I don't own anything. All right goes to the Paramount+ Star Trek
I can't believe how quickly I've accepted Paul Wesley as Kirk. He's absolutely an echo of the character I grew up with in the 1970s: Competent, driven, but ultimately kind and just.
It's awesome.
This scene in particular is lovely. Fantastic performances by both, but, as always, Christina Chong steals the show. Talk about a talen!
Forgotten how much i liked the character
I truuly love him as Kirk, i know people will always hate anyone that isn't Shatner but i'm waaay more into Paul Wesley than Chris Pine
The interactions between these two characters are by far the best this show has to offer. Flat out super chemistry. One could almost say magical.
yep, I hope they are not over yet. Kirk and carol's relationship is on and off, so there is a chance Kirk and Laan be together.
He'd have more chemistry with Chapel tho. La'an is too weird and emo. She has the emotional maturity of a child, so it seems off for Jim to be involved with her.
@@sungleong but a baby is on the way!!! ugh i hate this
The casting on the show has not only been amazing but has the potential for so much more. We're lucky to see a lineup of such talented, passionate actors coming together on a Star Trek project. I hope they make a dozen seasons.
LOL the bar is quite low after Discovery 😄😄 The casts during the 90s Trek shows were phenomenal, some worthy of Emmys. @@beastinthesky6774
he's not breaking her heart. she knew there was the likelyhood that nothing would come of it. that this James wasn't the same as the one she knew. props for him for being honest with her and not leading her on
Well and spoiler alert for some but let’s just say the family life with Kirk and Carol and the baby doesn’t exactly work out. I’m sure they’ll be revisiting these two.
@@ZJBorg I can already tell you the relationship doesn't work out LOL. I'm old enough to have seen Wrath of Khan at the movies when it came out. Carol has the kid....a boy....and she and Kirk split for good. It was implied in the movie that she knew Jim was a dedicated Starfleet man who would always be gone from her kid's life so she asked him to be TOTALY out of it. Kirk agrees and never sees his son untll about twenty or so years later in the movie.
@@uncletaylorify yeah i knew that as stated in the post. The two I’m referring to them revisiting are Kirk and La’an
@@uncletaylorify "You had your world and I had mine. And I wanted him in *mine* . Not chasing through the galaxy after his father."
Not leading her on? Bruh was flirting his ass off with her all season lol. Are you blind??
0:42 I don’t love rules but I’m pretty sure you’re about to break a big one.
Says the man with the largest file on record at the Department of Temporal Investigations.
He is a bit of a subject expert on this topic, yes.
@@MoeLaneIIIHe's not only expert on time travel violations but also on "bending" the prime directive!
I thought that that was Janeway...
I love how great a job he does conveying Kirk’s emotional intelligence, a key trait in the original show, and updating it for modern sensibilities.
Exactly! This is Kirk, the one who is mature and recognizes the need for careful words and gentle delivery.
Maybe, in some way, it hurt him to stop the possible relationship between them, too. Yes, he confirms that there's something tying them to each other, but in a way, you can also see it hurts Kirk to have to explain to La'an that he was already taken and had made choices that he had to see through. Kirk's my favorite character, and to see that the writers allowed him to be emotionally vulnerable and emotionally aware like this is beautiful
Emotional intelligence. Absolutely right. Very emotionally healthy. Flawed of course. A gambler, possibly even reckless. Courageous. Decisive. All-in, to use the poker term. But has humanity neede his kind? Absolutely. And his kind, male and female, are the heroes.
@@josephwest6413 you said it! Thank you!
Every appearance, Wesley's Kirk is coming more into its own. I feel this specific scene is where he finds some really solid footing by exploring what Kirk is like when he must deliver some heavy truth to another person. From here on out I could imagine this Kirk taking a lead role of his own.
I love the facial acting of both of them, they both do expressions so perfectly
They definitely have chemistry
Now they NEEDED that conversation for La'an's sake. He didn't break her heart, he just gently reminded her that the James T. Kirk she knew and him were NOT the same person. Different times, different places, different people. Plus, the other Kirk likely never met Carol Marcus, if she even existed in his timeline. Talk about awkward, though... Kirk's significant other is pregnant...
So sad, you can see the connection between these two, great chemistry. In a different world they'd be perfect for one another.
Sadly, of course, we know that Kirk and Carol's relationship goes spectacularly south at some point. She takes their son and just leaves and Kirk doesn't meet or see his son again until he's a young adult. Then, as we all know, not long after father and son reconcile and make the effort to try and be family? David dies trying to be more like his dad, saving Saavik's life in the process...
once david is born in 2261 carol ghosts james and never contacts him again.
