Ironically, that is exactly how much ancestry from Ireland I have from my Dad's side. The rest is German. Mom has a bit of Ulster Irish ancestry with her main heritage being...English. Also, Dad's family is Catholic, Mom's is Protestant (Baptist). But since I'm from the states, I always say I'm half-Missouri, half-Louisiana.
And? You’d be surprised what gets passed down, in differing degrees depending on location, with that amount of heritage. On my moms side I have a lot more Irish heritage (probably adding up to a 1/4) but no one really has anything Irish other than looks. On my dads side there’s a lot less Irish but we know there were some and oddly a lot of it has been passed down because they lived in a very isolated rural area. My family there still eats a lot of old Irish inspired meals (I had to trace them because some of them were definitely unusual for the area). If people are using their heritage to learn about other countries and other people isn’t that a good thing? Everyone talks about how Americans are ignorant (which, granted, many are) and yet get annoyed when we make an effort to be less so. Frankly I find very few international groups make any effort to understand American culture (I have never met an American who says they are from Ireland, only that they are “Irish “ in ancestry) and it only makes Americans less willing to look beyond their tiny piece of the earth. And I say this as an American making every effort to move out of this country XD
Some notes on the Irish language: - It is called Gaeilge - The Ó prefix in names is for males and for females changes to Ní - There is no singular word for yes/no - The communities who do speak it are known as Gaeltachts and students will go there to practice during the summer (big deal) - All signs and government docs must be issued in English and Gaeilge - And finally, it is NOT similar to English so stop saying the pronunciations are stupid or weird, it is LITERALLY a different language!! (Goes for names too like Niamh or Meadbh)
Has Ní been used in any surnames? For example, I can find references to O'Reilly and O'Kelly but none with Ní. Genuinely interested; wondering if you know of any instances of Ní (historical or modern).
CloudCharlie Well, my name is Murphy so it is O’Murchú as Gaeilge but if I was a girl it would be Ní Murchú. It is mainly when the name is fully Gaeilge and not partly english.
Mexico loves Ireland! Irish soldiers fought by Mexico's side to protect our country against US invasion. We had Batallón de San Patricio with around 500 soldiers, most of them Irish. They are most remembered as heroes. God bless Ireland.
We love you Wales (Cymru), and the Manx in Isle of Man, Cornwall, Brittany and the Celtic region of Spain Galicia, Asturias and Calabria (sp?) along with Scotland.
Different type of Celts so their more like cousins, where as the Scotty and Eiren are initially from the same band of people that settled in Brittania and Eire. It's also why the Welsh language is just called 'Welsh' even though it's a celtic language, it's not a dialect of like the irish and scotts language is.
13:56 It’s worth mentioning that we have a significant Brazilian community here in Ireland. Over 15,000 Brazilians live here and are the second fastest growing immigrant group, according to the 2016 census. 🇧🇷🇮🇪
I met my first Irish friend when I lived in Tokyo, he was just one of the funnest kindest smartest guy I've ever had the chance to hang out with and he always told me to visit Ireland, I finally went to Dublin, I really can't say enough of how kind everyone was, the food (yes the food) was great! We even got lucky with the weather hahaha it was sunny the whole week. We watched a play that left us crying like babies and honestly we can't wait to go back and see the other cities.
Originally, Irish surnames never had prefixes but then clans started splitting up and people started using names like “Mac Conchobhair” which means “Son of Conchobhair” and the grandson and all generations coming after that are called “Ó Conchobhair” which means “descendant of Conchobhair”. The prefix “Mac” was kept by some for some reason though. The Nic prefix is the female equivalent to Mac and Ní is the female equivalent to Ó, whenever a woman gets married, she will change the prefix to “Uí” and her surname to her husband's surname. The British came so everyone with an anglicized surname just uses the “Mc” or “O” prefix

Spaniard here. I’m not surprised about Spanish friendship being mentioned here. North-West Spain (Galicia and Asturias) has Celtic roots. Then Catholic Church happened big in both countries. Many Spaniards choose Ireland over UK to learn English (Never ending grudge with Uk up to this day…cough…Gibraltar…cough…) Basically you’ll never find a Spaniard thrash talking Ireland. PS. My HS Senior years School Trip was to the Aran Islands. How about that.
I must thank you very much for this comment, I happen to be blind and deaf since birth, and how I commented this, is that I listen to my friend who tells me the comment, so once again, thank you.
6:40 It’s kind of the same in Finland, where the Christian missionaries and other religious folks tried to Christianize our summer solstice _(”Ukon vakat”_ or ”Ukko’s bushels”), which was a very pagan holiday and involved lots of drinking and sacrificing beer to _”Ukko Ylijumala”_ (our supreme deity), but they only really managed to change the name into _”juhannus”_ (”St. John’s Day”). The drinking stayed, and is still a key part of our summer solstice (/midsummer). 🇫🇮🍻🇮🇪
In Mexico we love ireland and irish people, since they helped us in our war with the USA. Some streets are named after the irish battalion that helped us.
To any visitor to Ireland, they got the weather wrong. There are about 150 wet days (days with any amount of rain) on the east coast and 225 wet days on the west coast. And those wet days are spread fairly evenly throughout the year. There aren't any dry months here. The joke goes like this: the difference between Summer and Winter in Ireland is that in the Summer, the rain is a litttle bit warmer. Also it's a bit expensive here, about €4 - €5 for a beer. And we don't all drink Guinness. :)
They use stereotypes as a bit of fun, did it to Australia my country. Just have a laugh bout it. Can't possibly get everything 100% right, and tbh that would just be boring anyway.
Paulod1110 HD hey I'm Irish and I can make fun of Ireland too! Well I live in Kansas but I trace 90% of my ancestry to Ireland and my last name is McNutt!

