      Even when the tail is severed, if you have a hammer or war horn in your group. Let them break the face. Attack the body Instead, break the wings/legs

      +Gamer G33k this is garbage advice! HH and hammer should always try and go for the head (unless it's hard to reach or they're sure another KO won't happen by that point in the hunt).

    • @MerchantGhost
      @MerchantGhost 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Enemy Stand I'm pretty sure he meant that the non-hammer/hh users should always avoid the head

    Man.. I remember watching your hammer tutorial back in 4U when I finally stepped away from lance after so many years. Looking though the comments and seeing all the new players finally enjoying the game, learning all about the weapons, and making it the phenomenon I’ve always wanted it to be really puts a smile on this Doodle’s face! Happy hunting new hunters!

    I've been telling people for years, no matter what you main, or how you hunt, you need to LEARN THE HAMMER! I'm a Longsword dweeb, and I'm a better hunter for learning hammer. Preach, Gaijin, spread the hammer word!

    • @klyxes

      how'd you improve ?

    • @kitedarkside8085
      @kitedarkside8085 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Mostly awareness. I went from swinging the wide sweeping LS recklessly to pinpointing key areas for maximum effectiveness, as well as being more aware of my teammates so as not to hit them. I was one of those jerks who would rush in with the LS and knock everyone down, but the precision attacks the hammer required and the danger of whacking people around (Especially back in Tri) just made me more accurate and more respectful when I went back to the LS. Now my friends can hunt with me without fear of being pushed around.
      Long story short, I learned how to take big attacks, and focus them right where I want them. Happy hunting!

    • @Gamer_G33k
      @Gamer_G33k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same here. Using the hammer also taught me to take it slow. At first I was like "GET ALL DA HITS FEST" but now i know the best way to hunt is to take it slow, wait for the right moment. Doing this actually makes hunts go faster imo since instead of just spamming a weak attack I can wait for that great moment to do lots of damage

    • @cherrybomb0388
      @cherrybomb0388 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Take it slow was a lesson I picked up from LBG, which was my first none melee weapon, though World is my third MonHun. You can't just spray bullets at the monster, it's much more effective to place shots, especially since the stronger ammo is single shot before a reload, and it matters exactly where you are hitting.

      I prefer using Rathalos/Rathian(Variants included) armor with a radobaan arm piece. This is because I use the Radobaan hammer so I make monsters fall asleep alot more. Basicly use what EasyRun said and also think about what element/ailment you have

    Your guides are amazing. I'm new to MH and frankly, probably the New World's Worst Hunter so they're a huge help to me. I've been using Lance after your guide for that weapon and it's really helped me slow down the game and try to figure things out.
    Your line about the Hammer helping you dig deeper into the game and help figure out weak points is super tempting. As it stands, I just guard against everything and pokepokepoke.
    Anyways, your guides are some of the best game related youtube videos I've watched. Truly appreciated.

    I'm VERY new to Monster Hunter. My friends have been pushing this series on me for sometime and I finally caved and I am so glad I did. This game is great. I normally play range or Mage roles within the party so I tried range. I can't seem to get it to stick... so on a whim, I tried the Hammer. I can't tell you how satisfying it is to smash faces. It's a little tricky to get the timing since I am not used to slower weapons but your tutorials are great. I watched the Insect Glaive one as well and I have improved since. Thank you so much for the videos! Subscribed! :)

    I’ve been a casual MH player since Tri on the Wii. Never more than 100-150 hours into any of them (well 200 in Tri but I digress). I always bounce around between weapons too. Long story short about 6 hours into World I decided to try Hammer for the first time ever...I don’t know why I didn’t try it before! I’m having so much fun with it in World, it was easy to pick up and learn and again so much fun. So here I am about 50 hours into World, loving the Hammer yet still learning things about it from your video. Keep up the great work, I have been a fan since I found your channel while playing MH4U. You taught me things then about S&S that I didn’t know and I had used them for years lol.
    I mean I’m still bouncing around with weapons because they are all so much fun this time around but Hammer is easily my favorite!

    My favorite Hammer video so far sir! One thing that's good to note is that when you do the wall scale/jump spinning attack, you can steer it quite a bit by holding a direction before you jump off the wall; it's quite useful.

