Great video Dave... When I put on and remove springs like you have in the back of the mower.. I use a SHOE STRING 👞 👟 to remove and install the springs... it makes it SUPER EASY to stretch the springs... let me know if you try it and how it works for you. I do it that all the time now when possible.
Thanks so much for this video. Also thanks for asking if I had seen it. As I went back I finally found it and apparently I had started watching it and something around here happened and I lost track of it. That was the week we had two French drains installed, my van's fuel pump went bad and needed to be fixed twice and then our washer quit working. So that was a frustrating and expensive week for us. So now I am catching up on my videos. I have a Murray 6 speed that I need to remove the transmission and see if I can repair it. So your video showed me lots of tips on what to do and what not to do. Great job and thanks for showing it to us. I will not remember where things go as much as you so I figure I will use a lot of different color nail polish to help mark where springs and other things go. Not sure I will have the hand and arm strength anymore to do the springs but maybe I can get a neighbor to help some. This will be a good challenge for me. Thanks again for the video and all the information.
Dang, you had a lot going on that week. Your 6 speed is a totally different animal than this hydro. Your speeds are controlled by 2 different belts, 2 sheve pulleys and tension. My experience with those is either belts or if the rear-end is clunking or grinding its toast. You can put a different rear end in but some of those have brakes on different sides so you have to make sure you have the right one. Good luck
Hey Dave, that was a big job. It was interesting to see how they work. Getting that long spring on looked like a chore lol. The hydrostatic trans is a real piece of engineering. Looks like you could use some rain, We've had too much here.LOL. Looks like lots of projects. Take care.
Hi John. Kind of a big job for sure but it's just nuts and bolts pretty much. Yes very dry and hot again this summer. All those projects are done and sold already. Have a great weekend my friend
@@davessmallenginerevival2847 it is something that I might eventually do. I don’t have a way to get riders to my house, I have done some work on a few neighbors riders, mainly carb work and other fuel related issues.
Not a bad project for an afternoon. So do you ever tear into the old ones to find out why they are wore out? Good job on the video by the way, tough to do things one handed. Some don't realize what we go through to get that award winning shot. Thanks Dave. Stevo
Hey Stevo. The pumps go bad on these hydro gear hydros. They are a different animal than the tuff torq hydros. At least the tuff torqs are serviceable, the hydro gear one really aren't, other than changing the fluid. Thanks my friend
at 23:37, where does that yellow/black wire connect? My fan broke and apparently took out that wire. I can't tell where to connect it back to? Would that wire being off cause there to be absolutely no power to the tractor from the battery? (no lights, no turn-over, nothing) I replaced the drive belt and wanted to move the tractor just far enough to see if I installed it correctly...was moving and tractor shut off completely in an instant......no sputtering, or idling down....running...then completely not. I'm guessing the fan cut what wire and it took out all electrical?
Do you have any more of the good hydro gear transmissions left you want to sell? I have the ltx 1050 kw with this same one! LOL I tried to change the fluid with no luck, once it heats up it doesn't go forwards or reverse unfortunately.
Can you tell me how far from the top of the tranny fill plug the fluid should be after changing it? Also, should I put any of the oil in the plastic expansion resivour if the trans is full of 20-50? excellent video! Liked, sub'd & belled
Do these transmissions come in other models? Im having a hard time finding one. What are they actuality called, model wise, or how can they be researched to find one. Im at my wits end here..bought the story it was in great condition from the seller. Replaced the drive belt pulleys, drive belt, drained and replaced the trans fluid, and brake assembly...etc. even a new tranny cooling fan. It just wont perform under any contion other than flat ground and short grass. With the deck raised & pto off, its slow, weak and stops dead at the slightest incline. Please help!
I believe I said in the video it's a hydro gear brand, yes they are in other models but may have different connections, if it's a tough torq brand they have several different models and the tag is usually glued on the back of the Trans. Unless you know what you're doing and what to look for it's going to be hard to do yourself. Best option is to find the same model mower with a blown engine but that's not always fool proof as they could have put a different trans in it, but you could do an engine swap then I guess. Good luck
@@davessmallenginerevival2847hank you. It's the exact one in this video. Double checked by going from your video to my tranny... everything is the same down to the brackets, bolts, linkage & brake assembly... The motor runs perfect but the tranny whines as it tries to move. Any advice on how or where to get a tranny? I am more than capable of the swap as I've working on all my vehicles and equipment, my whole life, including engine rebuilds and restoring everything from classic motorcycles, boats, cars, trucks, waverunners mowers, weed eaters, etc. I should note all the parts I've replaced on this sltx 1054vt have been from my local cub cadet dealer near my home, here in southwestern Pa., Between Pittsburgh & Wheeling, WV. But they want a fortune for a tranny
@ragtie6177 well I'm sure you're more than capable. Like I said the best thing you can do is get on marketplace and find a mower that has a blown engine, or no deck, or someone is parting out and pull the Trans out of it and put it in yours. That's what I do. You could also try ebay
Bought a sltx 1054 for $50 bad hydro rebuilt it new center section and sanded the pumps smooth runs like a champ with 637 hours 👍 Great video
That's definitely a win Myles

Nice swap, so much better than having to rebuild. Can’t keep them all - but you can try.
That's true. Thanks buddy
Good job on that swap. Springs always make me use all my four letter words!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks buddy. Yes those springs can really be a challenge
Hey Dave, I'll watch this later. Looks interesting
LOL. No problem John
Hi Dave! You are a great mechanic, nice work you did!! And nice video too!! 😀 Have a nice weekend my friend!Cheers, Alberto
Thank you very much Alberto. You have a great weekend too my friend
Great video Dave. This could help a lot people wanting to do this. You did a great job!! Nice job getting 950 out of it.
Thanks Bob. Hopefully it will help someone out there
Do what you got to do, nice swap job when you can swap and not rebuild its great
Thanks Jason. Yes I prefer swapping

Inch or so from the top. Do not put anything in the plastic tank

Now the question of the day Will you rebuild the Hydro transmission you took out
The answer is no. I may get a seal for the one that was going to go in but the one I took out is just a parts piece now. Thanks Robert
