    My husband is on the spectrum. We’ve been on keto for nearly three years and in addition to all of the other positive results we’ve experienced, most notably was the improvement in his asperger symptoms. He describes feeling much more calm, clear minded and in control of himself. I cannot recommend keto enough!!! This way of eating literally is a life saver!! Thank you Dr. Berg!!!

    AUTISM / EPILEPSY DIET:
    • 5% carbs
    • 15% protein
    • 80% fat (25%from MCT's)
    The diet could consist of foods, such as:
    • Fatty meat/fatty sausage
    • Coconut oil (MCT oil)
    • Tallow
    • Eggs
    • Fatty fish
    • Fatty nuts
    You would also want to add electrolytes, B vitamins, and trace minerals to the diet.
    (more details on the narration below the video)
    THANK YOU DR BERG!!

    I'm an older adult on the spectrum. MCT does help! HEALTHY Keto has gotten my gut microbiome in balance. Everything I've learned from Dr. Berg and applied has helped so much. I believe autistic people tend to get over medicated and it makes things worse in the long run.

      The diet Dr. Berg recommends, ist similar to the GAPS Diet, Dr. Natasha Campbell- Macbride uses to heal children with autism, ADS and other diseases. There are many ideas how you can apply this on children in her book and on the TH-cam channel of Marisa Tolsma, called " The bumblebee apothecary".
      The idea is, that those kinds of disease come from bad digestion. The toxins from incomplete digestion and a poor microbiome get into the bloodstream and as far as into the brain, were they cause damage.
      You have to fix the gut to heal.

    I have high functioning autism and can contest that a high fat diet helps me with eye contact and less stemming. It makes me more focused and less scattered and rigid. And Dr Berg is right about no gluten and casein (dairy). When I cut those foods out i noticed I started gravitating more towards people and being able to show more empathy.

    • @user-abde
      @user-abde 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You can eat dairy like homemade yoghurt that is fermented, from raw milk or kefir from raw milk. They have no lactose and no casein, because the healthy bacteria feed on lactose and casein. So when you wait 24 hours of fermentation, they are gone completely.
      Check out " The Bumblebee Apothecary", there are some vids about how to make homemade dairy that is okay for people with autism. I' m not related to that channel, but I highly recommend it.

    I have aspergers and you have described my own diet almost to a T. I have been tweaking and learning what my body responds to for well over a decade now. If I had to describe it simply it would be somewhere between your version of keto and Mark Sisson's primal blueprint diet. I do have a few tweaks that are worth looking into:
    -Skyr (Icelandic yoghurt, high in protein) is an acceptable form of dairy which causes little issues due to the way it is made. It has to be real skyr though, which most western brands are not selling.
    -Goat and sheep cheeses like feta, pecorino etc are fantastic additions to get your dairy fix with no dairy.
    -Switch between cooking with olive oil, coconut oil, and macadamia nut oil. Choose a different one to cook with or top with every day.
    -Become masterful at egg and avocado recipes. Combine them, mash them together, make unique guacamoles and super healthy omelettes. These are an everyday staple which can be combined in endless ways and provide a ton of essential nutrition.
    -You can goat and sheep protein powder if you search for it and it is delicious. This is for the more physically active of us who want an occasional protein shake or high protein desert but without resorting to whey or vegetable protein powders.
    Hope that helps :)

    I love you, Dr. Berg! I'm 43 and an officially diagnosed autistic (Asperger's). I'm addicted to your videos: I've been watching dozens of them daily, following your advice, continuing to make tweaks to my nutrition as I learn from you, and not only has my health improved many times over, but also my autistic struggles have dramatically reduced: my BRAIN is functioning clearly, calmly, and consistently, without ADHD-like distractions, my communication skills at work and when running errands have improved tremendously, I no longer fidget, I'm calm, I'm focused, and I'm no longer depressed. My muscles are getting stronger and I have so much ENERGY! I can't thank you enough! You've turned me into a keto & OMAD believer! I also *LOVE* your Veggie Solution *UNFLAVOURED* powder: it's earthy, not sweet at all, tastes DELICIOUS, and I crave it! I also love your cruciferous tablets, and of course, your wheatgrass juice powder. P.S. I wish you would make an *UNFLAVOURED* electrolyte powder: it's so sweet and I HATE sweet foods (love bitter foods) and I'm allergic to stevia (ragweed, pollen allergy) so it makes me nauseous & dizzy!

    As an autistic adult I work with the public, go figure. It's so hard. I use so much energy to do this and then I come home and just want to hide and spend a lot of time sleeping, not answering the phone, not running errands, etc just to recover that energy. Coworkers have no idea. Stressful days are especially taxing and I have trouble sitting still, focusing, eye contact...but I have noticed the MCT oil helps A LOT!!! And while I continue to work on cleaning up my diet the nutritional yeast helps me to temper reactions to loud noises, panic attacks are way down, headaches from the lights aren't triggered as easily, etc. Thanks so much. I thought about changing to keto diet for my 6 yrs old autistic child like a month ago. Since then, he has improved with speech and cognitive. It's amazing. I give him a lot of Omega-3 in form of pills but I have to break out the capsules and pour fish oil on to his food. I think I am going to try to give him Krill, no smell. Also, one or two chocolate fat bombs a day is great and he loves it. Reducing his craves for sugar snacks. We stopped giving him snacks between meals. I'll try to give him MCT oil later. I also give him ground lamb with tomato eggs soup and he seems very happy after the meals. What you mentioned in this video is so great, kidda confirming my theory of changing keto diet to autistic kids. I'll contact his special-ed teacher about this information so they will be happy about this and may be able to help other kids with same issue. Thank you so much!

