This is so far beyond what is offered for free on TH-cam that you are in the pantheon of ultimate benefactors. A lot of dudes put this knowledge behind a paywall. Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to wrangle a group to play funk for the last two months and your video shows it’s not just playing min7 chords on the one. Thank you.
I appreciate that! Although, I'm probably further devaluing art by doing this. :(
in his later years Prince started saying "funk is space" a lot, and how the space between notes dictates how funky you are. and all your renditions have backed this up PERFECTLY
Yes! It's like he inherently knew that for his whole life, but then at some point he became cognizant of the fact. Thanks for your visit and support!
The key to sick funk. Not the notes you play, the notes you leave out.
MK
He definitely mastered funk. I can't really think of any musician that so completely surprises me every time I hear him. Maybe Gary Moore would be the exception. I know they are good but every time I hear them I'm surprised of how they are always better than I remembered them.
i love gary too but prince can do all that, among a million other things, nothing compares to prince, even though i would call still got the blues a life changing album..@@JonasRosenven
@@JonasRosenven i play but i think they inspire me equally?.. i discovered prince later though..
Prince is my idol and the main reason I’ve become a musician. His music is moving and inspiring to be yourself and tells you to not let anyone control you.
Thanks for visiting and sharing, Ethan.
Prince was a rhythm genius, a master of funk guitar. My all time favorite musician. I was blessed to see him at an after show in Boston in a tiny club standing a few feet in front of me playing James Brown and other funk covers. Mind blowing experience 🤯🙏🏼. And Yes, Please! More Prince! You teach his stuff well, great job man, and I appreciate the time you put into this upload!
Thanks Brian. I love these comments and stories! Music, bringing us all together.
You're a lucky guy to have seen him in a setting like that.
What was the year of the gig, or era, in terms of album or single.
@@patcom1013 yes it was an amazing night! It was the Emancipation tour in spring 1997. He played Boston Garden and I had heard he was heading to the Roxy for an after hours show. It was an older theater type club with a balcony. I got there early and walked right up to the tiny stage that was barely big enough to fit the drums and I staked out my spot with my girlfriend inches from the stage. I looked up and saw Prince and Mayte sitting up in the balcony in the dark just watching people as they came in. Dominique Wilkins of the Hawks was there who i got to meet outside after the show. I suddenly yelled “Prince” and he gave me that sly smile and giggled and he and Mayte got up now that I had blown his cover lol. A few minutes later he walked onto this tiny stage and was right in front of my face and i was just flabbergasted that he was RIGHT THERE. He just started singing “Baby, Baby, Baby” and they went right into “I Got the Feelin’” by James Brown. They did another James Brown tune and I believe they did Thank You Fa Lettin Me Be Myself Again” by Sly and the Family Stone and an extended jam of “I’ll Take You There” by The Staples Singers. He had bodyguards standing on both sides of this tiny stage and they were just grabbing people’s cameras and pushing anyone’s hands away if they tried to reach out and touch Prince. And I could have for sure several times I was looking him right in the eye because the stage was so short and I’m 6’5”. All before cell phones and when they didn’t let you record anything at a concert. I always say I wish it was like it was now back then because I’d have photos of the experience. But it is a memory that is forever burned in my brain and I’ll always have it to think about. What a once in a lifetime talent he was.
Oh. Wow. This may be the best break down ever done on Prince’s funk guitar.
Great!
Well, thank you for the huge praise! Really appreciate your support Miles.
Very nice guy. He just says the right words about Prince. I share the same love for Prince. I loved this video. Prince best guitar player ever.
Thanks Frederico. Yes, Prince was an incredible guitar player! And there is so much more to learn from his catalogue!
one of the best Prince guitar lessons on youtube! thanks !
Wow! That's some serious praise. Thanks heaps!
I haven't come across a better one yet!
One of the best guitar lessons on TH-cam
What I love most about this video, more than the fact you’re studying Prince 💜 is that you’re having so much fun with it. Thank you man. Prince was the master of “Less is more”. 💜
Thanks for watching and commenting, so glad you enjoyed it!
As a lifelong Prince fan and guitarist I have to say that this video is amazing. Seeing you break the song down and give such clear explanations is fantastic. You're obviously a huge fan as well and your enthusiasm shows. Thank you for this!
