- Which method would you use? I prefer the final method, stretch tape all the way around! Just note, it can get costly on larger homes w/ many openings. Some people prefer liquid flashing, it's not for me on windows unless the window is recessed..

A note on liquid flashing over tape. I believe Huber recommends wiping tape with acetone first to remove the release agent from the top of the tape that is used to prevent it from sticking to itself on the roll.
from what i've seen, cutting the bottom of the window sill at a mitered angle (angled outward from the house) is a nice touch before adding the tape.
An angled sill pan is code in a lot of places. My area included. Seems dumb not too. We don’t add a clapboard or anything like that. We cut our cripples right from the getgo.
It's because it's PRESURE activated!!! Thank you for saying it needed to be rolled, so important! Been detailing windows with SOPREMA for 15 years in a very similar way... another key difference between it and the flashing tape you are using is the thicker bitumen backing allowing for much better self healing properties.
I like those methods! I usually fabricate stainless steel sill pans that i sit over protecto wrap tape
Just finished 29 window install with new con. Windows in a finished house today with 5 other guys heat was brutal stay cool bang on!!!
Like the stretch tape and then reg tape and lastly using liquid flash when needed, cuz ya do need to use it in some areas. Everyone has there preferred method and like that we have the “materials” to choose and work with👍🏻

We would measure up and do window pans and door pans.. mainly out of bonderized steel. Then soldered or liquid flash at seems and nails. We are located in LA area

Now I finally see a good flashing (Huber) and properly done. Do you know how many builders skip flashing and just caulk?
Wow, this is all that flashing is? Im repairing antique weighted windows(fixing the weight systems behind the trim, replacing broken panes) and many have water damage under them. The web said this is due to bad flashing. Im in the walls looking for some specialty metal or fancy grooved SOMETHING that would direct water out. But its basically just a seal. Thank you for this vid lol. Now I know its this simple i plan to might as well fix all flashing as I go.
Some say to use mineral spirits when putting tape on top of tape as there is a release agent on the top side of the tape
There’s a few things to note:
1. I HIGHLY suggest taping your sheathing seams first, unfortunately I can’t do that in California as they want to see our nailing pattern first. This home wasn’t signed off before we did windows, as inspections have been all over the place.
2. Prime or roughing up the Flashing Tape before adding liquid flashing is a must as well.
3. Do what works for YOU. I used to tape windows and do the butterfly method, it worked but was a multi step process.. Wouldn’t be using Huberwood if it didn’t make us more efficient.
4. Have a good weekend, don’t work too hard. I’m heading to LA on Monday, if anyone wants to meet up, I’m going out to a 40K SF mansion in the hills to film a video. Yorba Linda area..
Learn to pre tool your bead of sealant and not only will it bond better but you will have less goop to deal with at the end of the day
@@grahamennis606 Not a fan of the liquid flashing for windows, probably why I suck at installing it.
Also never caulk up its hard to see what your bead is doing
I have brick face on 2 sides of the window I'm replacing so getting a sill pan in will require cutting between the back of the brick face and the OSB sheathing with a multi tool. I may have to rebuild my rough opening because of termite damage.
@mattBangswood, with all the mid-century renovations of adding sliding glass doors to bring in lighting, would you show how to install a new sliding glass door/window, by cutting a hole in the existing wall, reinforce it properly for load stress?
I like the liquid flashing. It is tenacious. But boy it can get really messy if you don’t keep on top of it. And the applicator is a one time use!
Agreed. But tips can be reused - just let the liquid flashing cure and you can pry out the cured material quite easily - doesn't adhere to the plastic tips very well.

Small question from a novice. I understand from Huber that the wall sheathing joints should generally be taped before moving on to any subsequent construction steps, such as creating sill pans for window installations. In the video, I see that the joints in the wall sheathing are not yet taped when creating the sill pans. Any thoughts? By the way, Matt, I love your videos! I know that this is a rather picky question, but I continue to learn that attention to detail is a quality that you embrace and advocate (which I agree with fully).
I was hoping people would ask this.. In California I have nailing inspections. I would LOVE to cover those bottom seams before doing the tops.. Unfortunately I can't until nailing is passed and I wanted windows in this place quick.
I will be lapping backwards the flashing tape onto the sill pan, not too worried about it as this stuff does a great job of sealing. Lapping the way you would with other products isn't an issue with ZIP.

