To be fair here Ms. Charles here is on Vanessa's side. She is saying Vanessa was beyond the apology and that it was done for ratings rather than being sincere about Vanessa's treatment.

The apology wasn't for ratings its to show that they were truly wrong and her mother felt they handled the situation wrong. I don't care either. As a huge fan of Vanessa, I was ecstatic to hear the apology even if Vanessa lived a humble life for 32 years after being forcefully resigned.
She signed a contract as Miss New York saying that she had born a woman, never had an abortion, been married or lived with a man, nor partaken in pornographic photos. She went into the pageant as a liar, knowing she was liar, and adversely affecting the competition for the next 51 contestants vying for the title. Whenever someone selfishly and uncaringly puts themselves forward for personal gain while uncaringly robbing others... That lack of character does not bespeak of a true Miss America.

horseygurl143 what wrong? VW made a poor choice as a young woman but the truth is that that was not a good representation for the pageant. Wasn't much they could do. There is no denying she deserved to win but it was out of their hands. The ideals of the MA pageant were not upheld with this decision. VM made a mistake and she paid dearly for it but on the other hand she was about to persevere which is a testimony to her drive and determination. One bad decision does not make for all of who a person is.

I never liked how back then, Suzette took a "swipe" aka 'threw shade' at Vanessa by stating that "the only nude pictures I ever took was as a baby lying on a bearskin rug" or something to that effect... maybe that's why not many people heard much about you ever again after the pageant. Vanessa Williams did her thing for decades after having to give up that 'crown'~television, movies, singer, all around entertainer, etc.

However, she should have apologized for committing perjury on her morality clause that she signed when entering the MAP. So there.
Because they have to be offended over something. Suzette could have said that she baked cookies and took them over to the Williams' home after the scandal broke, and they would have called her names. People need to be offended on behalf of another person because it justifies their anger and hate. They wouldn't know anyone involved if they passed them on the street, but they think that if one person is "violated" and "wronged", then they, too, have been victimized. In a nutshell, everyone wants to be a victim. Obviously they never read Vanessa's book.

Suzette is right, IMO. The pageant officials knew that having Vanessa back to host would make the ratings skyrocket, as she is one of the few Miss America titleholders that is still relevant and still a household name. The apology was all for show, but they needed to do it because it would've looked terrible to invite her back and NOT do it. 30+ years later is very late, but better late than never. Thank God that the old guard who was around in 1983 is either elderly or dead: they put Vanessa and her family through a lot of needless pain and emotional abuse.
Aside from an unreleased CD from a short-lived singing career in the early 90's, Suzette faded into the history books and only wore the crown for 7 weeks. The scandal was the best thing that ever happened to Vanessa's career in the long run. Aside from interviews like this, nobody cares or is checking for Suzette.

In that sense, yes. But if you really think about, Inside Edition is stirring the pot here overall. It's really insensitive and SHADY of them to be interviewing Suzette at all, given the circumstances of 1984. Although I agree with Suzette, any attempt to comment on this makes her look spiteful and vindictive. She should stay in the background and remain a gracious beauty queen, as she only wore the crown for less than a month in 1984.