    My mix set consist of;
    -Diablos Shatterer 2 (Hammer)
    -Dragonking Eyepatch (Head)
    -Diablos Mail Beta (Chest)
    -Nergigante Vambraces Alpha (Glove)
    -Nergigante Coil Beta (Waist)
    -Diablos Greaves Alpha (Boots)
    -Enervate Charm 3
    Decorations
    -Attack Jewel 1
    -Flight Jewel 2
    -Elementless Jewel 2
    -Slider Jewel 2
    Skills
    -Attack Boost Lvl 4
    -Slugger Lvl 3
    -Stamina Thief Lvl 3
    -Tremor Resistance Lvl 2
    -Weakness Exploit Lvl 2
    -Agitator Lvl 2
    -Airborne Lvl 1
    -Affinity Sliding Lvl 1
    -Non-Elemental Boost Lvl 1
    -Diablos Mastery (Bludgeoner)
    Now this consist of KO and making Monsters Exhausted very quickly while using the strongest Raw Damage Hammer which is Diablos Hammer. Agitator, Attack Boost, Weakness Exploit and Affinity Sliding all help negate that negative Affinity the Hammer has making it have a max of 30% Affinity dealing massive damage, Bludgeoner makes it easier to KO Monsters and also makes your hammer stronger as you lose sharpness, Green being the Sweet Spot of Sharpness. The Airborne skill is used for that great sliding spinning slam which makes each hit even more powerful. My thoughts I have been using this set for all of the Multiplayer stuff and it can KO and exhaust monsters very easily even Tempered Elders, if I can get the required materials for the augmentations then I will augment the Hammer for Extra Attack Power and an Extra Slot this will then let me slot a Tenderizer Jewel 2 along with the Attack Jewel.

      I already had a similar mix but Nerg hammer and some +affinity. I noticed I wasn't KO'ing anymore in HR. Seeing this video made me not feel as bad, so I guess I do need to start aiming back towards Slugger, at least for an online build.

    • @citrusquill7609
      @citrusquill7609 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thelgow adding Affinity will not increase the KO rate, you actually need Slugger skill but yea you want damage the Diablos Hammer is the way to go

    As a long time Hammer main I want to say this tutorial isn't bad.
    Not masterfully detailed. Left out one of the spinning finishers, catapult mechanic, omni-directional damage, Swing speed change from charging hammer, high risk "o" combo, and didn't detail stun damages.
    However, it is well-paced and accurate. Pleasure continue I thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial.

  • @Razeta
    @Razeta 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another little trick for hammer users. While jumping off ledges, if you do not already have a charge attack, you can use the charge midair to allow you to slightly extend your jump as well as adjust your direction. This allows a lot more mounting damage to be applied when the monster is sitting on top of a ledge and not in an optimal position for mounting strikes.

  • @Hc2p3n4t4rp
    @Hc2p3n4t4rp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    should be noted, hammer now has a way to cut tails, if you mount and go for the tail, those stabs count as cutting, and for some reason the hammer finisher cuts it of
    I imagine the hunter thining the muscles and knocking it of with the hammer onces its ready

    Thanks for the vid. I went Hammer first and loved it, but was 2nd guessing myself in HR when I went online and wasn't KO'ing anymore. It really does take forever or never really since I moved off Slugger for Weakness Exploit/Atk up. Also note the hammer is air king when near a ledge. If you dash off with X, pressing R2 will give you a little jump and let you change direction. I jump off the ledge, then hold the stick back to the ledge and hit R2 to get back onto it. Immediately angle the stick towards the monster so you can keep your momentum back to the ledge. Some things like Xeno if near the edge in first phase I can hit for 100+ multiple times vs the weak 40-60 on the legs. And I out rodeo Glaive's fairly often.

    Gaijin can you do an updated guide on positioning? Cuz alot of newbies are struggling with this aspect of the game.