King stud nails on shear panel don't go too bottom plate ? No nails around Windows short nailed or by code?
I was always taught to go all the way up the sides. Not just six inches. I mean the top of the window is where water usually becomes a problem. So if you only go up 6” there is a good chance water is gonna get behind that tape and have nowhere to go. So it sits there and tots the sill. Right?

Is the roller sold with the tape?
I would employ liquid flash around the entire window opening, then install window, then again use liquid flash on the sides and the and top of the window. next install a lead coated copper head flashing.
I noticed when using both the liquid flash and the tape you applied the tape first then the liquid flash. Would it matter if you applied the liquid flash first then the tape (assuming there is enough overlap for the tape to "grip" onto structural members not just the liquid flash)?
The liquid over tape is preferred. You want everything to flow over not into.
Matt, if not using the zip sheeting, do you still use the stretch tape in addition to something else.

I feel you that the stretch tape is easier but it cost three times as much
Tape itself costs ~3x as much but saves equivalent on labor. Also, a moron can install stretch tape and not eff up the installation. Liquid flashing isn't cheap and it is messy and takes hours to cure (overnight to get really good cure), so it's the most expensive option.
We use zip tape on our stock cars.... its holding my nose pice on right now
Not related to the video but do you do anything with the under driven nails on the zip walls, or is that not an issue that an inspector would call out?
We'll talk more on this when siding, but over 1/2 way through the material we liquid flash. Anything under, we don't worry about.
If you do a window with no trim how would you do that I’m turning a barn into my house and really want that look

My house is under construction and the builder just finished framing roof trusses. It’s a 3 story single family home, the builder had mistakenly framed a window where a door should be and vice versa on the second floor opening to the deck. Is it possible to fix this during framing? To switch door and window location. Is it too late? This is about day 4 of framing.
Are you wanting to keep them the way they are or switch them back to they way they should be?
Either are doable..
If you want to switch them back to the way it was laid out prior, they can re-frame it.. The header for the window will be too small for the door, so they'll have to change that, but it's not a hard fix.
If you want to leave them the way they are, consult with whoever is designing your home. Have them OK the change.

I want the builder to switch them back to where they should be. Where the door is now should be a 72” wide window and where the window is now should be a 36” door. They had the locations flipped. It seems like they used the same size header 2x12s
I think they can just swap the framing with same material. I just don’t know if it’s going be a hard change because it’s on the second floor carrying all the loads from the top floor and roof trusses above.

No, it’s almost always up to our clients. We do have a say, but we leave the ultimate choice up to them.

Huber doesn’t sanction that. An important element o their system is the rough texture giving more surface area to imbed the tape when rolled.
I wonder how long the tape lasts? Roofing felt and cement more than 100 years , plastic sheet maybe 20 years and copper with solder indefinite. Tern also is for ever. Polymers deteriorate and maybe are food to something. Hmmmmm.

Acrylic tapes are supposed to last ~100 years
@@johnowens178 100 years might be a streatch but, Im in the PNW and we have pulled apart some old houses waterproofed with felt. Sheating usually looks like it did the day it was put up. If you know how to lap properly and take your time there is no need for all these fancy new products. Im my opinion they are just another product they can charge your for.

Any roller works. You just want to burnish the tape. Just like burnishing masking tape.
It’s a special roller it has z’s on the metal band. Something to do with the warranty
@@keithN6 Huber makes their own roller but it's nothing special other than the little 'z' it imprints in the tape once it's rolled. Nothing to do with the warranty - just easier to do quality checks to see if the tape has been rolled.
What if a guy used RedGuard or HydroBan water-management membrane in this application..? The '-proof' is in the pudding, so to say- it all comes down to the installer!

1:57 and the purpose of this metal strapping is it for CA mainly due uplifting? I don't think the house i live in has any strapping like your use. of course its not zip systems
Perforated Shear Walls: perforation in a shear wall, requiring ridiculous strapping.

Seriously? if you blocked out under the sill or with something larger 4x6? and rolled out your strap an 1 1/2 lower you wouldn't have flashing interference with a perforated shear wall. Mechanical flashing will always out perform chemical flashing for long term
