This video is a masterpiece. I pulled my toshiba dvr out of storage today and it was malfunctioning. I found this video surprisingly fast. I cleaned the mode switch as demonstrated and when I saw the color of the contacts change from black to shiny copper I was optimistic. I put it back together and now it works perfectly. Not an easy fix but very satisfying. It is a true blessing that there are people like you who put in the time and effort to make repair videos like these. Thank you 12voltvids, greatly appreciated!
I did it! Yesterday I repaired a Hitachi VCR with dirty mode switch, and with your video for information and some courage, today I took apart the Toshiba VHS DVD Recorder combo and it works now too!!! Thank you so much!! Only had 3 screws leftover. LOL!

Heyyy. Not hating on you but get panasonic. I had funai and sony and both tore my tape appart and stopped working :/
@@koppo5657 Funai machines actually work okay once you know what their weaknesses are and how to address them. But, there is no getting around the fact that they are cheaply built machines with thin sheet metal parts.
Sony machines are generally good performers when they work. However, older age tends to be a liability as they are prone to having broken plastic parts.
Some Panasonic machines are usually okay mechanically but tend to develop electronic problems, especially with leaky SMD caps. That's what can make machines like the AG-1980 something to actually avoid; they are splendid when they work, but they develop problems with leaky caps in their video circuits that are extremely difficult to repair, if not impossible in certain cases. The machine winds up being scrap because you may need to get a part specific to the model that Panasonic doesn't make anymore and hasn't had in stock for years.

@@Watcher3223 They actually one of the few that has S video inputs and DVD Recorder is made by Panasonic including the HDMI board and even suspect it the main board is as well as all main IC’s are by Panasonic. They not as bad as people make them seem to be. The player only are the not so good ones as those are plastic frames and etc. All modern VCR’s are cheaply built cheap since the mid 90’s and Funai was last to make VCR’s as last one was built in 2015 and they stop production.

I have the same unit with the Magnavox brand, but made in Japan by Funai Electric . I modified it and installed a macro vision buster . It is still working as new ! These units can go for a long time with proper maintenance .
There's no way yours's was made in Japan. None of these Funai units were made in Japan. They were all made in China and always flimsy, particularly the mode switches.
@@TheVCRKing You are wrong my friend! Funai did manufactured goods in Japan as did Shin Shinaura Electric Company. They had their own branding but as Sanyo did a lot of manufacturing work for other companies including Sharp,Sony,Toshiba, Matsushita, Hitachi and others Japanese and USA and European brands . They did switch to China for economic reasons later, but they DID manufactured in Japan. My unit was built in Japan by Funai and has the Magnavox brand in the front, but inside the board and motors have the Funai branding.
What a coincidence. After watching this video, I stopped by the local Sally Anne an found one of those combo units for less than $20. I've been trying to find a cheap and decent s-video to hdmi converter to watch my old vhs movies on the big screen. No luck, but this thing solved the problem for me. Great picture!

Very helpful video. After seeing this, I was able to go only as far as getting the faceplate off and then spraying contact cleaner under the board at the mode switch. Then I moved it back and forth a few times with a screwdriver. Now it works. I know that's not the reliable way to fix it. But I only need a few usages out of the VCR to digitize a few tapes. And this sloppy way of doing it took much less time, obviously.

yes when you take things apart i want to say well done finding were all the screws go back were they come from great vcr repair!!!!
pretty much just put them wherever.
no way those are going back in the correct places. some end up too short and some stick out.
I use a Charlie and Mark the screw holes.

That’s been the question on my mind ever since I started watching his videos. I use a magnetic mat with a dry erase marker if it’s more than the cover screws.
It's amazing how much simpler the mechanisms of these late-model VCRs are compared to machines from the '80s. And how miniaturization has taken the VCR's electronics from multiple large boards to less than a single board the footprint of the VCR.
Those machines were part of our lives many years ago. You´re now part of our life.

Hello . After watching your excellent video, my friend took apart my Toshiba DVR 17 with the same symptoms of chewing tapes. He stacked a ton of parts on the kitchen table and after cleaning the mode switch, and then re-assembling, it now works. Thanks for your excellent videos.
Thanks for the comments. That is the reason I do these videos, to help people keep their aging equipment working in an age where everything is disposable and the service shops have been driven out of business.

Bought a vcr DVD combo today from a thrift shop and looked forward to watching some old VHS tapes. Unfortunately it just ate the tape and powered off. After watching this video and following the instructions, the vcr actually works! Turns out it was the mode switch and it just needed to be cleaned. Thank you!
Also, you can get contact cleaner from Lowes or Home Depot.
I don't know if they carry it. You can probably get it from Amazon and for sure electronic parts distributers.

