  • I wanted to transfer a VHS tape to my PC, but when I put a Tape into my old VCR it spat the dummy and would not play or eject correctly. So I decided I had to fix it and made a video of a basic quick fix for the fault. Hope you enjoy.

    To keep the mode switch from oxidizing again, spread dielectric grease over the contacts. This should keep your VCR working for many more years.

    It's the same exact machine as a jvc vcr these machines I haven't had any problems with besides the mode switch and the heads needing to be cleaned

    Intersting video. I bought a LG GC990W for only $10 today, so can't complain too much i guess. This machine simply won't accept a tape..any tips please?

    You can actually pop the mode switch apart to clean it. Just lightly pry up on the plastic rotator and you'll have access to the switch. It can pop back in place too.

      @ggsumner1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The VCR King, You are correct. Pop the top off the mode select switch, use some toothpaste with a toothbrush to clean the contacts, clean away the toothpaste, and add some dielectric grease to protect the contacts. The contacts will stay clean for years this way.

      @@TheVCRKing , Try it yourself and see the tarnish removed as it is a mild abrasive. Of course one needs to clean all traces of toothpaste before replacing the top. It worked for me, and my VCR has now worked for many years. LOL yorself!

    Sorry to be another tech support comment.. But I have one of these units and find it very handy to digitise video using the HDMI port to a game capture card. However, I am having problems with my back tension arm. When the tape gets near the end, the arm seems to slip, causing the picture to slip and lose audio. Any idea on where one might be able to adjust or if there's anything I might be able to try in order to fix it? I was thinking maybe replacing the spring (if i can find a match) might work. Subscribing to your channel now :)

    • @vidcam
      @vidcam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HI George, No I have had no luck finding any replacement units. Also replacing the Laser unit requires alignment tools too. If your machine has HDMI Output, get a HDMI to USB adapter and connect it to your PC, then use something like OBS Studio to capture your VHS tapes to your PC. Does a pretty good job and its free

    • @janjohansson2567

      ebay has some spares, easiest is probably to find a similar device on ebay with a bad VHS portion and grab the DVD drive from that.

  • @bobby38bcn11

    Great video. I wonder how the vcr detects the k7 when you insert it. Is it mechanical or electronic sensor. And besides, I have an issue with the crank motor upper right corner : when vcr is turned on it goes turning and bumps skipping dents. Loud noise, and obviously the k7 does not load

    • @vidcam
      @vidcam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cradle that holds the VHS tape, as you start to push it in , it blocks the infrared LED b/t the Tape end sensors on each side of the eject assembly, thus starting the load motor. If that noise is from the DVD unit on the left it could need a new belt. If it is the Loading motor under the tape mechanism, then your VCR mech is out of alignment.

    • @bobby38bcn11
      @bobby38bcn11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx Allan 🤗
      The infrared LED is holding in the center blue plastic, right ?
      The noise is from the loading motor, upper right under vcr tape. Its endless gear gets blocked because the white cranks are blocked, so the motor tries to force it and skips few crank teeth before stopping
      I will try to clean the black sensor you showed, but I'm concerned there is other issue(s)

    • @bobby38bcn11
      @bobby38bcn11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe I'm lucky and the sensor is ok, but when the loading motor fails to initialized (can you elaborate on alignment comment?) then the firmware decides to disable any further loading. If I can solve the init phase, when the loading motor gear get stuck maybe the sensor will activate load...

    • @janjohansson2567
      @janjohansson2567 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The purpose of the motor on the right is to change mode (which includes accepting/ejecting the cassette). If that motor moves but nothing else moves, there must either be a mechanical error (maybe broken gears, or something is out of alignment), OR, something is wrong with the mode selector switch causing the motor to try to change mode beyond the first or last mode.
      I would check all the gears carefully, make sure the cogs are all there. Make sure everything is lined up (check with service manual for the correct "default" alignment). Clean or check the mode selector switch.

    • @vidcam

      Could be the Eject switch (if you push the front panel near the switch does it Eject then?) , Could be the Mode Switch needs a clean, But normally that would only happen if it was changing modes,

    • @janjohansson2567
      @janjohansson2567 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "ERROR" has been displayed to me when the machine gets confused about what state it is in, i.e. mode selector switch is probably bad or dirty, or the VHS mechanism is not aligned properly with the switch (note that all the gears and everything in the VHS mechanism has to be aligned properly, the mode selector also has to be in a very specific position when you put it all together. The proper alignments are documented in the service manual.

    • @Allan-
      @Allan- 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say it could be a Capstan motor fault, but I assume it will accept the tape and eject it ok? Try cleaning the Mode switch as I did in this video. Also check for sticky stuff on the Video drum, ie the big silver thing. Maybe your tape is damaged and is causing the fault.

    • @NunYa953
      @NunYa953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a bad capacitor(s) on the power supply. They may not always bulge so you'll need an ESR meter to find them.

    Who makes the VHS mechanism? LG? Or someone else?

    • @janjohansson2567
      @janjohansson2567 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most likely LG, the same assembly is used in almost all LG DVD-combos as well as even some pure VHS players. But it is also used in devices sold under other brands.
      You can even see the erase-head (green plastic thing to the far left), this is present on all units despite being used on some devices that does not support recording to VHS tapes. The connector to that head is just hanging, literally not hooked up to anything on the main board :)
      There are tiny variations though, some have an auto-head-cleaner (basically just an additional plastic part), and for some reason some have different sizes on some of the gear. I'm also not sure if the same drum is used for PAL and NTSC devices or if they are different.

      If it is similar to the RC689, find a Capacitator in the Power supply board, C127 it is a 2200 uF/16V and you may see it has a swollen top. Replace that and see if it comes good. It is very common with a lot of these units. If you have a ESR meter, test it and others around it. Best of luck

      @@msfyn If someone cleaned the head and video is gone after that, that sounds like ruined video heads :( (unless they unplugged the cable to the drum and forgot to reconnect it).
      Those LG players are a bit interesting because they are not so terrible to have any obvious design flaws, BUT they don't have the greatest quality either so they do break quite frequently and it's almost always a different problem :) They are also fairly easy to work, and they share a lot of parts with sibling models so spare parts are quite easy to find. If you have 6 broken machines you can probably get quite a few of them working well by just swapping parts :)