@@cosmeticscameo8277 Fingers crossed something happens with them after this.
They were literally perfect for one another in a different world lmao.
Those Klingon bastards!
@@OneGaurdian yeah maybe she will travel back, there is the time travel department that controls time events. the chances are open, and then beside that it's fiction, in tv land everything is possible.
In Deep Space Nine, they mentioned that nobody has had more temporal incursions than James T. Kirk and at 0:41, the way Kirk already knew what La'an was talking about and knew that she probably shouldn't be talking about it, leads me to believe that Kirk has already had experiences travelling through time and even had run-ins in with the Department of Temporal Investigations by this time already.
Is the Department of Temporal Investigations the same faction Daniels belongs to in ENT during the temporal cold war? If so, that'd be awesome
I like how Kirk just totally buys into the whole time travel story, as though it's a normal, everyday experience.
In the DS9 Tribble episode, we do learn that Kirk has the highest number of “temporal incidents” on record
@@Dudepatrol47 This is true.
Because it will be
Because it is.
@@Dudepatrol47 Janeway has that record. Thanks to the Borg..As they spend a lot of time cleaning up her incursions. They actually made a whole episode devoted to taking her out. He was tired of it..
One of the best episodes ever. Chong kills in her scenes with him. And Wesley is right there too, understated even.
Her face is amazing.
Decades ago the critics used to say Gary Cooper looked like nothing on set, hardly even acting. But in the rushes, my gawd, such perfect facial expression. She has some of that, as does Wesley.
This was beautiful scene and Kirk showing that honesty to La'an was perfect. The first mention to Carol Marcus was great. I think they will payoff by introducing her in Season 3.
possibly i wonder what the snw version of janice rand will be like if they decide to bring her into the show which i doubt but still
I suspect that will be a next season plot point Kirk and Carol will be on the enterprise and we see why she didn’t want kirk in David’s life.
@@Phantom19913what sucks, is that he knew he had son out there. And couldn't talk to him. Because granted Carol's wish. And the only time they started talking was after 20 years, right around the time his son died
Christina Chong really, really hit it out of the park with her singing, her emotional range, her subtle facial expressions. She gave La'an such incredible depth, carrying the weight of her "Khan" name, feeling as if she is known, BEFORE anyone bothers to actually get to know her, feeling closed off from others by virtue of her "legacy". Chong's performance was deeply touching, nuanced and heart-breaking.
While I felt Paul Wesley was somewhat out of his depth next to Chong's deeply cathartic moment, his candor and personal admissions gave this iteration of Jim Kirk more dimension. He's not a one-dimensional galactic Casanova, but a man trying to manage companionship while following his strong allegiance to duty and office!
I believe Carol was on the Enterprise in S1. Whether she returns will be up to TPTB and the actress playing Carol.
"Aft torpedoes are what you really have to worry about." Funny, "aft torpedoes" are what Khan used to fight Kirk in the nebula in the Wrath of Khan.
I love it when these two characters are on the screen together. I wanted this romance to happen. I'm just bummed it didn't work out.
But it couldn’t have worked out, because we don’t see her in TOS.
@@gawainethefirst I dunno. Still have 6 or 7 years. Maybe it doesn't work out in the long run but who knows what will happen in the next few seasons.
Christine Chong and Paul Wesley work so well together. Both very good actors and they have been given great material to work with. And they are more than up to the job. Episode 3 was fantastic. This scene is so well written and well acted. You ache for both of them, but you end up respecting both of them immensely. Kudos to the writers and the actors.
I like that they re-use the “love theme” that was originally used for them in the time travel episode. It pops up in all their scenes together
She is a fantastic actress. She's got chops!
Watch this Lis, you can actually pinpoint the moment when her heart rips in half.
The whole gimmick of this episode is that people sing when they're experiencing powerful emotions, but this scene is more powerfully emotional than virtually all the songs. . . . 🤔
I think though Christina Chong manages to convey the stilted speech that comes with trying to get something very hard to say out and forcing it through. It's kinda got that vibe of the 'handbrake still being on' which I can buy quelling any song starting.
Chapel dumps Spock after T’Pring ends their engagement. La’an discovers that Kirk is taken. And judging by the preview for episode 10, it looks like Pike’s girlfriend is going to be killed. Lot of heartbreak in one season.
