Thank you for the quality demonstration and video. Every year, when the sales come around, I waffle back and forth, on whether I not I want/need one of these scopes to "replace" my bad ass yet old school Fluke Combiscope PM3370A mainly for the desktop savings. Because of that I'm leaning towards the 1202X-E because it seems like a SOLID upgrade for a 2-channel scope. Even in the limited troubleshooting of digital circuits I occasionally find myself in, I don't know if I'd ever need the 4 channels, though I think about it! I'd hate to retire the old gal; the Combiscope does allow me to relive the nostalgia of my old college lab days!

Question: I want to do testing on various battery chargers, measuring amperage, voltage, frequency, while they are hooked up to a battery, and monitor the progress over a period of time, say a week. What should I look for in a oscillscope? I don't have much more application other than I am a ham radio nut. Any recommendations? Thanks

To use the bode plot function on the SDS1104X-E you don't need the specific little awg/signal generator (SAG1021I) that you control with the scope, but you can use any siglent signal generator that starts with the letters 'SDG'. Extra software options are also not needed.
You used to have a Siglent SDG810 on your bench I believe. I don't know if you still have it, but if you do, you could make a short video about it; it works really nice and it's a method to have a system that can do bode plots for about under $800 which is always a good deal.
(with programming and a computer inbetween people have made the bode plot feature working with other signal generators)
I also believe the SDS1202X doesn't have a web interface. Of course you can control it from software, but the SDS1104X-E you can control from your browser. Handy for people that don't use windows or don't want to install large software packeages.

Yes. My SDG1010 works fine with the SDS1104X-E (well, now SDS1204X-E as these models have exactly the same hardware. It's an easy fix to "upgrade" SDS1104X-E to SDS1204X-E, all options enabled, via just a web browser and the internal webserver, and a special python script). If considering buying a new scope, the 4 channel has a lot more features in the recent released firmware than the two channel. Also with respect to FFT. It's looks like that Siglent has abandoned the 1202X-E, as it very well could have the same FFT performance and logging features as the 4 channel versions.

@@DaSmik101 Yes I can. First of all connect your scope via Ethernet and connect to it via a browser. Just got the 1104X-E myself. This video is giving me just a little bit of buyer's remose now that I know I could have gotten a bigger screen. Not giving me buyer's remorse - four channel, dual ADCs, and "upgradable" bandwidth. The biggest fail with the firmware is that they won't let you make the bloody menu space go away. It would be absolutely delightful if you could just hit a button and have the reticle / graph cover the entire screen. It would certainly make up for the smaller size. That said, I still consider it money well spent, Siglent makes a quality scope.

I’m of course biased too since i have the 1104X-E, but I would choose it any day over the 1202X.
I’ll give you my two cents where i disagree.
6:16 The date of calibration and the equipment used is listed on the calibration certificate. Mine was calibrated by Yan Wang on 15/12-21.
13:43 Do you have the newest firmware installed? Mine shows the illustration of how the trigger works when you press the type button first time. and why would one care in the first place. Don’t you press to change the type anyway?
16:50 In the upper right corner it shows you the slope. I think it’s nice all the important settings shows together and you don’t need to go through all the menus to see them. And if in doubt you just hold down the buttons and it’l even tell you what the given function does.
17:30 The display isn’t small. It’s the size of most scopes in this class and price range.
21:00 I have poor eye sight and i have no problem reading anything on the screen.
28:30 The only reason to get the SDS1104X-E? No!
For about 120$ more (prices found on tequipment) you get double the channels, double ADC’s at 1Gs/s and 14Mpts, you can easily hack it to 200Mhz and all the options (AWG and bode plot functionality, MSO capability, WIFI capability). It has 1Mpt FFT vs only 16kpts. It has free serial decode. Two USB ports. The playback function is very useful - you don’t have to endlessly turn the multifunction knob to get to the point on the wave you want to see.
30:47 You complain that you have to press to many buttons to navigate the menus in the 1104X-E, but as you show the utility menus, the 1202x has a parameter missing where the “hole” to the right of the “do self test” is missing. They could move one from the second page there. only two pages is needed, but you have three.
My 1104X-E utilises every space on all 4 pages. I don’t think you have the latest firmware, because yours doesn’t.
Either way, the 1104X-E is not discontinued, and and they will continue improving the software. I might even write them about the probe divider issue and only because you mentioned it.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the great feedback! I don't think we disagree - I didn't mean to sound like I don't like the SDS1104X-E. Let me respond to each of your comments here.
Calibration - I know they are both calibrated, but it just didn’t show up on the back of the unit as mine did. No big deal:) I do like these Siglent scopes. I just wanted to show these side by side in case someone has the option to buy.
Mine does have the latest and last, but I don’t know about the SDS104X-E. I did show what version it had on the screen. Since the X-E model came after, I don’t know why the firmware would be less or not as complete.
I just like how mine (the X) model shows the icons for the trigger next to the word without having to hit another button.
The X-E display is larger than the older scopes as I said - but the 8” on my model is just that much easier to see. I don’t know why they would go back to the smaller 7” except that they were trying to cut costs. That’s also why they took away the 50 ohm input impedance option.
When I said the only reason to get the X-E was for the w1Mpt FFT, you are right - I did forget about the 4 channel option. You might be able to hack it to get the 200MHz and MSO capability - but neither scope can get the AWG to work. It is simply not available as it was first expected to. That’s why they came out with the external AWG to work with the Bode analyzer. Also, I don’t think the WiFi can be made to work either. They came up with a WiFi stick to do this. The free serial decode has always worked on both series. The Playback is available on both in soft buttons that I showed in the video.
As I mentioned before, the version of the X-E I used in the video did take extra button pushes that the X did not. Again I don’t know why the newer scope wouldn’t start off with the same firmware and improve form there. Maybe they were in a rush to get it to market. I would test every function as I didn’t find the bugs in mine until it was too late. Once they discontinue it they stop supporting it, so no more software updates :(