Hello David I repaired in the mid 80s also Funai VHS Videoplayer (a silver box with Eject, Rewind, Play, Forward, On/Off in a Black Plastic Box) - the most defect was the toploader plastic lid was broken. Other problems are japan blue trimmer are defect. I change a lot of them here in Austria! Super Video I've had a company for service radio&TV. Best Regards and thumbs up 385. Volker from Vienna
Thanks this Long Version. Especially for Projects which I haven't done before, it educates as to what is Really involved. I also use a Dental Pick, for scraping. For contact cleaning, I start with a soft 'pink' pencil eraser, then finish up with ISO and a Q-tip. I'm seeing a lot of equipment similar to what I used to own! ;) Yes, we have a Consumer Life-Style, nowadays, sadly... We also picked up some fresh Salmon, but Pan Fried it, rather than BBQ. Thanks this video helped me get my vcr going again I didn't wanna throw my vcr away because it was a dvd recorder, the vcr doesn't eat tapes now thanks again
VCR/DVD recorders are desirable and valuable when they are working. I have 2 now, both fully functional. Only downside is they won't record protected tapes onto dvdr.
Great video, interesting to see a VDF on somthing made in 2011 aside from not having a digital tuner 😎.

Excellent Video !! I'm now retired, but was in the Copier / Printer repair business forty years, today's printers and copiers are almost considered throw away as well, life span of 3 - 5 years, that and the new ones are so complicated you wish you'd never taken it apart. The manufacturers are using these flimsy machines to sell the replacement Ink or Toner cartridges and it's where they make their money ... the ink and toner are relatively inexpensive but the manufacturers change the cartridges around & install chips to make Generic (cheaper) inks not work, 3rd party manufactures come up with ways around the protection (copyright) chips and then the manufacturers push a Firmware update over the web to lock out the generics, and the process repeats !! - I clean and oil fans the same way, and as far as the screws ... ever have one or two left over ?? ( I used to prank the new techs by adding a few extra screws to the pile when they weren't looking ! ) What have I got to show for 40 years ? Bent, and calloused hands, bad back, etc. I too have boxes of used parts and a 20 pound box of assorted nuts and bolts ( not left overs but from tear-downs ...
Still using my 15 year old Samsung clp510 color laser with both side printing. It has been turned on 24/7 since new. Sleeps 99.3% of the time. Real workhorse.
I hear you are the back pain. 20 years of packing heavy crt sets took its toll.
I had no idea the computer fans were repairable. I've always thrown them away, will have to attempt a repair on one some time
On the one hand, this helped me fix my tape-eating Emerson VCR, so thanks! On the other, I have this exact type of VCR DVD recorder combo (it's a Magnavox ZV427MG9), and I followed all your steps today to try to fix the tape-eating VCR, but now the unit powers on for about 10 seconds then powers off by itself. Won't stay powered on. I don't know what's wrong. Didn't have that problem before. I guess something electrical. Oh well.
Double check everything.
I have a Sharp VCR/DVD player combo unit I got for Christmas in 2004. It's been sitting idle in a box for years. I have to get it out and get transferring tapes to my computer before my tapes degrade. Probably will have a dirty mode switch, seems to be common on vcr's. I'll have to mark all the screws where they go because there is no way I could remember where they would all go like you did!
My mum's cousin owns a computer business and he leased out IBM laptops to businesses, and after a few years he would get them back and sell them. So, many family members, and their friends got good laptops for cheap. I have taken many of them apart to fix certain things on them, over the years. Certainly a lot of screwing involved. I still have a little stack of half a dozen old clunkers.

I fix noisy/growling fans in exactly the same way - 3 in 1 oil is great stuff.
The JVC mv100/mv150 have the ATSC tuners as well as HDMI output on both DVD and VHS the Panasonic DMR-EZ37VS has also a ATSC tuner but no HDMI.
I think Funai did make a revision with ATSC tuner as matter fact I know they did as worked on one 3 years ago just don’t remember what year it was? They made different revisions of these as they changed as few things over the years and last one was a 2015 and then they stop production of them but those they took the tuner out completely.