Chapel lost interest once she got him.
@@mk17173n Things were going good, until Boimler opened his big mouth about Spock's future, and spoiled things for Chapel.
@@OneGaurdian she told him what he said. Even in the last episode she was being rude to him when he tried to help her with PTSD.
@@mk17173n Obviously they weren't going to last(why couldn't this show be set in an alternate timeline), but as soon as they get together the writers start tossing darts at the balloon that is their relationship. They couldn't be given even a single episode of romantic bliss.
They can bend the canon only so much, as much as I love these relationships, I always knew they weren’t going to have happy endings.
I'm going to miss La'an being "Tsundere". I hope the SNW will still continue this. It's fun to watch her in this kind of behavior when James Kirk is around
Same old Kirk always breaking girls hearts. Dammit Jim! 😂
“I actually think you’d like Carol…” Anyone else burst out laughing when he said that?
Seriously, I’m pretty sure that’s the least best way to let someone down who’s crushing on you. Like they could be friends or something.
This would be a very difficult thing to process, and the acting does a great job
Should be titled "La'an confesses to Jim Kirk, it's complicated"
The amount of vulnerability and sincerity on her face and in her eyes in this scene.
Nice nod to TOS! And - no, no heart breaking. Just careful honesty.
The chemistry between these two is dynamic and very lovely. Although Kirk here talks about being with Carol. If this is following canon then that relationship cannot be far from breaking up with Kirk following Carols wishes to have nothing more to do with her or their son. As much as would love to see these two (Kirk and La'An) together.... I am not sure it would work even if in season 3 Kirk breaks up with Carol ( Although there is another caveat, which I wont say here in case people have not watched the final episode of season 2) . The trouble is La'An is in love with the other Kirk. Therefore in her heart she will only ever truly love the other Kirk and not this one. I think if they did get together then it would potentially only end in heartbreak for La'An and Kirk...... Of all the character's in this show, she has been and is my most favorite one.
This dialog was the best part of the musical episode. Great script and great acting.
And here is the exact moment when her heart rips in half
well i mean kirk and la'an could still have a fling. at this point kirks relationship with carol is all but done. she ghosts him and takes the kid with her.
@@joeswanson733 He doesn't KNOW that yet, though.
3:31 OMG, Carol Marcus! I wonder if we’ll see her eventually on Strange New Worlds.
Would be cool to see another young her and maybe even a young David.
@@jessejeffries7883 absolutely! Young Carol and baby David! ☺️
Somehow someway...I still want this to happen
Who would have thought one of the running themes of the second season would be where Kirk and La'an stand as two individuals ?
Good character development for both of them, with some civil and mature performances. I like that they even incorporated some continuity into it, nodding at Kirk's relationship with Carol (and the future son he doesn't know about yet and won't know for many years). I don't think La'an ever considered seriously pursuing a closer relationship with him, but keeping the experiences from her earlier time travel adventure bottled up wouldn't have helped either. Honesty was necessary here, by both of them. That's what mature people should do: Know how to communicate with each other with respect.
In the alternate timeline episode from the first season (with another alternate Kirk, cooperating with Pike in the alternate timeline), ther was mention that La'an was serving on the alternate Kirk's USS Farragut. You have to wonder if something didn't develop between the two in that particular alternate future, even if they kept it secret due to regulations... The primary timeline Kirk was never likely to have a closer relationship with La'an, other than friendship.
Great example of
"Sometimes the truth is Painful" 😢😢😢
🖖
She has a unique, and non-typical attractiveness/appearance and quality of confidence about her.
La'an and Kirk chemistry: exist
Carol Marcus: *bonjour*
So in SNW’s everyone gets their Heart Broken…harsh💔
She’s the emotional center of the entire episode. The time travel episode earlier in the season was a bit weak tbh but the payoff in this episode for her character here is just stupendous and makes that episode worth it. Absolute MVP of the episode and perhaps the season.
When they first linked these 2 in some sort of romance, I thought it was extremely random and cringe. I didn't like it at all. However every subsequent episode they have been in together has been incredible. Their energy, connection and storyline works perfectly.
I love her accent. Beautiful. Really fits her :)
We know the relationship with Carol is going nowhere in the long run. After all Their son doesn't even know who Kirk is. Unfortunately the relationship with La'An is also doomed. Which is too bad because they do go well together.
