This is one of the greatest love songs ever made. Vanessa Williams is truly a star in every sense of the word. A truly poetic and touching song!
In the same category falls "Promise me" by Beverly Craven. A huge hit at a time though musically it was no longer into 80-ties. Arranged and usually performed in the style of "vocal nocturne" brings the emotional story of incoming separation starting with growing fear and anxiety but ending in acceptable consolation.

This song is one of my favorites. It is definitely not underrated by me. Watching this video clip in Jan 2024 brings back my fond memory.
I think she's one of those artists that either couldn't be controlled by the industry or had to compete against the sales of Toni, Mariah, Celine, and Whitney.
She is still extremely underrated and you almost never see her name come up when talked about great RnB/pop singers. She has a distinct voice, a soothing tone, and has power in her singing.

The black and white footage with that lovely makeup, the highlighting of her eyes, and the seemingly effortless class she gives off by not having too many accessories with her sideswept hair.. Even when it was new (I wasn't quite a kid anymore, but my parents are long gone now, too), it made me sad. Now in my late 30's and after having gone through some breakups and reminiscing on the good times in younger days, it hits harder but in an oddly comforting way. I was a sophomore in high school when this song came out and had a crush on a guy who was a junior, I used to listen to this song hoping it would turn out the same. I had first seen him in junior high, the crush lasted 4 years and he never even knew I existed. During that time I wasn't interested in anyone else and I didn't even date anyone. After high school, I eventually dated other people but I never felt the same about anyone. I was infatuated with an ideal but I never even knew what he was like, I just saw him from afar and turned him into the perfect guy.
