    I love how the effect on the colony being beamed out is different from the effect of the crew beamed directly to sickbay, with the colony's effect having more wavy lines and the sickbay having straighter lines. I remember watching the episode and thinking, "Huh, the visual effect for transporting the colony looked different, maybe it's a different kind of transporter for a group that large?" Really great attention to detail.

    One of those parts that I really like about the end is that it shows that Pike is not a combat oriented captain. He's an explorer, a diplomat, who is being forced into a position where he has to think like a military captain. This is why he froze at the end. This will probably wind up being a really good plot thread in Season 3 as he has to recon with the fact of making military decisions.
    My bet is that Una tells him that they need to retreat. It is the correct move. They have too much intel that is vital for the war effort. They will probably retreat and then utilize Scotty's device as a way to go rescue the crew early in Season 3. We know that M'Benga, Kirk, and Ortegas* survive (We see M'Benga and Kirk in TOS and Boimler says Ortegas is a war hero (*Though this may be a misdirect as she might be considered a war hero for her time in the Klingon Wars)), I don't think that La'an makes it, and might wind up sacrificing herself in order to save the other bridge crew.
    I'm really excited that Scotty is on the crew now though. I think they perfectly distilled Doohan and Pegg. They have the Physicality of Doohan and the personality of Pegg. It's funny for me. Hemmer is your Model Engineer. He's focused, gets the job done, and is just a professional. I always like Scotty as a scrappy, unconventional sort of Engineer. Professional in that he cares about his job, but he is willing to take risks and get creative in order to keep the ship running and in the fight (With a good bit of sarcasm). Overlooked by many, but when shit gets tough, you want him in Engineering.
    Also, a giant bowl of Fuck You to the studio executives for not paying their damn writers and actors. It's the studios damn fault, with their greedy asses, that they forced the Unions to strike. Now we have to wait 2-3 years for Season 3

      @@cosmeticscameo8277 You're right it is about the money and workers aren't getting their fair share, because the C-Suite are greedy assholes. The workers (Writers and all the below the line workers, and actors (who most are paid very little for their roles) actually make the TV shows and movies, not the studio heads.
      The writers are asking for $343 million extra in pay. Across 350 production companies. Disney would pay an extra $75 million and Netflix would pay $68 million. Disney made $82.7 BILLION in revenue in 2022, so the increase would come out to be about .091% of revenue. Netflix made $31.6 BILLION in revenue in 2022, so the increase would come out to be .214%. And yes, I recognize that is just Revenue, but keep in mind, Disney made $28.3 billion in profit in 2022 and Netflix made $12.4 billion.
      Writers, actors, and all sort of below the line people are starving, having to work multiple jobs, losing their apartments over corporate greed. The residual checks for the majority of actors are pennies.
      I want you to seriously look at those numbers and tell me the studios and their C-Suite aren't evil for causing this much human misery.
      No one should have to work multiple jobs in order to live.

      I don't think the writers will kill off La'an here. That would be a ridiculous waste of talent and opportunity to develop the character through the whole series. I've seen people criticize Pike's hesitation here as bad writing, but if this 'flaw' is indeed developed later as character growth it could indeed be a great move on the writers instead of a bad one. Finally, yes, studio execs and the investors are the major problem here since their aims here reflect the late, failing stage of neo-liberal capitalism. Economic justice cannot be done simply by expecting those execs to 'find a clever, technical solution'. It will require the majority of those affected by the current material issues (the writers and even many of us as consumers) force the execs, elite investors, and the upper class in general to give up some of their wealth and control for the benefit of the rest of us. It is not a question of limited resources period, it is an issue of where the massive amounts of wealth in our society go, how usefully their are put to use instead of sitting in someone's capital portfolio, and whether we wish to fund worthy artistic or entertainment endeavors like SNW as a democratic choice by more people than just the execs, if necessary from the pockets of other parts of economy which we ourselves work in.

    The one thing that's a bit of a head scratcher about their version of Scotty, is that Scotty was known for being older, higher in rank, and quite a bit more seasoned than the rest of the command crew (Uhura, Chekov, and Sulu). He was pretty much on par with Spock, and Bones. Making him appear younger and even less seasoned than Uhura and Chapel doesn't seem to make much sense.

    • @joeswanson733
      @joeswanson733 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      well looks can be deceiving.
      and by now in snw scotty would be around 37.
      so they got a 29 year old playing a 37 year old.. it's doable.
      even by TOS scotty is only a lt commander as he's a department head on the enterprise CEO (chief engineering officer)
      so by this point he would be a lt or minimum lt jr grade. but that would be kind of weird as scotty would've been in the fleet for about 15 years by this point. scotty mentioned he served on 11 ships including the enterprise/A. so 9 ships besides the enterprises.