Exactly
@@ude84 IF they reboot TOS with a new cast things with La'An might not be doomed. I would like to see that as Paul Wesley is doing a good job as Kirk and it would be an opportunity for the other actors to continue their roles. Not to mention that Kirk in a long term relationship might go better in modern times than Capt. Zoom Pants.
@@richardcutts196 they've already rebooted the original series. That's why the timelines are different it's separate from the films. Paul Wesley is doing a bang up job as Kirk I can't complain I'm just going by canon but we can all speculate
@@ude84 I believe they've said that the plan is to (as much as possible) stick to canon. They seem to have done so, so far (with the exception of casting a more diverse cast which I welcome). Of course if they do a reboot of TOS with Paul Wesley as Kirk and the other actors introduced in SNW that would change canon. There are some story plots in SNW that help fill in missing parts of TOS. For instance the story between Spock and Christine gives needed context to Christine bringing plomeek soup to Spock in Amok Time when there had not been any indication of a previous relationship. Also the scenes between Spock and T'Pring lend credence to something shown in Enterprise to the effect that Vulcans can have sex when the want to not just every seven years. As I understand it Vulcan females ovulate every seven years and Vulcan males NEED to have sex at least once every seven years.
Wait !!!! I love L'an, phenomenal vibes that she gives off. And Ortegas ... oh heck, they're all great
If they do kill off most of the characters like Laan, Una, Pelia, Erica and so on...I hope they give them heroic deaths like they did Hemmer.
The people who wrote this show really understood TOS, it's not jut Rodenberry's optimism, it's not just about struggling like it is in Discovery, it's not just about making peace with the past like it is with Picard, its not just about love triumphing over hate like it is in all of the movies. It's about something far more universal than all that combined: people being wise and brave enough to explore the unknown and rescue their fellows on their journeys with the timeless "because its there" and "because you are my friend" instincts.
And a few minutes later they are smiling together and dancing 🤨🤨😄😄
Damn Kirk. Such a heartbreaker
Just like the original Kirk
She is so beautiful.
something about her face reminds me of Jennifer Garner. anyone else see it?
There was a flash scene of Kirk and La'an in an intimate scene, on a bed I think. I am sure I saw this flash by on screen.
Was it her imagination? Another time line again? It was very, very quick. Of course they must grow closer, with both fully aware, no matter what time line it is in.
Dramatically, what is better, the anticipation or the happening? Both good, but after the happening, the sizzle and the powerful emotions change.
Great writing and acting.
Imo Wesley as Kirk pretty much deserves a spinoff, as a prequel to TOS.
OK, I missed her singing re Kirk in another episode.
Could have been a dream or like wishful thinking or it really happened back then with the other James
> Imo Wesley as Kirk pretty much deserves a spinoff, as a prequel to TOS.
omg! haha
its in the scene when La'an is singing in her quarters.
Kirk got lucky this time. Breaking the heart of a Noonien Singh never goes well.
how did kirk break la'an's heart... he was honest with her and she knew this isn't the same james kirk as that other james kirk... O_o
He is breaking her heart
@Jwa-fo6nb ...Lisa!
He’s a different Jim Kirk. But, for La’an it doesn’t hurt any less. They are just two ships passing. He’ll move on to his destiny and she’ll move on to hers. But, can’t help but wonder…
You can break someone's heart as kindly as possible and it can be completely necessary if you're already in a relationship, but it's still heartbreak
@@DETHREAPER11 exactly
this part is breakin my heart...
You know it's kinda funny he never mentioned knowing khan's distant relative 😅
I wonder how the show will clarify how Kirk came to not be in his son’s life. It’s one thing to be a Disneyland dad who comes for birthdays and holidays. But to literally never be a part of your son’s life for 20 years (they HAVE video calls!) and not even know what he looked like. That’s something else entirely. Especially when there was no indication that he didn’t want to be part of David’s life.
Carol told him to stay out of David's life, which Kirk respected. Said so in Wrath of Khan
I imagine Carol wanting Jim to take an assignment closer to home, perhaps, transferring away from Starfleet's exploratory arm to its civilian support arm (more like the U.S.S. Grissom from Star Trek III). I imagine Jim being offered the Enterprise and a five year mission instead, which is everything he's ever wanted, and choosing that instead. I imagine Carol saying something along the lines of, "I don't want David to have a father who's gone for years at a time. If you're going to do this, then promise you'll stay out of his life forever. Don't take him away from me and drag him galavanting around the galaxy facing certain death at every turn."
too bad they don't have Facebook in the future - La'an could have just looked to see that Kirk was In A Relationship and saved herself from an awkward situation.

