Hi Matt, I have Inkscape 1.3 and gcode extension 1.7. I cannot get the area function to work, all I get is the perimeter of whatever I am trying to mill. Any suggestions? Nice video, BTW.
Great tutorial! Some tips for Inkscape: To make easier to edit the paths (especially after Area function) select the path and press F2 then node editing mode will be turned on for the selected paths. You do not have to ungroup each bunch of paths to edit them, just double click on the group to go inside it. Or you can use Ctrl+Click to select a path despite all groupings. And my favorite thing about Inkscape - Align and distribute (Ctrl+Shift+A). You can easily center paths with it.
I have a question about the red box cutout. For me I would go full depth on product wood in my application, so in my hand would be a rounded corner square product at the end. If my desire is a 4" x 4" square - I'm confused. Does the machine start on center of bit lets say on a 1/4 cutting bit or at the edge? Umm so to get my finished, do I need to add 1/8 inch to my CNC design?
I'm creating software that will import an svg file and let you simply click the shapes you want to cut/pocket etc. I'm working on tabs now (so your cut-out doesn't get thrown into the cnc bit!). I'll announce it on my channel.
thanks for the tutorial (I got a little lost in it), it would be enough to advise me how to convert the resulting image in Inkscape to an image with the .nc extension, thanks for the advice
Yeah. Double-clicking to go into the group makes sense. The reason I didn't is because, in the back of my head, I thought that you couldn't send multiple groups to the gcode tool to I just ungroup everything. I'll experiment with that some more to see what gcodetools is tolerant of.
Help!!!! I have downloaded the latest from Inkscape and have been able to follow along just fine. My problem is when I import the Gcode into UGS or Candle my project is over 20 times larger. I know that it's just numbers but it causes my machine to crash trying to get to those positions. Any Idea?
That's a tough one. The gcode can certainly be optimized quite a bit - you do get what you pay for. I live with the extra size since the file size isn't a problem for my CNC program apparently and because I'm not using the code for volume production.
this tutorial doesnt learn you how to use this program.. it learns you how to make a quick gcode in 5 minutes instead of learning every aspect of the program. tnx to you i can make pcb's in 10 minutes time tnx man !!!!
I have downloaded Inkscape .92 on both a laptop and pc. Both with windows 10. When I get to Path to Gcode in the Preference tab and complete the directory information, I get the pop up stating: "Directory does not exist! Please specify existing directory at Preferences tab!" I have tried everything. Is something obvious missing? Hope you can help since this happens in both laptop and pc and driving me nuts!
Don't recall having that problem. Can you put in something simple like c:\temp (make sure the temp folder exists). Also, I'm using .92 on windows 10 as well so that can't be the problem.
Dang it, I recently created this type of tool-path (in reverse) manually, 26 times, using the CNC-Toolkit script for 3DS Max. CNC-Toolkit generates a tool-path and G-code from a spline (which is great) but I have to draw the spline. I'll download Inkscape for future projects needing this type of material removal. Thanks a million! However, I found this video while looking for a free way to do V-carving. Is there a way to create V-Carve tool-paths with Inkscape and Gcodetools?
@@MatthewSmith-wh5dr Hi back again after 8 yrs. Video is Fine in Debian Buster. And the gcodetools is in the standard repo, no need to install. Thanks for the tutor!
This is the weirdest video I've ever seen. It doesn't work on my PC (Windows 8.1 w/IE 11 and Chrome), but it works fine on my Android Phone? Weird but, thanks for posting.
9 years wow, technical quality of your video is awesome. Thanks also for the content.
@0:33 . Man you the first one who accept inch don't have a relationship to all units. Respect dude and nice job . Thanks
cool tutorial!!!
Most features are still there
Will search for your next one about multiple depths :D
Cheers!!

Still no video. Very sad
This Gcode experience work in Z axis pen up&down only....??
This is such a nice video for being 11 years old!

Thanks for doing this! You saved me hours it would have taken just figuring out how to get started.
How can we generate a G-code for robotic tufting gun using Inkscape, please???
I get sound but no video!!! I don't think it's my computer

The problem I have in converting this to gcode, I dont have depth its only M5 (for z+) and M3 (for z-).
It wont print in this format
Gcodetools can work with groups since v1.5. So you do not have to care about grouping any more.

Too bad about this video but the others in the series were very helpful to me. Thanks for posting!
i had a problem while applying path to gcode. i thing the problem is at directory selection.how can i solve it

Not sure what part you're referencing. Can you tell me what time stamp in the video you are confused about?
Thanks Matt you help me alot
Nice, clear explanation... thanks.
Great video! Thanks so much for making an easy to understand tutorial. This is great for hobby cnc'ers like me.
Where is the vid?
All i see is gray screen, audio comes in but no video.

Fantastic video - thank you for your effort!!!
I had the gcode folder already open in a file explorer window. I clicked on the file explorer program down in the tray.
the video doesnt not display on Ubuntu 10.04 with ffox 20.0
BUT if you download the video, both Totem and mplayer have video AND sound. HTH tjtr33
It used to work but google did something on their end. Not sure what to do now.

Sadly this video is not visible !
Any ideas on a CNC Simulator that's cheap or free
CAMotics
Mach from artsoft is free and will simulate
Nice job, thanks.
Ever thought of removing, redoing, reposting?
I should. It's a pain in the ass that the original video got corrupted on their servers after awhile but I owe it to the authors to do it.
Realy Thank you))
@8:38 Click & Shift+Ctrl+k and you will be able to delete
No video, only a grey banner

I don't know what to say. It used to work but now it doesn't. Google messed it up and I don't have the source video to re-upload.
