I Bought A New Oscilloscope! Siglent SDS1202X-E

  • Here it is the Siglent SDS1202X-E, a 200MHz 2 channel scope. Basically miles and miles better than my current Gould 400.
    They are about ~£380 on Amazon amzn.to/2nWybeR (UK) or amzn.to/2JZSoKd ($349 US) but I got myself an ex-lab test model direct from Siglent. According to the system information page it has only been turned on 12 times. Some tinkering needed - www.eevblog.com/forum/testgea... but Siglent have provided instructions so I am actually quite eager to do it. Wish me luck!
    It turns out that 'Likes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.
    I don't have a Patreon or a donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wish...
    If you want to get in contact Twitter is probably the best way @mrdavidjwatts

    I have this scope. Look carefully at the probe. there is a small brass compensation screw midway in the probe. Turn it with a small screwdriver to square up your waveform.

      I am going to throw a question out here. I have an analog phone line that developed a loud clicking interference during a large construction job. I believe that a nail might have gotten driven through two cables crossing them. I use a cable that includes 2 phone, 2 ethernet and 2 cable. The noise is not on the line coming into the house. I think diagnostics can be done using a meter on the millivolt scale but could an oscilloscope be used to find the line with the problem?, I feel that the interference is digital. I hope I don't sound like an idiot but the Verizon guy threw up his hands. I have ethernet, phone and cable connection blocks in the basement where all lines run into a box. Thanks, I hope this isn't confusing

    There is nothing "wrong" with the scope. You always have to compensate your probe. That's why you have the dedicated square wave in the front. On your probe should be a poti like on your old scope. Sometimes near the BNC connector.
    The time you asked: "why doesn't it trigger?"
    It was because you probably still triggered to ch1.
    I recommend watching some EEVBlog on TH-cam. He has some really good tutorials.
    Also try not to use the auto function. You won't be able to tell if it's bs you're measuring. Set your timebase and voltage to an expected value and then your trigger.

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I am aware of the probe compensation I think I mentioned it. The information from Siglent was '...But when measuring square wave amplitude, it is a little bit out of specs. A fine adjustment of a internal capacitor can improve this.'

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did send through some instructions and there is a nice long thread in the EEVBlog forum (link in the description). I might grab a 4 channel in a few years :0) Right now I am a little bit giddy about how different it is to my Gould 400 which I think came out in the 90's.

      There is a problem with units having serial number with AB in it. The later made units having serial numbers with BB has the problem fixed. MY scope I have also has the defect but there is an easy fix involving some trimmer caps inside that is well documented from the manufacture I just have not performed it yet.

    Wait until you play with the spectrum analyzer part (i.e.,FFT). Great for audio analysis and for vibration measurement since the vibs are in the audio range < 5khz. and the spectrum analyzer is only good up to about 20khz(?unlike a dedicated spectrum analyzer which can go to ghz and cost $30k). Plus has HUGE 10mpts capture memory compared to 40kpts in cheaper units.

    • @suzesiviter6083

      Thats wrong: the spectrum analyser can go upto about 250Mhz, seen it on other videos.

  • @silvertongues2

    I have this scope, I bought it for calibrating a few synths and have had no problems. However, I was designing a simple circuit with a UJT transistor (2n2646) as a simple oscillator and I wanted to see its resultant waveform. I was able to do that and all looked good, but the scope constantly goes into 'acquiring' mode and takes up to 30 seconds to refresh. It made using the scope really difficult as it couldn't keep up.
    Has anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening or what I maybe doing wrong?

    • @suzesiviter6083
      @suzesiviter6083 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a user problem as its been tested extensively in the EEVblog, maybe too many samples, filling up its memory?, I'd try lower memory depth or reducing number of cycles on screen, things like that.

    • @silvertongues2
      @silvertongues2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suzesiviter6083 I think I worked it out, I think the lfo frequency was too slow for the scope. Using the scroll function helped, and reducing the bandwidth setting of the scope helped filter out a lot of noise that was mudding things.