    This video gave me incentive me to go try the hammer again, and good lord... that wide hook from a level one charge after storing power.
    Just had a hunt where I was capturing a high rank Odogaron. I mounted it first strike, knocked it over, KO'd it, staggered it, knocked it over again, mounted it a second time, knocked it over, exhausted it, and proceeded to go ham on its head! I had it limping in 3 minutes. New favorite weapon for ground based monsters I think. (Or until the next tutorial comes out telling me how to optimally use something else I suck at.)

    So there's this cool hammer tech I've been making use of with regards to mid-air charging- if you draw into a charge in mid-air, or roll off an edge with your hammer drawn and begin charging, the game will grant you an additional "bounce" off the air which you can orient in any direction you please. It doesn't sound like much, but what I've figured out you can do is roll off any edge (for example, ledges in the arena), rotate the control stick backward and initiate a charge that lands you back on the ledge. Thus, with literally any edge you can execute a whole lot of charged aerial attacks in quick succession, by simply going roll > rotate stick back > charge > release > rinse and repeat. This is also helped by the fact that the direction you face when you initiate the charge and when you release it are actually independent, which makes for some INCREDIBLY easy head sniping, while racking up the mount damage super quickly (and the raw damage output isn't too shoddy either).
    I'm telling you, hammer is the mounting weapon of this game. Insect glaive can back off.
    Also fun fact-, y'know those annoying vines in Wildspire waste that don't quite extend up the ledge even though they look like they do? You can use this technique to get up there anyway. Could save you a few seconds one day.
    tl;dr Aerial charging is weird. But kinda the best thing ever. If you ever find yourself struggling finding the face online because the monsters torn between 4 different targets, just start spamming this. Guaranteed results one way or the other.
    Oh, also, if you're still here- pressing X when you're sliding and charging is not only a good way to cancel an unintentional slide, but also generally better than pressing triangle because you can still unleash the aerial charge in the jump. Triangle commits you to it but X gives you that extra moment to make a decision on what you do with your jump.

    I love the hammer, I think people underestimate the swinging attack, it's the only hammer attack that keeps you mobile during your and if you hit that last upswing it can do a ton of stun damage. Great video, keep em coming! ^^

    you might want to include the fact that the big bang combo is a high risk high return move, since if you whiff a swing in the combo, you lodge your hammer in the ground and are vulnerable for a short while. so for monsters that flail their heads around too much when they are down, you might want to just use your regular golf swing combo, since whiffing with that move still allows you to continue with the combo.
    i noticed one small thing that is more of an advanced thing to know about using the hammer, yes, charging the hammer slightly changes your moveset, but uncharged moves, from what I have noticed, are slightly faster to pull off, just something to keep in mind. as a hammer main, online, I notice, unless the player is accustomed to monster hunter, or has lots of experience playing multiplayer, they will trip hammer users left and right. Please, if you are new, or havent played much online, learn positioning and proper etiquette. every time you trip me, we likely miss out on me KOing a monster and/or building up more KO for later, as a hammer user, it is my job to continually smash a monsters face in, and if you make that job mostly impossible, I will just sit down and let you fight the monster on your own, because obviously you dont want my help. sitting and watching from the sidelines is preferable to continually being interrupted in the middle of combos to the point where I have almost no damage output, and cannot dodge out of the way of attacks in time. Hammer mains tend to understand enemy attacks and behavior much more than most other types of players short of GS users from what I find, since they have such a high risk style of play and are designed to target almost exclusively a single body part, the head. if you want to "git gud" fast, pick up the hammer. it forces you to learn all about positioning and risk taking. once you get good with a hammer, its a much easier task of picking up any other weapon, because you learn how to read the monsters movements from playing hammer. you get the added benefit of having the satisfaction of inflicting blunt force trauma on the monsters. also, pick up the paralysis hammer, combine that with the KO skill, and you can stunlock monsters for days, even more so if you have the impact mantle which greatly increases your KO power.

      Elc22 Preach. It's also good to note that sometimes taking a hunt slow can ironicly speed up a hunt. When I picked up the hammer I learn how much wasted damage I was doing with other weapons. With the hammer you learn to just either run in and get a few quick attacks off and run out, or wait for that one moment when the monster is somehow immobilized. This way you can get the mostf damage off in one go. I used to exclusively play CB and would use my Charged slam attack on a moving target. Do NOT do this. Wait for the right moment to do your power attacks and it can change the course of battle.

