Salt & Tar: Episode 58-Embracing Yard Life

  • Diving into yard life again. Long and productive days. Napa is hot so taking mid-day breaks is huge. The second half of the day when it's still warm but the decks are fully shaded are the best. After our work here in the yard is complete we'll be looking for a slip closer to the bay to continue fitting the boat together and then sea trials. So if anyone knows of a marina anywhere in the San Fransisco area that will take us for a couple months let us know! We are a wooden boat and need liveaboard to stay on track and on task. The dream is not to live at a dock but to be free on anchor or on the ocean sailing! Having the dock would still be really helpful for the next few stages but ultimately we'll be home-basing from Richardson's bay in Sausalito. It's a huge free anchorage close to the best winds the bay has to offer. Yard life is treating us well but yes we are anxious to get back in to the water!!!
    Cheers everyone!
    Thanks for watching

    I am living in Oklahoma and binge watching y'alls adventures. My sister has a condo at Alameda Del Prado, and to see you guys in the area, I won't say for your privacy, but to see the powerlines and the river and such. I haven't been visiting the area since 2016. Brings hapiness to my heart. Thank you for your channel and content. Peace and prayers, love on.

    I am still a working carpenter at 66. Most people can handle straight lines and 90 corners, but anything more than that becomes art. It always takes lots more time, let alone the time in your head preplanning it. But the results shine and give you a body rush when you see it, even years later. I have layed in bed after days like that and enjoyed a euphoric wellbeing lulling me to sleep because of a productive day. Hats off to both of you.

    Boatlife today used big fender washers and screw to hold deck planking down temporarily till the glue set. He screwed it down on the edge of the plank where the glue bead lays between the boards.

      Willow good idea!!! Then there are no holes in planking but when they fill the hole doing it the way they plan on doing it and stain it , it will make it look great as if there was nails holding it. The way you mentioned would be easier tho if they can make sure to fill each hole that would be harder to see between the planks Great idea tho 👍👍👍

    Grew up in the outskirts of Sacramento, and my uncle owned a cabin at the mouth of Tomalas Bay, so many days we would take different routes through Napa and Petaluma on our way to his cabin. The heat is rough in the San Joaquin valley, with high humidity, so to crawl into your cabin at night must not be easy. I would need more than a small fan, so it's not as easy as it looks coping with the heat and being able to do those long hrs. Hang in there, it's lookin pretty darn good. From a retired union carpenter, keep the focus and don't let any weather take your eye off the prize.

    Could I suggest a "full" face 3M face mask? See Cory. This mask covers eyes, nose, and mouth. Change the pre-filters daily and the secondary filters every third day. Toxins enter the body through ears, eyes, nose, hair, and skin. Would have loved to see you guys wearing full-body overalls. Sweat attracts more toxins than any other body function. You both look awesome...wear the gear to help you look as good as you do.

    • @mwatkins2464

      Captain Ron you cannot wear full body overalls in 100 degrees or higher heat. This humidity makes it feel like 110 to 115 degrees.

I know you credit them at the end of each episode but some day I hope you have time to do two things: list all of the artists you listen to and give us a little biographical sketch. The two of you are so multitalented it is just amazing. Your segments are really well edited which must be time consuming in and of itself. Hat tip to the person that provided you with the Yamaha outboard motor.

    Never seen oregon (douglas fir) timber used as thin veneer deck planking before. This is because (I perhaps incorrectly believed) it is such such a soft wood; good for interior framing and if used outside, then as heavy planking or coated for protection on masts and spars. But I'm always super impressed with your breathless courage in continually disregarding all the time honored boat design and boat building rules that some old fogies stupidly stick by . Your videos are great and sometimes startling. And of course, I'm endlessly engrossed by the wise and considered comments from the armchair admirals each installment. I'm truly fascinated with what lies ahead.

    You guys sure are an inspiration. I'm in the middle of a major restoration project right now (not nautical) and if it wasn't for people like you, Doug and Leo I probably would be months behind where I am right now. I get a little burnt out, see a new post from you then tell myself, "they're still chugging along, no reason I cant be".
    People look at large projects in terms of dollar signs and completely miss the total scope of the work being done. There are countless hours figuring out how to realize the next step, coordinating different sub-projects so they don't interfere with each other, figuring materials, always thinking 4 phases into the future, etc., etc.
    THEN if that doesn't wear you down enough you gotta get up and DO THE WORK! We can't leave out all the layabouts and scoffers that will tell you you're wasting you resources and time when you could be on the couch watching football or pissing your money away at the bar every night.
    You're doing a great job and I eagerly anticipate future videos of you taking her on adventures. THANK YOU!!!