    • @Condor1970
      @Condor1970 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@joeswanson733 ...yeah, that's my point. Scotty was around Starfleet on various duty stations for quite a while before even getting to the Enterprise, where he really fell in love with the ship, and planted himself there. To become LtCom by TOS, he would have had to have been at least a well seasoned Lt here, get promoted ASAP and gain some more time on the Enterprise before taking over the Engineering dept as dept head.
      Pike was only on the Enterprise for just a few years before the accident. So, his time left will only be another year or two by TOS timeline. When Kirk takes over, Scotty was already a seasoned Lt Commander in charge of the department.
      The one way to do this, is for Pelia to have Scotty promoted to full Lt right now as her right hand man in Engineering, after the Gorn incident. Then, when Pike has the accident in another year or two, Pelia gets killed during the same accident as Pike, leaving Scotty in charge to somehow save the ship. Scotty then gets awarded and promoted to LtCommander for his Heroism and takes over as Engineering Dept Head just before Kirks arrival as new Captain.
      That would be the only way, and the fastest jump in rank ever. That still wouldn't really fit the narrative of Scotty being an old crusty sailor who's been around a long time and really loves his ship.

    4:09 The inspiration for this scene is from DS9 season 4 premier Way of the Warrior when Sisko had to make an executive decision to risk starting a war with the Klingons by engaging them to save the Cardassian leadership. Usually Sisko is very secure, calm and collected but he had to really think for a bit before risking it all. That's an all time classic scene to me, this is more of a watered down version of it. Pike just looks scared and hesitant where Sisko was proven by the time of Way of the Warrior that he has no problem taking big risks so when he is hesitant it's more meaningful.

I don't expect the Metrons to show up, but the parallels so far are pretty interesting. With regards to Pike freezing up at the end, it's natural for him to do so in this situation. He's Starfleet's boy scout, who more than once in Season 2 stands by his crew (his family) and comes to their rescue because it's the right thing to do and consequences be damned. Only here the consequences caught up with him. In that light, "Now what the hell do I do..." is a normal reaction, I think.

      @dschehutinefer5627 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I'm also thinking it's an interesting call-back to his original characterization in The Cage. Pike REALLY struggles to deal with loosing people. In The Cage he was considering retiring from Starfleet because loosing several redshirts in a previous mission weighed on his mind too much. Here he is forced to abandon these people to certain death and it's the only rational decision he can possibly make to save his crew. Pretty much the worst possible situation someone with Pike's personality can be put into.

      Back three-plus decades ago, TNG fans had to wait 9 months before they learned Picard's fate in BOBW Part 2.' Now thanks to the writers strike, we have to wait until 2025-26 before we learn the fate of La'an, Ortega, and Batel, and plus how the conflict with the Gorn changes Pike's outlook 🙄

    I do believe that this is what Star Fleet would call a....Kobayashi Maru.
    Think on it for a moment. The Admiral is ordering them to return to base, they have 100's of people are hostages to the Gorn, the Gorn are attacking them and they don't want to leave behind said hostages, and the ship is in borderline bad shape. Sure the order from command would be to run, but if you leave the hostages to the Gorn, then the hostages are basically going to become Gorn and then you have more to worry about in the future. If you try to risk saving them, you risk the chance to be infected and become a Gorn yourself or be killed in the process, basically it's a suicide mission. Waiting for backup is a bad move too, because there can only be so much done to stall for time for said backup. I do think negotiations would fall short too as I don't think the Gorn are the negotiating type. If you fight, you may end up using what systems you have left till empty and then risk the ship being captured and/or destroyed.
    I know that there will be a way out in the following season, but this looks like a no-win scenario at face value.

      Trek canon has always been a fickle thing, not just with the new shows. And SNW at least gave us a pretty decent explanation for why these inconsistencies have occured and keep occurring.
      Fighting the Gorn doesn't mean understanding them, and imo that's Kirk's true accomplishment. And a lot of the dialogue in the episode makes me thing the writers have the same opinion and are setting up the Gorn as evil monsters, not to overshadow Kirk, but to elevate what he achieved!

    • @TheZamaron
      @TheZamaron 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Temorary alliance. Remember L'rell's peace will need to eventually break down by the time of TOS. Hopefully we'll also start seeing Klingon Augments like Kor soon. Easy way they can do this is by having the Klingons look down on them as abominations, and hav their "normal" numbers reduced due to the Kingon War, and so they put the Augments on the frontlines, seeing death as the only way to reclaim their honor for their disfgurment. WOuld be a good explanation why we only see Human like Klingons, but eventually they find a cure and the Augment Virus is no longer an issue by the time of the TOS movies, most Augments even got surgry or a cure that restored their forehead ridges, as we see Kor and the old TOS Klingons have them in TNG and DS9. THey could even say the virus effected normal Klingons mutating them into the abominations we see in DIscovery, they do bear a bit of resembelence to the Neanderthaal Klingon we saw Q turn Worf into in TNG. Maybe that DNA partially resurfaced by the time of Discovery. But whitht he end of the war it was cured, or at least the Klingon's fifured some way to rstore themselves to normal, but not yet the Augments.