Dam, Miss Suzette Charles looks GREAT!! I was always a fan of both of them (ironic that the runner-up to Vanessa was also African American, Suzette is half black and half Italian). Where is the moral clause for a first lady posing nude? We will speak of the moral clause because Vanessa Williams is a woman of color. However, our first lady gets a pass because it was ok she posed nude (with women too) because she is white.
I think Suzette Charles is right. When has any show passed on a chance to boost ratings? When has any aging celebrity passed on a chance to maintain relevance. That is what this "apology" was really all about. They didn't return the crown so one has to wonder what exactly is the pageant apologizing for. Let's be real. Those pageant Execs can be something else. In the end they both were Miss America. One just used the situation to her advantage. It was Vanessa Williams destiny to be where she was at that time in her life. Just think if this had not happened to (the scandal) where would be today. Vanessa's life may not have been what is today. I did take note to the fact that Suzette has some resentment issues, but they definitely should not have been with Vanessa. For instance, I noticed that the comments that people made about the two ladies talent. One sounded too ethnic, the other suitably for white people. After all, the judging panel was all white that year to make it legitimate. Vanessa has green eyes and fair complexion and Suzette appeared more ethnic due to make up/lighting. Was it a tough decision to choose who was best or Who were they most comfortable with? At some point, when will we be good enough and stop the endoctrination of self hate. This is the way the game is played. Until we learn to coexist together, these type of posting is what we will see. I think Suzette is just telling the truth, and it is definitely about the ratings. I also want to high light the fact that the treatment Vanessa received when she relinquished her crown was zero sympathy or compassion. The very organization that glorified her, left her out in the cold when she hit rock bottom. To get an idea of what I am talking about, grab a copy of her book "You have no idea". The very organization that turned their this lady and her family had to come back to not only apologize but more than likely had to pay her big bucks to do so. (No proof that they paid her) I am happy for her and I'd say her life has come full circle. Vanessa is a very blessed and fortunate woman.
Suzette only took over the last 7 weeks or so. and she had some amount of work but her career never really took off.. she has been bitter for a very long time towards Ms. Williams.
I think the pageant was too shell-shocked to help her through it. Al Marks was old, there had been no contingency plan in place for something like this to happen, they had the next batch of contestants showing up in a few weeks. It's good to keep in mind that Vanessa willingly and knowingly -- not to mention criminally -- signed a contract saying, among other things, that she'd been born female, had never had an abortion, and never posed nude in photos. She can whine all she wants. She more than had her own part to play in it and robbed the next contestants their right to a regular and fair chance at The Crown. The Pageant was bedlam and a political minefield that year.
Ms Charles is has African American ancestry. I can see why she said it was for ratings. I believe Vanessa deserved an apology. She suffered and she persevered and conquered. She is amazing and showed that she has talent and strength. I watched Miss America when she won. My Grandma and I got in an argument because she thought a white person should have won.

Ok...here's my take: I went back and watched the talent portion of the 1984 pageant. VOCALLY: Suzette blew the living daylights out of everyone there including Vanessa....That said: Vanessa won because she had a stronger combination of beauty/poise/charisma that Suzette lacked and so Vanessa should have and did win by a few points...That said: Suzette currently Suzette is just as beautiful as Vanessa is right now. BUT Suzette is wrong for stating that it was "all about ratings" and that she "didn't understand why Vanessa needed that apology" It was all about closure and the restoration of dignity to both her and her family and Suzette missed out on that. I think that after 30+ years the fact that Suzette was runner up and Miss America 1984B still stings her to this day. But to be fair, Suzette was an accomplished singer as well but she should've supported her fellow competitor more

An apology is not enough. She should get back her crown, some way or another. Those photos were meant to be for personal use. There was no agreement that the photos may be released to the public. Penthouse should be made to pay for the damages.

The title is misleading b/c Suzette wasn't the "1984 Miss America WINNER". Erroneous! She was the first runner-up who took over the last 6-7 weeks before Vanessa's year of service ended. VANESSA WILLIAMS is the 1984 WINNER. Getting it by default is not being the "Winner".

I think Vanessa deserved but goven that it was given the guy in charge of the pagent now and not anyone associated with it then, I dont think apology was needed from him. But very nice of him. I saw it like me apology to friend because of something my company did before I ever even joined. It-ll be legit from me, but not have conviction needed for true apology.

Apologizing to Vanessa William was weak! Vanessa Williams not only posed nude but she lied about signing a release for those pictures. I am glad hat she did go on to a successful career so an apology was not necessary.
They sign something beforehand that say they've never did certain things such as posing nude...whatever the case she won and she has been a great star....no apology was necessary.

I'm glad they Apologized to Vanessa Williams. It was a Good Move. For the past 3 decades she was remembered and referred to as Miss America. Suzette (crowned for only 6wks) was forgotten and is unknown by many. So I get her non-support of the Apology, because that brings National and Worldwide attention (again) that Vanessa Williams was Miss America.