Wow, thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
can't believe only 8k viewers caught this great analysis and demo.
Well, thanks for being one of them, Andrea. I appreciate your support!
Gosh, in LOVE this guy. Seriously.
His excitement Just makes me want to kiss him.
I’m a life long Prince fan.
I need to hug this guy.
Awwww thanks Romantis! Virtual hugs n kisses coming your way. Thank you so, so much for your comments. X
10 seconds in: I hit "LIKE"! I'm sure by the end I will wish there was a "LOVE".
Django Thunders is most assuredly the coolest handle I've seen on TH-cam thus far.
Your passion for Prince oozes my word! He is my hero! Great tribute thoroughly enjoyed!
Wow, thank you!
This was pure gold! Thank you! I was lucky enough to see him live twice, and there will just never be anything like him again. Absolute master!
Thanks Dan. Yes, I saw him live back in the 90s and it was just the greatest thing ever! Welcome to my channel!
When you did the slide on "wanna be your lover" to copy the keyboard. That was it man. Those notes bring by so many emotions from my childhood. I remember being a paperboy delivering newspapers on my bike listening to that masterpiece on my Walkman. Gotta learn that tune. Consider putting together guitar lessons that lead to being able to play Prince.Thanks.
What a great comment! Thanks, Gregory. Isn't it amazing that music can stir those wonderful memories. I know that feeling!
Love this video, you didn't just talk about the notes and chords prince played seems you went through more of an examination which give a better explanation of his music thanks. Great teacher.
Cheers Wade. Glad you enjoyed it mate!
"Way too much fun!"
YES! Brilliant lesson!
Thanks so much Vinnie. Glad you enjoyed!
@@dannyeddyguitar Cheers. Do you have a video on how to get Prince's or just a regular Funk sound on a Telecaster?
Not yet...
Superb thank you. I saw Prince live 8 times in the UK during the 90s and early 2000s.
He is, without doubt the singlemost musically talented person ever.
One live concert he had 30 women with hand and knee dusters crawl the stage for 30 minutes before he started. That was at Sheffield Arena. Just... Awesome
Amazing! I only saw him here in Australia once. My mind is STILL blown!
Hi mate. I was wondering how I came across this video. I then realised the TH-cam algorithm knows me better than my own parents. Love your enthusiasm. It’s very infectious. And how smiley you are. But that’s rare to see to a miserable Brit such as myself. I guess the sunshine down under puts you in a good mood.
Talking about music puts me in a good mood. ;) Thanks so much for your kind words and support!
It‘s simply a pleasure to see you enjoying what you do and giving credit to a musical genius like Prince. Thank you for that.
Thanks heaps for checking it out and commenting
Danny I got to say you certainly put a smile on my face!
Your enthusiasm is really infectious.
Great playing and a lot if really interesting information.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much, Indie. It's hard NOT to get excited when talking about this bloke!
Man, I'm so impressed!! Almost tearing listening to that Controversy riff!! You nailed it!!
Incredibly fun riff! Thanks so much, Ricard.
ok ....now I'm a fan. you are constantly and consistently nailing his hits. you should do a dedication medly to his music. it's almost like listening to his actual music. this is a true master class! I commend you for this, keep up the good work please. can't wait to hear more!!!
Thanks again, Black Mike! I appreciate you digging into my channel!
I saw Prince perform only twice in 1991.Just out of this world. You do him justice.Great video and guidance. The 1999 sounded bang on, as well as your playing and communication. And your love and joy for music.Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks heaps for the support and feedback.
Only twice?! You're a lucky dude
I have to say, I am always watching online tutorials to add tips and tools into my trade. This lesson breakdown was amazing. I have always been a minimalist advocate allowing a song to breathe and catch its groove. This was hands down the best break down of how a groove is born. Thank you, and subscribed. If you enjoy fusion of blues and hip hop check me out! Much love from Canada!
I'm enjoying your break down of Prince's work. To my mind you are bringing something new.. and I like it, thank you so much because I'm finding it really inspiring.
As a 40 + year veteran of Prince appreciation, eight years after his passing, it is good to know that he is getting the love he deserved when he was alive.
