Although I don’t have much of a use case for saws in my carry I’d be interested in seeing a test. You’re pretty thorough with that kind of thing and it’s appreciated. I know it’d be helpful, regardless of frequency of use.

You are so right these really highlight how inexcusable Leatherman and Gerber scissors have been from incompetence alone. Personally I think they highlight how truly underappreciated tools like the Leatherman OHT and traditional swiss army multitools have been in some circles.
The number of actual outdoorsman or hard use types who all favour well tested tools considered by the mob to not have had enough tools or be useless without pliers should have always been a guide. Carrying multiple tools that work is better than the "solve all" lumps of painful to use collections of mostly questionable bits and bobs they have been marketing.

I just ordered the DL30. The blade holder was the kicker for me. I don't have a ton of use for a wood saw but throwing in a metal cutting blade is going to help me out tremendously. There is a $6.77 coupon on the page that got the price down to $37.54. Now we sit and wait... 😄

Again, for me it's about the frame design and how the frame interacts with the pliers. If the frame of the tool is built like the Multiforce, it automatically becomes a mod tool without a pliers - for me. Most of these clones are fine for the use most of us put it to. I'd pay more for better specs, but they aren't strictly necessary for most daily use. If I had to make a choice, sadly, between a Leatherman with the proprietary bits or a clone with a true, locking, 1/4 inch driver, I'll take the clone every day. Not that I hate Leatherman, I've got - and use - almost everything in their inventory. You're right on target with your concerns - the clones are solving the problems and that is why they will continue to get better and be more viable, over time.

If you use a 1/4 (6x2mm) magnet the bits will easily fall out and get lost. I can tell you from experience. The magnet pushes the bit out so the detent just doesn't make as much contact as it should.

I just got a Daicamping DL30 which is the Leatherman surge copy. It is seriously awesome. Comes with the t shank changer and default is a really good 3 sided file. It also comes with a huge wood saw and fine metal saw. There's even a pocket in the pouch for them. It also includes a very complete 1/4" bit kit in the pouch. Finally it also came with extra interchangeable wire cutters and a tool which fit in their own slot in the pouch.
All my external implements are smooth and easy to deploy. The pliers is smooth and perfectly formed and and appears to copy the beefy surge.
All for $40. You really need to get one.

We reckon the tools are good as they are & functional as designed. We would purchase the DL1 but only after some usage then we will know its durabilty. We mod our generic to suit our daily use. As for a file we make it detachable plus we could replace it with other tools required (i.e. scalper, scraper etc). Cheers mate.!

I like Leatherman, but this tool is an example of how LTG refuses to believe they have no competition....they, imho, are overpricing their tools & think people will automatically gobble them up...I am not saying people will not eventually get an Leatherman, but at this price-point, the quality is good, & a nice way to get into multitools...at this price, sure I would favor a better steel...I understand the "Surge" version is nice as well...looking forward to your review....Good video, thanks! 😊

For someone like me, I think the price of the lower end steel is the better choice because for me these are backup tools... then again if it were higher durability steel, they'd have a chance of making it a main carry in my kit - maybe. I prefer the toolset on the Bibury with the hammer end instead of the driver (I carry a ratcheting extension with it and that gives me reach and torque), as you get the file/diamond file in addition to this toolset (minus the dedicated serrated blade). Out of all of this league of tools, that is my #1 pick.

    P. S. I won't pay more for the better steel, if I need one I'll have my pocket knife in addition, I even bought DL12 because it's a tiny bit cheaper ) also I thought like you do 11:19 you're right here! Also the effort you apply to cut some nails is less than with the replacable cutters. Also I thought the dimond file is a little bit useful for me than a huge sissors.

Good review as always. I purchased an earlier incarnation of this tool (2021) - with no replaceable cutters and the internal scissors. Decent enough, but wasn't sure on the longevity of the diamond file coating and also the scissors have a slight fault.
However, for £22 (roughly $27) it was a good deal, especially compared with my recent purchase of a Crunch, which doesn't really close level both sides (leaves a gap) and the lock doesn't release well on all tools - not what you expect for that kind of money. Honestly don't believe Leatherman's QC is as good as it was 20 years ago. And brands such as these are closing the gap.
Have just ordered the DL30, which looks like a Surge clone, outside scissors and swappable file/saw and a 1/4 bit driver.

great review. Regarding steel quality. I am on the fence. Certainly for a blade alone, a nice knife there is no question in my mind that the quality should be there and the price is worth it. On a multitool? hard to say. I will say that my interests initially would be: blade sharpness retention and the water resistance of the steel.

