Starting your opera journey with Pavarotti is like taking your first trip in a car in a Rolls Royce.

There is no better way to start. But hard to find something that gets close. Jonas Kaufmann is really really good and Juan Diego Flórez might get to be the new Pavarotti one day.

"Nessun dorma" (Italian: [nesˌsun ˈdɔrma]; English: "Let no one sleep") is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot (text by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni) and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. Any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. In the aria, Calaf expresses his triumphant assurance that he will win the princess.
None shall sleep! None shall sleep!
    Not even you, oh Princess,
    in your cold bedroom,
    watching the stars
that tremble with love, and with hope!
    But my secret is hidden within me;
no one will know my name!
    No, no! On your mouth,
I will say it when the light shines!
    And my kiss will dissolve
the silence that makes you mine!
Just before the climactic end of the aria, a chorus of women is heard singing in the distance:
No one will know his name,
and we will have to, alas, die, die!
Calaf, now certain of victory, sings:
    Vanish, o night!
    Fade, you stars!
    Fade, you stars!
    At dawn, I will win!
I will win! I will win!

There is no better or worse being a tenor is a feat meant for very few mere mortals.
There was only one pavarotti, just as there was only one caruso or domingo . The difference with pavarotti voice was. Not just attractive to opera houses. But also for the generic listener and that to me is what seperated him from the others, his voice had it all.

I have a mother who has dementia and she doesn't respond to things the way she used to . . . things that she used to watch on TV or made her laugh, she doesn't really pay much attention anymore. I know people with dementia respond to music so I'm always trying to think of ways to stimulate her. She knew Pavarotti . . . and when I showed her this video of you reacting to Pavarotti's voice, she smiled and laughed. She kept commenting about your eyes bugging out when he hit the big notes. It brought me joy to see her react and to smile. So I want to give you a special thank you for your reaction! It was very entertaining. So much so, it even connected with my Mom. That says a lot.

A similar thing with my mom! She'd been in the ICU for a 2-3 days & was in terrible, desperate shape, on a ventilator. She wasn't responding to any treatment or stimuli.
She was a devoted, lifelong fan of classical music & opera. Nessen Dorma, sung by Pavarotti, was her favorite vocal recording of all time. I'd been talking to her for hours but it suddenly occurred to me to pull a recording up on my phone & I held it to her ear. She SMILED.
That gave me the hope & the impetus I needed to kick the flagging doctors & nurses into high gear & convince them to *keep trying.* She woke up a couple days later & I had her for 7 more months, much of that time communicating with me & even enjoying things. I played a lot of her fave music during that time & it made a huge difference, but I still think of Nessun Dorma as saving her life.

I've been "discovering" Pavarotti's heavenly voice for days. I cannot do without this experience. All the reactions are almost the same: as soon as he opens his mouth, our soul ignites. It expresses the most beautiful thing that Humanity can have: compassion.
It makes us all brothers and sisters.

There is so much more to opera than just the songs. There is pageantry and grace and drama and acting and singing and costumes and sets. Beauty is part of every experience in opera. I miss going to the opera. I love to dress rather formally and treat it as a date experience with my partner. I recommend giving it a try when pandemics fade and allow us to experience it live again.

My mom was from Germany and gave us a wonderful education and love for music. My first operetta was in 1969 at the Central City Opera House in Colorado. I was 13 and all dressed up. Die Fledermaus was the best intro into Opera. She continued taking my sisters and me her whole life. Taught us to dance in the kitchen. Lord I miss her.

I listened to so many Tenors throughout my whole life, and I was born in 1952 (Del Monaco, Corelli, Di Stephano, Vickers, Kaufmann, Domingo, Carrera, Giacomini, etc.). I started to listen to them at a very early age (4-5 years old) I always preferred Pavarotti!... The presentation you are listening to right now is his best performance of that aria, and it established a standard that nobody else could match so far (in my opinion and taste of course).

This is Pavarotti. It is like the best of the best. It is like Queen, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Guns N Roses and The Beatles. Just like any form of music, opera can be average but at it's best it is very powerful. Also check out The 3 tenors with Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. I grew up listening to opera as my parents loved it. I don't listen to it every day but when I do it moves me.

Luciano Pavarotti was a great singer, no boubt.
    Then, you know, I'm Italian...😎😁
But even the most incredible voice does not shine so beautifully without an extraordinary music like this Aria di Puccini.
I love your reaction and the words you said.

Your reaction is so beautiful and perfect because the words and music that Luciano sang caused the correct reaction in your soul, which you showed through your eyes and body language. You don't need to know that language -you KNEW what he was singing about. Yes, passion. Thank you so much, Jayy!!!!!

Long admired Pavarotti. Saw him in concert years ago. This is one of my favorite performances by him. This song is one of the greats. Aretha Franklin sings an amazing version of "Nessun Dorma." There's a video of her performance on TH-cam. It's titled "Aretha Franklin, "Nessun Dorma," LIVE 1998." It's a must-see for fans of Luciano, Aretha, and "Nessun Dorma."

Rest in peace Pavarotti a true legend one of the infamous trio The 3 Tenors . "E Più Ti Penso" by Andrea Bocelli and Ariana Grande is an absolute must Andrea's vocals is superb and my fav opera singer

Andrea is a great pop tenor but he isn't an opera singer, his vibrato isn't consistent enough and his voice would get lost with a full orchestra behind him without a microphone.

Andrea Bocelli is more in the genre of pop opera which is a mix of both, for example Con te Partiro. He does sing opera arias sometimes though, and does well imo. I personally like him more in pop opera songs than in opera arias. He has a beautiful voice, but I wouldn't consider him to have the same technical level as professional opera tenors.
Nevertheless he is very successful in introducing the public for the first time into opera and proves to be very versatile and creative.

You just listened to the greatest Opera tenor in the world. Sadly he has passed away but fortunately we have his recordings and will be able to share them with generations to come. No one can listen to this without having some kind of an emotional response.

I get choked up with emotion every time I hear this performance. Here is an English translation of the lyrics:
    None shall sleep,
    None shall sleep!
    Even you, oh Princess,
    In your cold room,
    Watch the stars,
    That tremble with love
    And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
    No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
    When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
    Vanish, o night!
    Set, stars! Set, stars!
    At dawn, I will win!
    I will win!
    I will win!