Wonderful comment - thanks! I really love knowing that there remains so much joy to be found in Prince's legacy.
Danny, we all wish we could deconstruct, analyze, play and thorouly enjoy playing the way Prince used to. Much respect, and thanks for sharing! Subscribed & Liked!
Thanks! Welcome aboard!
top level stuff, fantastic job.
Much appreciated!
Your enthusiasm is infectious man. Loved watching how much enjoyment you were getting playing and listening back to the loops. 👌🏼
I was lucky enough to see Prince live four times. Hands down the greatest performer I’ve ever witnessed. 💜
Four times! Lucky man. I only saw him once, and I'm still reeling...
I have a small collection of Prince playing in different TV shows as a musical guest. He is an absolutely great guitar player and he loves those Tele's. Yes, a lot of times his playing is kept to a minimum but still very effective in what he is doing. Fabulous musician. Thanks for breaking down Prince's guitar playing technique. I will watch this video many more times.
Thanks so much! Yes, his ability to recognise the beauty and effectiveness of keeping parts/playing limited to JUST what is required is what amazes me.
OMG thank you so much for putting this together!! I am a life-long Prince fan, but not a musician at all. This has truly helped me appreciate Prince at a far deeper level than I ever thought I could. I feel like you are the holy grail to Prince. The only downside for me was that you stopped too soon. 😭 I just wanted you to go on and on... So many great Prince tracks were springing to mine that I would love to get your take on, such as The Cross, When U Were Mine, Sign O' The Times, Dirty Mind, Glam Slam, A Question of U... Aah, I could listen to you all day. Liked and Subscribed!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
This is beautiful feedback, can't thank you enough, Sarah! I'm so stoked to be entertaining non-guitarists as well! Also thanks for those suggestions. There is most assuredly some more Prince clips in development.
@@dannyeddyguitar it’s a pleasure! You have an amazing skill/talent 😊
Thanks Danny. Love how you deconstruct and you can never get enough Prince IMHO. Look forward to your next Prince song deconstructions.
Thanks heaps! I agree - can never get enough Prince!
Mark Lettieri approves this video 😉. Seriously, the fun you're having is contagious. Great video !
Oh man, Mark is sensational! Thanks so much for the visit Sam.
Good ears! Great playing! Prince was genius!
Thanks a lot, Roger!

Great analysis and tips, you certainly know how to get to the core of the riffs! Your enthusiasm is contagious and indeed what a talent Prince was as a guitar player, let's also not forget his solos that next to these riffs are top notch as well
Thank you very much! Yes, his solos are insane!!! Check out my clips on his lead playing:

Thanks so much Dr. C. I appreciate the support.
You have a very unique talent. You can educate and entertain seamlessly. I can't wait to see what you put up next.
Thanks Arthur. The pressure is on!
Excellent Danny, thanks! you really gave a clear definition of "less is more" and how Prince "aka The Master" made it work like the parts of the body = a beautiful synchronicity!
Thanks so much Terry! Really appreciate your feedback mate!
You got me !
Glad you liked it!
Facial expression at 14:03 is priceless!! Lovely video mann thanks a lot
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Educational and entertaining. I live in Minneapolis so Prince is special to us outside of his musical genius. I learned a few things from you about some of his chords so thanks for sharing!
It seems amazing to me that I'm now sharing my appreciation of Prince with a local Minneapolite! Thanks heaps, John.
Victoria Australia wow, I lived there in the day, great lesson and enthusiasm
. What I dig is your lady Madonna Tommy sat down and showed me how the two play it, Cort bass is fine
Small word eh, Tasos! Wow, you sat down with Tommy!!Thanks for your support
Very very helpful tutorial. You've given a beginner something extremely useful. Thank you.
So glad it was helpful! I'm stoked if I can inspire!
All smiles and happy, they truly are fun grooves
Thanks man. SO much fun!
Thanks for great video. This is from the 1999 interview that Prince gave with Larry King: ” On his musical inspirations, he says, “I learned a lot about space from Miles [Davis]. Space is a sound, too.”
I love that quote! Thanks for visiting Debbie.