Mine has a blown 4700uf 6.3 volt cap in the power supply board making it inoperable. One is on order and I hope to replace it myself. Mine has a digital tuner in it. These sell for $200 to $1000 on the internet.
I had funia made VCR/DVD recorder form 2009 and the VCR could output via HDMI and component video. On mine the composite video out stopped working when it was only couple years old.

i don't know if it was made by tosh but it's not as nasty as some of the ones i've repaired for people.
Cheap ones have the mains p.s.u on the main board, something i really don't like, it should be isolated.
I've never seen one with a fan!, the tosh is better again.
Dvd recordings do look decent, you can transfer two tapes at the same time with identical quality :-)
The only thing about the units is the dvd recorder is often special and using one from a computer tends not to work.
The firmware is non standard to computer drives, annoying.

Thanks a lot. I use exactly this model - purchased in 2010, And you won't believe VCR won't play after few years of not using it :). Rest works brilliant anyway and is so much useful that I am not in mood to risk such job. May be if I have one more just in case. You didn't mention HDD or this one was without?

I see gray/black stuff on the video heads and it turns out to be dirt, but i clean it with paper multiple times to make it COMPLETELY perfect. Because i noticed when you pause in slp, there are staticy lines going down and that goes away when i clean it and even on a crt you can see it.
How do you remember which screw goes where? Looking back at the footage?

I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ48V Video and DVD recorder - Supposedly It was the top line unit back in the day from London Drugs - Was that a good buy - What are your Thoughts on this Model ?
I have a Hitachi VT-MX424A which does not turn on. My first guess is the power switch. To get to it I will have to take the whole machine apart.
watching your videos repairing magnavox ZV427MG9 units but haven't found one that covers my unit's problem.
Tape loads and seems to get real tight making a sound as if the tape is being stretched and stops.
After about 5 seconds the unit shuts off. When turned back on, the tape ejects ok. I have the unit apart now and the mode selector switch silver contacts not Shiny but looks like coated with a light dull gray coating. Used a brass brush and seemed to get very fine powdery substance off but tough. Waiting to hear from your reply before reassembling if it may be something else.
Can you suggest a fix?
Any thoughts on where to start looking for the problem when the power, mode lights, and clock are flashing on a Toshiba DVR620KU unit?
i have a sony ev-s3000 on my bench and it wont load tapes nor will the head spin, i will have to check the alignment and the mode switch and the guy that gave it to me already had it apart, i will have to digout a service manual for it

I have a JVC DVD / VCR Combo that is laid out a bit different than the one you show in this video in that the VCR section and DVD section are reversed. The Model Number is HR-XVC17SU. Can you tell me if the Mode Switch for my VCR is in a similar place or in a different place than the one you show in this video. FYI, my VCR is not releasing the tape from the transport mechanism when the tape is ejected, so the tape gets caught on something and you can't pull the VCR cartridge out without damaging the tape. Thank you.
Hi I have managed to almost take the mechanism out of a JVC HR-S860 SVHS VCR, i had to take out screws from the circuit board, it was a headache, i am wondering how do I remove the plastic tabs that hold the mechanism in place and is accessed by the circuit board, the tabs I am having difficulty removing. what do I use, please reply.
Did funai make Magnavox vcr's i have one that shut down on me but i'm afraid the loading gear broke. which makes me think the mode switch is just part of the problem
i have seen a video on YT. where some one did buy a VHS machine with a ethernet port mod install. what is the ethernet port for ???
Why not cut some holes in the bottom of the case? Just so you can easily get to those two screws that are holding the mech in place. I bet it would make the job a million times quicker.

I have a JVC DVD / VCR Combo. The tape eject mechanism is ejecting the tape before the tape is wound back up inside the cartridge so the tape gets hung up inside the VCR mechanism. I figure maybe the Mode Switch is the cause. Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem is?
There are a ton of these on ebay listed for parts or repair. Most are probably the same thing.
Yup but many have had parts picked. Know someone that bought a beta to get the head drum off only to find out that the seller had already removed it. Tried to file a charge back and couldn't because it was bought as a parts machine. Never said it had to be complete.

HELP!!!! I took my Emerson TV/VCr combo apart to clean the mode switch due to the fact that the tv would turn on and channels would change but as soon as a tape was inserted the vcr would try to read then the tv would turn off. I successfully cleaned the switch and put the tv back together. Now my tv hums and buzzes and won’t turn on at all!!!!
I have an 8mm VCR that will take the tape, but does not feed to the head. I press play, and it shuts off, and the power indicator light flashes. Upon turning it back on, the tape ejects.
Is that typical of a mode switch issue?
The 8mm VCR in question is an Optimus Model 801 - Looks exactly like the Memorex Model 801

I have a Panasonic PV-7450 I've been working on here and there. So far I've fixed everything except play fast forwards and I have no idea how to stop it from fast forwarding. It's saying play but is going way too fast
It sounds like the vcr adjusted the tracking at the beginning of the recording.

