  • For those that wanted "more Swab" and longer videos! I left a lot more in this video than normal upon the request of all of you out there. This episode kind of gives you a glimpse into what a normal workweek looks like for us. A little bit of progress on one project then onto another. Garrett and I work very calmly together and when building a boat can be stressful it's super important to remain patient with each other. We are moving right along with Rediviva's transition into a real sailboat! We are so eager to get the mast up. Hope you enjoy the journey :)

Looks like you need to make a copper top for the mast, to keep water out of the end grain. The splits and checks will just get bigger if you don't protect it from water. You can order a small sheet of "dead soft" copper on amazon or ebay for 15-20 dollars. Fasten it with epoxy, and stainless pin nails.

Please keep up the weekly videos. It keeps our spirits up !
As you add more and more layer of BLO it will take longer and longer to dry. I am not sure if adding more dryer will help.
The "other" outdoor wood finish is some times call "3-2-1". Three part mineral spirits, two parts BLO and one part oil based marine spar varnish. This dries very quickly so 4 or 5 coats can be applied in a day. Then you change the ration to "2-2-2". Several coats of this, but these coats will take longer to dry. Final coats are "1-2-3". You probably only need a couple of coats to this.

Weld a cap like the one you have on your head on top of the Mast Ring to protect the end of the mast and right on the top, dead center you could put a medallion or weather vain right on the tippy top. Or you could weld on lights around the cap. Either way a cap like the one on your head would protect against weathering your main mast end cut. Love your channel. Great work you two.

About the plan... When you find yourself standing around, looking at at work, thinking about the possibilities, I find it best to admit that you're stuck. Getting un-stuck isn't always obvious but paper usually helps. One strategy I use is sketching out all the possibilities, usually small enough to get a handful of solutions on the same page. From what I gather, the creative process and the editing/critical processes interfere with each other. Better to do the creative part first, then get feedback. It makes it a lot easier to discuss with someone else, too. The ease of physically pointing to different solutions while discussing pros and cons is significant. Otherwise you can end up getting mired in naming and agreeing on each possibility, which takes time and effort. A picture is an idea trapped in space but a verbal description ties you into the temporal domain... I don't know what will work for you but I know the feeling. Even watching you look at the work, thinking, brings it back. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but I've come to dread that feeling because I now recognize that it's a lack of clarity. And clarifying complex issues is often a fair amount of work. It's not linear, like calking seams. If you have the right flash of inspiration, it's suddenly over. But some problems require a lot of effort and the progress isn't even or apparent.

I like your idea of splicing in eyes, serve the wire and then stitch on leather to prevent chafe. Very traditional rigging. What are you going to use to tension the rig? Turnbuckles or possibly deadeyes? You can make your own deadeyes out of lignum vitae or anything else that's similarly hardwearing. Your friend who helped you make the chainplates could probably help make some steel bands to go around the deadeyes.

Great minds think alike! We are going dead eyes using black locust. We have another buddy, you'll meet soon, who built his own boat in the 70s and offered to help us make our dead eyes, perrel beads, and pins for a pin rail on the shrouds or around the base of the mast. They're turning out Sweeeet

@@SaltandTar Cool, that will look great on Rediviva. I've made some palms and deadeyes back when I worked on restoring SV Elissa (she's a historic square-rigger in Texas). Watching you guys brings back fond memories of making the spars for Elissa as well. I like traditionally rigged boats and it will fit Rediviva very well. Keep up the great work.

This boat is strong enough to lay on one side on a sand bar and paint coal tar on it over the coal tar epoxy. Using the coal tar epoxy for the graber layer and then the anthracite based coal tar, you heat it up on a propane stove and you can paint it on wearing a winter glove so you don't burn yourself. I did my wood boat undersides with it and the bottom looks like a vinyl record album, then tar paper and copper next. Because I dred the leaky wood boat thing. I want a dry boat. It goes on between an eighth and and a sixteenth. If you paint on any thicker , it might run if it gets hot in summer. In the water, it gets super hard, like hard plastic. You can get the tar at old supply yards to fix old school roofs. It comes in 100 lb steel cans. I set the can on its side in august and it oozes out on a large tarp. Then it's like gooey playdo and you pull off the taffy and stick it into small steel cans, you heat up,later. So you recreate what yhey do to use it. Same steel cans to heat the tar, but hand sized cans. Save every can you eat from for a year, you need like 50 to 100. Once it's smoking hot, you get two strokes and it's colds out on you to reheat for a few seconds. It's very dangerous to paint it on but I wore a long sleeve shirt and a winter glove for insulation. So the layers are coal tar epoxy, anthracite based coal tar #1, tar paper, Road tar, copper. The tar from oil can dissolve the lignins in the wood, close to wood you want pine baked tar which is what coal tar is, ancient tree sap. Costs like 100 for the large tar can and that's enough to do 3 boats. The coal tar epoxy is 2 part and costs 80 a gallon. The copper is not any more expensive than the killer cost of ablative copper paint . This is a one time purchase hull job deal. In England and Ireland they are the experts in this, serious tar traditions.

    How old is Swab?
I have a 12 year old Pomeranian cross, 8 pounds of shear terror.
If he was there, he would be on the deck telling you what you were doing wrong.
Bossy little guy but we love him.
This stay at home stuff is killing me.
But I have beat the crap out of youtube.
I have watched way too many boating channels. Started watching boat tours of boats I could never afford.
Got it figured that I would like a used Nordhavn 40-ll.
Hey if I had a half million to spend, why not LOL.
    Thanks for the great content.
So very appreciated right now. I'm at the point where you could have 1/2 hour of paint drying and I would probably still watch, thumbs up and comment about how great it was.
    Stay safe.

You could make this a junk rig and it would take yhe prize for simplicity being a virtue. A rectangle has twice the area of a triangle for same height. Want that heavy boat to max out its hull speed. Junk rig sail is a rectangle and can be reefed real fast. Then a huge jib off the bowsprit is a great idea. So it looks like a boat called BERTIE. So you can do some wing and wing when it's downwind sailing. To maneuver the boat around in marinas, I put a mizzen sail up, a small one 8 X 10. Just a kicker for the back to turn the stern around because a full keel is hard to turn on a dime. A full keel boat like this is self steering enough, no need for all the wind vane crap. My sail area went from 405 to 700. Going from Bermuda rig to junk rig. Getting hit in the head by flying lumber when you jib, no thanks. Use it or lose it, my brains can rest at night, low stress sail set up. The idiots laughing are all on other %/#@ed up boats. I sew my sail panels up from torn sails they throw away. Sailboats don't run on wind, they run on money. The wind is free, it's the pirates who own the marinas. So don't park at marinas.