@@KissAnalog Yes the WiFi in the 1104X-E does work once enabled via purchase or hack. It requires a $15 USB WiFI dongle, I use one from TP-Link. It works great for viewing and controlling the scope from a web browser.
Also, as someone else mentioned, these scopes have different base operating systems, so the firmware would have had to be ported and/or rewritten. I imagine a lot of the code was reusable, but some not, and they likely make some concessions for things like screen real estate too. They also release firmware updates for this series fairly frequently, around 2-3 times per year, but seem to have slowed down now that it has matured. Last update was in May 2022.

What do you mean "can't prove it?" Everyone is hacking these things. These scope mfgs know people do it -- the company reps hang out on the same forums (e.g. eevBlog) that people discuss how to do it openly and in depth. They don't care -- if they did they'd have encrypted or otherwise made it impossible years ago, and they just don't. Most of these digital scopes from within a single family can be hacked, certainly Siglent and Rigol. The day I got them I upgraded my 1104X-E to a 1204X-E with WiFi, decoding, and MSO enabled (ofc MSO requires a $600 adapter to use it, so meh). Likewise my 3303X-E bench power supply was upgraded to a 3303X for the increased precision.

These reviews are just waste of time. Full 40+ minutes filled with almost nothing at all. "This scope has button here and this scope has button here...." OMG. I wander what are you using these scopes for anyway? Does not sound like an EE. Sorry for the "trash talk" but I am just frustrated that these day everybody is exposing themselves on the media... and yeah... okay.

Sorry you didn't like it. There are a lot of people that want to know the difference between these two models - as they differ only by an 'E' in their part number. Also, there are a lot of people that are trying to learn how to use an oscilloscope.
What is it that you want to see? You appologize for 'trash talk' but you do not provide any useful information in what you are looking for. So why apologize if you are only here to 'trash talk'? Don't expose yourself if you don't want to.
Have you seen my videos on Deep memory and/or FFT? I have a number of them on those topics. I can teach about any level of Scope use - so you only have to provide positive feedback and ask. Simple as that. Here's one on deep memory. th-cam.com/video/cZijqSDTLJw/w-d-xo.html

@KissAnalog Once again sorry. And why I am sorry? Nobody force me to watch your videos. It was a moment of frustration where I see that a lot of video content makers just have a very superficial knowledge and are not able to do a real review of a product beyond talking about the color of the buttons. Once again if you have enough people to watch enjoy. People who want to know more will look elsewhere or review the d..n thing at home. Good luck.

Thanks - again - this was not a review but a comparison between two models. As I pointed out I have many more more in depth videos as the one I provided the link. I challenge you to find a review that goes as in depth as my other videos. Keep looking and let me know when you find one.
