weapons for some variety, but Sword and Board has so much built into it already that I always come back.

    Here a little addition to the Backstep:
    You can do it by holding Circle after a dodge.
    And here is also a little trick I found out by accident (don't know if it's intentional):
    If you dodge foward and pull the stick back while holding Circle at a specific moment, your char turns around before the Backstep (every direction dependend where the char is facing).
    If you do it too early, the char won't turn around before the Backstep.
    If you do it to late, the char will turn around but use a Shield Bash instead.
    This move is really great for a counter after dodging, but the timing makes it a bit unreliable, if you are a hectic player. ^^"

    After you won the mount and are beable to do the end hits. You can hit the monster 4times in the face with the shield if you stop to press the tripel strike button and start again Quickly after you stopt. Butt be warned, this will stun the monster for the first time and stop the last hit. This is the case for most monsters.

    I used the Charge Blade in MH4U and MHGen, and began using it in MH World but I ultimately switched to the SnS. I'm enjoying the immediacy of SnS over the build-up of the CB (which I loved, but it's just time for something new). I even went back to the Charge Blade recently and it wasn't the same. For now I'm hooked on the SnS. I appreciated this tutorial a lot. It taught me some things I didn't know like how to use guard to stand still and the Helm Breaker attack.

    This video made me wanna pick up the SnS when before it, I didn't even remember it was a weapon. I've been meaning to trade out my secondary charge blade for something a bit more nuanced. I thought about the SnS slightly before I saw this video, tried it out, liked what I saw and as soon as I thought that, I looked at the recommended screen, saw this video, used the weapon for a little while, and now after wrecking some monsters that'd give me a ton of trouble otherwise and even surprising me with it's usage against some monsters I thought for sure I would hate going against with it, SnS is now my secondary behind the Insect Glaive (I'm sorry but there's no topping my love for the IG.) So..... yea, thanks :D

  • @GadgetGabe
    @GadgetGabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this video is a few weeks old but you can also do a ledge vault by doing a backhop off a small ledge into an advancing slash.
    You can also chain vault attacks by angling your vault attack in a direction, then rolling toward the ledge after you land, which gets cancelled midway after falling off the ledge, then you’re set up to do another advancing slash and repeat the process in alternating directions. I find that’s the fastest way to mount a monster with SnS but it is pretty situational.

    Between the third shield bash and the additions to the charged slash and the spiral slash and the slinger and... gah, they made so many changes to this weapon that I love. It just feels so much more fluid and it turns some hunts into dances of death because of how easy it is to keep up with monsters and evade out of attacks you commit to.
    It took a while for it to become my main in 4U but in World, it's often really tough for me to switch to another weapon because it's so much fun. It truly is a swiss army knife.
    Or, er, axe in the case of the Girros sword!

      The noob status is really unfortunate because while the weapon has a low skill floor it also has a really high skill ceiling and it´s just a great feeling how much you get better with this weapon without ever being in a state where you can´t use it at all.

    • @helveticastandard7362

      The SnS has never been branded a noob weapon. Ever.
      You must be new meat along with that "community" you mention.
      SnS has always been regarded as a technical, high skill weapon. It's simple to pick up, but it's one of the hardest to master.

      sns has never been considered one of the hardest to master
      and it also has been branded as a noob weapon simply because it's bread and butter combo is easy to get down and doesn't require any special upkeep like IG with buffs or DB with stamina management. Also comes with a shield so you can avoid biting the dust quite as hard when you make a mistake.
      no matter how you cut it, it is a beginner weapon and it's skill ceiling is relatively low compared to a lot of the other weapons. The problem is that people for some reason act like this is a bad thing and it deters people from trying the weapon out.

    I've been waiting for someone who really knows the series well to do a video on SnS to see if there was anything I've been missing while playing with it. Then I happen upon your video the day after I finally discover the Helm Breaker. Gave me a chuckle.
    Anyway, one thing I saw you didn't cover, although people might be able to piece it together themselves, is that if you do the uncharged Advancing Slash from Backstep down a slope into the two jumping slashes, that can be a really good way to quickly rack up mounting damage. It's great in fights such as Legiana or Nergigante where you tend to encounter them in areas with a lot of slopes.

