This EXACT thing happened in California back in the 2000s, and it was legalized for medical use. What happened then is thousands of "doctors" popped out of nowhere to recommend medical weed. It was a HUGE industry in itself.... My weed "doctor" was a dentist from Las Vegas ! 😂😂

Yes they need to regulate how the weed is sourced. From the information i got from a number of shops, most of the weed is imported- which is not helping local Thais.

@sirsillybilly one issue I can already see is the day/night periods in Thailand. Most foreign cultivars will try to flower straight away as they have short daylight periods in Thailand. This can be resolved by supplimental lighting though. I think within a short time they can learn to grow, harvest dry and cure good quality cannabis.

They've announced some changes which in my opinion won't be implemented.
F all will change as Anutin who was the Health Minister who pushed for the weed deal to be decriminalised, who is the current Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister is in a position of power due to his party, the Bumjaithai Party being a very important part of the current government coalition.
The changes if any that were announced will be minimal due to the the fact that the Government needs to keep Bumjaithai happy and in the coalition to continue.
So the changes announced will not in my opinion be enforced and things will continue as they are.

I don’t understand why anything needs to change. I just visited Thailand on a cannabis holiday and it was amazing. It’s not like Amsterdam where you have people walking around smoking weed openly, stoned off their head or on mushrooms, etc. Not where I was in Sukumvit anyway. The whole scene is very respectful and you can barely tell anyone is even stoned. This is what I would say to the Thai government clean up your kiddy porn problem before worrying about harmless cannabis.

The real reason this law change is happening is to monopolize the supply of the product into the hands of the rich who are the only ones that can afford the significant outlay required to set up a 'medical grade' grow. The big thrust behind the law change is to force people who want to grow weed to sell commercially, to grow to a medical grade standard. This instantly removes all competition from people in the small business sector. They simply can't afford to do that sort of grow. It is what has happened in Australia with medical weed supplied on prescription and in California and other U.S. states. The irony is it is like demanding someone grow their tomatoes to a medical grade standard before you can sell them at the local market. Totally unnecessary, yes it is a drug but the risks associated with it are the same as ingesting any other product grown for consumption on a farm. If the farmer uses bad chemicals on his tomatoes or sells them with mold on them it would be picked up in standard checks by the Thai equivalent of the department of primary industry. Weed can be exactly the same without a problem. This is about control of the market not prohibition.

I GUARANTEE that even after the new "regulations" are implemented mid next year that NOTHING will change in regards to the experience of the buying/consumption process except for a possible extra "pharmacist" working in the shops to "script write", maybe some or most of the sketchy mobile cart dealers will be gone, and maybe there will be a bit fewer options for those who wish to consume outside their home/hotel. That will be all anyone notices after any new laws are implemented. It's way too late now to turn around now, and any change that impacts the HUGE population of consumers here will not happen. Everyone, even the harshest of critics, would agree at this point that the negative effect to the economy/infrastructure etc would be way too costly and damaging at this point, not to mention the hugely embarrassing loss of face Thailand would experience.....

As for street vendors/dealers might not only be selling substandard or unsafe products, but they could also be part of illegal operations. The lack of accountability and quality control in such transactions poses significant risks. Instead, it's safer and more responsible to obtain these products from licensed and reputable sources where the quality and composition of the products are assured. This approach not only ensures your safety but also helps in mitigating the risks associated with black market activities.

I didn't see any one going wild on it (really no impact at all) The shops weren't overly busy and mainly had farang customers like me. I only smelt it a few times on Bangla Road. Sounds like the situation has gotten a lot wilder.. I only smoked it inside the hotel room. 38% THC lemon pie (if I remember the name correctly) was one variety that I tried that was out of this world. The average observed THC potency was 23.1% lower than the lowest label reported values and 35.6% lower than the highest label reported values. Overall, ~70% of the samples were more than 15% lower than the THC potency numbers reported on the label, with three samples having only one half of the reported maximum THC potency.

One day, we couldn’t find a joint unless we talked to the right people. Next day, it was like you couldn’t NOT find weed if you tried 😅 Pretty cool experience, we were buying weed from a street vendor in BKK and there were cops with dogs walking right by LOL. Felt totally illegal. I have a feeling the cops just weren’t getting enough profits, so now they can bust all the shops and smokers breaking the rules every so often and collect the hefty fines…kinda like the mushroom shake bars in Koh Phangan where they periodically get raided, but never seem to shut down 🤔Im sure it wont be hard to find if you look for it - And some of the bars with smoking areas were totally secluded in the back, so I’m sure there will still be lowkey weed lounges - you just gotta know where to go!

If this goes that way it will probably die a very stupid death. This morning I asked the manager woman at a large weed shop if she knew how many Thai people were employed in the recreational weed business in Thailand. Saying that she was not sure but it is thought to be around 24,000 employed. So this new rule that is going to save tourists from buying way over priced weed from legal shops and free around 24,000 Thai people from their income. If the rule is to keep Thai people from buying it then prohibit them from buying it and allow them to grow their own without interference by the government and it's need for endless forms and constant reporting of the same data over and over. Oh my a happy ending for all. IMO. PS Thailand is way too nice to pollute! Please be a responsible earthling.

Thanks for the heads up, I must have missed the news that the new laws are now about to kick in. There was a lot of confusion before about .2% THC, but that was not for flower but for extracts only, flower seems to not be understood as being essentially the same in effect as an extract by the Thai government, so they left that alone, that distinction was not mentioned in this video, the distinction between extract and flower. If they don't address that in the new law, there's a pretty nice loophole for there still to be legal flower of whatever THC level you like.

Tourism gained because of recreational cannabis will be lost. All the recreational cannabis workers will be without a job. This is not a positive move for Thailand but here we go. Economically disappointing. It's really not my thing but being from Cali. USA, I've witnessed the income generation and job creation. In the end, people that want to smoke are just going to go "underground" for their supply which means an increase in organized crime and additional law enforcement staffing. They should just streamline the taxing of the product and treat it just like any other similar product, like alcohol for example. Watch the stat increase of people that have glaucoma or any other "medicinal" reason to have the drug.

The 0.2% thing is extremely easy to get around. For example, you could make edibles where the weight of the edible is almost entirely from the ingredients, and then just put 0.2% of THC. As long as it weighs enough, you will still get stoned. Same applies for tinctures. You might need to drink more if it is diluted, but that's really it

Thanks for info. They could make all this so much easier by having but regulating things like edibles and vapes that don't leave weed smell, rather than nearly everything as 1968 combustible flower that does. The Thai government doesn't really care about the farangs except as money sources, so in the tourist capitals they could have an easy-to-get card. However, they try to attract such a wide sweep of tourists that they'll want to make it so some nationalities can go there and never see it. Amsterdam has had the same thing: catering to the soft-drug tourists while restricting activity to places easy for others to avoid.
