    No edge protectors under the straps. Those ingots eat the hell out of straps. Guess the mega carriers have special straps that don’t need protectors over sharp edges

    • @demetriusdavis95
      @demetriusdavis95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve always used felt pads. But but some of them depending on where you get them from are actually smooth on the corners. If they’re rough or square then yea

    • @bobbygable3891
      @bobbygable3891 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      why would he even use chains anyways ?

    • @demetriusdavis95
      @demetriusdavis95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobbygable3891 chains dig into the ingots better than straps. Straps just put pressure on it but the ingot in an extreme situation can slide from under the strap, at least with chains the added friction helps keeping it from sliding. Depending on how long or how many pieces I either use all chains or a combination of chains and straps.

    • @RobCalhounPGH
      @RobCalhounPGH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the big ingots (AKA rocks) are not like sows. The edges are smooth. What you need to be more concerned with is heat when they're fresh. However, if they are requiring a tarp, these rocks would be cool enough that straps melting is not a concern.
      I used to pull these 60k+ (permitted) from Greensboro GA to Russellville KY regularly.

  • @billygomez4073
    @billygomez4073 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    No need for 9 chains and 5 straps in all when you exceeded what you needed with 9 chains...more work than needed unless you want to overwork yourself all the time..

    • @RobCalhounPGH
      @RobCalhounPGH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You must have missed where he said he was securing it as if the rock was 60k. Different companies have more stringent securement standards that go above the DOT minimum.
      I've NEVER seen an OVER-secured load come off a deck. I've seen a lot of drivers with dumb looks when the load shifted because they did the minimum or less "trying not to work so hard."

  • @aldridge950
    @aldridge950 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    60k load. Alot of weight for a flatbed must be over 80k gross

    • @RobCalhounPGH
      @RobCalhounPGH 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, well over 80k. The heavy loads are run under permit. Usually the permit is good up to 100k.

    • @RobCalhounPGH
      @RobCalhounPGH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aldridge950 They did just fine. The company I ran for pulling those loads (Metal) had all aluminum 48 x 102 Ravens and East with sidekits.
      Ours were all no tarp, so sidekit up or down depended on your own preference at the time. It was a little bit of a PITA if you had the kit up because you had to pull all the left side and the middle boards on the right, plus drop the tarp down all the way in the middle for the clamp in Russellville.

    Don't ever run a strap outside the rub rail and hook it outside like he did its actually illegal to do that your straps and strap hooks have to be inside the rub rail and hooked underneath otherwise you and the d.o.t are going to have a conversation

    • @demetriusdavis95
      @demetriusdavis95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Only some trailers specifically say not to use the rub rail “tarp bar” for securement. Some trailers also don’t have hook points to the frame so you have to go to the rub rail which is rated. And I’ve done my straps like that with dot inspections never had a problem that’s the way I was taught especially if the trailer doesn’t have hooks or other securement points under the rub rail or to the frame. As long as the strap on the which side isn’t outside the rub rails then you’re good, but this is flatbedding nothing ever perfect sometimes you don’t have a choice but to go outside the rub rail on both sides if the strap/winch may get in the way of your turn signal or if you have a step deck and your wheel well doesn’t have a securement point

    • @josephmassey6372
      @josephmassey6372 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To try to answer your question we have a guy that worked for DOT for 27 years and we have never had any problems with the way we hook our straps some States may say this is a legal but never give us any problems with it. So if my head safety guy that works for Western express Says that is OK then this is the way we're going to do it. And I really appreciate your positive comments.