    I am high functioning autist. I found that intermittant fasting with periodic prolonged fasting (48-72h once per month) and reduction in carbs helps me with sensory overload. I can much more remain unstressed and more focused with high amounts of noise. I think my understanding of emotions has also improved. I still fail handling mistakes but on the other hand I still eat way more than 10 grams of carbs, considering my high caloric intake.

    People should be prioritizing protein and limiting carbs, and the fats should be the balance. Too many people are pushing low-protein, and it's hurting people.

      Is 15% protein low? What is the percentage of protein/fat/carbs you would recommend

    • @CarbageMan
      @CarbageMan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ElectricBlanket1122 15% is not a quantity of protein. It's a ratio. Let's say 15% of 2000 calories. That would be about 75g. The infamous absolute minimum is .8g per kilogram bodyweight.
      Any form of exercise is going to require more. As we age, we require more because we don't utilize it as well. Thus, in order to thrive, it's often suggested that a more realistic figure is a gram per pound. Anyone who has weight to lose is going to need A LOT more than 15%-closer to 30%, because they're going to have to cut WAY back on carbs and not overeat fat.
      It's best not to look at a percentage, with regard to protein, but instead prioritize the actual amount of protein accordingly, then add energy with healthy fat.

    • @CarbageMan
      @CarbageMan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ElectricBlanket1122 By the way, just going by percentages, that's going to be a LOT of carbs. We're told by the fatphobic community that we should stay under 30% fat. I love this, the problem is a lot of children on the spectrum eat a super limited diet of mainly non-veggoe carbs and some protein. Many of them have eating jags where they'll only eat 1-3 foods. I have sturents who will only eat McDonald's French fries and chicken nuggets, for example. I think this keto diet could work IF it's started very young like in toddlerhood. Changing to this diet would be very difficult like any change with these kids is. But presumably they'd eat the keto foods if that's all there is. Hopefully they would. It'll be the parents not giving in to their child's demands for junk that will be the toughest part of it.

Removing gluten, pectin, MSG and other glutamates will dramatically improve your child's cognition, empathy, communication, mood, patience, creativity, desire for connection and affection, and will eliminate ADD symptoms. Once the OCD tendencies subside, many more foods will become an option for your child.

    The issue is that most autistic children are very picky. How can you have an autistic child follow this meal plan?

    Hi Dr. Berg. An off-topic: everytime I consume Nutritional Yeast I get rapid heartbeats and immediate stomach cramps then diarrhea. Other family members do not have this problem. Though I consumed huge amounts the first times. I need a good B1 source for my Panic Attacks and Anxiety and it's very inconvenient.
    Thank you for the wonderful work you do!

    Hi Dr. Berg, my niece has a six-year-old little girl who appears to be on the spectrum. I’m a LMFT in California and she lives in Arizona and is having a hard time finding somebody to help her. Her daughter will only eat chicken nuggets and french fries or she refuses to eat. There was a comment in here about someone feeling like their child had a bug in their brain and won’t let them eat anything else! When she took her to a therapist, they would only spoke to Jessica for a half hour every two weeks, but never met her daughter. Then they suggested her to take her daughter to psychiatrist for medication. They put her on some harsh psychotropic drugs, which increased her angry outbursts! When she seen the change in her daughter, she took her off the meds right away! It’s sickens me to see how the psychiatrist just want to push medication‘s and not try to deal with her problems with a more natural way!
    Do you have any suggestions to help get her daughter on a keto diet and for any doctors in Arizona that are trustworthy! Any help would be appreciated as my niece is really scared seeing what’s happening to her daughter and not knowing how to help her! Thank you

    I think this diet eaten by mother when pregnant and by child after stopping breastfeeding would prevent autism altogether.

      I agree. In my line of work I have families visit. Some have autistic kids and usually a parent too. Those families all have poor diets. They medicate their kids rather than cooking differently. The autistic parent stops the other parent from making changes. They throw tantrums like a drug addiction being told they can’t have their fix. The other parent gives up because it’s 4 against 1.

      It may help somewhat, but prevent entirely - I doubt it.
      In my special needs community of parents I have met many whose child was permanently changed after getting their shots in infancy.
      There are many environmental aspects to developing ASD imo.

      @@bkgdnoize111 Have these children been put on healthy keto at all? Including using DHA rich foods like wild caught cod liver? And using b1 as benfotiamine? And higher amounts of electrolytes, especially potassium? Dr Berg's videos on these are very helpful.

    As a retired spec ed teacher let me tell you it depends on the type of autism. Some will only ever eat just one food otherwise you see them getting violent.

    I've been diagnosed with autism 2 years ago, and up until the I ate a very poor diet, wheat products, refined sugar, cereals, but also some good whole vegan foods. This video is very interesting, because I was having problems digesting wheat products. I now wonder if its due to autism.