    Those last two tips u gave are so true. Can't tell u how many times people flash Kushala while it's inside of the tornado. And I've been seeing a trend lately with the "flash the mob while someone is mounted on it". That one especially sucks because with the diminishing returns factored in, the monster stays dazed for maybe 5 seconds, whereas the mob being knocked down via mount lasts quite a bit longer, it seems. Anyway, great video and I'm getting into sword and shield now. I've been more or less button mashing with it so far (feels completely different from GS) but this was a great guide.

    • @theshinwhisperer8279
      @theshinwhisperer8279 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't you just do a charge attack while it's knocked down? The final mounting attack almost never happens for me, and a full mount ends up in just a normal knockdown anyway without a final mounting attack, so if the monster was knocked down at the start of the mount and everyone else was able to add DPS instead of the 20-30 seconds of 1's then, well, that seems like faster damage to me. Not to mention that quite a few of the mounting attacks really aren't that great. Lance, IG, Dual Blades, and bowguns. Longsword is free meter if I remember correctly, but the damage is eh. Gunlance seemed kind of lack luster but I don't have a great GL set yet (Lance main).
      Now, I'm not saying people should flash. Mounting is a good time to do things for free, like sharpening or topping off health, but if someone is going into a hunt with the intention of killing something quickly then, against a flying monster, flashing does end up being faster. Don't flash land-based monsters though -.- While they do run around more, the whole mount leaves them pretty open to attack from the rest of the team and leads to a knockdown, so there really isn't any reason to ever flash.

    • @ThatOneDudeTo
      @ThatOneDudeTo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unless you're down to the wire for time (in which case there are a whole bunch of other issues with your team as a whole), there is no real need to flash pod when someone has mounted a monster.
      You not only waste a mounting opportunity, but also trigger Flash Pod's diminishing returns. I usually use mounting as an way to damage the parts I need to damage for guaranteed drops. Besides, sometimes you bring down the monster in the natural process of trying to set up that sweet finisher.
      On the topic of annoying habits, people have begun a trend of chasing down a dying monster like it owes them money. I capture quite a bit or have Mega Barrel Bombs ready to use on them. I can't use them well if someone forces the dying monster to re-engage.

    • @theshinwhisperer8279
      @theshinwhisperer8279 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, there isn't a need, but it is faster, and people like doing things in less time. Obviously not everyone wants to rush things, but there are people that do, because they might have to kill the same monster 20 times to get a ton of carapace or something. I don't see how them wanting to speed things up is any less legitimate than people that want to take their time.

      One thing I’ve noticed that’s worth trying to do, especially in Elder’s Recess. Make sure to pick up the crystal burst ammo (or other stunning ammo type), my friend and I have been able to cut immediately to our weapon’s finishing mount move (I used charge blade and he used hammer) after shooting Nergy ourselves while mounting. It’s worked for us 3 times in a row but didn’t work when I used the SnS, so idk if other people have tried it successfully or not.
      Definitely worth giving a shot though, seemed to help speed up our runs quite a bit :D

      @thanawatsudruangloet6450 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll have to agree with saironthis and markstache. Flashed down monster leaves a shorter opening with diminishing flash stun windows. I have ran a few hunts when the elder dragons enter its final phase and are attacking aggressively (ex. teostra's erupting stage, kushala's map full of tornadoes, nergigante's constant superman dives) where random hunters decide to flash down a mount and the team ended up failing the quest because they put themselves back at risk of fighting in a more unsafe situation. The small window of opportunity created from successful mount may not seem like much, however, it provided a safer opportunity. If the team failed the quest because some randoms decide it's a quicker hunt and ended up failing via carting, then the team just lost the 15 minutes spent hunting in a quest (even more risky with 1 faint conditions or when you have a teammate who cannot take hits like gunners). If the elder dragon migrated to its final stage and you still have more than 5 minutes to hunt, the team is doing fine because the monster is already below 1/3 of its HP. In that case, nobody should feel rushed. When hunting online, players should think about the team dynamics. Playing online should be a team effort. Sadly, personal agenda can sometimes ruin the team's goal of successful hunts.
      On a side notes, I really hate it when people just flashed kushala down right after it took flight and created a tornado.... Nobody can attack it when it's wiggling itself in its protective tornado unless you're using a range weapon. There are still so many people online who have not learn this valuable lesson lol