    I am impressed with your work ethic and focus to achieve your goals. "God is in the detail" and he certainly is looking down on yours. Being ignorant of general boat building, I have two queries:
    1) Why did you have to remove the paint finish, was the paint not good enough for adhesion of the deck planking?
    2) A floor sander would have made light work of the bulk paint removal and would have saved you such toil!
    Keep up the good work.

    • @lancer2204
      @lancer2204 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      An educated guess at the answers.
      1. the paint layer makes for a poor bonding surface, this would result in rapid delamination of the epoxy/deck plank composite.
      2. Having used floor sanders (on far too many occasions), they do not work well on curved surfaces and are prone to rip through the surface you are sanding if not kept in constant motion.

    • @mwatkins2464
      @mwatkins2464 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      clive williams epoxy adheres to fiberglass with a very strong bond. If used over paint then you are just depending on a thin layer of paint to bond everything which is very weak.

    You are basically using a veneer on your decks. I had a little cold molded racing sloop that was setup the same way. Calked with 5200. After a couple of years because there really wasn’t enough depth to the 1/4” veneer the boat working in a seaway started popping the seams. I worked hard trying keep her sealed up, There was a plywood and fiberglass under deck but water somehow found it’s way under the veneer and into end grains in the hull and started to rot unabated and unknown to me. Within 5 years this beautiful sloop was unrepairable and was a total loss. Just a word of caution. If you can think of any place where water can stand under that veneer and get to bare wood. Be proactive and seal it up.

    • @mwatkins2464
      @mwatkins2464 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alectron Dorfman no screws or holes will be in this deck. It’s going to be sealed up with epoxy covering the whole deck with no thru holes. Planks will not be screwed down but will be epoxied in place. The screws are used to just hold the planks till epoxy sets then removed then holes drilled out and filled with epoxy. The entire deck will be epoxied to stop all water leaks from ever happening. 👍👍

    • @alectrondorfman1057
      @alectrondorfman1057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am aware of that. Just providing a caution fwiw since I had a boat that was lost that used the same production technique. We thought she was impervious to harm as well. But the weak spot was the veneer, which was so thin it could not support the caulk. That is where the water entered and found its way to a vulnerable spot we didn’t think existed

    With the screws breaking off. Try spraying all of them with WD40 which acts as a mold release before setting them in so they don't get set in the epoxy. Put them in a zip lock, spray in the WD40 and mix around. If they are stuck, you can heat up the screw with a soldering gun to soften the epoxy and they should release.

    Love it‼️ Why don't you put a tarp over your heads to keep the sun off you and the deck⁉️. GOOD LUCK ⛵️⛵️ Vinny 🇺🇸

    HI guys, believe it or not but pouring the heat to the cap board with a heat gun will do wonders in getting the board too make the curve on the rail or anywhere aboard the vessel. Your getting there ! Cheers from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦

    I have the same yellow broom as you. When I need a hand broom to get into tight spaces, I unscrew the handle from the brush, and use just the brush. This is the limit of my technical aptitude! :¬) Webhead USA

    Hi Ruth & Garreth,
    I love watching the project moving along. One thing struck me watching this episode:
    It's clearly very hot on deck at the moment, yet you work out in the sun. This must be very uncomfortable.
    So why not hang a tarpaulin as a 'parasol'? You've got wood for posts, a rope, a tarp and some string...
    It won't be perfect, but it might make things slightly more comfortable...
    BTW Garreth , using flip-flops as a kneeling-pad is brilliant!

    Love that Festool Rotex. Great choice! You might look into using tile spacers for the planking. Reusable and do not have to make them.

    2:30 - just want folks to know "we are NOT crazy people". Presumably these folks haven't followed your channel and seen you commit your entire lives to building a wooden boat, entirely with a pencil, some tar and small bottles of beer...good luck with convincing them =:-)))...but you are both lovely people, so that's ok. :))

    If you screw down the planks where the seams are you can avoid drilling holes in the planking. Use a washer with the screw to spread the load out.

    No leaks is very important indeed! Good call.
    It looks marvelous! (Billy Crystal...SNL) remember? Just an "it" in place of "you"
    Thanks for the video.

    You two have been missed, we all have wondered how things were progressing. The deck boards that you clamped down to conform to the shape of the deck. What if you had kept wet to soften the fibers? I have built several lap streak runabouts and soaked the timbers in the tank for a week or so prior to clamping into position. I was using Cypress so that may be different from what you would do with Douglas Fir.
    I am really liking the look of the decks. I had teak on my Irwin 45 Ketch, you had to maintain it but it was what I liked.