    One thing I'd like to add is you can change the direction of your jumping attack. When you jump off a ledge, press and hold R2 and aim with the left stick to aim the attack. You can also do this when you release R2 so it's super useful to ensure you hit the attack.
    Another thing is that your hunter actually defies the laws of physics and does a hop in the air when you initiate the R2 jumping attack. This means you can jump off a ledge, then R2 back on top of the ledge you just jumped off. Great for getting a mount on a monster standing right next to a ledge

    I was never a big hammer guy in previous games but during the beta I gravitated towards it almost instantly. They didn't change much but it just feels so satisfying this time around. I still use switch axe or insect glaive for the annoying flying monsters like Rathalos that are hard to reach with hammer, but it's definitely my new favorite.

    You did miss 1 move that I noticed and technically it is the forward triangle that you already covered, you didn't mention you can do that move while spinning. There's a total of 3 different Spinning finishers; Spinning Side Smash (Didn't cover), Spinning Follow-up (Covered) and Spinning Strong Upswing (Covered).
    Also might of been a good idea to mention that you don't have to be facing the monster as a lot of the moves can hit behind you.

    Great tutorial! I personally have never been into the hammer but now I'm tempted to try it again just not sure if I need to though. I kind of just picked up the HH after neglecting the weapon for 3 games and have fallen in love with the thing. I know the hammer is a good weapon, it's just that when I use it, for some reason I don't get the level of satisfaction I get when I use the HH or, my main weapon, the GS. I think I'm just gonna craft a decent hammer and go against a few higher level monsters to see if that changes.
    On a side note, the GS is another fantastic option for those looking to become better players. You also gain the left shoulder of Zeus...no seriously.

    1:40 iirc the side smash have some form of flinch free and the effect continue for the rest of the combo, use it if you have a longsword user next to you, you can do side smash than the circle attack altho i haven't tested it if it still have the flinch free effect

    There was also an attack right after you start spinning. Its a faster way to cancel it if you need to stop cus the monster moved. Its right after you start but before you complete the first spin.

  • @Hammerlord31
    @Hammerlord31 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    By the way, there's actually 4 ways to end the spinning bludgeon. Pressing attack the moment it starts does what I think is called the spinning side smack (same as forward+attack). It's the fastest way to cancel the spinning bludgeon. Spinning follow-up is just between the side smack and the strong upswing in number of revolutions.

    Small note: if you jump off a ledge first and then press r2 while in the air you will float up in the air a couple of feet. This is important because you can maneuver in the air and land back on the ledge you jumped off of to hit a monster that is there.

  • @rpglover101
    @rpglover101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing you didn't mention:
    When jumping off a ledge uncharged, pressing R1/RT will do a different jumping attack than pressing the other attach buttons or jumping off charged. This jumping attack gives you a bit of mid air hop, which gives you more distance and allows you to redirection yourself. Use it if the monster suddenly moves, is too far away, or if they're on the same ledge you just jumped off! Its incredibly useful.

    One incredibly useful tip you might wanna add. When jumping off a ledge or wall jump you can charge mid air and actually 180 or change direction all together . Really useful in multiplayer because the monster will be moving alot more than usual.

    Added tip.. for the Spinning Hell Bludgeoning Thunderous Hammer Smash From Above, you could actually sort of control the trajectory of where you will land, though the timing is strict, you need to release R2 at the very moment you're hunter is facing on an upward slope while sliding.. Perfect if the monster's face suddenly changed it's course.
    Source: Used Hammer until HR35 until Bow happened.
    EDIT: Also, I just remembered.. the Upswing finisher of the Triangle combo has a very weird hit angle.. like say, Diablos' face is on your back, when you performed the Upswing, it will still hit.

    Two missing moves:
    After you enter the charged spinning attack, you can immediately press attack to end it in one spin with a side smash.
    After doing a jump attack, you can do a follow-up attack with an upward swing.

    I dont know if you use bows but some stuff could be cleared up about it, a lot of skills form the old days dont work well with the bow anymore, like focus, because i see most good bow users capitalizing on the dragonpiercer and dodge combo shots, it might be a good weapon to cover as well.
