    Thanks for giving so much respect to the guitar skills of Prince. As a fan from the early days, it was always disappointing and downright upsetting that he didn't receive his due recognition, especially on the guitar. Your attention and analysis of his work goes a long way in making his oldest and earliest fans beam with pride at how amazing Prince was! Especially when you consider how young he was when he accomplished much of his catalog. You have an amazing ear! Thank you.

    What blew me away as a kid (and still does) is, to be prince… after you break down all the fascinating guitar insanity. You then do the same with the rest of the instruments. Its not like he “phoned it in”, he played them like they were his main instrument. Once you get that done, you play them, all the way through, perfectly!!! You don’t “record, drag, drop, repeat”. This is the time of tape. You need to preform the song, to record the song. Prince was amazing, for a long time. Thank you for sharing this and all the videos you make Danny, there is a ton of work you put in to them. That work is appreciated, and i hope you know that. Sorry for leaving such long comments. Cheers

      @@dannyeddyguitar indeed. I was souped to see him in 85. My parents gave me a card saying “we are getting you prince tickets” for my 15th birthday, when the tickets went on sale, they were sold out in minutes. That was back when you had to go to a ticket “box office”. When they saw what the tickets were going for by “scalpers”… they said, “sorry no prince ticket, maybe next time. Unfortunately I never ended up seeing him live, but thankfully the internet made it easy to see live performances. Things really have changed, anyway…Cheers Danny

    He heard his music in his head and he was fluid in his interpretation of what he heard and his music also came through him making it look so easy that nobody understood how complex his skill was. Nobody can play him with that essence of how his music flowed. Wendy said that sometimes she wondered if he knew what he was doing on the guitar on stage because he was self taught and not trained as she was. To be spiritual, his music came from God through him to us and we haven’t even began to understand the messages and music. He was a messenger and when he said “times were going to get rougher and we will need each other more than ever”, he was also a prophet.

      The main riff is so badass that I wonder how I've never heard anyone mention it. Perhaps it's because Prince's first albums didn't make it to the mainstream and consequently they are relatively obscure to the wider audience even though Prince attained superstar status.

    Best Bambi video on the TH-cam hands on. Plays and explains it perfectly with all the little forgotten details that other videos miss. Sounds just like it. One of the best guitar solos ever. Prince could never duplicate the solo again live though whenever he played it.

    • @cameron6249

Bambi was either a studio one shot or spliced together. Either way he could not get close to the solo on the record.... whether you like it or not. In fact, every live version of Bambi kinda sucks. Unless Prince took the time to transcribe and re-learn what he played.... like Danny.... It wasn't happening and it didn't! Always a fanatic Prince apologist lurking 😂

    Great video. Interesting to hear you talk about your process. The real value of slowing it down is that you never play it incorrectly. My degree was in jazz, and I was taught early on by a really incredible guitarist that if you make a mistake, you're quite likely to make that same mistake again because you've essentially just practiced making it. He taught us to leave the guitar in the bag and read the sheet, visualising exactly how best to play it. It's really amazing how you instantly play it correctly as soon as you pick up the guitar, even at full speed. That's supposedly how concert pianists learn such complex pieces. What I think you've done here is essentially learnt it in your mind through the process of transcribing it to tab as well as notation, therefore figuring out the fingering before you played it. That's my take anyway. Hopefully it's interesting to someone.

    • @dannyeddyguitar
      @dannyeddyguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much Chris. That's a great insight - reading the sheet before attempting - I must try it! And yes, I tell my students the same thing "If you've made the mistake twice - you're practicing a mistake. And it's getting easier and easier to repeat!"
      Thanks again mate.

    • @dannyeddyguitar

      Thanks Frank! Both the rhythm and lead parts are totally created within Logic, based upon the "Seventies Rock" preset. Then, for the lead I gave the EQ a very narrow spike at 1120Hz and dropped out 3880Hz, which I think made it sound really close to Prince's tone. But it's even more important to copy his attack and vibrato etc.

    Here is some info for everyone. All guitar solos on princes albums up until purple rain were performed by Dez Dickerson the lead guitar player of the band this is a fact and is written in the notes on the 1999 album " all guitar solos performed by Dez", at this time prince was just playing the most phenomenal rhythm guitar ever. He really became the lead player from purple rain and later when Dez left the band. princes music however took Dez's playing to another level, and direction.

    Great vid./tutorial. 👍 I am a guitar luthier/tech and all I can focus on is that terrible 60 cycle buzz on that guitar. I notice you keep your hand on the strings to stop it. Needs work to fix that grounding issue! 😉✌️

    • @dannyeddyguitar
      @dannyeddyguitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Help me understand - I always understood that the guitar is grounded through the player's hands? I've never held a guitar with any amount of gain where I've been able to let go of the strings unless the volume is down. After a lifetime of gigs and recording I'm not even aware of keeping my hand in contact at this stage lol.

    • @BreadSlocum
      @BreadSlocum ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannyeddyguitar Hello Danny. Well, the problems could be many. Myself or a tech would need to have the guitar in hand to be sure. But to give you a list, it could be that there is no ground wire to the bridge. The pots may not be grounded, could need shielding in the cavity (what is referred to as a Farrady cage) Many possibilities... these are to name a few. Also, your cable and the type of lights or other electrical devices where you play can cause 60 cycle hum..
      But what I am.hearing sounds more like a grounding issue buzz rather than 60 cycle hum! You can also consider swapping the pickups pit for noiseless ones but that is usually very personal from player to player. To be honest, your buzz sounds like it is most likely one of the lesser type fixes that zi mentioned and any descent tech should br able to address it for you in that or any other guitars with this problem. You should not have to continue playing with that buzz...! Cheers my friend! ✌️👍 🎸

      Hi Mikel. Well, there are a couple of ways to make requests. One is to say "Could you please do a tutorial on [insert song] by Prince. The other way is to say the same thing, but only after throwing something in my tip jar, or becoming a Patron on my Patreon, thus making it harder for me to say no, lol!

    Don't feel bad! I am almost 10 times his age when he wrote that! I could always be seen walking through the neighborhood in my long robe, pointed hat and extremely large wooden walking stick, with a Fender Strat strapped to my back, and I still don't have a fraction of his talent. But, no one walks like me either, or has the fashion sense for walking like I do. Or so I've been told by an Oenophile of Mad Dog 20/20, and no front teeth, who guards our condo's garbage bin,

    • @dannyeddyguitar

      Hi Leon. I have to admit that I'm pretty terrible at figuring out what gear people use. I'm always getting great feedback from people saying "You really nailed that tone" but I think it's more down to trying to PLAY like the person. For me anyway.

    I think he used an octave pedal to get that very high note at the end...

    • @dannyeddyguitar
      @dannyeddyguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe. But to me it sounds like the tone doesn't change like it usually would with an octave unit - especially back in the 70s. And the fact that he only plays one particular note repeatedly suggests that he's being limited or restricted somehow...
      Thanks for watching and commenting though.