In my home town of Tralee. We have a festival called of the Rose of Tralee, where a bunch foreigners come and try to become the Rose of Tralee. It is a joke to ask the Roses (the contestants), such as the Americans, "What's the criac?" My young cousin said that to the Chicago Rose and she said, very awkwardly, "Crack is a very bad drug that you should never try." We were falling over each other laughing. But don't worry, I went over to explain it to her and said its sort of an initiation ritual and we were only taken the piss. I believe she won that year became the face of Lí Strand milk for that year.
Ermin Dedic Bruh... Francisco Martinez because it’s our heritage. A lot of us are proud of it because our ancestors went through a lot to get us here. It’s nice to know where you come from. Additionally, it’s a nice way to learn about history and other cultures. Also it explains funny things in family groups like why my grandmother makes certain food dishes I haven’t seen anywhere else and why the men on my dads side grow red beards despite all being dark haired otherwise (that would be the Scottish ancestry)
Well, it's like this. I grew up just south of Boston, Massachusetts. There are pockets of families that speak Irish. Go into Boston (Dorchester) and 1/2 the city speaks Irish. So, we are immersed in it. It's our heritage too.
I think they claim because that is their ethnic heritage. The Irish seem to be good breeders so there are alot of them. I am not burdened with Irish DNA so I would never claim to be Irish. The Irish seem okay though.
There's a town called muff in Donegal. There's also a diving club in muff called 'muff diving club'. When we were younger, and for a childish laugh, we used to call up directory enquiries and ask for the phone number to 'muff diving club'.
I’m from the UK and went to Ireland and they are way more friendly than us! As soon as they hear a different accent they ask you obsessively if you’re having a good time in Ireland 😂 like you have to have a good time OR ELSE
IRISHTRYHARDCB We use to be scolded when grew up in the country for not saying hello and been friendly or been disrespectful against tourist etc ...THAT'S what I meant ! I didn't mean their literally checking up on people lol,but you'll find the older generation are modified when we're not been friendly towards outsiders, and rightly so !!
The best pub in ireland (or at least my favourite) is dirty nellys near bunratty Castle, the seafood chowder is soooo good, it came with taytos, and toasties with cheese and tomatoes, and if you visit, bunratty Castle is a good place to check out, they also have holiday homes, which is nice for tourists who are staying in the area.
Historical Fact: One battalion of Irish soldiers fought alongside the Mexicans against the U.S. in the mexican-american war, it was called "Batallón de San Patricio".
I'd never actually heard of that, surprised to find out it's true. Apparently the group was actually composed of all kinds of European immigrants who had deserted the US army (the Irish were the largest contributor of the group). They were evidently motivated by a combination of shared Catholicism (nearly all of them were Catholics) and Mexican promises for better pay and land. I swear the Irish always pop up in history where I don't expect them to lol... Evidently the battles against this group were by far the most difficult in the war and, given Irish immigrants constituted a very large portion of US forces, those battles were in a very real way battles between Irish immigrants.

Stephen Pentony It's not fair to ruin stereotypes like this...
I don't think they said any different...
Beer is much cheaper in Russia thank goodness. You can drink here without putting a massive dent in your wallet.
They use stereotypes as a bit of fun, did it to Australia my country. Just have a laugh bout it.

The most friendly nation on the planet. May Ireland rule the world
Ermin Dedic Bruh... Nobody can be the friendliest nation since you can neither quantify that, nor make sure it stays that way, nor account for those who it's unfriendly too (friendliest doesn't mean 100 percent friendly). A dictatorship like tgat also never turns out well.

Why do Americans claim to be Irish every time they talk about us
Francisco Martinez because it’s our heritage.
Matthew Ledden I may be one of the few Americans who doesn’t claim to be a small percentage Irish or Native American 😂
Theivesx A'Furay as long as you say “I have Irish heritage” and not “ I’m Irish” it’s all good
