  • Today we are getting more seeds started, I think Andy has the gardening fever, ha! We are in zone 7a and we've got about 1 month before we can really start planting, but we can't wait! Also there is some work to be done to our milking stanchion to adjust it for Candy, shes a little longer than Belle and I want her to be as comfortable as possible during the milking process. I hope you enjoy todays video!
The watermelons we planted were Jubilee, Charleston Grey, and Sugar Baby.
    We planted Hales Best Cantelope.
The tomatoes were Lemon Boy, Hossinator, San Marzano, Mountain Merit, and Red Snapper.

It's great to live vicariously through your family... LOL ...I like to watch your videos, and I jump on the new ones as soon as I get the notification that a new one is uploaded. Thank you for showing what kind of life your family lives, and then showing that there are still some people who live the way folks have lived for many, many years; also, it proves that everything is not needed from the big box stores. I'd bet the food your family eats is exponentially more healthy than the mundane/average junk we pay more for in our lives.

In our area everybody waits until the 10th of May to set plants out. It may not frost then but ole folks called it the 10th of May cold snap. Now it is also not just the 10th of May it is usually sometime that week of the 10th of May. We seem to always have a cold snap that week. Like I said it may not frost but it seems it always drops few degrees around that time.

Megan I find that the seeds I save are more robust than store bought. I think that is because they are acclimating to our climate. You just have to be careful with cross pollination. Those 3 watermelons will cross pollinate unless you plant them far apart. You would need to took up the distance as I don’t know that.

I've been waiting for this video. I remember when I was little, Grandpa and Grandma bedding sweet potatoes in a frame behind the smokehouse. I couldn't remember exactly how they did it as that's been 50 plus years ago and Daddy always bought slips. I'm not a big yellow tomato person but I've been planting a few Lemon Boys for the last few years and they are the best yellow tomato I've ever planted. Some friends of mine in Randolph County at the Piney Woods Homestead plant the Red Snappers and they really likes them. The Mountain Merrits are like Mountain Prides but are supposed to have good blight resistance. Megan I know all about those 12 hour shifts and at 61, they're starting to catch up with me!

Here in western NC you can’t plant garden until May 15. Im over by GSMNP, cherokee area.
You always feel like it’s warm and frost over. Last week my tulip tree (Japanese’s magnolia) was in full bloom. Now, it’s all brown and dead looking. Two days with nights on the 20s.
cabbage And other cold weather crops are fine. It’s always may 15 here before anyone plants their garden.

I live in south west Indiana, and last year I planted some cayenne peppers, I don’t know what the conditions were, but I had more peppers than leaves! I’d be happy to send you a picture of the last harvest. And- I had picked from these two plants when I went to work for my dinner, and even gave some away in the middle of harvest. Just 2 small plants ! It blows my mind. I never had that when I lived on the west coast. 169 chiles at the end of the season from these two ! I dug them up to winterize them, never done that before. Getting ready to transplant pretty soon when frost doesn’t come back. ❤

I didn't buy slips this year, but was kinda regretting it. Late winter last year, I purchased bulk potatoes to can that happened to be organic (untreated). Saved some back and planted those last spring. They did really well, and it was so much cheaper than buying seed potatoes! Saved some of those to plant this year, too. Will definitely try your method for growing slips using organic and see if it will work that way. Thanks so much!

There would be people selling watermelons on the side of the road. We most always got one and the farmer would plug it first. Before we ever once arrived at my uncle's house the plug had the teeth prints of a little 5 or 6 year old girl. Guess who?? 😂

Test your watermelons starts and direct seeding to compare. I found out years ago with cucumbers and squash that transplanting set the starts back as much as it took direct seeds to sprout and catch up. So do some side by side comparisons in the same season.

It’s so hard to wait for Easter to plant your seedlings , etc. you must always wait
until after Easter to feel safe. But then you still are taking a chance.

I'm north of Ireland & our last frost date is the end of May. So I have to start 90% of my plants indoors so they have enough time to reach maturity, in the short growing season. Melons & peppers get started in mid Feb. Tomatoes get sown early March & all the summer & winter squash in mid April. Spuds go deep in the ground around St. Patricks day so always survive any frosty nights. Has worked fine for me this past 20 yrs. I'm sure your sowings will be fine too :) Thanks for another great video& Happy Easter!

Love watching your videos! So when your sweet potato slips grow do you just leave them where they are? You can grow them in a container so to speak?? Last year was my first time planting slips. I did a small area my yield was great but they were small. Should i have fertilized more?? Am in Michigan so we are still waiting for warmer weather. Thanks for your help! Have a blessed day!

no we'll break the slips off and plant them out in the garden. you might have not gave them enough time to grow, sweet potatoes dont usually require much fertility