    As a SnS main, for anyone who's curio, a useful trick to adopt would be to release the Left Analog Stick during your Charged Backhop. Pushing the directional stick forward influences the ground your backhop will cover and, by not moving forward, your character's charged attack will be shortened in terms of the distance it covers. This is especially useful when you find yourself in an advantageous position(such as the monster's head) and you want to keep yourself in line with the head while performing highly damaging Falling Bash attacks where the normal backhop could place you somewhere around the back/wings of a monster. It's a very minor nuance to the weapon, but fairly useful to know when maintaining your positioning. Happy Hunting!

    I think it’s important to mention that the back hop that goes into the charging slash has i-frames like a roll, so it can me used to evade in a tight spot and counterattack. Also, if you enter a direction before the advancing slash/ charged slash (from back hop) you can slightly change your destination, you can even leap farther than were you hoped from

    The legacy of pressing the circle for after climbing a ledge is to add even more speed and versitality so that you can be more aggressive. Essentially this allows you to skip the advancing slash towards a ledge and allows you to perform the aerial slash at the peak of the ledge which is a slightly more higher and such. It's really good and in my opinion faster.

    Awesome vid man. Just some small tidbits to include if it wasn't already mentioned. You can advancing slash up a ledge OR if the weapon is out just press O as you go up to get the jump slash. I believe it's also mentioned that SnS has something called phantom sharpness were compared to other green weapons of similar sharpness it won't bounce as much as other weapons. Back hop has evade properties, super cool! You can use it like lance(although not as fast) to place your self some where strategically under the monster to avoid things and get more damage. Mostly to avoid roars or fireballs midcombo and get more damage. Hope it helps anyone else! Cool vid man!

    Hi! I learned this myself a bit ago: when using the mounting finisher of the SnS, which is two shield bashes and one sword stab, go for the monster's head and attack once, wait for the animation to end and attack once again, keep doing this over and over, your finisher should be reseting each time and doing massive knock out damage. I once got 11 hits and doing 50 damage per bash. You'll eventually fall by knocking the monster out. It's so fun.

    One thing worth mentioning here is stun priming on mount.
    It takes a bit of trial and error, but, once you learn a monster's threshold for stun, you can repeat the first two hits of your mounted attack to pull them up to the brink of being stunned before finishing the attack as normal. Wail on them for a bit while they're down, then finish out the stun as they start getting up for an easy double knockdown.
    It can be a little more difficult if your with a group of randoms, but in solo or with a coordinated team, it is a phenomenal tactic.

    Focus PSA: The charged backhop is affected by the Focus skill, however, unlike GS, the animation is not sped up to indicate it is working. This can be misleading as it doesn't appear to work on the surface, but it is indeed possible to initiate the jumping slash faster by releasing the charge before the flash occurs, where normally that would just cause you to do an advancing slash. This was *probably* done to afford you the opportunity to still make use of the full time window you could spend away when backhopping instead of forcing you back in early into, say, a Kirin thunderbolt right on Kirin's body.

  • @kennnino3366

  • @Vauche

    Worth mentioning that *both* hits of the sliding rising/jumping slash apply mount damage, same for the advancing slash into/off a ledge. This means SnS can apply mounting damage *crazy* fast. Helm Breaker applies *incredible* mounting damage. I was able to perform the second mount on a full party Bazelgeuse after 2 well placed helmbreakers. SnS is secretly the best weapon for mounting monsters in the game. Even better than IG.

    only thing i can think of that you didnt mention is that there is a hit with the shield during the hop in animation of the charged slash. it really comes into play a bit when your hitting feet or stomachs, and you do the back hop when the head is behind/above you. the SnS is a really effective at building KO and exhaust this time around.