  • @paulandrulis4672

7cr17mov steel, .75% carbon. Leatherman uses 420hc now, which is only .46% carbon. Leatherman steel is basically equivalent to the 3cr13mov (.35%) steel. The old Leatherman steel for Wave blades was 154CM, which was an extremely great, very expensive, steel. 420hc is low-end USA stainless.

When would you use one over the other and vice versa? Also, which is more versatile and universally applicable? Does either one have limits and which one would you choose if you only could choose one?

I tried those "clones". At the end it's about what I want. I was looking for a tool that I can always carry with me in case I forgot the one or other tool in the workshop.
    Yeah...I do that sometimes.
I tried some clones and because I'm from Germany all tools that have lockable blades that can be opened with one hand are forbidden to carry them around. If I would put it into my Toolbox that would work. But no.
The big problem for me was the weight. Nothing to carry around all day.
I tried the Victorinox Spirit and the Leatherman Wave+ 2h.
My first choice was the Spirit. The Wave is nearly as light as the Spirit but also not as well made as the Spirit. You know about it. You did some tutorials on making the Leatherman tools better.
But the toolset of the Spirit sux a bit. I have way more use for the bitholder.
But then...there is useless crap on it. You say it in the video.
The file isn't really needed. I also fear it works anyways so fast off that you will never use it...except on that one day you need it or an emergency.
The other useless tool for me is the medium screwdriver. Here I see the genius of Victorinox. Because they didn't just put a chunk of steel into the Multitool, they added some nice features into it.
But at the end the Wave + made the race because of the bitholder as I have to screw around a lot😁
Ohh and thanks for the video. I liked it.

What made me not buy a daicamping and buy a swiss+tech 18 in 1 is that the daicamping advertisement misleads the buyer. At swiss+Tech, the entire tool is produced in 5CR15MOV steel, which has properties similar to 420HC. But in daicamping only the main blade has 7CR17MOV steel that looks like 440HC, everything else is made in inferior steel, even having 2CR13MOV that oxidizes and rusts easily. But in the daicamping advertisement they only put the best steel in big letters.

Don't buy the black version, the serrated blade is coated and useless till you grind it off. Mine is gritty and the pliers don't open far enough to be useful even after oiling and cleaning. Really disappointed that something so heavy feels so cheap and I miss having a file way more than I thought I would. I've never used a saw on a multitool, seems silly.

I bought this last year, with a view to hack it and make it UK Legal. There's a noticeable quality in the hand difference however not a bad tool overall. Still need to hack it and make it UK legal actually.

What’s your plan? Using a dremel to cut out the locks?

    • @k.hussain360
      @k.hussain360 ปีที่แล้ว

@@erebostd Well, initially I was thinking I'll try putting a washer over the locking mechanism, that way there should be enough tension on the blade to hold it in place. If that doesn't work, then off with the lock.

Hey I have a question, only because I know you're into modding your multi-tools.
I was thinking about replacing the blade on my Gerber center drive with a pair of scissors. Like the ones off the fantasticar in your scissor test. Do you think that the scissors in the fantasticar would fit in place of the knife blade on the center drive?
They're only reason why I want to do this is because I have to have scissors on my multi and i already care a knife on me so the blade on the center drive is kind of redundant to me.
Also, I knew you can put scissors in the inside of the tool, but you would have to modify that lanyard loop by cutting it off and i am not willing to do tat to a $115 tool especially since it's new lol.
I was just kind of hoping to get your thoughts on this type of mod and if you even think its possible?

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  ปีที่แล้ว

Hmm, the issue is scissor orientation, usually they are placed on the opposite side. A victorinox scissor (which has no side bias) would be the best bet.

    • @maxlvledc

Unfortunately Leather man warranty sucks in the Netherlands so never a leather man for me again i have a wave plus new out of the box which i can never take with me as i would mostly use the pliers but out of the box one screw that holds the replaceble wirecutters was broken and they would not replace or repair it for me.