A+ for that video. I'm a lifelong Prince fan since 1979. Your Musicology breakdown shows how funky Prince was...2 notes! Keep the Prince videos coming!
Thank you! I've done a couple more on Prince, and have another in development.
The very stuff I want to learn!
Happy to help!
Actually, I think there's kind of a lack of in-depth Prince TH-cam videos. This is one of the best I've ever seen. Appreciate it!
Thanks heaps. More Prince on the way...
thank you Danny, great to see someone moved by music, really enjoyed it.
My absolute pleasure, Peter! Thanks for stopping by.
Brilliant stuff, a Revelation from the Revolution wizard, beautifully done!!
Thanks so much for the visit and the comment, Marios.
Hi Prince Lovers! Check out my latest Prince vid where I delve into his original 24 track desk tape of Let's Go Crazy - pure GENIUS!! th-cam.com/video/Tkw4jwqrR_w/w-d-xo.html
I was waiting the deconstruction of Musicology's Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance. That funk guitar is heaven!!! Great video, mate !!!
Thanks Victor. That one is DEFINITELY on my To-Do List.
My God! You’ve made my Saturday afternoon!
So glad you enjoyed it VV!
Prince was such a musical genius. I only really listened hard until alphabet st., I loved the song, but bought the cd (should have bought the record, had the others on vinyl) the cd had no tracks, if you wanted to hear a particular song you had to ffwd/rewind (kinda an extreme cousin of 8track tapes) anyway i fell out after that album.
I loved this video. I just found you, and really love what you’re doing. The little extras you put in are not missed. I like how when you say “enriching the sound” you “enrich” the picture… just subtle ways in helping your explanation. Anyway, great stuff Danny. You’re joy is infectious. Cheers
Thanks again, Tommy. So glad you are enjoying the channel. Feel free to let me know if there's something else you think I should have a dig into.
Great Video, thank You very much for posting. Prince just had his own definition of everything, minimalism included
Thank you Christian, he sure did! Welcome to my channel.
I really appreciate, anybody who breaks down Prince on guitar 🎸 excellent job.
Thanks so much for checking it out, and for the feedback.
This is the first YT video I have sat and watched and thoroughly enjoyed in a long long time. Thank you. You are a consummate professional sir and what an ear you have. Why have I only stumbled across your channel now. Subscribed!!
You are so welcome! Thanks for the sub!
Hats off to you. I just found this, and I was highly-impressed by the way you structured and presented this, on Prince's guitar parts. Well-Done! Really.
Thanks so very much for your feedback!
Thanks again ! You have chosen some tough and difficult songs to play correctly and with that same vibe. You seem to have grasped the essence of these songs. Respect ! Would love to hear you play a complete song, fully orchestrated and with vocals !
I really appreciate you checking these out and commenting! Thanks again!!
This was fun! I bet if Prince were alive and saw this....he would've either invited you to join his band or at the very least...invited you to jam with him!
Not sure if that would've happened... But thanks so much!
you nailed them all, good job
Thanks so much!

Great feedback Jayl! That made my day. I'm just sitting here pondering what to do for this week's clip. Perhaps some more Prince loops...
Mega Prince fan from NZ. Cheers Danny love your work. Enjoyable, educational and funky as f! Ngā mihi!
Kia ora, Scott! Thanks so much man!
Prince was... creative, I guess is the best word. He would not just do a single trick and repeat it over and over again cranking out the same sort of hit sings, like all other artists. He would sit for hours and hours, the (female) engineers suffering through fatigue and hunger has he fiddled around getting something unique. And then lay it down and it would repeat all over again.
But you can hear it in his albums, each and everyone is so different from the other. And such complex arrangements, that he all produced himself. And a lot of simple parts with a great chord progression makes, something incredibly complex and an intense journey of discovery for the listener. RESPECT!
And I am not a die hard, hard core Prince fan perse and so I have seen and played 100s of festivals and bands, But the best show I ever heard (acoustically as well as tidiness and closes to a recording) was Prince in the O2 in 2007. Man! My friend/former manager and I went there and we both, literally grown adult men, had tears in our eyes when he played purple rain and little red corvette. His supporting band was... woah!!! I am still getting goosebumps thinking back. That's how great that show was.