Do you know how brilliantly skilled and knowledgeable you are? I used to work for a couple of electronics repair shops and worked out fine. I started my own sole proprietor shop dong the same work that you do. However, due to too few clients, I never honed my own great skills in repairing electronics. My company is Frank Reiser Video/Audio Service, which I started in October 2004. Most electronics that I work on is unsuccessful. I find that when I work on electronics, my worst problem is with reinserting screws into the plastic back panel of TVs. I watch your videos because I am looking for a job in electronics repair not in video and audio service since there is no money in that type of business, but the skills are all the same across the broad spectrum of electronics troubleshooting and repair. I am applying to jobs because there is more money in working on electronics in all types of industry. Thanks, Frank.

I have a question. I have a Toshiba Dvd/Vcr Combo Model. Certain VHS tapes I play in it have this gray fuzz at the top, about 20% of the screen. Everything that is supposed to be where the gray is was curved (Literally, the movie was curled) like twisted. On the left side of the top, I see this black diagnal line Covering like a photo frame of the gray.
EXAMPLE: If there was a flower on screen, it would show the flower as normal, but where the Gray is, the pedals would completely stretch out.
Is this a VCR or VHS problem?, because like I said, this only happens with abous 25% of my VHS tapes.
The tapes that suffer from it were possibly recorded on a slightly out of alignment VCR. Thus, playing them on another VCR might fix it. However, anything modern (made after the turn of the century) is not particularly good at VHS playback anyways and sometimes it's a miracle it even works somewhat. You can try any older plain VCR and connect it to the combo unit if you want to dub the tapes to DVD.
@@martinweizenacker7129 Yes, My Vcr DVD combo was made in year 2006, which would definitely make your thesis correct. I am a collector, and will never dub my VHS tapes to DVD. I have enough DVDs already lol. I love the VHS format, its just I want to enjoy it full experience. Thank you for the help, I will look into older VCRs

I have the same unit, but itnfails to burn, it burns 5 seconds and error pops up cannot burn on this disc. Either a dvd-r or dvd+r, tried maxwell and other a brand discs

And I thought that the Dell All-In-One PC and monitor I fixed for the stepson had 800 freaking screws to get to the #%&*$@! power supply module that one of the main, weird-ass flat and large diameter ( And that I doubt That I could have found a replacement for) capacitor that had puked everywhere. I found a replacement OEM power supply that was an updated design with a cable that no longer reached the connector on the main system board. Much cable and connector rigging followed. Then I watched this teardown. Not sure I want one of these now.

I can certainly make one. What type of equipment are you using? Stand alone DVD recorder? Combo VHS/DVD recorder? VHS deck and computer with capture card and a DVD burner on the computer? VHS deck and digital 8 / mini DV camera with firewire interface to capture?

How the hell do you keep track of which screw goes where, when you reassemble the units?! Always baffles me.
I'd misplace everything. Good news is, with cameras so cheap, now you can record the whole disassembly process - from multiple angles if you want - and if you have questions you can replay the disassembly to see where each bit and bob came from originally.
47:45 I got at least 3 of them , they are not longer sold in US (still being manufactured) because entertaniment industry ges toward ...as ..Homer says "Internet ? does that sting still work?", that´s streaming.

Dave, have you figured out a simple way to REVERSE the video in real time and put every screw exactly where it was removed from ? it would be like us viewers putting YOU in reverse replay. Now back to that salmon recipe Chef Dave ! J K
Looks like if one removes the entire back panel one needn't remove the tuner and fan, except for one screw from the tuner.
Hmm, maybe I can think of a better way to fix a VCR/DVD combo machine... I got it! Go down to any thrift shop and buy a bunch of 'em for a couple of bucks each and find the one or two that are still working, then chuck the rest.
Done.
So much screws!
48:10 Lost the Sony DVD REcorder RDR - GX360 remote.-...couldn´t set recording speed !!! Orderd a new Sony one an no one told me that had to be programmed (Command 1 2 3...) . After that I could transfer tapes. LG machines use the same DVD recordcer from computers, just a SATA connection.
Those are a pain. I had to fix one 3 times once. I finally took the felt from a cassette tape and cut it down to fit under the contacts on the switch so they would make good contact. It still works but what a lousy design.

Parts machine worth nothing. Can buy 50 working machines for 30.
