      Damn!.. I think only those who have been to his concerts would know this... I never knew he had these skills on his guitar.. Don't get me wrong and as you've pointed out his other talents are usually forefront in his albums but he never expressed enough with his guitar on them. Now I am getting a chance to see more of his live work, brought in by his part in the tribute to George Harrison "While My Guitar Weeps"....And yes, guitar is my fav instrument in a band, especially the electric..

    Prince literally did not have enough ways through which to express his talent and genius. He wrote all of his music, did all of his own choreography-and that of Revolution, played every instrument on every track, oh, and designed his own clothes and costumes, developed new artist/label contractual paradigms, all while initiating an explosive revolution in music.

    I'm a Minneapolis old head who was lucky enough to follow Prince from is second concert on. My parents wouldn't let me go to North Minneapolis late to see his first show but I tried my best to see everyone after that. Let me tell you that the best of times is when he would just lose himself for an hour just jamming on the guitar or piano! It was amazing and something special to see! What's also great is that he left us with so much that now seven years after he's passed I still see and hear new stuff all the time! They said he has enough in the vault for 100 years....

    I believe people underrate Prince as a guitarist because he was so good at everything. It gets lost in the mix. Songwriting, singing, charisma, stage presence, production chops... He had it all. Same as how people forget Hendrix was also a great songwriter and lyricist, or how great and powerful a singer SRV was.

      Prince's 2nd show at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival is the best video I've seen of the phenomenon you describe. For starters, he brings a tiny band with no other guitarists, so every single guitar note you hear throughout is 100% Prince -- and not just playing great but also having an obvious great time playing. Sound just flows out of him like liquid magic. Both those shows are fantastic, and the first is probably his best recorded performance ever ... except that means he's already warmed up to that level from the very start of the second set, and omfg I don't know words to describe what goes down after that. Then in 2007 he was playing in the O2 and my then manager/friend and I decided to go. We hopped on a plane to London and I had bought 3 tickets. The third person couldn't and so we had a ticket left (which I still have on my wall). We had seats on the first elevate row and space to stand because of the empty seat. And I am not bragging if I say that as a former player I have been to hundreds of festivals and concerts but that was THE BEST EVER! Musically it was so tidy! The sound was ASTONISHING! If you watch the antics and the over the top solo that Prince does at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to George Harrison playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps, you will see him full throttle. The reason why he went over the top was a recent article had been released in Rolling Stone that listed the top 100 guitar players of all time, Prince was not anywhere on the list. That guitar prince is playing is a "Hohner Madcat" not a "Fender Telecaster". Very similar in shape and was his favorite guitar among many. Same one used in the famous HOF solo that he throws in the air in 2004. And the Drummer is playing in "the pocket" which allows Prince to improvise not just here, but later in the song when he does a bass solo as well. All his drummers were pocket drummers who could keep a tempo on cue, with the exception of Hannah maybe. Love her but she played different. Anyway that allowed him more space to improvise without having to constantly practice. His band mates will tell you that you always had to be ready for his cues because he didn't even know what he was going to do, he thinks it and it pours out.

    Even his guitar solos in pre concert sound checks and rehearsals were legendary. He was also an excellent piano player as well. The best demonstration of that was his posthumously released album Piano & A Microphone which is a collection of demos that he recorded in 1983 using a cassette tape recorder.
    For the sake of accuracy Prince’s early Telecasters were not Fenders but knock offs made by a company named Hohner.

    Prince was incredible as a musician and singer. He is a prime example of an 'Ultimate Showman'! Fil, I have faith that people will continue appreciating the music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s for a very long time. Great music in an eclectic range of treasures appreciated and played by younger generations like yourself makes me happy.☮❤

    It’s lost on most people just how good prince is as a guitarist. If he had been just a guitar player he would have been seen as one of the best ever. But Prince is Prince and it’s a real shame he’s no longer with us.

    • @donalddade5643
      @donalddade5643 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prince was an overall unbelievable musician. But calling him one of the best guitar players ever is a gross exaggeration. He was a good guitarist. Even a great guitarist. But there's no way he is on the short list. If Prince had never existed, the progression of instrument would have been the same. One cannot say the same thing about, say, Hendrix, EVH, Steve Vai, or Yngwie Malmsteen.

    I discovered this video clip just last year. Play That Funky Music is one of my all time favorite songs. I thought the very short original lead guitar was a classic riff...until I heard this by Prince. I thought you couldn't make the original any better. I was wrong. Prince took it to another level that I never thought was conceivable. He is not only playing a guitar lead. He is playing it with feeling. His soul is actually singing.

    FYI: Look for his Aftershows... plays 2 hour structured concert, then goes to jam/freeform somewhere for another 2-4 hours. (Now that he doesn't have anyone copyright striking every single vid, more people can see, access, & hear and study his playing.)
    The innerwebs loves to tout the 2004 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" solo as his greatest solo... truthfully, any of us who have seen him live knows...we know. He has always produced great solos. While My Guitar was not a fluke or a one off..... it was Prince through and through. That guitar has also been tossed in the air more than a few times - and it always finds it's way home! 💜🎶🎸🎶💜
    I always figured his smug attitude at the Hall of Fame, was him knowing he just showed an entire genre of music followers that he could not only hold his own with players other's thought were far superior to Prince....but he could blow them out the water.