This is a wonderful comment. Loved reading it! Similarly, I have seen a tremendous array of amazing acts over the years - from James Brown to Jacob Collier - but my sole Prince gig was definitely a massive highlight!
just one minute in and this is already awesome! thank you! The guitar is a beaut!
Thanks heaps Mark. Glad you like it! Yeah, that guitar is a beast. I still haven't returned it, getting towards a year later! :o
Time stamp 17 minutes - Kiss and "that riff". - YES! Was waiting for that. You are right about those chords and the best part is the extended version of this where you can overdose on it.
So true! That's the amazing thing about playing a great 'feel' - it can go on forever and never get old.
Leaving “unexpected” staccato spaces is essential to funk (not saying I manage doing it). Great stuff, love that video, Prince is King, really mis him.
Thanks for checking it out and commenting.
"that's genius" sums prince up perfectly !! great work danny :)
Thanks so much.
Great video! Prince was a definitely a master! 👍
Oh no doubt at all! Just SO much crazy, monstrous talent!
@@dannyeddyguitar Absolutely!
Excellent. Some great, useful learning in here. Really enjoyed the analysis and deconstruction, which went beyond the usual 'how to'. Nice work!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
Prince 🤴🏻was genius😇👌. Actually Roger Nelson began his career as backing guitarist in Soul bands kind of same story as Jimmy Hendrix. Staying minimalistic with arrangements and leaving space for different layers of instruments are very important in arrangements . Prince takes this even further and makes Space for harmony in chords and Rhythms all to melt together perfectly. It’s all planned out from the first Bass notes and drum beats to the funky chords lines to make the guitar Solo and Vocals sound Perfect and bigger then Life 😎👍. What’s the difference ? A great minimalistic playing style makes every other part of the band sound better . Prince know this and implemented this from his former school of music. Prince also worked super fast in the studio so a mix of totality planed out arrangements with elements of improvisation was probably the recording style when recording Prince song’s in Sunset studios whit recording engineer Sylvia Massy. Thanks for Perfect breakdown and analysis 🧐 of Prince guitar chords Bass /Drum beats makes this a fun video to watch. By the way you can clearly hear how inspired Daft punk is by Prince sound listening to I Wannabe a Lover.
Thanks heaps for your great response! I hadn't thought about Daft Punk in that way. But, now that you say it... YES!
I think the Daft punk song that’s is inspired by some chords and riffs from I wannabe a lover is on the Discovery album (Digital love ) (Voyager).
Love this! I've always been intrigued by Prince's composition and you've nailed it here! More from SOTTs would be fantastic! Subed!
Thanks Jamie! I'll definitely dig into Sign and plan some more Prince.

Class video, for a massive Prince fan seeing you adore playing and dismantling the epic tunes is class.......I now need to work really hard to learn more guitar so I can do this! - Id love to see you do a cover of The Ride, Prince improvised it different in almost every performance but for a simple blues its so damn funky!

Thanks Austin, indeed he was!
Thank you for keeping the legend alive mate 💜
Thanks so much for the visit! Yeah. Prince. So damn good!
Prince was not like most people, thats what made him the best, thanks man great stuff
Absolutely! He was his own man with a singular vision. I love that about him.
@@dannyeddyguitar I cried my eye's out when he died, prince and Bowie in the same year was too much, thanks Danny
Thanks for this video, the voicings sound definitely close enough if they are not right on, pretty sure he'd have said so himself. Prince heard his way through it and knew it's also what you don't play and when guitar had to sound dry. He was bizarrely narcissistic and mystical but had it all musically: compositions, technique, originality, dance, a consummate musician. Every bit as interesting as Hendrix or Miles. He was still pumping out awesome albums and then was murdered by the makers and pushers of fentanyl, along with tens of thousands of other people, from rock stars to homeless heroin users none of whom deserved the fate and most of whom were black.
Yes, so sad! It's a terrible system that can on the one hand catalyse incredible life saving medicines, but on the other hand prioritise profit over the lives they were invested to save.
Thanks for your thoughts and for watching.🙏🏽
Fantastic video!! I need to practice ;) So fun to understand the chords better - more of this!
Inspiring people to practice - that's a win!