Nice call back to the wrath of Khan and search for spook
“Carol is pregnant”
New fans: wow that’s nice
Old fans: 😔
Who wants to place bets that La'an will still follow James to the Farragut once he becomes its Captain, as was shown in last season's "A Quality of Mercy"? I'm almost certain that's where she learns to become a hugger. 😉🙂👍lol
He won't become captain of the Farragut - he will become captain of the Enterprise
@@seth8629 In TOS, Kirk was the Farragut captain before he was the Enterprise captain. So it's entirely possible that this Kirk could/would be, too.
I think even traditional tos kirk would have done this at this young age of himself. He did have his moments of clarity
It occurs to me... La'an didn't know the "don't discuss time travel" rule until after she time travelled, and yet Kirk seems well aware of it. So does that mean he's already had some kind of... [remembers who this is] Never mind.
I love that they put this in. Finally we know when exactly Jim and Carol made David.
Is this the son that is referenced in wrath of Kan ?
Just kiss already (in season 3 make it happen fellas)
well khaaaaan
Oh very good.
Damn, Christina Chong did an amazing job here.
IMO Kirk was telling her listen....I have a baby mama but if you wanna mess around whenever we're in transporter range, I'm in....
He could have been a lot more considerate than that me thinks…..🤔
I think that was incredibly considerate of Kirk, given his... history. No leading on, when he saw she was still conflicted with feelings, he deconflicted them in a very straightforward, honest way.
I hope both Carol and baby David would make guess appearance next season.
Highly doubtful, as it was mentioned or implied Carol never told David Jim was his father until the wrath of Khan
@@wookieeMan06 I mean, babies don't remember much until they turn three or four years old.
i@@themocaw carol even stated he never saw him until wrath
Carol Marcus being knocked up is an excuse for not contributing to the Noonien Singh gene pool. Otherwise the kid would be named David Kirk.
Jim you are torturing that poor girl
Kirk will always be a player in every timeline
He’s not though. What he is-except for Chris Pine’s Kirk (whose a dog)-is a hopeless romantic.
Christine nails it.
This "Kirk" has way too much Jim Carrey in him.
The funny thing is aft torpedoes weren't even a thing in TOS. As far as I can recsll they were never used by the Klingons or the Federation in TOS.
❤❤❤ Paul Wesley
A time remnant dubble, is more a brother than a version them she purity much feel in love with his twin brother but wow this kirk new he had a son hmm I'm sure he didn't know ill have to rewatch the film again lol
He knew Carol was pregnant and he knew David was his son, but Carol told him to stay away, so he did - which is why David didn't know Kirk was his father.
I wonder if Carol's father is a egomaniacal whackadoodle in this timeline.
I hope she gets back with him.
Carol Marcus!
i approve
Carol Marcus. At least in this reality he knows about the child.
He knew about David, he just hadn't seen the kid in 20 years.
I hope he bulks up a little before he becomes captain. He looks tiny next to Pike and just seems to lack command presence.
hopefully not
If this is the best the show has to offer. It looks like the making of a soap opera. Days of are life's rehashed aboard a star ship. Ohhh the weaves we web.
Unlike Nurse Chaple ... Kirk does it kindly and shows he is loyal to the one he's with. So despite the conditions the crew was in you can be in control of yourself and not be a total jerk. At any rate ... I find it odd that they don't have birth control in the 23rd century?
The Kirk sperm is that powerful.
This scene is funny, too, with Kirk/Wesley's gentle smiles and questions. He draws her out, very therapeutic.
''Am I anything like him?'' Ha ha.
''Am I special?'' In the kissing scene.
Shatner was amazing, but Wesley, with a glance, a look, conveys such support, as one human to another.
Carol and kIRK may be in crisis and are together because she is pregnant. he would not act around women that way if their relationship is strong.
Shame about what happened with him and her.
I thought Kirk was surprised when he found out he had a son in Wrath of Khan?
Nah he said he stayed away like Carol asked so he knew, he just didn't expect to meet him like that or that the grown man in front of him was his son
@@DETHREAPER11 yeah, I realized that after I posted...
I thought..... That Carol didn't tell Kirk about David......
Nah that's a common misconception. Kirk says to Carol in The Wrath of Khan "I did what you wanted. I stayed away. Why didn't you tell him?"
Is it me but something about Christina Chong remind me of Florence Pugh. How they speak, facial expression, they are same height and for me similer body type.
